DungeonCraft #7: Why Craft Your Own Dungeon?

- With so many types of terrain available, why would you craft your own modular dungeon for D&D? It's fast and dirt cheap, that's why! Professor Dungeon Master builds terrain that is less expensive, lighter, and more versatile than anything you can buy. Here he reveals the tools you'll need to get started.
I've been following this channel for over a year and only this week have I started to watch the early videos.
Crafting and painting miniatures is the final frontier for me in this hobby, but resolved to give it a try based on your videos. I've been DMing for since the 90's and something I've never attempted.
Thanks for the compliment. FYI--my Dungeon Tiles 2.0 are coming within the next few weeks!
It's been 2 years, curious how you've progressed!
@@JustPokey the crafting not so much, mini's though have been painted quite a bit since then. You won't see any in the art gallery though haha
@@thereluctanthirelingdungeon tools are great, but I get more reactions from my cliff stackers.
you forget, not only are they cheap and easy to make, but also they LOOK really friggin good too!
Absolutely!
Why build your own dungeon? because it's awsome!😎🔥🎸 🐉
Thanks for putting these out! Grateful to be able to exploit your knowledge and experience.
Thanks for watching. I plan to release an updates version with smaller, more portable, gridless tiles before too long.
Mostly crafting info already known, but cool to see where you started with crafting.
I bought hard into Dwarven Forge, but I also find negative spaces superior to walls.
Great video, I was considering buying at one point until I realized how expensive it was. I bought all the stuff to start making myself, and this video helps out a lot. Thank you, Professor
This is definitely another fun video. I've made the decision to start using tiles for the games my kids and I play. This is the beat hobby ever. I really appreciate all you do for the community Professor. Thanks A Bunch!😁
Thanks for watching. I'd check out Ultimate Dungeon Terrain first. Also, XPS foam comes in 1/2 inch sheets now, so there's no reason to glue foam core to tiles anymore.
Oh, dear--I'm in trouble now! What started out as a small gift is about to blossom into full total obsession!!! I admire your artistry, oh revered Professor Dungeon Master. I am about to go to school on your videos. Thank you!!
Thank you for doing this video series. I look forward on watching the rest of the videos and making some dungeons.
Make sure you check out my "Ultimate Dungeon Terrain" video. Cheers!
I just made a whole box of these tiles in just two days these are awesome you can make a ton for very cheap good work and thanks for ideas and crafting inspiration
You are welcome. Look for my version 2.0 Dungeon Tiles, Coming soon!
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 i cant wait and i hope you do your roads too
@@VortexmikeandShidow Oh yeah.......roads! I have footage on that. I'll work on on it.
I like to play somewhere in between theater of the mind and terrain; I have a dry erase battle mat and markers, with simple cardboard tokens to represent players and some NPCs (monsters get drawn, usually just a circle with a letter in it). We still use our imagination to visualize, but the specifics are laid out regardless just to reduce confusion and to give the technical players something to use without explaining every combatant’s position in detail.
By the end of the year tho I’m hoping to make enough terrain to justify buying minis, and I’ll switch to that.
I bought some dungeon tiles from WOTC, and they were good, but this video takes things to another level. Really inspires me to try new things. Great video!
Love to see the wooden stairs in the Inn. Cheers!
The wooden stairs will be the subject of a future episode to be filmed this summer. They're made of black rubber foam I used to craft my stone stairs with balsa wood glued to the outside.
Great video, I like the dry humor. Well done.
Thanks for watching!
Simply amazing. I wil start to craft those for my next campaign. Painting on the other hand...I'll do my best.
I have no idea why I only ran across this channel now...but...happens! Glad I found it just the same. I am a big fan of DMScotty and Wyloch and I've been building terrain for just over 2 years now. I now have an embarrassing amount of terrain but, hey, reasons right? Like you, I am pretty frugal and I also don't like the walls that the name brand stuff has. I started DM'ing a few months ago and vary between theater of the mind, use of terrain, and even hybrids variations of each. I appreciate why you don't use terrain for the Lovecraft stuff. Use for a dragon?...yes! Use for C'thulu?...probably not.
