So well explained, I hope there are more students that will take advantage of the content provided on this channel. We are quick to point out the overt allusions in his work but fail most times in why it was used. There must be greater meaning in all of Eliot's prose that we must continue to research. All too often we think that because a poem was covered in High School that it loses significance. Which is hardly the case.
In "The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock," one fragment that I have delved into somewhat, that many may believe is of little concern, "like a patient etherized upon a table." I asked myself, "ether is rarely used anymore, why do physicians and surgeons use other forms of anesthetic?" Ether is a very acrid substance that may burn patients. Another important aspect to ether is that sometimes a patient is not completely "under." So, where Prufrock was taking us, there will be pain and there is no reaction but you will feel "it"

In The Wasteland, so clearly. In Four Quartets too, though the message is in reaching union with the present, past present future being one.

Hi, just on the point about 'reacting to romantic ideals and neoclassicist writing'. Agreed that Eliot did this in his form, but he also did strive to keep the past, including literary tradition, alive in his poetry. How do I/how would you reconcile these two facts in an essay?
