I'd finish the speech with an actual sincere toast... Marcus Aurelius style wisdom. Definitely agree with opening up with some humor or a funny story.

Hey! The fact you're watching videos like this and doing your research (even if it is only a week out), is a good sign! The vast majority of people don't do any research at all.
My biggest suggestion is that you start focusing on your speech now. Hopefully this video gave you some good ideas for how to build the structure. Personal stories are key, so start to put together a rough draft of a speech (it doesn't have to be perfect).
The next step is to start practicing every day. Let's say it takes you the next couple days to build the speech, that still leaves you with a full week (7 times) to rehearse going over your speech. I promise you that's enough time, but you need to get after it now!
Best of luck, dude! Let me know how it goes, or if I can be of further help :)

Was a success thanks, I started with a childhood moment, went on to do the groom's qualities, briefly followed by an endorsement on the bride and their relationship
I had more than one compliment. But it was more heartfelt and positive speech, thankfully it wasn't entirely my responsibility in the end - the other stand in best man did a neat comical finish. So between us both we covered it all.

@@t0masibrudoctor534 way to go!! Glad you went with a speech that was authentic to your relationship. Coming up with something last-minute is incredibly hard, and it sounds like you knocked it out of the park. You should be very proud!

Did one in 2017 and basically got told to get off stage by a very rude lady on the front row, got one in under a month so the anxiety is high

I'm so sorry that happened to you! Why did she do that? Was she intoxicated? That's so upsetting.
I can understand why you're really nervous, but just know that the situation you described is really rare, and it's definitely her issue, not yours. Keep your confidence high, follow the tips in this video, and you're going to do great.

@@feedshank8207 I'm really glad it went well. The more successful public speaking opportunities you have, the quicker that rude lady moment will fade from your memory and your confidence will continue to grow!

i have a few months to go an i am very nervous. my friend/coworker just tells me i am going to be the best man for his wedding how do i cope with this?

    • @wadepaterson
      @wadepaterson  4 місяці тому

      Three things:
      1) Remember that nerves are normal, and part of the process. Even the best public speakers get nervous. The key is to transform that nervousness into positive energy.
      2) Practice. A lot! Run through your speech a number of times until it becomes second nature.
      3) Remember the purpose. The goal is to give your friend/co-worker a special memory, and to honour that individual on his big day. So deliver the message from the heart and do your best.

Hi there! I'm so sorry I didn't respond sooner, for some reason I didn't receive a notification of this comment.
I'm so deeply sorry to hear about your husband passing. I think the best advice I could give is speak from the heart. This will certainly be an emotional and difficult speech to get through, but at the same time, there's an opportunity to celebrate your daughter and honour your husband's legacy.
-Write out things you'd really like to include in this speech. These notes will act as a reference point of the message you're trying to convey. (While I usually suggest not to rely on notes, I think that structure will serve you well during this difficult type of speech.)
-Speak from the heart. Be sincere and honest about how things have been, but transition to the positivity of your daughter's special day.
-Include a personal story. Was there a special memory your late husband and daughter shared? This may be a nice thing to include within your speech.
      -Conclude with optimism and positivity.
-Practice. Because this is such a difficult subject, you will likely be emotional on the day. Each time you practice, you will build that bit of confidence... because communicating what you want to communicate to your daughter is what really matters... and practice will help you do that most effectively.
My heart goes out to you and your family. Best of luck this Friday.
