ALSO! One of the reasons of Bella's disappearance could've been the urge to show how developed aliens are in the new game, compared to The Sims 1 where they were just a tiny addition.

I have to really respect what they did with Bella's story. They created one of the most iconic characters in the video game world, and without the mystery of her disappearance she wouldn't be nearly as famous. I find it so interesting to see how the creation and marketing of cult characters work.
I mean yeah Bella was iconic in TS1 to begin with (that red dress and the graveyard man)
But TS2 propelled her into another tier of stardom

I think the same thing. My theory is that Dina first convinced Don to flirt with bela, so Mortimer would caught her cheating and divorce her, but when she refuse making out with Don (as proven by his memories) She came with another plan, contacting her alien family to abduct her. And then I think that Dina Planned also that Don should marry with Cassandra, so both could get the Goth money and stay as lovers, but don is so afraid of marriage that this did not work out in the end.

Bella was initially designed to be a gold digger. She is also a romance sim. She would have desired to cheat. The no chemistry is is good haha

I played the sims 2 sinceI I was like... Maybe 10 years old? I didn't even notice that they made some story line for pre-made families, and even went through the trouble for making long family trees. I played the sims 1 so of course I know bella. And I know goth family is also in the sims 2, but I feel stupid coz I didn't notice that bella is missing from goth family. Even though I played that family. I never noticed she is gone after a few years of playing until I watch youtube videos, and then I was like, "OOOHHHH!!!"

Aliens were so hyped in the early 2000’s, probably the reason why aliens in sims 2 base game was a big selling point connecting to the most iconic original sims game household, the Goths. And the whole drama around sims 2 families honestly was the best this they ever did, i miss that in the newer games.
I find it so interesting that most other people played the Sims 2 by trying to unravel these mysteries and playing with the households that were pre-made. I played this game for over a decade and never bothered with them, just made my own family trees and stories. Surely I'm not the only one who did that
Most of the time I created my own familys but they had really interesting storys so I also played with those
I used to share the game with my sisters and we had one of the pre-made neighborhood for each of us and we didn't let the others use them (and of course we could create more but I preferred the pre-made bc it already had families there with their own relationships) so I barely played with Stangetown

One time I added Bella to the Goth family with the “Tombstone of L and D” and I was able to play as her, I then went to play as the Broke family to resurrect Skip. When I went back to the Goth family, something crazy happened: Bella kept on going more and more transparent (Like a ghost) and then disappeared, I got a message that said: “Bella has died on another lot” Cassandra and Alexander then got a new memory that said “Bella Died”. I went to the family tree and Bella was greyed out, I also couldn’t see a Tombstone, this must be what the death token has an effect on.
Yes, exactly that. If you don't delete the token, this always happens after you reload the family.
I literally saw Bella walking around my town last night. It was a custom world, with no townies, so I have no idea how she got there.

I think since she's a hidden sim she just got a 'purpose' treatment. She was originally put into game to be used for storytelling screenshots, backstory and genetics. But it's the same situation as with the original Nervous Subject, found within game files. He is the *actual* son of Olivia, was used to build the backstory for the Beaker fam but for whatever reason was put aside once his purpose has come to an end and was replaced by a sim we all know as our Nervous. I just can't figure out why they would make two different sims for that.
Also the lack of personality and the default cancer sign may mean that the sim was actually incomplete/not meant to be playable? I mean, it's the case with other 'purpose' Sims like ideal plantsim who is missing all the crucial personality elements because there was no point in adding them ☺️

i was playing the sims 3 lately and adults went to that trip and the son and father came back but mother didn't. I got my own Bella Goth.
And then the father died like 2 days after becoming an elder so it was two teenagers and their 23 years old brother... Somehow he is more strict than the parents ever were

Even the Grim Reaper has this face! And if your Sim's face resets, it turns into the 2nd template.
I think this is the better face, because it maches better with other faces templates when making a child. The only think I hate is how it looks on elder females, because it turns to be so thin

