That SUV was a Volkswagen Atlas, if I'm not mistaken, those come standard with 4motion AWD, with the AWD system being front wheel drive bias.

Yup, I believe it’s a fwd-biased haldex-based AWD system. Of course, tires > drivechain when driving in the snow, but AWD certainly helps…
