- DON'T buy another plugin before watching this video .. it might just save your next production!!
My name is Paul Third and I am a Scottish youtuber / audio engineer / mixing engineer / audio geek. I mostly cover audio engineering related content ranging from audio plugin shootouts / plugin comparisons (acustica audio plugins, universal audio etc etc) to actual analog vs digital / gear vs plugins plugin tests via access analog and mix analog. I even include ddmf plugindoctor tutorials in my plugin reviews so you can be your very own plugin tester and experiment and understand whats actually going on under the hood. I also discuss digital music distribution from time to time and like to give my viewpoint on online music distributors such as onerpm and distrokid.
All of my audio blind tests involving music production software are conducted in avid pro tools 2021 which is my main daw and I also use HOFA blind test 4U as my blind test software. In terms of my audio interface I record and monitor through a universal audio apollo x6 through topping dx7 pro+ dac/amp and use an se dynacaster for all of my voice overs.

What are the plugins in your arsenal that stop you buying other plugins? 🤓
N4, with Tim's stuff i'm covered.
Melda for years now and basic daw plugs. Every now and again something jumps out and impresses.
LA2A from Waves because it’s cheap and good, can’t afford a hardware version to freaking expensive 😊
Kush Novatron and Blyss. Probably because it's the first time I made an effort to get to know the plugins, but I just find them dead easy to get a sound I like.
I've bought almost all the UAD Plugins last year ( UAD Ultimate within their selling discounts ) and really find them really good for what I want
“Plug-ins aren’t Pokémon cards”- Sun Tzu-Quoted by Paul Third
🤓🤓
Such a great saying lol
B-b-b-but Paul, this new plugin has such cute animation. It's bound to sound better.
The whole unison marketing summed up in a sentence 😂
@@PaulThird 😄 Stay safe my friend.
Well said, brother. I've wasted so much money on stupid plugins over the years. It's down right embarrassing.
🤜🤛
Ugh god man, this is such underrated advice. Plugin marketing is just outrageous nowadays.
🤓🤓
ya it's really off putting these days.
Dude you're too funny. I mean you are hilarious. I can't understand for the life of myself why your channel isn't over 1 million subscribers. Anyhow, I agree with you. I recently started mixing in Harrison mix bus Version 9. Now I know how you feel about Harrison's claims but I don't want to get into that right now. What I found through mixing with mix bus Version 9 is that I don't need as many plugins because GUI is laid out like a traditional mixer and it forces you to use what you have like having a traditional mixer. So I don't go for trying to grab multiple plugins I just use the built-in EQ and then compression and saturation that's inside of the software Channel strips and I've been getting great results. The only time I grabbed a specialty plug-in is when I want to add something to sweeten up the 2-buss or a sub group.
I don't like the channel strip plugin but I've heard a lot of great things about working in the daw 🤓
95% of what you need is already in your DAW, the other 5% is mostly creative stuff not included. Sure there are better reverbs/EQ's/Compressors on the market but I think they are only situationally better(except really good natural reverbs).
Led Zeppelin II was recorded all over the place using what was on hand and mixed in 2 days on some basic console in NY and it sounds lovely to this day.
🤓🤓
Yeah there's definitely a lot of cash grabs out there but when I saw that video... I ended up hitting the not interested button. He was on a tear with very little real understanding to speak of at all. Not that he's wrong about not needing to buy a bunch of EQ plugins! 😜
This great advice is also universal as l have seen the same dynamic at play with photography and video creators obsessing about gear so much that it takes away from their creativity and feeds into the never-ending commercialist rabbithole of incessant acquisition & hoarding of gear. These days, when l look at online "tutorials" or "tips" of any kind, l check to see if their channel focuses more on gear or creativity/creating. I believe many artists have been lost in the fog of gear, shit is sad.
🤓🤓
This video also is for electronic music makers , so much of your favorite music was made with not the most cutting edge gear.
Some of my my favorite sounds were made with FM8.