@@antoninko It is a bug, Tara Cat and adult woman (I don't remember her name) from Kim family have face shape from second template and when they age up to elders, they have face which looks like that from modthesims. I've read something about wrong cheeks/cheekbones mapping or something on female elder face, it wasn't fixed in CAS, but it was on these Sims, these Sims I mean Tara Cat and the Kim lady
I think you're right on the end. I think they made a random goofy story that could be open ended, letting the players do whatever they want with Mortimer and thought that players wouldn't care as much seeing as you can make your own stories with the game. Normally, if people can make their own stuff in a game, they don't like playing side characters.
I think people got so involved in the story after they realized Sims *always* come back from being abducted by aliens… so why didn't Bella!?!?
12:23 Regarding the Waterview etc. When creating games, you usually start with "test" location, to learn how to build the map. When developer get to know their tools and how the game works (many mechanics can come later, than the map), they start working on the actual map. Notice how most games have a good introduction sequence, then there is mediocre central part of the game. The ending is usually the best part. That's because devs learn their own game while developing it. No one "feels" the story and the gameplay right away. You have to learn it.
I think that the Waterview etc were placeholder cities used to learn the Engine and whole game mechanics. When they were sure about it all, they got creative and just made something fun and exciting.
I believe The Sims 2 had this route. I am developing my own game and I have done 2 placeholder maps before creating something, that I finally approved as final game map. The last map, that I will do is the boss one, since it must be the best one :)
14:10 With the face it could also be an error with documentation. Someone wrote down, that the bella's face was nr 1 with the following changes. Someone else was building Strangetown people and just created Bella with the first face, not knowing, that they added a new face. Btw I am curious if it is possible to check if changes made to Pleasantview's Bella are the same, that were added to Stranegotwn's Bella.

I just find it really funny that they unintentionally caused Bella to become basically the face of the entire sims series. Even people who don't know the sims games and don't play them know about Bella goth. She's essentially the sims' mascot at this point.

What they COULD have done is make a story where you could "earn" the real Bella back, through Cassandra or even Mortimer. Since Mortimer is a Knowledge sim, why couldn't he investigate somehow? Hell why couldn't the youngest son investigate?! He already writes a book in Sims 3 about his mother's disappearance.. I dunno, this just seems disjointed and lazy of EA.
Maybe Alexander tried to change something, by going back in time and writing a book, so that Bella's story would not happen, and at the same time created another dimension called The Sims 4, where he lives with his parents and sister in Willow Creek?

An unmarked quest if you will to bring her back, maybe even non Goth Sims could do it, even if they'd have no attachment to her, their knowledge and curiosity could be the reason....although the real reason not everyone would want to play one specific family just to get her back.

I'm just assuming the whole abduction thing was planned all along. As Marticore stated, they might have wanted to showcase the more developed aliens in the sims 2. There's a ton of other sims that kind of went thorugh the same thing, like Nervous, Skip, Darleen, etc, who have clones for whatever reason that replaced them in the final version of the game. I'd just like to know why NPCs such as social worker and carpool drivers are so broken. Despite having completed personalities and skills, they kill the game over time when controlled.

Their looks being possibly coded and the second template possibly being the original first template makes me think her face swap could’ve been a communication issue. Maybe when they were making S Bella they already added new first template and didn’t realize it was a different one when altering it, but they did remember what alterations they made to P Bella’s face. Idk if that makes sense

A lot of people dont take into account what was actually going on behind the scenes at Maxis when the game was being developed, absurd crunch, people were still working on sims 1 expansions, it was a total brainmelt, it did create a pretty quirky game. No office fires, just a lot of overworked, multitasking people.
I feel like you should’ve mentioned the Roth family as well. I honestly believe that family was made to tell the story the Goth family was going to have if Bella did not disappear. This could support the theory that Bella was mistakenly given a dead token.

Long story short, every fan theory is correct, because there's no canon story created by the developers. The biggest mistery of the franchise has always been just a clever advertisment campaign to stimulate fan speculation. Without the mystery, Bella wouldn't be nearly as iconic as she is and the Goths would be a forgettable generic artifact from the past. Whoever decided to mess up with the fans and just remove her like that was kind of a marketing genius.

