    Why oh why do reviewers assume that everybody is interested in fuzz tones. Why can't we hear how the guitar sounds playing straight Blues, Jazz and Dance Music?

    I fucking love the matte finish. For me, it looks.. Raw. Like, it's not trying to impress you with flashy things but rather the fundamental design. Really refreshing to see. I own guitars with that gloss finish and an SC-custom FR VB with a matte finish. It's nice to have both. But I might prefer the matte finish. Just looks more mature to me.

  • @HighSpeedirt1

    Couple of things that impressed me was the thickness of body, a bridge without the retainer wire, and a sculpted heel joint. Really like the gold top on black satin finish too. I would be tempted if I didn't already have a bunch of sub $300 LP style guitars. Not worth buying unless you can do your own setups and repair the flaws. Would be great to see a complete setup and some upgrades done on this.

    I recently bought a Harley Benton gold top with p90s.
    I received the first one and it had some issues. The fret board was seperating from the neck. I emailed Thomann and they said to send it back. They shipped me another one and it is excellent. No issues.
    It sounds really good, and plays nearly perfectly.
    It was set up when I got it. It wasn't in tune, I didn't expect it to be coming from Germany. Lol.
    I'm really happy with the 125 bucks I spent.

  • @bakters
    @bakters 4 роки тому +4

    The setup, as long as it's not too far off, is largely irrelevant. Almost all guitars require some setup, until your really luck out and what you bought suits your personal preferences perfectly. Sure, going to a luthier could be expensive, but asking a friend should not cost you more than a couple of beers.
    Getting a functional LP for that kind of money is a steal. The details can be worked out over time if someone likes it. If not, selling it without much of a loss should not be particularly difficult.
    Kids nowadays have it so easy... ;-)

    A couple of guys asked how my purchase went. Well, I bought the exact same guitar for around £100, so bear that in mind with what I'm about to say. On the whole, I am impressed with the instrument. The biggest problem with mine is that the frets aren't level. Now, I like my action real low and it tests the best of set ups, but I can't set up my HB to my preferred specification. If I'm to keep this guitar, it's going to need the frets levelled, and that's going to cost me another £100. The question is, therefore, is the guitar worth the outlay? Especially as I don't like the Roswell pickups and will probably drop another £75 on some Irongear p/ups. So, with the guitar set properly, will it be worth £275? I'd say "yes" given that I'd still be paying more for a Vintage or an Epiphone, and I do like the feel of the guitar.

    I bought a Harley Benton SC-550 and I couldn't be happier. Yes, I can set up guitars, myself, so I have that advantage. It had one high fret, which I leveled out. I lowered the action, set the intonation, set the pickup heights, set the neck relief, and that turned it into a fantastic guitar. Switched to locking tuners because I hate winding new strings. Right now I'm doing a lot of unnecessary but fun stuff. I'm adding one push-pull pot to switch both pickups to single coil, and another push-pull to make the pickups work in series, out of phase. I wouldn't call this a project guitar. Project guitars are pretty much junk guitars I want to improve. This is an excellent affordable guitar that can use some easy improvement for those who make fiddling with guitars a hobby.

    I have two HB single cuts, both goldtops, and two HB strat style, all 4 have been fantastic (with a few minor adjustments) right out of the box. Only issue I've had was a broken selector switch on my single cut P90, and that wasn't thomanns fault. I will continue to by Harley bentons because the 4 I have are great players, and combined, were less expensive than a lower level Fender. Next up for me is a couple of the Tele style guitars.

    The concave bow is intentionally to prevent buzz and can be adjusted with the truss rod. If the neck is straight there will be buzz when the action is (overall seen) low.

