So I cut my teeth on all tube outboard gear and world class consoles. When I started mixing in the box I just use the same old standbys. LA2A and Pultec Compression, I use a Neve model 80 summing buss as well as a Neve channel strip (or sometimes an API or SSL console emulation. A good plate reverb plug and a lexicon one.
A pair of H style harmonizers for doubling vocals. I use a Neve preamp from a decent large diaphragm microphone or any tube microphone like an AKG solid tube or an AT 4060 both around $500 and they sound great. I recently switched to Luna since I was already using Universal Audios interface so I can use the real emulated world class preamp plugs. I recently tried waves harmony plug in …
A great writing tool and cool on guitar solos but not up to my standards for making recordings.
Still cool. So that’s not much in the way of buss effects. The cool thing is you can buy a single strip or effect and just duplicate it over and over on every channel just like patching with TT cables.
Keep it simple and record well.
    All My Best

It makes more economic sense to buy different DAWs for their stock plugins and soft instruments and treat those as “bundles”. Master two solid DAWs and you’ve got a hell of a digital arsenal at your disposal. Don’t forget to have fun, y’all. ✌️

    Alternate perspective:
In top performance finals, the difference between 1st and 10th is often with in that last (10% or less) that gets to you the finals in the first place… some times that last lil difference is worth it!

It seems like this video is more anti-Wave plugins than anything else. I think producers/engineers/mixers buy and use plugins not necessarily for functionality, but for convenience. If a new plugin offers speed advantages over what they currently use, they will pick it up. Most of what I buy these days is stuff from Plug In Alliance because many of their UIs do offer speed and convenience advantages and they are often on sale at great prices.

Absolutely love you Barry. You are speaking so much truth in this video. When I started my journey I initially thought I needed a lot of plugins and of course waves was it until I learned better. I did waste a few dollars but not too much as I quickly noticed the game. I only have a few plugins, none by waves as your stock plugins are better than ANYTHING by them. Thank you for calling out these famous mix engineers as they should be ashamed for prostituting themselves and taking advantage of people's lack of knowledge. I have no respect for them for those that do it. Everything you said in this video is correct. Me personally, my plugin list is a two channel strips from BWX, one two from soft tube and a few from Fabfilter and called it good. Keep up the good work.

I realized that having your really good recording chain is the key to a song sounding like a record. The problem with plugins is that we record straight to the interface and then we try to emulate a signal chain with plugins in a mix. Spend more time getting better at recording.

I'm guilty of this at times but not too bad about it. One major thing I changed in my buying process was going to Slate. I was not a Slate fan in the beginning. I am now an All Access sub and also own Trigger 2 and SSD5. Most of my other processing options now rarely get used. I'm not a subscription fan but the value and options I now have are really great. Trying out different configurations is now super easy and I've learned more new tricks now that I am a Slate user. I now use a select few from Waves and combine them with the Slate stuff. My workflow has sped up and my processing templates are more streamlined and productive now.

I actually did invest in total max3.5 by ik multimedia I bought it for the keyboardsounds and the roomcorection software, but actually haven't used both that much (sampletank loades slow as hell). Luckily their T-Racks 5 Suite and Mixox was excellent enough to nothave regret it. Also through a giveaway I have got NLS from Waves which is one of the only plugins where I can say it's worth buying. I still can't get the factunder my head that they try to pitch Magma Tube to everybody while NLS is so much better.
The only thing that interests me now in plugins is:
    1. is it a reverb
    2. does it run more efficient and faster than what I have
    3. is it easy enough to use and versatile enough
And since no plugin yet hasfullfilled these criteria, I won't buy any until then.

I agree on the CLA bit, but as you say, pretty much all these endorsed products are a retirement plan. I didn't like his multi layered plugins. Largely cos I'm not going to learn anything. End of the day, I doubt many /any of us watching are ever going to produce like Rick Ruben or Andrew Scheps.etc. If you don't like a product, or a marketing ploy, don't buy it, or sign up. Simple. I might say that most DAWS will have more than adequate stock plugins for the home producer.

With the exception of my SSL Channel strip 2 for drums, 1 or 2 from Waves for my master ch. At one point, I was in love with my VCM VST3 Ruper Neve plug ins, now I am just running most of the plugins in my Cubase or Nuendo DAW, which both have a ton of plugins already.

SSL sub is great because they're the originators not imitators of the console. I agreed wholeheartedly Barry you can can end up in a pigeon hole buying plugins that are not much difference than its competition. The same EQ, compressor, reverb is coming out on a weekly basis. I mean how many do you really need? like you mentioned a good channel strip and some nice effects plugins and you're on your way. Fabfilter is cool. The thing is most DAW stock plugins will get you there 85-90% of the time if you know what you're doing. Record great going in. If you eat bullshit, bullshit comes out the other end. Thanks Barry for all you do for the recording community especially for us newbies and rookies. 10 years is considered rookie status isn't it? That's all the recording experiencing I have. been a musician for over 55 years though. I might not be qualified to even comment on this thread.