Not chasing the hot CURRENT thing when you probably have enough tools is my mantra
That being said Glitchmachines Subvert 2 was ten bucks. I HAD TO
🤓🤓
FM8 has a dated interface, but its not like there are any new FM/PM synthesis techniques over the past 40 years so its pretty much does everything you'd need. Dexed and Operator also do almost everything unless you want some very complex routing not in one of their "algorithm" presets. In which case get my free M4L synth ;)
No plugin will stop the desire for new plugins. It is like what drink will stop your desire for alcohol...addiction like gas is in your mind.
That's why need plugin castration 😂
I think that being a freeware guy early in my mixing career helped me a lot. I only purchase plug-ins that specifically help with what I believe the deficiencies in my mixing style are. Master the basics and you master the mix. Great advice!
🤓🤓
I finally came to my senses and stopped the bleeding of my wallet on plugins. I bought way too many and now I've organized them in my Plugin Manager so I know what I have. I don't believe plugins are a scam....I'm just weak when it comes to new shiny things. They didn't forced ppl to buy the same 1176-style compressor eight times. Now when someone asks for advice, I tell them to buy just one of each type they want after demoing them and then sit on them for a bit. I was so busy buying them on sale that I didn't even use the ones I bought first.
Yikes UAD reoccurring nightmare 😢 until i picked up my lunch box and found with a few pieces of hardware i used less and less plugins and everything became less complex. Pro Q and L and hardware gcomp
90% of a good mix is knowing what to KEEP from the rough. Changing everything for the sake is THE amateur move. THE BEST investment I have made is in a good A/B comprarison plugin. I got REFERENCE from Mastering The Mix, and its LUFS matched A/B to reference the roughmix always at the same level as my mix. Then you Realise for rea what you are competing with and what you should KEEP, which is VITAL. There are bunches of other good A/B plugins. Its the only thing that I could truly not live without.
I use reference but I do sometimes find it's lufs match can be a bit buggy sometimes
@@PaulThird I was so excited I capitalised random words... meh lufs matching Is still a darnsight better than subcociously keepin the rough quieter and impressing yourself with your work, which seems ubiquitous amongst engineers.
Plamen
NoiseAsh Motone EQ Pro
good saturator plugin (NoiseAsh Satura e.g.)
bus compressor
AMEK Mastering Compressor
Sonible smartLimit
NoiseAsh Tamer
BOOM Interactive Uberloud (RMS/LUFS Calibrator)
and Plugin Alliance bx_masterdesk PRO (for in-phase Wide As Hell STereo)
...and that should do it for the plugin level of the game.
No, no, and no. But I will say that I used to be a bit of that kind of a doofus victim. Then I realized that mindset was not what music and mixing is about at all. Too many think mixing is all about technical Tipz n Trix shizz when in reality it is exactly what Paul Stanley of KISS says, about touching the heart. CLA understands but he probably knows that ppl watching YouBoob Tutz don't want the truth so he shows what he does but never really explains why. But at the some time, he does with those odd terms like Bark & Bite. They are how he explains how it touches his heart.
When you are getting paid for a mix you tend to just use whatever does the job quickly. Spending time A/B ing what eq to use on the snare just means you earn less for every hour you work. It can be hard to apply that mindset when mixing your own stuff though. That often takes waaaaay longer and turns into a plugin shootout rather than a mix. Theres usualy a deadline when mixing for someone else as well.
Yeah I'm glad I did all that shootout stuff before I started to mix for clients. I just go through my template and get on with it
@@PaulThird It's funny because pretty much everyone that gets into mixing etc goes through that phase. Or over editing stuff perfectly to the grid etc. Nowadays the thought of having to learn a new plugin turns me off buying anything 😂 unless it's a useful tool that makes mixing quicker. Spend money on monitoring as that makes the biggest difference as you have been mentioning in your vids.
I stopped buying new plugins after: Soothe2, Gulfoss, UAD Fatso, Analog Obsession, Fetish, Ableton Glue Compressor or Logic Stock Compressor, Purple, Pink, Taupe, El-Rey, and Sand from Acustica Audio, Pro-L by FabFilter. I don’t need anything else. Stock plugins from Ableton or Logic for effects.