  • @johnpike5836
    @johnpike5836 4 роки тому +2

    every healthy guitar has a slight bow in the neck in tune and at pitch.
    Give the truss a 1/4 turn tighten before lowering the action at the bridge.
    Its Bass Wood bro, a lot lighter not so great for "tone" but the HB Les Paul's have a pretty thick Maple Cap which Other experts say makes a lot of difference.
    The HB has Medium Fat Frets excellent quality and the do come polished.
    Not Like Epi's with skinny little alloy junk. That's where the big money is.
    The Neck Heel is fantastic and better all around for reach!
    Swap out the machine heads, Nut, Bridge, Tail Piece, and gut the electronics (go the Seymores or)
    and you got a gigging machine.
    I have the strat too. for under $1000.00 can bucks BY a Tech.
    I got mine and I'm in Canada!
    HB IS the goose that laid the golden egg

    There's a few major critical people commenting on here. Go and sit down with a beer or something and chill out. If you're wanting to watch someone widdly diddling to your perfection, go and UA-cam your favourite guitarists. As a reviews channel, this is darn fine. You don't have to be one of the greatest guitarists in the world to qualify to own decent gear either. Or maybe that's just jealousy. You don't have to watch this channel and of course you could always do your own and amaze us. Just to put it into context, Leo Fender couldn't play guitar - how dare he invent some of the best guitars in the world ever!! (LOL). Keep up the good work Harley Benton and Basement GAS .

So listen and grow and know you are doing something right if your audience are asking for more on your next video

    I'm an experienced guitarist, and I have just ordered one of these from Thomann (I'm from the UK). I gig with high-end super Strats and a modified USA Standard Strat, and a USA PRS Custom 22. I've gone for one of these purely out of curiosity, to find out what all the hype is about.
    As regards setting up the guitar, there isn't a guitar I have ever bought (and I have sold more guitars that I now own - and that's a lot!) and there isn't one that hasn't had to be adjusted to some degree or other. It isn't the fact that the guitar has to be adjusted, it's how easy the guitar is to adjust. Accordingly, I would like to have seen you make the adjustments to the neck (truss rod), and the intonation (saddles). However, overall, I found your video to be very useful and honest.
    Incidentally, when I get mine, I will definitely be changing the tuners for some Vanson locking tuners, and the p/ups for some Vanson alnico 2 p/ups (as I am not fond of ceramic p/ups). These parts are very reasonably priced and are very good. I'll look to see what the nut is like, but I do tend to go for Tusq nuts - again, not a costly upgrade. And, if I can find a brass stop-tail that fits, I'll add one of those, too, to help with sustain.

      Star Man
      I would suggest to consider also a roller tune-o-matic. With stock tailpiece but with new roller-saddles my HB sc has increased sustain by min. 15%
      Be carefull to aquire the right dimensions: diameter of studs and distance between them on the t-o-m
      Also: the rollers might be a touch higher (ca. 2-2,5 mm), so if the old TOM is sitting on the body before mounting the roller-bridge, the stringaction might get to high
      I swapped the pups with tonerider alnico II -- brilliant!

    That bow in the neck, is proper (assuming it's the right amount). The strings move more in the center between the bridge saddles and nut. If you had a flat neck you would have really high action. Also, you should not use a fret rocker unless you first adjust the truss rod to make the neck flat with no strings. You have the right tool to adjust the neck flat, but that should only be done for fret leveling.
    You are the second person I have seen recommending HB, I think I might just get around to trying them out. Thanks for the review.

It is fairly heavy and there are a couple finish blemishes, but other than that its worth much more than what I paid !!! I just ordered a DC custom from Thomann and am excited to get my hands on it!