People today have mostly hybrid studios, Hardware/Plugins. I have in collection 1 to 4 plugins of the same type, this plugin needs to be the kind that does things you can't find in a hardware unit. I prefer to buy quality hardware that works for me. In the end, you can get some of your money back or more than what you paid for the unit if you sell it. In case you don't use that much or don't fit in your workflow. With plugins that you don't use, they just take space in your machine so that is throwing your money away. You can work with a hardware for 20 years, not a plug-in because of fast changes in technology. Depending on the type of work that you do produce, mix, or mastering you can invest in useful plugins or quality hardware always having in mind that is an investment and you don't buy stuff for a collection. Use and learn your tools and simplify your workflow.

All you're buying is a pretty GUI...... well said! I recently tested this claim for myself and yep....most plugins are just repackaged default compressors with less range of parameter values.
I don't know what DAW you use, but in Ableton you can make racks. Racks are like presets but for plugin chains and have some cool extra features like parallel effects and mapping parameters to macro knobs.
We'll I just recently reverse engendered my most common third party plugins with default effects using racks. I replicated a few channel strips, Rbass, C4, LA2A, 1176, distressor and a pultec.
And I can confirm that most of those are just generic compressors with a preset, some saturation and a pretty GUI.

    This is absolutely true!
When I first got into photography, I was overwhelmed with all the different camera types, lenses, filters, raw processors, etc., etc. There is no end to the number of gizmos and gadgets that exits in the photography world--all promising to magically make you into the next _Ansel Adams_ or _Annie Leibovitz._ It wasn't till I purchased a fully manual camera (Mamiya RZ67) and only two fixed lenses that my photography began to improve. I wish I had 5¢ on the dollar for all that other sh!t cluttering my space.
So I've decided to do the same with my _"ear photography"_ and UAD plugins. I'm intentionally limiting myself to the Neve 1084 pre, the C-Vox, and the Neve 2254 compressor/limiter. Is this the best stack for every possible use? Obviously not. But it's good enough for my current state of understanding and my ability to hear sound. It has taken me years to _see_ good photography, and I suspect it will take me some time to _hear_ good audio. Having *too many* options is a confusing and time-wasting endeavor.

    Hello Barry!
Well, at the end if your video I can’t say whether I love or hate you. But you sure knocked Waves Plugins.
As for “new” plugins every week, besides Waves I get at least TWO emails a day from Waves, Antares, Softube, Plugin Alliance, Spitfire, Izotope at al.
So it’s not just Waves. It’s also funny that all their “special sales” are ending soon - since December last year!
One thing I whole heartedly believe in is that your DAW has all you need if you are just getting started. Growing your talent comes first. Then comes adding equipment that can boost your productivity. And I agree that you should shy away from the guys or gals on You Tube who say, “ You wanna be just like me? Then this is what you need.”
Today was the first time I came across your channel. I clicked on “About” and all it said was you have “merch” for sale. So what is Barry all about?
    Cheers and best to you,
    Gianni ❤

I had a uad card when it was sold by Mackie...the original UAD PCI card...and it came with the early LA2A and 1073 as far as I remember...also some early channel strips that are now renamed, and a reflection engine ( CS1)...
I think also some guitar amp thingy...
When it came time to upgrade to the pcie card...UA..gave a trade in price on the upgrade....and it worked well for me...I upgraded all the LA2A and 1073 bundle very cheaply...I mean very cheap..
So I bought the new hardware....but the plugins were updated very cheaply...and these are the daily plugins I use...
    All day everyday.
For the sake of comment, I use mostly virtual instruments...and so keeping system clear of plugins is really crucial.
That's why UA DSP is valuable.....I can run an extra orchestral instrument while still running a limiter and tape SIM without over using the CPU and ram..often I Max out my UAD cards while running large samples
I believe that even on the new M1 macs one can hit the max with large sample libraries....so on board DSP gives the option to see how things will actually sound later on down the line.
I own quite a few UA plugins...but I use these on almost every session I do ...I have a few dogs like " voice of God "...but mostly I'm carefull of what I buy....I find that the free system resources lets me compose more freely...and check how things will turn out later down the process..
I probably will buy an appolo, just because it will free up resources to run the ridiculous sample libraries composers can choose to use...even on the Mac mini...
Thanks for your content...really enjoy it

I stopped buying plugins after Heavyocity screwed me out of 120 bucks for the Mosaic voices plugin. After so long the serial number became void and when i bought a new computer and tried to reinstall and use native access and heavyocity, it wouldn't accept the serial code.

For the last year I have been moving toward using stock Reaper plug-ins as much as possible. Been doing this since 2007 and got caught up in the Waves game early. Of course, for plug-in instruments I can’t use stock Reaper because Reaper doesn’t have softsynths or guitar amp models. But for mixing tools, I’m trying to stay within Reaper’s vast offering of plug-ins. For free stuff, I use a lot of TAL. I completely agree with you about Fabfilter. I love to use their MB comp because of the user interface and how easy it is to use. Also something we don’t really talk about: I love Fabfilter’s preset management. So easy to go find where your user preset is and to keep it somewhere to use on another computer if you want or need to.