🤓🤓
It’s the same with audio interfaces lol you can get good quality with a focusrite solo you don’t need a Apollo plus you can barely hear the difference between the two… just get a good mic then mix it
If the song and source material is well recorded through good mics and the performances are stellar none of that stuff will matter
I rarely buy plugins, but i watch you because you're a cool dude
🤜🤛
A plugin I’m using a lot is access analog. Slap an LA2A or 1176 compressor (when needed) or a 1064 channel for EQ, and the neve MBT on the master. I’m trying to stop using a bunch of plugins.
🤓🤓
I probably bought 1 plugin in the last 5 years.
Professionally I use freeware because there's usually no danger of them stopping working, but also to prove a point!
I love Chris Basefords last interview, he basically says "if you need topend then grab a plugin that gives you topend boost it and move on! "
And it's true that's all there's it's to it.
The in issue will always be the ear training (knowing you need that topend) not the tool. Any arguments over the type of topend from what type of device are purely arbitrary at this point.
🤓🤓
The plugin industry has won
Won a very long time ago with Waves and then plugin alliance
I am still searching for the plug-in that will get my clients' music played on the local radio stations. CLA and Serban Ghnea seem to be in possession of that plug-in but not myself.
Apparently it's called "well produced recordings".. Fuck knows what that is 😜🤣
@@PaulThird 😂
Getting the most out of Kyma, the creative tool from Symbolic Sound. No need for purchasing an endless amount of plugins thus saving myself big bucks in the long run. I've acquired personal confidence and knowledge learning from Carla and Kurt, the creators themselves, with help from the friendly Kyma community at large. Highly recommended for all sorts of music projects.
I've never heard of it!
Absolutely agree. My go-to compressor is the Logic Compressor--stock! And I own Waves and many other 3rd party titles. Why do I use it? Because I'm the most familiar with it.
🤓🤓
I noticed this with me bout a year ago, me now I go by what I hear. and I tend to use the plugin that can help me fix the problem the fastest and easiest. Doing this I spend less time mixing/mastering and I noticed my final product comes out crisp, loud, and clean. a win is a win. don't over think it.
🤓🤓
GAS (PAS?) is hell of a drug.
After 20 years I barely see any new plugin worth buying or even trying. I have tons of plugins and I'm using only a few now. Even that I'm working on variety of genres. But I had to go through the path of aquiring all those plugins to finaly learn that 80% of them are useless (or are useless for specific genres). Myths, legends and misinformation doesn't help, epsecially now in the era where everyone on YT is a mixing/production expert.
UA-cam has definitely added to the problem
Furst Eq. That's your 1st Paul Third branded plugin mate. I can see it now "Furst EQ - the quicker you mix the better you mix." You're welcome ;)
The line would be "furst, second, furd" haha
Well said. I agree with everything.
But sometimes (sometimes!) you want to pay for inspiration) Personally, new acquisitions inspire me. Even if I won't use it later, but here I am reading the manual, watching "tips & tricks" and working with new inspiration).
But this obsession of manufacturers, trying to pass off every product as something unique just fucked me up.
🤓🤓
Hi Paul, Thank you for the video, was wondering what your thoughts are on the stock eq in studio one. Are they enough to be your all round Digital Eq?
Yeah nothing wrong it
When a new plugin comes out and everyone's promoting it like it's the big new thing just remember to ask yourself if you already have something just like it.
Good mental check 🤓
I don’t buy plugins for mixing. I buy plugins for more creative possibilities. So, this naturally curbs the GAS because concepts that truly increase the ability to create something new, are far and few between.
🤓🤓
🤓🤓🤓
Remember to check out my mixes on the working audio tools podcast 🤓
Luckily, I've mostly done subscriptions, which I cancelled because I didn't use any of it. But back in the day, I did fall for a Waves sale. 😂😂
Didn't we all haha
Horizon Waves bought it early on without knowing what I have…and I go and check if I have it there first. And surely enough have stopped from buying a lot of plugins 😂
🤓🤓
Dope video but it over-generalizes why people buy lots of plugins. I, personally, just like to acquire additonal dsp's to add to my collection, and have the financial means to not be adversely affected by doing so. Plugins buying is a much cheaper habit, comparatively than having a shoe, clothes, food, gambling, etc spending habit. As with anything, the issues isn't the spending itself, but the financial effects of spending...also,the decsion-making process of tool choice, in a session, is seperate issue. You can have a very limited collection, and still be indecisive to tool choice.