    The Les Paul copy does not cut through the mix like a real les paul but to me that's not the mission here. Is it easy to play and does it inspire more guitar playing?
    My first electric guitar was shitshow. It was a baritone Teisco Soundmaster VN2. I did not know it was a baritone so I put 10s-46s on it. It was horrible to play.
    I broke strings constantly. My next guitar was a Korean plywood Strat with a decent neck but a trem that killed all tuning stability. Couldn't use the trem. Still allowed me to progress further.
    In 92 I bought an Ibanez R570 second and I've never looked back. Amazing guitar. 25 years later I was made redundant in Scotland after c.20 years. Got a decent redundancy payout, got another job in short order and had 20g to spend. I decided to buy my dream guitar. A PRS, I thought abought the 35th anniversary but I couldn't bring myself to swallow the cost so I bought a 2002 10 top in emerald green.
    It's amazing. Plays and sounds beautiful. Dream accomplished.
    The thing is you start playing guitar on a shitbox but you don't know any better . If you keep at it and start to have a bit more money you prioritize getting a better guitar.
    When I was 17 guitar was my life. I spent a big amount of student loan on the Ibanez and a Boss ME10 pedal box.
    Best money I ever spent.
    After probably 10 years I gave away the me6 to band member because I had a roland rackmount fx box and a pedlaboard for it and I still play the RG 570 today all the time. These guitars out of Japan in the 90s were some of the best guitars ever made in terms of quality of build. I replaced the bridge pickup with a Dimarzio Multibucker and microswitches coil tap.
    Just an amazing instrument.
    Loving the PRS now but still playing all my guitars especially the RG570.
    Luv and Peace.

    Watched this review to get some pointers on HB. You covered it pretty well. (I'd prefer if you mention the neck thickness, width, weight and other quantifiable terms in some sort of measurements rather then heavy, medium, light...) Also thanks for addressing the setup issues with all guitars that rookies would normally assume were ok upon delivery.
    BUT BUT BUT... why would you do this when you can buy a REALLY good guitar - albeit used - from a site like Reverb.com? I found a single-cut gold top PRS right after watching this vid 9/12/20 for $495. A PRS for 495! that is a no brainer. There are some other PRSs out there for under $400 and no I don't get a cut from PRS or Reverb. just saying

I fully agree though, you can get some fantastic used guitars on Reverb, I have two myself that I got through them. I'm guessing yours is a PRS SE? They are amazing guitars for the price. The only thing is the guarentee and shipping issues. The great thing about Thomann is that you can return items no problem if you end up not liking it. With Reverb it's always a bit of a hassle.

    Great guitar. Your left hand needs to think more about the work it has to do, and learn to get more fingers on the string for your bends, and to just stop and then slow way down so you can analyze what is the best way to play a given part. Don't just hit a note without figuring out what is the best way to hit that note. It is a whole lot more work but work is good. Just play like one riff, or a collection of notes, over and over, slowly until you perfect it, with both left and right hand on the picking. It is not just the left hand, but also the right hand too. But for you the left hand is the weaker hand, and so it has to work a lot harder to hone in on how to get a quality tone. Start small, and super slow, until you find your best tone.

    Isn't it desirable to have that slight bow... relief in the neck??
    Also...aren't you supposed to tune and set the intonation in your playing position? One thing to keep in mind... everyone frets with different pressures... so intonation cannot be perfect for every player.

    I just bought an SC-400 (this model) B-stock as a base for modding. Holy crap, it plays well. Fretwork is perfect, neck feels great, tuners and nut give perfect tuning that stays where it should be. And the sustain is excellent. Great!
    The pickups are good enough that they don't immediately need replacing. The clean tones are warm without being dull and there is a real distinction between neck and bridge sounds. Pots, jack and switch are fine as they are. No coil split or anything fancy.
    So it plays well, better than many guitars choosing a lot more. Unfortunately it *is* ugly. The matte copper-coloured "gold" top is a fingerprint magnet, so is the back but you don't see that. The biggest cosmetic problem on mine, though, is that edge between the front colour and the back looks like it was done by a blind man riding a camel down a cobbled street. But that's why it was B-stock and cheaper. It would still have been pretty ugly anyway but that doesn't bother me. I bought it to mod but I don't feel it needs it (I still will)

    Thomann says it is a LP style guitar. They do not claim that it is a Gibson Les Paul clone guitar. It is simply a LP style guitar which is what it looks similar to, but it is not a Gibson Les Paul clone. They have taken a very well known & copied look of a guitar & modernized it to what people have actually wished for over the years. As for the tuning stability issues I would suggest you try this to determine if it is the machine heads or the nut. Tune the guitar, stretch the strings several times, re-tune. Now simply press down on a string (repeat on each separately) above the nut, if it does not return to pitch immediately when released, you have determined that the string is actually binding on the nut. It is not a machine head issue.