It's more possible that what happened was that Bella was given the disappearance plot was decided after the face defaults were reordered.
So when someone went on to remake Bella for Strangetown, they were told to use the default 1 face.
Which was originally the now 2 face.
It's the easiest explanation for as why they use different faces.

I think SimPE gives a good idea of how this whole mess functions. I played around with relationships when I wanted to make my Servo sim part of the family tree and give him the "family kiss" interaction, and it's kind of a convoluted system that makes room for a lot of unconventional family relationships, actually.
There's the family tree ties that are pretty much a separate system from flags for relationship types (such as "spouse", "sibling", "friend" and such, and i think it's possible to make a lot of odd combos of those, as far i remember they don't even have to be mutual between the 2 sims). This way you can place them anywhere on a family tree, but have them treat each other in a completely different way (first time i messed up and made the robot a grandchild of a sim on the tree, but didn't set the family flag, and accidentally made them get romantic since they didn't treat each other as family).
"I am dead" token has nothing to do with relationships, it's not even a deceased status per se, more like a tool that hides a sim so that they never appear on lots. Now I kinda wanna remove the token from an actual dead sim just to see how that works :D
I did a cheat on one of my sims and gave them the death token cuz I thought it would kill them, and out of nowhere after all was going well for a few sim days she goes to work and then comes back dead. No reaper or grave, just gone and dead in the family tree. I gave it to an elderly sim so maybe that's why?

This is one of the best video I ever seen about the mystery of Bella Goth. I always hated that generally when people talk about the mystery say thins like: "in the game files there's this or there's that" but didn't show actual gamefiles because start fast as possibile with crazy cospyracies theory. Now I finally seen this infamous game files with the tokens and things Hidden by developers and have much clear ideas about my own solution of the mystery of Bella Goth😁

THANK YOU for sort of debunking the fire theory. One of the people that worked on the Sims 2 said that there was no fire and that their vision of game changed over time like: how to game looks and the UI. They were even going to add 3D rain and refections but the rain kept on going through everything and the refections made it choppy. Also, if there was a fire... wouldn't they have back-ups? And I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have everything run on the same thing.
The look is mainly due to the lighting system. Most of the objects are the same even in early media. Originally it shared the system based on the Sims urbz with the time cycle from SimCity 4. Somewhere in development, either testers or programmers were complaining about the game being too dark and so the night time was turned light blue instead of red scale used in sc4.
It's standard game development like any other game. If they had to start all over again it wouldn't have come out when it did. I guess a fire sounds more exiting to people than just....game development.

I will tell my theory here:
Don Lothario wanted to have a romance with Bella, but was rejected. Dina Caliente married Bella's brother, so he probably said to Dina that his sister married an almost millionarie, then Dina got interested. The Caliente sisters are aliens hybrids, so maybe them still have contact to aliens (ive seen in some places that they dont know about this, but idk if they know). So when Michael died, Don and Dina made a plan, Dina asked aliens to abduct her, since the sisters maybe had contact to aliens, so Don asked Bella to hang out on his house when the aliens were coming, and that happened, and they dropped her in strangetown.
Also, she only remembers that she loves her family.
i once got bella from strange ville to marry my sim, so she'd become playable and then i got her to move to the other town, and she wasn't related to her kids and i was so dissapointed

two things I noticed about strangetown bella that I think say she was the first to be created, generally the portraits have male and female variants and several couples in the base game use each other's pose variant, strangetown bella's pose is the female variant of mortimer's pose, the voice that alexander has as an adult is the male variant of strangetown bella's voice, ok I know you can't prove much and it could just be coincidence but I wanted to say that