That's my feeling. Glad you found the channel. FYI--I 'll be shooting a video about how to make my NEW dungeon tiles shortly. They're smaller and easier to transport. Of course, DM Scotty, Wyloch, and Black Magic Craft rock!
You have to slip someone at UA-cam a twenty to get on people's suggested videos
I just use a set of dry-erase tiles ("The Master's Atlas" by Stratagem). It's a easy, cost-efficient halfway-point between "Dwarven Forge"-style model-tiles and dry-erase grid-maps. You can just draw things like extra walls and stuff on them when you need to and if you are doing something more "theater-of-the-mind" you can just slap a few down for a quick battle-map.
I never want to order Dwarven Forge again. I'm liking and following.
Never used terrain...but am definitely going to make some and use it... just started painting mini's..now to craft some terrain.
Cool! Before you do, though, wait until my NEXT terrain video, to air sometime in February. It's WAY better than the Dungeon Tiles I made last year. Less time, less money, better looking results. Stay tuned!
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 will do!!
This is fantastic stuff. Totally glad I found this channel.
A tip for new crafters: If you've never done much with an Xacto knife before, don't buy an Xacto knife! Don't buy a knock-off either. Go to Amazon and search for B01J21POXK and see the Fiskars product that comes up. You don't have to get it from Amazon, that's just a convenient place most of the world can search for it easily.
I would normally not be suggesting you pay a premium for a Fiskars product ($9 with one blade!?), but I'm going to this time and I hope the Professor will approve. But … the blade Does Not Slip, at all. I can't say that of a generic Xacto-type knife nor the branded ones. They always do. An experienced crafter doubtless knows how to deal with that, but if you don't, I'd say get the better tool and avoid getting to learn what realistic blood looks like. 😁
Cause it's fun. Oops don't want to anticipate the climax.
Yep!
Great versatility... and I want to travel through your sewers! I must know how you craft the little walls.
That sound kinky!
*Neat .*
*Thank you for the crafting tips .*
Great channel!!!!
Great viewer! This video is a very old one. If you want to make your own dungeon, skip to this one (and look for Ultimate Wilderness Terrain on Wednesday). ua-cam.com/video/dQqhTiE7i84/v-deo.html
The first crafting video 😎
If you got pencil and paper a 2d terrain works in a pinch
Nice swagger
Great stuff!
I like cheap easy to make easy to store portable sounds good I've liked and subbed but the real kicker for me is you look like Egon Spengler from Ghost Busters. (Bet you get that a lot huh?)
Chris P. Bacon...I dig the name and makes me hungry for...breakfast for some reason...hmm... Like the 2ID patch as well!
im gtting to the origin , i will try those craft
How many rooms and passages would you recommend crafters start with? I've made two rooms and three hallways, thus far. These tiles are super simple and fun to make, by the way. I tried the ultimate terrain with foam insulation, but I found it tough to work with. Maybe I'll revisit UDT in the future.
ok, so they're super cheap and fast to make and something that almost every DM wishes they had. does anyone sell dungeon pieces like these? It seems like a cool product that would easily undercut the pricey and/or heavy alternatives.
cool
Hey can someone give me a link to the theme at the beginning and in many of his videos I’m making a grim dark campaign and can’t seem to find this theme
“Fury of the Dragon’s Breath” by Peter Crowley.
I found it from a link from one of your other videos “oppressive gloom”
ua-cam.com/video/iwHhXfpUHfs/v-deo.html
Yeah I can see why you wouldn't do this for call of cthulu. A large amount of the horror in that comes from the players' own imagination.
I"ve played mostly TotM--with hand drawn paper maps & simple minis (chess pieces or other scavenged from board games) and never got into the more 3d variants you show here, let alone some of the more elaborate sets available. I've done that kind of modeling too, with HO gauge trains.
What are your thoughts on paper minis & paper maps? (like Zen: zenseeker.net/PaperMiniatures/Fantasy.htm) Even a shoe box is getting to be a bit much to carry around these days. I don't currently play at home--either traveling or online.
Speaking of which--what's your take on online play?
Totally bingeing on your channel! It is so refreshing to find like minded gamers who aren't locked into a particular system. Looking forward to soaking in more great material!
Thanks so much for posting!
Could make the dungeon crafting quicker by buying tiles that already habe a "stone tile" finish. Heh!
