  • Exploring the limited palette again this time with Perylene Red, French Ultramarine and Quinacridone Deep Gold.
    The cafe is Groundstory located at 756 North Bridge Rd, Singapore 198724.
    The brush I used are the Nevskaya Palitra kolinsky sable brush and ColorPro series 2803 squirrel brush. The pen is the Pelikan M200 with Noodlers Bulletproof Black Ink.

    I like particularly the association of these 3 colors, compare to the others. Your sketch is very nice too and the fact that you don’t paint very « carefully » give life to your sketch. We have the impression to be there, in this cafe. Bravo Teoh !

    I really enjoy your limited palette explorations! I was intrigued by the use of one of the new formula Quin Golds here. PY150 (Nickel Azo Yellow) and PO48 (Quinacridone Burnt Orange). both repeatedly show up in convenience colors that I'm drawn to, so I'm taking (new) Quin Gold off my palette for awhile and am starting to play more with the two single pigment colors.

      +Tracy Knits I think the original Quin Gold formula has changed from single to two pigments. I've not tried the original Quin Gold though

      @InLiquidColor 6 років тому +3

      Teoh! You haven't used PO49? 😭💔 I didn't realize! Miquel, QGD is very orange compared to the original Quin Gold. Their new formula of the Quin Gold is made from the same two pigments as QGD, but it has more of the yellow and less of the orange so it's more on the golden side.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 років тому +5

      +felipe bello You can just dilute your paints with water for lighter values, or add more primary colours into your mix to neutralise the colours to make them more pastel looking.

    Yassss, another interesting primary set. I feel like perylene red has been making it into my paintings more and more often, lately-especially after I did a piece based off of Studio Ghibli’s Ponyo....since it was basically the dominant color.
    The neutrals and black on this are really neat, and I actually love the purples you got, Which I’m kind of surprised about!
    I’m really enjoying this series-thanks for them!
    By the way, there’s a typo in the UA-cam title-it says “good” instead of “gold.” Easy fix-just wanted to mention it in case you didn’t notice!

    Interesting how you painted the shadows first. The colors work well together. Definitely warm yellow and blue, but is that red warm or cool?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 років тому

      +Sharon Nolfi Actually I've no idea if that's a warm or cool red. But looking at the muted orange and the purple is quite decent with a warm Ultramarine, it should be considered cool.

    Hi Teoh, would you mind making a video on shading? I really struggle with it. The size and intensity of the shadows, but most of all I struggle to choose the shadow colours. Does a shadow colour have to consist of the colours of the surrounding objects or does it not matter? Thanks! :p

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 років тому +1

      The trick is to get the contrast right. E.g. how dark is the shadow going to be relative to the lighted part. If you have problems, you can use a grayscale value chart (Google it) to help you gauge the values of the shadows. You can usually mix shadows from the existing colours you used to might the lighted part of the subject. E.g. if the subject is yellow and lighted, the shadow will consider of that yellow paint, mixed with the other two primary colours (red and blue). It's demonstrated in this video ua-cam.com/video/O5F5syvHfm4/v-deo.html
      There might be other videos talking about shadows on UA-cam.
      Practice with grayscale first. It's easier. Learn to get the contrast right, then move on to using colours.

    I really like that Quinacridone Deep Gold. All three of these were interesting choices for a primary palette. Do you think Cobalt Blue would behave similarly to the French Ultramarine when mixed with the other two primary colors?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 років тому

      +Donna G The blue of Cobalt is not as deep as Ultramarine. Cobalt Blue is a nice shade though.

    • @Donna_G
      @Donna_G 6 років тому

      Thanks for the reply, Teoh. I had wondered because when I combine Phthalo Blue and French Ultramarine, I can get a color nearly the same as Cobalt Blue. I think my Phthalo Blue is the same as DS Phthalo Blue (Green Shade). These are my three favorite Blues on my palette, even though I have several more in tubes.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 років тому

      +Donna G Cobalt Blue is closer to French Ultramarine than Phthalo Blue. So if I have Ultramarine, I would not add Cobalt Blue to my palette. Try Cerulean Blue Chromium. I've made a few videos about them.

    • @Donna_G
      @Donna_G 6 років тому

      Teoh, that was a quick reply. I have Cerulean Blue Chromium on my palette. I tend to forget that it's there since it's not one of my favorite blues. But, it does make a decent sky color when I want a very pale sky like we have around here sometimes.

    How do you get such saturated colors? From the tube? Or can you do it with a pan color or dried tube paint?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 років тому

      It's easy to get saturated colours when you use artist grade paints, either from tube or pan. Tubes are easier to dissolve since they are soft already.

    • @gecko2255
      @gecko2255 6 років тому

      Teoh Yi Chie thank you! I must use too much water. I’m using Daniel Smith watercolors and can’t get such vibrant colors. Thank you for your reply. Your very generous.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 років тому +1

      Don't be afraid to use more paint. One common mistake beginners make is they don't use enough paint and that's why the colours don't look as strong. Practice with different strength of mixtures. E.g. Use more water, less water, little water. With that, you can get three shades/values. If you just start with little water, then you only have one shade/value.

      that's actually a viable way to say it though
      the "like" suggests that the appearance is similar rather than exactly the same, and the "how" is used more for general descriptions when talking about the appearance of something. if you want something a little more correct in word usage, i guess "this is how it might look like" is more proper. otherwise it's functionally the same as the examples you gave.
      there's really no such thing as good/proper english anyways. i think his english is fine

    • @MaryPrasadArt