    I can understand cheaper parts being put on an inexpensive guitar such as this but having to do some major work like intonation, fret work etc, pricing it way out of range for the low quality of this guitar. The flat paint finish also looks cheesy. Hb has other models like the LP 450, which may be a better deal and look much better with the woodgrain showing, imo.

    This thing sounded surprisingly good in the mix ! I wouldn't recommend a chunky neck for learning on though, but honestly for a hundred quid I think this thing's pretty decent. Obviously with a cheap guitar like this, it's always gonna need a set up 'cos there's no way it's coming set up properly (they just never do), so factor in an extra £30 for that, but it's still cheap as chips. As for the inlays being a bit iffy - have you taken a close look at gibson's inlay work lol - it's usually garbage and always has been.
    Ultimately if it tunes up and stays there, and if it sounds good and plays ok after a set up, then it's a winner in my book.

      I do not understand why retailers do not routinely set up instruments before (or even after) they offer them for sale. When I was a schoolboy / student (a long, long time ago) I would have gladly worked for nothing in a guitar shop learning to quality inspect / control and set-up guitars on evenings and weekends. Today (in Europe) you would have to pay minimum wage; but only apprentice and under eighteen rates. After a year or so a young lad/lass could afford a decent instrument with staff discount. Maybe stay after work for lessons and/or a jam session with their friends? All teenagers, however well-off their parents or their potential career, will benefit from 'work experience' and knowing that they earned money rather than 'handouts' from their parents.
      In the UK parents are most likely to buy their offspring's first 'guitar kit' from a 'box shifter' such as Argos. Competent music shops cannot compete with their prices but they could offer 'added value', good advice setting a young musician on a path to success and thereby gain a loyal customer.
      Guitar teachers need to be proactive in their local advertising. e.g. Offer the first 30 minute lesson free of charge with parents present. Teach them how to buy a good instrument then charge a fixed fee to set up the instrument for the pupil and demonstrate how setup is so important.

      It's the cheapest classic model single cut style guitar. It's not including build kits, strats, teles etc. There is one other HB single cut, but that's a student edition. 'So what I told you was true, from a certain point of view' - Ben Kenobi ;-)

    Raise the bridge pickup to make it less thin, but more importantly, make 100% sure that is perfectly parallel to the strings. That is by far the most important thing when messing around with pickups. One time I bought a fantastic Van Halen style parts guitar that was super awesome, and sound amazing with just one bridge pickup. I added a 2nd pickup by the neck, and when I did, I messed up the parallel-ness to the strings, and it sounded terrible. I could not figure it out. Many wasted years later, I finally figured out the problem, and fixed, and it sounds bone crushingly good.

    Watched some of your reviews now. Interesting and amusing. I have been tempted by the HB LP's from time to time but I don't trust bling and have managed avoid temptation without necessarily filling my ears with wax. However, unlike a Strat which someone once described as the equivalent of a Kalashikov, it seems to me they can be complex with that set neck and quirky tuning issues. This does look like an ideal platform if you decide to upgrade from the start.

      Thanks for the feedback. I believe that the setup for these types of beginner guitars is essential. I was scared to death to adjust a trust rod when I was starting off, so the neck should be out-of-the-box ideal for a beginner. It's little things like that which make a huge difference and it's all about quality control.