It's youtube which has a short attention span so had to condense. Any longer it would have flopped haha
i only want one plug in. It should be able to make my voice sound like Robert Plant instead of worse than Lou Reed. Thats my holy grail. Everything else, maybe not......
That's called A.I. Vocal replacement 😂
i started back when with cubase 3... bak then u needed plugins caz the default were merely gain, phase, eq, delay, a terrible compressor... nowadays the default set in the daw is more than I ever had even with purchasing 10 or 20 plugins... so yeah, with current gen software u should be able to do dam near everything with default.
🤓🤓
"Paul Third say's Don't Overanalyse It!", you should put that on a T-shirt, simply because of the irony!
I know 🤣
"don't over analyse it, until you've pre-analysed the shit out of it"
Agreed. The plug-in 'thing' overall has gotten way out of hand.
🤓🤓
I wonder, what happened to Paul First and Second?
They were too slow to the egg hombre
But plugins are fun!
This is all you needed:
2 eq plugins, 3 compressor plugins, one reverb, one delay, one saturation and one limiter! Oh wait there is more you need to get! 😂😂
There is always more haha
Great advice here Paul, we need to become au fait with stock plugins before moving on to others.
I think we should become au fait even demoing any plugin. That's what the demo should be for. Too many buy and then learn it, some never do and then get distracted by the next plugin offering
The "oohhh piece of candy.." meme works best for me haha
My new wiev is use many stock plugin as I could... And an last video you said emulation plugins made too much saturation... So I recreate emulations in my daw ( fl studio ( in patcher )) .
🤓🤓
When I mix vocals I always forget about the dubs/adlibs. Mix the whole thing send it to the artist.
Artist: where are the tags.
Me: 😯😬
Just to highlight how dialed in we get staring at the tree... that we can't see the forest.
🤓🤓
Wow, what a timing! I have a video out today about pretty much the exact same general topic - use the gear you already have (from a perspective of a guitar player, who the last days found himself again being blocked creatively by GAS and the excuse of "if I have THAT, THEN I can achieve what I want").
It really seems like big portions of the market are flooded with gear-launches, hype-trains and marketing campaigns, since this video and this topic in general seems to resonate with a lot of people at the same time.
I'm glad it's been well received 🤓🤓
You and i know.. Still gonna buy more plugins..i need to go to the Betty Ford clinic...
Just blind yourself... That's the only solution 🤣
PS don't actually blind yourself haha
waves plugins are enough
I have an easy approach to plugins:
Get the one out of the bunch out there, that I like the most, and never worry about the next releases.
Best example is Superior Drummer 3:
Got it in 2018 or 2019, haven't been interested in any other drum library ever since and still got the best today imo.
Similar with the UAD Studer and Pultec plugin, Fabfilter Pro-Q3, PA Shadow Hills, Pigments 4 and the list goes on.
For guitar and bass, there have been new hot amp sims every month the last couple of years (especially guitars) and I had too much interest in any new stuff. So I got pedals and a rack preamp instead and never have to worry about any new amp sim ever again, finding myself in absolute disinterest with those now too.
Sure, some of the things you like the most can cost a bit more than alternatives, but it gives you exactly the sounds you live and need, and instead of buying 4 different ones, you buy 1 product. In the end, you don't worry about new releases, save time, be the happiest you can be about your sounds from the start and save money as well. That shift in mindset and consumption changed it all for me.
Important message here, Paul. Thank you!
🤓🤓
I’ve been part of the problem 😮😅 Great insight
🤓🤓
This guy clearly doesn't get it. Buying plug-ins is a lifestyle. It's not about the sound. /s
#pluginlife
Going to engineer in other peoples studios where they have a different set of plugins available is always very telling. Fabfilter always seems to find its way over there though...
It's the "industry standard"
Well because they are simple and they just buy the entire bundle. And you get tons of upgrades forever.
Great advice Paul, stopped buying plugins a couple years ago, never looked back. O just got an email my plugin Alliance subscripion have a new addition, and Kush subscrition. Just gonna check now....
