Hey friends! Thought I’d chime in an give a little BTS on what the design team (visually lead by Steven Estudillo) put together!
ExoGenesis is the hypothesis that life originated elsewhere and brought to earth. The performers of this years show represent a foreign creature-like human with peculiar and unusual behaviors. They are the “bringers of life” who are ultimately looking for the appropriate conditions and location to transfer life to this earth.
The journey boiled down to a few simple words chronologically are :
    Mvt 1 Arrival
    Mvt 2 Exploration
    Mvt 3 Cultivate
    Mvt 4 Thrive.
Now if you are a real design nerd….I’ve included some more info that the design team used in our decision making process to help craft what you see from a set design stand point as well!
    • The performance space starts and is intended to be a desolate planet, void of life.
The props serve multiple purposes throughout the show!
    • Initially, The props are the “pods” or the dwelling of this species. Much like a chrysalis (cocoon), the props operate as the origin of where this species begins.
    • Over time, the props evolve from a dwelling, to a physical environment. A unique space for the performers to crawl into, climb up, and interact with.
    • The props ultimately become the life that we aim to transplant.
The tarp has two specific significances.
    • The first - an abstract vine/tree of life. Much like a fruit growing off a tree, the opening set has our “pods” growing off the end of each branch. Containing the life that has arrived from elsewhere in the universe.
    • Secondly - the shape of outer edge of the tarp represents the horizon of a planet. Spherical in nature, it represents a micro universe, in the greater context of the universe.
ExoGenesis takes place somewhere in the universe. As the theory suggest, life could be transferred from Planet X to Planet Y, or from Planet Y to Planet Z, and so on. This process could have happened multiple times. This process could have happened just once.
Thanks for a fun first read! Hope you guys get to catch it again when we add all the final touches! 👀

All of these observations are clear to first-time viewers. Audiences are able to see the clues in front of them, as they watch the show. (The only item that isn't obvious is "The props ultimately become the life that we aim to transplant.") Everything else is in-your-face transparent, starting with a definition of the title word "Exogenesis."
Here are the elements that need more explanation:
      Why the capes?
Why the design on the uniform?
Why doesn't the show include the departure after inhabiting? It looks like they're here to stay at the end, which makes no sense.
What is the significance of the drum major's salute?
Why does the ensemble surround the pit twice, once at the end of the opener and once at the finale?
What's the difference between the cultivate and thrive sections, visually?
If the props are what they cultivate and "leave behind", where are those items in our present day earth? Wouldn't we see them?
If the props are what they cultivate and "leave behind" what space ship do they use to travel to the next planet?

I'm honestly enjoying the fight for fifth, as well as the action going on beneath. Not knocking any of the top 4 corps (I love the Bluecoats show), but it feels like with the Mandarins, Phantom Regiment, Troopers, etc. that you can feel that they really are enjoying what their respective staff put together for them. The staff are giving them a challenge and generally fun music to play, and I think it shows with their executions. It's going to be exciting how everything wraps up though! Always love this time of year.

Yay! You guys absolutely deliver on these show analysis videos. I wouldn't say this is my favorite show this season, but I do love the direction the corps is going and I agree that the hats are missed at the moment.
Phantom last year was definitely a black sheep among the other corps productions, as they were more traditional than the rest. I think they're adding some modern drum corps production elements this year in conjunction with some of that classic phantom regiment writing.
Kudos to J.D. Shaw for writing and also directing this hornline in the direction that it's going!

Thanks again for another nice analysis. Phantom 2008 is what got me into DCI so I'll always have a soft spot for them. Even though they haven't been at the very top for a while I've always appreciated their musicality and bringing classical music to the field. Last year and this year have been somewhat of a shift for Phantom, they are attempting to reinvent themselves and I believe this is the next step in that process.

One thing that I always looked forward to was being able to identify a corps based on their signature sound. Here with PR, they always had a 'top heavy' brass line and specific signature drumline parts. Same with many other corps - I could always tell a Cadets drumline from everyone else. Star had a low/mid end brass line. The bass drum tuning was always a give-away and stayed consistent from year to year. Shows change but when each corps brings their signature sounds to it, something special happens every time.

Kinda wish they did 2nd Law:Isolation System (the battery and front ensemble opening) a little more melodic like the original song and I think it would’ve fit the show better if it was closer to the original song but that is really my biggest and least problematic problem I have with the show. The video is literally titled "First Look". They are reacting to what they see for the first time. They are also brass players, so of course that is where their focus is and where their most substantial critique lies. For me personally, being a drummer, I barely even notice the colorguard until I watch a show for like the third time. It's not unheard of for someone to just not comment on something, especially when they are reacting to something as densely packed as a drum corps show.

    • @arthurfultz8066

@@CaptainKylan I would bet they knew the stories behind CutOuts and Garden of Love before the season even started. Insulting they didn’t look up Exogenesis. “Running your mouths” buddy we’re just having fun watching some drum corps. If you’re looking for some sort of educational resource then go somewhere else. It’s called “A First Look” to literally be a first reaction, not an in depth video essay analysis. You need to chill out.

    • @CaptainKylan
      @CaptainKylan 11 місяців тому +1

@@arthurfultz8066 Maybe they knew the stories of those shows, maybe they didn't. We don't know so really that's just a guess. I knew what Exogenesis means just because I knew what the concept was, but I also don't look up anything about drum corps shows until I watch them for the first time. It's the job of a good show designer to express their concepts through the music, drill, choreography, and narration. I thought phantom did a good job of making their show feel very alien, but like I said before, I KNEW what Exogenesis was already, and I can't speak to the experience of someone who doesn't already know that concept.
These people are not professionals hired by DCI to react to shows. They do not have to uphold any standard of excellence to appease anyone besides themselves for the content they are making. Calling their work "insulting" and trying to place YOUR standards on their content before they "run their mouths" is not conducive to positive criticism of their work.

Hey! Question for you! Have you ever accepted Jesus as your personal savior from your sins? Please let me explain real quick... We have all sinned. Romans 3:23 says "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;"
Our sins have a penalty. That penalty is hell.
Romans 6:23 says "For the wages of sin is death..." Because of our sin, when we die, hell is our eternal destiny. But here is the good news, the verse does not stop there. It continues "...but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 5:8 says "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
We have all sinned and we deserve to go to hell, but God sent His son, Jesus, to die for our sins and pay the penalty we owe. Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ! God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, to earth to die for our sins and pay the penalty for our sins! Jesus died for our sins, but He rose again from the dead and beat death! By accepting Jesus as your savior in faith, you can inherit eternal life in heaven! Repent of your sins and place your faith in Jesus Christ today! Place your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior! Call out to Jesus today and ask Him to forgive your sins and save your soul!
Romans 10:13 - "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
