This is so true.
I don't even know how Joey can argue against that scene, I wasn't a big Rock Lee fan up to that point, and to be fair he's still not a favourite character of mine (though him having so little screen time is one of the reasons, and I'm biased for villain), but that scene is probably one if not the most iconic scene from Naruto. And I think Naruto has so many good scenes despite having so many ups and downs as a series.

Iconic doesn't mean what impacted you personally the most or what is selling the best. Id say that Sailor Moon's transformation sequence is iconic.
This is a really good point. Sailor Moon’s influence on pop culture is massive. There was a time when anime was infamous for recycled animation, and Sailor Moon’s transformation scene was the most well known example. It’s less common now that anime has become a lot more mainstream but a Sailor Moon-esque transformation scene used to be the goto shorthand for anime in all sorts of parodies.
actually whats selling the best does impact what is iconic as well. if something is not popular no matter how good the scene is it cant become iconic bc not enough ppl have seen it. so yes whats selling the best does impact what the most iconic scenes are. look at the shows they are saying are iconic and they are all extremely popular and sell well DB, Naruto, sailor moon was popular yes but its still a genre that a lot of anime fans dont even watch the genre itself isnt popular enough to be iconic imo, and dont bring up madoka magica or revolutionary girl utena those are deconstructions of the magical girl genre them being iconic or not does not prove me false here as they arent even really the same genre.
@@RageKage987 Sure its not a watched genre, but Sailor Moon as a whole is one of the most popular and impactful anime of all time, and it's effects on the medium can't be understated.
But can that be considered a scene? You could also say Naruto's hand-sign weaving sequences are iconic, but they're not limited to any particular scene, hence why I wouldn't include them in this context. Though I suppose you could say the same about the Super Sayan transformation.
@@VVayVVard The difference is that the Sailor Moon transformation is literally, cel by cel, frame by frame, the exact same scene every time. Naruto’s hand signs are probably recycled every now and then, but it’s far from always. And it’s over in a second, whereas Sailor Moon is like an entire minute every episode.
Iconic is Super Saiyan, Rock Lee taking weights off, Ashita no Joe’s ending referenced so many times in anime, Axis Shock in Gundam, and the Akira slide. Those are all that come to mind when I think of iconic. Neon Genesis has plenty of iconic moments too. I feel like the fact that a lot of anime reference those moments is a major reason why they are iconic. You would know the reference without even watching the original anime.
i'd probably add ace's death , the eclipse and ichigo going bankai for the first time into any most iconic moments in anime list . ace's death is the most iconic moment in one piece [best selling manga , 2nd/3rd most popular anime worldwide] , the eclipse is easily the most influential and iconic moment in seinen , ichigo going bankai is probably the most stylish transformation in shonen and bleach's popularity at it's peak was insane and it's influence on new gen shonen can't be understated

Rock Lee's is a nod to the weights in Dragonball but at least Rock Lee's dropping was done in a way that narratively makes it stand out to the point people associate weight dropping with that scene

I think Sailor Moon transformation is a great contender for top 5, given how much it is referenced. It may not be the first “magical girl transformation”, but surely it is what everyone remembers.

I feel like an moment in a show is truly Iconic when people out side of the fan/viewer base know about the scene through cultural osmosis.
They might not be the best, most emotional, or most exciting scenes in the show, but they are certainly iconic.
If that’s case JJK might be up there if not already in the top 10.

@@danielelder6361 I never heard of Berserk until 2016 which made me avoid it for obvious reasons. I recently watched the original and was not prepared for the eclipse at all. 😰 The show was too "mature" to air regularly and I'm sure most TV networks would avoid licensing something like that.
Gotta mention the luffy, hachi, and celestial dragon moment. I think Gon and Pitou is up there too. Mapo tofu is an honorable mention as well

That would be... weights, DBZ transformation, Yamcha death scene, Ashita no Joe death, ora-ora-ora from Jojo, You're Already Dead from Fist of the North Star. Possibly also Kaiji's "zawa-zawa". Some Rena's scenes from first arc of Higurashi as well, like "USO DA" or her staring through the ajar door. Oh, right, also, first time Dempsey Roll got used in Hajime no Ippo. I've seen so many series parody it, particularly Gintama.

DBZ has probably most of the top iconic scenes just because of how impactfull the anime is but I can't believe no one mentioned the Nina chimera scene, even people who never seen the 2003 version know how that scene.

From DBZ alone, we got It's Over 9000! We got Super Saiyan Transformation (including Krillin screaming GOKUUUUU!). We got Father and Son Kamehameha. Finally, we also have the Spirit Bomb. Even Kamehameha alone is iconic.

Mostly b/c it is regulated to only being relevant to/for fans of One Piece. Part of the reason I think these become "iconic" is there ability to be referenced and used by other media and shows.

like how the meme "ITS PIKACHU" is iconic, its not meant to be good, good and iconic are not the same thing, it just means in an instant you know where its from and why other people think its important
Also references in other media can make the original iconic even if people haven't seen it. Ashita no Joe is the clearest example of that, but if you don't know it, it might be a spoiler.

Kaneki one was pretty basic. Can find such in at least one seasonal anime every season.

just started video, already leaving. Rock lee taking the weights off? It was a great scene, but it wasn't even original. Taking the weights off is literally from the original Dragon Ball with Krillin and Goku doing it as kids, and later goku as a teen vs Tien. Rock Lee just copied it.

I feel like iconic basically translates to "well known" or "era defining", so the Akira-slide, Goku going Super Saiyan, Rock Lee taking of the weights and the Jojo walk are all extremely solid picks!
Don't get me wrong, so is Erwin's speech, it's just not nearly as iconic as the aforementioned. So yeah the fifth pick is at least more debatable.
Super Saiyan transformation First Time, Yugioh Exodia Obliterate, Rock Lee dropping the weights, Ash being electrocuted by pikachu the first time, Eren talking to his father through his memories must be the top 5
Marineford Tragedy is the most iconic other than Rock Lee vs Gaara and Goku being Super Saiyan.
“I want to live!!!!!!” is pretty iconic. Probably the most iconic in the series for me personally, since Enies Lobby is my favorite arc Pre-Timeskip.
My most iconic part of one piece is either the walk to Arlong park, or shanks stopping the war can’t see anything that tops them 🤷♂️