You have approximately 150 different pieces of audio hardware behind you on this video. Do you really need them all while you already have your audio interface ? Why you spent thousands of pounds on all these different pieces doing literally the same you already have in your logic ? May be you just need an options ? And some _new_ pieces of hardware are just a bit better or just more useful ? Or you just like to try new things for whatever reason ? This video looks like you're out of subjects to talk about and just invent these topics just like some publishers "invent" new plugins every month, because you make MONEY of your videos just like they make money from plugin ? Let people make their own mistakes but never limit them in their methods of exploration. Because you will cause talented people to stuck in their flow just 'cause you told them never buy new plugins and now they just don't know what to do with existing...

I bought a pack of "presets" for my Helix for 25 bucks, and immediately asked my money back. The presets sounded like crap and were borderline unusable, UNLESS I tweaked them, which to me personally defeats the purpose of owning a preset. Its suppose to be "pre-set." Nobody should have to pay to have some one give you distorted tones that aren't ready to use. "Pre-set" should imply, you're ready to go, out of the box. They gave my money back immediately. Its like they figured out a way to monetize the air you breathe.

What's your take on the Sound Machine Wood Works plugin from UA, where it transforms an acoustic/electric piezo pickup sound into a warm mic'ed up acoustic sound. This plugin has been hovering at $299.00 since it came out. I demo'd it and was really wanting to pull the trigger on it but, it seems so expensive. Do you know any rivals to this one for a better price?

If u are seeing this comment the rule in home studio is 1-Buy acoustics, 2-a good computer, 3-audio interface, 4-headphone(my recommendation 361)i already tried more expensives headphones but none of them beat akg 361 ,5-mic,6-a Daw

My issue with Slate vs Plugin Alliance is that Slate has entirely replaced selling individual plugins with their subscription plan making it unattractive to those of us who prefer to purchase individual plugins. Slate never puts individual plugin on sale anymore because they will ultimately make more money from their subscription plan, whereas Plugin Alliance still gives you the option of buying individual plugins for a reasonable price (i.e., $30). If I was just starting out the Slate subscription would make more sense, but since I'm not just starting out and have lots of plugins already it just sucks that I can't buy individual Slate plugins for a reasonable price.

I Truly agree Sir.. I believe less is Best.. For every plug in there’s a learning curve.. It like you know how to drive car .. however each plug in is a new dashboard to get familiar with! So it take away from your creativity.. Producer should just get there idea recorded and let a skill engineer, do his thing ! A Final Mix . Especially me doing Hip Hop music the younger generation have better equipment and make terrible music.

I have a tonne of plugins now. I really enjoyed playing around with them but i have enough now. I really dont need a single nother plugin.
there’s a company whose virtual instruments I really dig. Recently they released a nice one but their price suddenly skyrocketed. I mean the plugin is good but its not THAT good. At that point I realiaed they are just taking the piss out of us shiny object addicts. It made me feel stupid that i resented what they were doing. I had purchased every other virtual instrument in their collection. Recently they made that virtual instrument half price but its too late. They already red-pilled me with their nonsense. I dont need any more plugins. I have more than enough to make music and have fun. Ill be better off doing that then looking at plugin review videos.

All i want to do is run my 'Real' amp heads into my computer, then choose the speaker cabinet (or speakers, don't know how to do any of this yet?) out to stereo monitors for playing and recording I can not seem to find anyone on youtube who has explained how to do this ??? Does an Audio interface do this, or is for only running amps from a computer program. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to anyone in Advance.

Not completely true. In some cases there are really big differences between stock and 3rd party plugins. Did a lot of comparisons between Logic stock and izotope and NI plugins. Every time I give the Logic stock plugins a chance it feels like wasting my time. It all starts with a great soundsource. But to be honest in logic I feel that the stockplugins are degrading the audio. Especially when you want to go a little but harder. EQ, comp, limiting, distortion it just doesn't sound pleasant.

I am wholeheartedly ashamed how many plug-ins I have. I (like many) have prescribed to this addiction. Whilst not as caustic as many addictions every cheap ploy leads to deleting drive space, and more crap virtually cluttering the works. I have put my horse blinders on as of late. Often it’s best to simply think. Why do I need an app to indicate how my song will sound on different streaming source when I can do the research and mix it to spec. Whilst this deal seems like the greatest deal. Do I really need this? Is it more the Gui or the plug, and aren’t there better things to invest in? For instance if you have $ to burn donate to a viable cause, if you purchased a heap of tutorials watch the ones you haven’t watched already. I’d love to see you take this one step further by doing an A/B comparison on various ware to show ( for instance) how one board emulation, delay, compressor etc is often good enough. Specifically in the case of stock vs 3rd party plugs. Much appreciated

Is this called SAS then ;) These days if I buy anything it’s for a utility for something I either don’t have an answer to, to make my job easier, or the loyalty offer was too good to pass up and I do need at least 1-2 plugs In the bundle.. I like Izotope plugs for that reason - owned an Rx pro license so they offered me an everything license for dirt cheap last summer… Do I need everything they offer, nope. But the bundle is cheaper than the standalone. Same goes for NI.