Thank you *so* much for talking about the technical side, this answered a lot of my questions! She was my favorite character and something I was always obsessed with as a kid who had dial up internet and had no way to figure out the technical side 😂
The chemistry thing, the "fixed" all the pre NL sims to have a correct chemistry. Since she is hidden they wouldn't have bothered to fix hers. However he not being attracted to Mortimer ties in with the story in TS2 for PS2(I think that was the game). You explore strangetown and one of the goals of the game is to discover everyone's secrets. Bella's secrets tell use that she never loved Mortimer she married him for the money. So it makes sense that she is not attracted to him.
One thing that might be over looked when making TS3 is how not rich are the Bachelors. I mean they have like 3000 in the funds. Plus Bella marring for the money, makes no sense as Dina married Michael for money. So either this was over looked by the developers, or maybe Michael wasn't on the best terms with his family and had made money on his own as Bella and his relatives never knew of Dina. Like I don't think Mortimer would have gotten with Dina if he knew that Dina was his wife. I often can't sleep as I find more plot holes in this story 😂😂

THANK YOU for addressing the different face templates for both Bellas! They're clearly different women, even their voices.. I was always so bothered by that. Great analysis in this video.
My personal storytelling is that Bella died under mysterious circumstances and Mortimer is delusional about her fate, believing it must be aliens. As he was a scientist before retiring, his grief overtook him and he attempted to clone her in some way, but after creating a first successful clone, he regretted it and rejected the new Bella. The new Bella eventually left for Strangetown and decided to begin a life there. I usually end up changing her name to smth familiar but different, to signify her rejecting the identity of being Bella Goth.

Maybe the aliens genetically modified Bella so when she arrives in Strangetown she is more conventionally attractive and they can use her offspring for their experiments. Haha I know this never really happened :P I just love theorising about Bella. When I was a kid, I'd move her into a lot in Strangetown, remove the lot from Strangetown and put it into Pleasantview and move her back in with her family, but they were always just like 'Who the hell is that?'. Not exactly the big reunion I hoped for!

@@Marticore Yeah and the main voice is Don's voice because you can hear his voice and dialog when your sim talks on the phone. The other voice is a deep one... the one that usually has the dialog of "oooh, magufa" lmao
Yes, there are two adult male voices in the Sims 2, Dave Boat and Stephen Kearin (from the Sims 1). I have a theory why there are two adult female and two adult male voices in the Sims 2. In the promotional pictures during development, Sims 2 have young adult life stage. A set male and female voices were supposed to voice young-adult life stage and the other male and female voices for adult life stage. Because young adult life stage scrapped from the the base game, the voices are used for adult as well.
Yap, Maxis messed up so much in the old Neighborhoods, but since some player taked their time to working out some better solution, im happy to playing them again.. and again.. and again. There are many rumours out there, but nevertheless, Sims 2 is my all time favorit game, no matter what. And i have some very special UA-camr's who i closed in my Heart forever. i think as u said that was a marketing move make Bella disapear, also idk why but i feel that since sims 1 Bella has been trated as the perfection, the ideal sim like wiht her name, the game descripctio: "Elegant and athletic are two qualities that describe Bella. She enjoys a variety of activities from golf to miniature golf.", plus since the begining Goth family have been on the game, they got even relatives in pets sims 1 expansion, their house is enormous and the only one which has graveyards ... was the perfect scenario to creat a mistery, not just for her disapearing plus we never see her growing or "decadence" like she still perfect, never cheated her husband, never had an argument/fight with other sim etc and they still exploting this. In fact i thought that her mystery was part of the gameplay and this was one of the reasons we could resurrect sims to solve the it (i mean specially premade dead sims) which its funny bc this is one of the tones of causes which can cause the corruption of the game XD we complain about sims 3 or 4 but damn in sims 2 u can corrupt the whole game doing little nornal things
Bella in the Sims 2 itself is quite self explanatory as you described. It’s all her other appearances that’s super weird to me. The interview is like an amalgamation of all the fan theories and she says she loves Mortimer, but then the PSP game ignores that and the memory loss angle and says she only married Mortimer for his money (oof) but stayed for free premium cable… weird since the Goths have no TV… except in the GBA game where Mortimer is an elder, Cassandra is an adult, Alexander is a child, and Bella has reunited with them and they love watching the Strangetown TV show… then she appears in the Facebook game and the mobile game, and I kinda don’t count them as she’s just a tutorial character… then she turns up in Lunar Lakes, dead. So in the end, Bella’s whole deal was that she loved cable tv too much :)
Bella got herself abducted on purpose so she wouldn't have to see the downfall of Maxis.