The subs will always get you 🤣
i should probably watch this video every day before I turn on my computer
I'm not gonna argue with that 😂
My very philosophy of mixing... plugins are tools to fix the things that annoy me, or enhance in ways that only they can do! I build my own plugins in Melda's MXXX which is perfect because "off the shelf" plugins usually fall short in some way, and I hate "workarounds"! I'm a certified (or certifiable) control freak 😎
Melda‘s rent-to-own deal is probably the only thing I would recommend getting to anyone who wants to go beyond the possibilities of stock plugins. It’s incredibly good and covers pretty much everything someone will need in their entire mixing engineer or producer life.
If I genuinely had melda mxxx from the start I would've just made my own plugins but I do use meldas own. Mautoalign on every mix and even mautostereofix will find it's use in premixing. I don't utilise melda as much as probably should but I just don't have the time these days
You have paint on your fingers. Don't know what else to say, it has all been said.
Now THAT is proof I done a good video! 🤣
BTW.. Got it on my new work trousers as well 🙈
You might have been part of **a** problem but let me tell you, you've been a big part of the solution plenty more times bro
🤜🤛
This is why i use hardware
looks like Paul "the Grey" becomes Paul "the White"
Do you mean the jumpers?
Music Producers are like wine tasters or art critics.
They're so obsessed with their 'craft' and eventual elitism that they totally forget that 99% of the population just wanna f**king drink wine or like looking at a picture!!!
99% couldn't care how it was made and cant tell the difference!!
I could give my mix of any of my songs to 20 producers and say, "this is my ballpark of how I want this song to sound, mix and master it in this ballpark."
I could then take those 20 versions to any high street in any country and slap a really nice pair of headphones on 100 random people in the high street and they would not be able to tell the difference!!"
people don't 'listen' to compression and reverb and how f**king wide your 8K bell curve is, they listen to the melody and the words!!
Hmmm... Its a balance. You can't be all the way to the left and just leave out critical details. There is still a bit of an art to it. Getting the right compression on vocals can genuinely be the difference from an alright vocal that sits well in the mix to an upfront performance that emotes the lyrics.
The top guys still take a bit of time into timing and how the track feels. Feel is more focused on the listener but to achieve it requires a lot of technical understanding and experience.
Bruce Swedien was experimenting with early reflections since the 70's to achieve depth cause he wanted a way of achieving the depth that quincy wanted to project.
Its a balance and understanding when you need to be a bit technical and when you don't. But even then there are plugins now that can allow your technical ear to do something in under a minute so you can still work incredibly fast
@@PaulThird yeah I get it, I was being a bit Internet melodramatic (to a point) but I still stand by my point that 20 different mixes would go straight over the head of the general population, you know, the people that actually buy the product.
But that's probably because the 'art' of music production has been refined to the point that the 'rules' of what sounds good is clearly defined so that anyone can learn them. The remaining 10% is just subjective preference.
Aye Ken what you are saying! I've spent WAY too much money on plugins. It's an addiction! And a bad one! However, lust for guitar gear I can get behind. I'd really love that beautiful white Gretsch you have in the background :D
Everybody says that. That's why I bought it as it was limited edition and Im too tight for a white falcon haha
@@PaulThird Love my short scale Gretsch bass - cheap as curry and chips and great for a guitarist that can't really play bass!
Dear Paul, besides of making a living out of producing music where i have to work quickly, i still am a geek that loves to play around and experiment. On top of that, i guess you know yourself, its extremely fun to find out which clone can match the hardware. It really makes me happy, and when i work again i use what i have found out in my playtime.... Also I need new tools to keep motivation high.😅
It was fun for me but after the 5th or 6th comparison it just got boring being honest
@@PaulThird well you did that quite intensivly... Pretty sure you will do some geek comparisons again. But no matter what i think you have changed the perception of plugins thanks to your videos.
Well said! I I love using the stock Studio One plugins and Metric Halo EQ/KHS free plugins. Amazing sound and nearly everything there. Some mixers get every plugin because they load producer sessions directly, and they need to have the plugins to load the session.
🤓🤓
Your opening statements on this video nailed it Paul. I bought too much Acustica plugins, thanks to your informative reviews! LOL. I like what i get from those plugins though, haha.
