How Rice Took Over Nepal (and why it is a problem)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 бер 2023
- Rice/Bhat is our main staple diet in Nepal. There's hardly any day where we do not consume rice. But the interesting thing is we did not consume rice like this always. Our love for rice is very recent.
But we import most of our rice from India creating a massive trade deficit and also recent studies have shown that rice may not be the most healthy and nutritious crop. But how did we reach here?
How did this one crop that was just consumed by people from upper class, and some limited families became such a important part of our diet? This is the story of Rice.

Heyo I’m a Nepali who’s been brought up abroad & I don’t understand everything but I’d love to learn more about Nepal!!!! Any chance you can add subtitles for future videos? Maybe it’ll reach a wider audience too 🫶🫶 love the work you’re doing!

Ohh my god, is this a freaky coincidence?
I was researching why my family got diabetics all of sudden in the last 2 generations and the culprit i found was rice.
It's been a week since I changed my family's diet to that mostly consisting of kodo (millets).
And we can already see the changes,
Blood sugar which was around 140, now hovers around 100-105 for my diabetic mom.
I too feel less hungry, more energetic and my bowel movements are regular and easier.
Rice has helped in the population boom but it isn't sustainable for the long term. I wish other youths like me also made the shift to millets, barley or oats.
This would inevitably make us more self sufficient, one family at a time.
Cheers and as superb video as usual team.
what can be the best alternative for rice on daily consumption? Other than MIllets and wheats
@@makadoxvsdk9530 well as stated in the video, what is available in your region?
The best one for health benefits is millets
You can also consume whole grains instead of refined grains.
There are plenty of choices but for you, need more information.
@@makadoxvsdk9530 Chickpea (chana) is pretty good alternative, more protein and fiber than rice and enough carbs. Also, soya chunks is another good one. Lots of protein and lots of fiber and almost no carb.

Yes!

we can replace rice with millet as it has various advantages.
1. Nutritionally better
2. Can be cultivated in even less fertileable land as compared to rice. (Because of desertification and and deteriorating soil is a huge global issue it is claimed to be the food of 21st century).
3. consumes and requires very very less water.(as you said we nepal depend almost entirely on rainfall on raice cultivation and decreasing ground water level is the exponentially rising global issue).
4. Can help us to minimize trade deficit.
Please make one video on it. Thank you so much

since I found this channel I have never forget to watch any video of theirs. Such an informative theirs work must be appreciated.
Great research and information
Rice is probably the cheapest starch / grain in the market right now. As you said, inhabitants of a low income country like ours will almost always prioritize price and availability over all other factors. There has been a slight increase in the consumption of non-rice grains, yes. I attribute this to great marketing and awareness, bringing diverse grains and legumes from remote parts of the country into metro cities and ease of delivery via online platforms. Then there are "Thakali" style restaurants bringing dhindo to the masses, to people who've never had anything apart from wheat and rice their whole lives.
But most of the people eat these alternative grains once in a while, for a change perhaps. Their prices overall are still too high and the rampant ballooning of rice brands is STILL overshadowing alternative grains.
Government needs to step in, in association with private companies and rural cooperatives to do these things:
1. Plant high yielding grains that are naturally suited to their environments, like in the era before rice.
2. Adopt modern farming, harvesting and processing techniques to increase the yield and reduce costs.
3. Give incentives to farmers to grow crops that they should've been growing in the first place.
4. Award Geographic Indicator status to natively grown crops.
5. Market the local grains aggressively, add it to the menu of public and private schools as well as government institutions.
6. Make sure the price is low enough to be enjoyed as a staple starch by the poorest people and at the same time, make it appear healthier and glamorous for the rich.
This can be done, diet can be changed over time but the government needs to be serious about it.
nice content highly appreciable..!!!
It is a very good presentation to share the information on the history about how rice became our main food and the upcoming challenges related to rice.
Thank you so much.

This content must be rewarded ❤️
All aspiring agriculture professionals, students, must bring back lost products they know how
This is why doctors, researchers been saying why rice is not so so beneficial because our gene hasn't adopted much
Your gene has not adopted to maize, wheat or barley either...😂😂
@@vinayadhikari5413 yeah i agree. this logic makes 0 sense. Rice only came about 5000 years ago, probably introduced to Nepal within last 3000 years. Around the same as other millets. No where near long enough to make millets or buckwheat more favorable than rice.
Dipesh dai, I appreciate the efforts you and your team is putting on coming up with simple yet much needed topics like this. I, myself as a enthusiast in self improvement and health conscious to some extent can't be more thankful enough to The Nepali Comment team for bringing this issue up. ❤

Very nice info.

Would have been better if there was a info included about brown rice and red rice. Does it grow in Nepal ?
One of the very important points you highlighted out was the traditional method of rice cultivation which does not provide much yield. One of the major issues are the big number of Nepalese farmers who are leggards (they just don't want to adapt new techniques and technologies). It's one of the most uncared problem in terms of production in Nepal. Government should do something about this
India didn’t banned wheat export because of low production it’s because of Russia and Ukraine war. Well. You guys are doing amazing work.❤ Thanks
Such a great video..
Yo honi video vaneko ..thks bro good information video❤❤

Great research thanks bro.. please provide this video to our krisi mantralai
I think we as Nepalese can't do without rice now. It is a staple in all households. We know its bad to our health and to top it off its extremely bad for our environment. I mean it , its really bad. I just hope we find a good substitute before its too late.
There are plenty of alternatives actually, and you don't have to shuft diet all at once. Maybe once a week, or every couple days, replace one bhat meal with dhido or roti made from darker grains like millet, buckwheat, and barley. And from there, gradually shift you and your family's diet to what you feel comfortable. That's what my family did, my mom started making kodo and phapar ko roti every few days, and we all like it more than rice.
Yes hajur i can't eat anything accept rice . Masu baat is compulsory during dasai for me