Another interesting fact that proves that Bella is actually a hidden NPC in The Sims 2, and not "deleted" or "dead-alive" is that the game legitly recognizes her as Cassandra's and Alexander's mother: if you send Alexander to college after Mortimer's death, Bella will be the one in the growing to young adult cutscene with him!

I remember when my sister & I installed Sims 2 for the first time, at the time I didn't know English very good - she was reading the back story and I was sooo sooo sad that Bella was gone (cuz they were my fave family in Sims 1)
We tried a lot to return her (back then you couldn't find cheats easily)... at first like most users I though Strangetown is the real one, but nah she wasn't (has no connections)
Then, at the time when Apartment Life came out, EA/Maxis published that Bella Goth dairy online - which seemed like it was made up in 2 weeks just to fill gaps in the game... and yet even then, you couldn't retrieve her back
I agree this brought her fame & to the game itself in general, but still... I missed her a lot
I never played as the Goth family but when you buy the painting of Bella she will walk by the lot. If you wanna interact you have to be quick
from SimPe, Bella actually has memories, personality, etc. the data was there, but if you include her to the household using the Tombstone of Life and Death cheat, for some reasons they were wiped, maybe because it was never intended for players to use this cheat to bring her back.
Her relationship to Mortimer was also actually 85 for short term and 95 for long term (and 0 for both with her children, the game just generates mom - children relationship score when you cheat her back) the relationship and family tree were created that way so she wouldn't just show up in community lot, just like Maritcore said. (yeah i tested quite a bit while fixing clean hood, and this is the way to keep the story in tact)
When you move a Sim or family from one town to another town, all their memories are wiped out. I always thought that the developers moved her to Strangetown, so her former family remembered her but she doesn't remember them, but your speculation is more plausible.

Moving the real Bella to Strangetown would've been corruption galore - which is what I think they'd have loved to done as a pre made family - but the most irritating thing is the fact they couldn't make the townie in Strangetown identical to the one in Pleasantview.
I liked the Bella story in sims 2, I wish you'd have been able to play her though in Strangetown as mentioned before. I think there was a lot more story to be had making her be an abductee, and it also made the Caliente and Lothario family more interesting and got them more popular by association in the sims universe.

I feel like S Bella being on the milk carton was an idea the devs had after they already came up with the disappearance story. They probably only did it to add to the storytelling and just happened to grab a photo of S Bella since she was more easily accessible in-game. S Bella herself may have been a last-minute idea, which would explain the difference in looks; someone thought “Hey, wouldn’t it be crazy if Bella reappeared in Strangetown with the whole alien storyline there?” opened Create-a-Sim, didn’t change anything about the face and just put her in Bella’s hair & clothing.

I really enjoyed this side of the story! I'm not a technical person myself, and I am one of those who runs off with theories and Lore, but this certainly made me very interested and for the most part I think you are correct. Although it is fun to create your own stories!

the real mystery that always got me in Sims2 was how that single mum could get pregnant when you played her by her dead husband, but he was (given the memory and screenshots or at least one of those) dead for too long for her to be pregnant by him haha
My theory about Bella's face is that Strangetown Bella came first, since the neighborhood is full of artifacts from it being made in an old game version. With her, the milk carton was created, then they made Pleasantview or restarted it and made that Bella based off of face 2, which carried onto the PSP version.
Seems like they couldn't quite make up their minds. They should have just kept it simple. Either not have her in the game and have her only mentioned in lore, or only make one Bella and make it so you can find her in some unmarked quest where she remembers everything upon reuniting with her family. Instead of the weird clone, kinda fake out thing they did.
The chemistry isn't always bad between the two. Bella's and Mortimer's turn ons and turn offs are randomized, and for example if she's turned off by logic or grey hair, or he's turned off by black hair, their chemistry is not good. If you make them drink the renew potion you can manually choose these turn ons and offs. Sadly, there's no "natural" or "canon" level of that sort of attraction for base game premades.
Turn ons and turn offs aren't the strongest factor of chemistry, that's why I mentioned their incompatible aspirations.