We live and learn haha
Damn, just bought a plug-in before I went to UA-cam and clicked this video 😂
🤣🤣🤣
Did you genuinely need it though? 😅
‘But it aliases like an absolute bitch’ 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
True story.... 😅🤣
The pulteq of my dream😂😂😂 this guy is crazy
DJ guy will learn one day... One day 😂
Analog world you had to commit!
True
I realised this a couple of years ago. These days, the same 12 plugins do 90% of my mixing. I know them, I like them, and they get me to where I need to be quickly.
🤓🤓
And what are this 12 Plugins?
@@HeartleaderMusic With respect, I think you've missed the point. If I told you what my 12 plugins were, that information wouldn't help you at all. My choices of plugin is right for me - but wouldn't necessarily be right for you.
I really wish that when I tried to learn mixing someone had sat me down and said "Ian, the most important thing you can do early on is just sit and listen to stuff through your monitoring system. Try to recognise what a well mixed track sounds like. However many frequency zones you decide are real try to learn what too much or too little in each of those zones sounds like. And for gods sake if there's a big glaring problem in one of them try to fix that first because that's the big apparent problem that's making your mix sound bad primarily. There's zero point in understanding how all the cool mixing tricks are done if your ears can't tell you where the problems are because you'll just misapply the techniques in the wrong places."
I'd have saved a fortune, but I probably wouldn't have listened because that sounds boring and is hard work whereas buying plugins is fun and there's virtual knobs you can fiddle with.
Related to this ... I feel like my ears have only started properly IDing things in the last wee while, it's been a gradual thing and because it's taken so long to properly hear things I've been fighting with my debut EP for ages. Recently as I'm now hearing better I've found myself working much faster, solving issues easier and nearing a point where I'm happy enough to send it off to mastering pretty soon I hope
It's amazing how important the boring stuff is and how most don't give a fuck about it at the start (I was one)
Whoa hey now, calling me out like that!? xD
🤣🤣🤣😅😅😅
Totally agree. Ear training is crucial! Knowing why you are editing/adjusting and not just being a slave to the visuals of the frequency spectrum. Nowadays, there are too many eye-candy distractions. Its music man! By the way. Ive got waaayyy too many plugins...
Yeah that's why I started creating macros in studio one where I can so I don't need to look at gui's
Bwahaha!
I agree... the only reason you should be spending a long time on a mix is if there is: 1. a lot to do 2. you are tuning automation levels and you wanna get anal with it or 3. You fucked something up in production and now you need to reamp all the guitars for the 7th time.
That's it... any other reason is dumb and a waste of time.
You forgot to mention nonsensical artist revisions 🤣
@@PaulThird haha oh yeh of course!
Plugin companies hate this one simple tip! 😂
The killer of all marketing 🤣
Ha that cla example 😂. So true
🤓🤓
Nah mate, you've got it all wrong.
Almost nobody who watches you is BUYING plugins. They may OWN hundreds of them, but they didn't buy them.
The Joy Of Plugins isn't what they do for the sound, it's the simple dopamine release scenario. It's like GAS (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome) except there's nothing shiny to hang on your wall. Why do you think DAWs like Studio One make such a big deal out of the wee thumbnails of the VST effects and instruments? Does it make it easier and faster to find things? Maybe. But it also lets you have a virtual wall to hang your plugins on, which is far more important.
[I unsubscribed to you ages ago, but every so often YT flings you into my space. I watch because you are a rare Scottish voice, and like me you are autistic. But I find most of your plugin talk really uninteresting and obvious. Not that you will give a damn! lol] The stuff I do find interesting is when you debunk the veracity and accuracy of a plugin. That's always fun.]
People DM me all the time just to ask my advice before buying plugins. I read every comment on every video so let me reassure you that a HIGH majority of my audience definitely buy plugins haha
@@PaulThird Yeah, I too have looked at your videos before "buying" a plugin. Yeah, I definitely bought ALL those plugins. Thing is, you could do a poll, but who is going to own up? lol It's the elephant in the room.
I don't need a poll I see the plugin boutique commission every quarter haha but I get what you mean now.
People are pirating. Tbh i don't know many but true not many will admit it
@@PaulThird Hey, as long as great music gets made.
You got me at Pokemon Cards 😂😂😂😂
🤓🤓
This is such UA-cam advice 😂 having new toys is inspiring!
