Random limited color palette is such a great challenge to do for artists to grow in terms of both color mixing and tonal value. I once chose random 4 colors that turned out to be two browns, a green and a grey. Had no idea what to paint but didn't want to give up...ended up with a nice autumn loose floral wreath :)
That's a very limiting palette as they are sort of like the result of other mixes. You can't use them to mix other colours. Not easy to use them on certain subject matter.
@@teohyc Exactly! It definitely was a challenge but I learned a lot about working with what I have. I may do that challenge again. Especially when I see other artists working with only one or two colors for their pieces, it's inspiring. I will always prefer vibrant botanical colors but now I realize the value of just a skin tone palette, earth palette, etc. in learning about composition.
Awesome I love these videos... I dont like the way these colors mix, everything but the orange is very muted, and the orange is almost to bright... I use phthalo blue (greenshade), Indian yellow, and quindacrylon magenta, it's funny a small touch of my yellow actually turns the magenta into pure tomato red
A favourite triad of mine (warm yellow, warm-to-mid blue and cool red) for painting sunsets over water - the muting you get gives you an almost ethereal, misty or ghostly quality.
Hi, thank you for your video, very instructive for me as I am self-taught ! And I love the way you let colors et the drawing more free : it's very inspiring and relaxing for me !
Hi Teoh, I love this. I was taught that you should be able to use only 4 to 6 colors at the most for all your color mixing and as you show here, with 3! I love the economy of it, it's a nice way to make a small palette for an on the go sketch kit that will all fit in my overcrowded pocketbook! Thank you for another great video.
A bit more subdued, but I really liked the granulation mixed with alizarin. I think mixing the colors on paper really gives it a nice effect. Love this series!
how did you let go of the need to have perfect lines in your sketches? im trying to focus more on colors and composition but i find myself getting lost in details
Draw from big to small. If you don't have space to draw details, leave them out. Another way is to hold your sketch far and look to see if it has enough or too much details.
Hey Teoh, I have always love your videos and your style, watching you paint is so relax, I love it! I was wondering where you find your reference pictures when you do sketch like this so I can sketch at home (I do not have a lot of time to go out this year with my studies), let me know
My limited is carmine, hansa med and cobalt blue, but I really wish the cobalt was deeper. Have you tried the cobalt blue deep from winsor newton? I'm thinking about ordering it and I would really like to know if its deeper than the daniel smith cobalt.
Nice!!! I REALLY think you'd be doing us all a huge insight to include footage of your color mixing. ( aw heck it IS all sped up, after all) Also, purist that I am, I wish you'd used white gouache instead of that white gel pen which looks crappy as often as it works,well...
@@teohyc Here are two ideas: 1) Winsor & Newton Quin Magenta (or any other brand with PR 122, even an Opera Pink) Hanza Yellow (or Lemon Yellow, any primary yellow really) Cobalt Teal (or Amazonite Genuine) 2) a 4 color pallet consisting of: Hanza Yellow (or any slightly warm yellow) Phthalo Green Blue Shade Ultramarine Violet (or Dioxazine Violet, Imperial Purple, Ultramarine Blue, Carbazole Violet) Pyrrol Scarlet (or Winsor & Newton Cadmium Red, or Pyrrol Red)
The look from this set of primary colours is going to look different from another set of primary colours. Eg if this set has all cool colours, you won't be able to create colours from a set with all warm colours. Technically speaking you can create any colour from primaries, but in reality sometimes it is difficult or too time consuming to do so.
Limited palette refers to the number of paints used, he used only 3 and not 12 like some of the small watercolor sets have, therefore it is a limited palette. There’s no correlation to the mixes you can make; it’s all about using less paints (no matter what type it is, tube, pans, liquid). That’s exactly what a limited palette is in watercolor as opposed to designing where limited palette only allows the use of the colors as they are without mixing.
SPRAY ON FIXATIVE? HOW CAN IT BE SO? IS IT SOMEHOW POUROUS ON THE PAPER AND NOT ON THE GRAPHITE? I WOULD THINK ITS LIKE PAINTING WATERCOLOR ON GLASS OR SOMETHING? AM I ASKING A STUPID QUESTION? I THOUGHT A MAIN FEATURE OF WATERCOLORS WAS THE PAPER AND THE VARIOUS WAYS IT ABSORBES THE PAINT ETC.!? PS. WOULD A PIN STRIPING BRUSH WORK WITH WATERCOLOR PAINT? THE TYPE OF BRUSHES USED IN A TYPICAL CAR BODYSHOP PAINT BOOTH?? I'VE SEEN SOME REALLY COOL CALLIGRAPHY/TYPOGRAPHY BRUSHES USED IN WATERCOLOR PAINTING! I SAW ANOTHER UA-camR, NITIN SINGH DO A VIDEO, "BEST WATERCOLOR BRUSH FOR BEGINNERS!" AND WONDERED IF YOU COULD DO A REVIEW OF THEM?? THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR OUTSTANDING VIDEOS, VERY MUCH APPRECIATED, THANKYOU!!! IS WATERCOLORING EVEN CALLED "PAINTING"??
Main tip is when the wash is still wet, that’s when you add the other colour ink to let it spread. Other way is after one stroke, load your brush with another colour and continue. Vary with the amount of paint you load to see the difference. Try on scrap paper first. Watch this video ua-cam.com/video/T92mcAmPdvQ/v-deo.html
these are honestly my favorite videos

Your paintings bring me joy! I love that you can paint outside the lines.❤
I looooove your painting videos thank you very much 👌👽👌
And I love using gel pen too btw

Wildboy789789 Do you get a good dark when you mix all 3? I’m thinking of creating a really small color box with 3 colors + water soluble graphite.
You got some pretty nice colors from this limited palette. Like it. 👍 😄 Thanks Teoh.

Loved changing the direction of the chap walking. It made it look different and you explained the effect/why.👏
Having a limited palette is the most fun

Your sketch is an improvement of the photo, more interesting. Your composition and color are better. 😊
I thought the same :-)

Can we give you limited palette ideas to try out? I have a few that I would be really cool to see you use.
Yes, but not sure I have those colours
@@teohyc Here are two ideas:
1) Winsor & Newton Quin Magenta (or any other brand with PR 122, even an Opera Pink)
Hanza Yellow (or Lemon Yellow, any primary yellow really)
Cobalt Teal (or Amazonite Genuine)
2) a 4 color pallet consisting of:
Hanza Yellow (or any slightly warm yellow)
Phthalo Green Blue Shade
Ultramarine Violet (or Dioxazine Violet, Imperial Purple, Ultramarine Blue, Carbazole Violet)
Pyrrol Scarlet (or Winsor & Newton Cadmium Red, or Pyrrol Red)
I love your videos but, with respect, how is that a limited colour palette since you can create just about any colour from the primaries?

It's very difficult to read all uppercase letters.
Any tips on mixing colors on paper as you do? I'm just too timid!

Practice more and these washes with blending colours will make your colours more interesting (compared to flat pre-mixed washes).
@@teohyc Thank you!
hey how´s your daughter doing? :D
She's 10 months only. Learning to climb on the sofa😂