    I bought a Harley Benton strat a few weeks back. I didn't have a single coil in my collection and at the price I thought what the hell?
    It came set up OK that is to say two strings were kinda dodgy in terms of intonation. The Nut is really bad that makes the trem useless but that said the guitar is OK. The frets are thin but there's no jaggies to hurt you as slide up the neck. The neck itself was straight and the basswood body for £65 melts my mind. I used to buy plywood strats from Korea for £150+ back in the 80s.
    Decent solid basswood although in three glued together pieces makes this a decent sounding guitar. Sounds like a strat. Punchy and single coily.
    It is noisy though. No shielding so if you want to take it live you have a job ahead of you.
    All in all for 65 quid it's the bargain of the century and there is massive scope for improvement. A new nut and maybe a wilkinson and then maybe lace sensors or similar.
    Bargain guitar I wish had been available when I bought my fist semi new guitar in the 80s. (Ninja Nighthawk. Plywood black strat with a very shady floating trem that was kinda a Floyd knockoff but no locking nuts.
    It was great at the time but now I look back on it as fatally flawed.
    Replaced it with an RG570 in 92 so it's all good.
    I'd frankenstratted it and replaced 2 pickups so I gave it to the vocalist in the band I was in at the time.
    Luv and Peace.

    On pause during unboxing. I'm jealous! You actually had a sealed outer box with more packing materials than I got and I'm in the US. The bottom of my box was just utterly smashed and there was reciprocal damage to the butt (eg busted a crack from smashing the strap button into the ground and destroyed the button). I do find it funny the inner box, like mine, has tape but is not taped shut.
    Resume.

    • @Canabai
      @Canabai 4 роки тому

      Seriously, I'm ONLY complaining about the packing and shipping; NOT their guitars. I bought a PRS SE Custom 24, I'm more happy with HB. In fact, ecstatic over my ROI. Player quality instrument for player pricing, how can you beat that?

  • @rjeff753
    @rjeff753 5 років тому +3

    Any guitar that is shipped to you from anywhere (if you did not buy directly out of a music shop in person) will need a setup when you get it. Truss rod adjustments, height set to your liking and intonation set. I do care how much you pay for it. Simple changes in humidity from where it came from to you will cause some of it.

    • @BasementGAS
      @BasementGAS  5 років тому +2

      Normally I would completely agree with you. If I am ordering a guitar from Japan or America, I would also expect that. But from a store that markets and sells their own brand that is barely an hour away from where I live, I would expect their quality inspection and setup to be slightly better. I'm not expecting every guitar to go through a plek machine but intonation and checking the inlays takes 5 minutes and would make a huge difference to a beginner guitarist. Still, for the money, the guitar was in really good condition. For that price range it still gets a 9/10 from me.

    • @misterknightowlandco
      @misterknightowlandco 4 роки тому +1

      Robert is totally right. Ive had guitars get whacky just because i left the dehumidifier on in my basement too long. Anything shipped to you needs to be set up. Ive taken guitars from one room to another in the same house and needed to retune them. Wood shifts and moves. Just nature.

  • @genebrenner855
    @genebrenner855 5 років тому +4

    Great review. A couple things. Many experts say to set up guitars with a small dip in the neck. Some players like it really straight. "Rolled edges" refers to the fingerboard edges, not the frets. Again, a nice guitar for the money.

    • @BasementGAS
      @BasementGAS  5 років тому +1

      You're right, it's personal preference really, but I think for beginners a straight neck with a low action is more advantageous. Rolled edges does refer to the fingerboard, you're absolutely right, but then the frets have to be rolled off as well otherwise you're going to have jagged edges and slice open your fingers...or not? But yeah, definitely an amazing guitar for that price tag. Hard to beat.

      They do hold a patent on a neck joint design. Problem is that reading the patent seems to paint a picture of the neck joint of about any guitar. Gibson is not known for letting brands use much off their designs if their lawyers can help it. They are also known to patent designs that they did not invent. the patent I am referring to is US4027570A. I am not a lawyer by the way.

    From Leo: With bargain basement guitars from Thomann being so good, adding another $800 really does not get you a whole lot extra. Except for something awful, pickups are generally not good or bad, they are what you like or what you don't. It amazes me how good the paint and finish is on those guitars.