Not if its something you already have. I don't understand how buying another ssl or neve emulation is inspiring
@@PaulThird well for a lot of people it is inspiring. Having something that excites you as part of your process can really help, like having a new guitar or synthesiser. Not for everyone of course. The fact that you can demo plugins before you buy them help of course so you're not buying blindly or based on other people's opinions. It's an expensive thing to do so not for everyone of course. Each to their own. Having made hundreds of records it's nice to throw new toys in the mix. I bought all the teletone audio instruments recently and did a very fruitful writing camp which was driven by getting inspiring sounds to work with, the process also included trying out loads of different mixing tools I've collected over time. I tried tried my collection of Arturia channel strips along with a bunch of other stuff. I have a growing vocabulary of tools in my head. For most people who are in the process of learning though it is overwhelming to have too many choices whilst trying to learn the basics.
You're just trying to steal the pleasure of having another piece of "that analogue warmth" in our arsenals. 😂😂😂
The only warmth you'll feel is from your wallet burning 🤣
@@PaulThird Like buying a 50th pair of shoes - it might be fun, but it won't get you any better in walking to your everyday destination.
Correct
You can experiment and play with differences, but just don't do it in an actual mix!
I have days off where I'll just play with stuff to put it through it's paces. And if it impresses me it stays in the plugin folder.
Another reason freeware is great is because there's no sunk cost fallacy so you don't mind deleting the ones you won't use.
I've been really liking Izotope's Neutron. It's everything you need in 1 plugin. Run the AI and then modify it's settings to fit your song.
I've been liking ozone 11 at the very end of the mix 🤓
I use Ozone 10 as well. The mid side eq presets are a big help.@@PaulThird
Plugins are pretty.
Not them all. Seen some howlers in my time haha
Well said sir! 🙂
🤜🤛
The thing is, Paul, that the technology has improved massively in the last few years, and plugins are emerging which are far better than previous incarnations. Case in point is noise reduction - AI has transformed how effective this can be - examples are Accentize and Hush. Remix software is also improving in leaps and bounds, eg Acon Remix.
And in the console field, Acustica has also developed its tech far beyond what it used to be - examples are Mystic and the new Salt EQ.
So while I agree with your general point, that no-one needs more versions of the same old thing, it is unarguable that new tech has improved the quality of plugins enormously, and thus made redundant a lot of the older ones. Which means I agree with you that more is less - new plugins like the above reduce the amount of the old plugins you need.

@@PaulThird I wonder what that means🤔
It's my polite way of acknowledging your comment 🤓
OK, got it, I thought you were having a laugh 🙂
Great advice, Paul. I'm only filling holes in my plugin kit now and only when I can afford them. (and they're on sale! 🤣)
🤓🤓
Great video.

🤓🤓
Totally true Paul.

If you are a pro, you will need all existed plugins. And know how to use it.
When that pro ever pops his 13 chins up from the computer and crawls out of his audio cave I'll let you know 🤣
Great video.

@@euangraham2636 I prefer Johnston's for adding a bit of colour.
I find that my threshold for a plugin making me actually interested in it is super high, and the market is full of shovelware. Beautiful shiny UI shovelware.
Shovelware is a good term. That and crippleware haha

I can get through just about any mix with 1 SSL EQ, 1 "digital" EQ, 1 opto compressor, 1 vca compressor, 1 reverb, and 1 delay. Until you can do that focus on learning how to efficiently and effectively use what you already have. You are just wasting time and money any other way. I used to buy every new (and old lol) plugin under the sun thinking it would be the solution to my problem. I just didn't realize yet that I was the problem haha!! I wanted the tools to do the work for me. That's not how this works, trust me! People overthink this whole mixing thing way to much. Keep it simple and you will find things get much much easier! Great video Paul, thanks man!
Ohhh and by the way. I have had a handful of those clients that sent me notes back asking me to "narrow the Q" haha!!!!! 🤦🏻♂
They can get to fuck! 🤣🤣
Great talk . Just reinstall OS and my main DAW and start taking note which plugins should be installed in my fresh system . Plugins which make speed up my workflow I hope . Thanks for insight and advices
