On the season finale of the sandwich series I’m headed out on a journey to explore a sandwich that has recently been gaining popularity in Japan decades after it original creation in a 1990’s Japanese comic book. I’ll head out to 969 NYC Coffee in Jackson Heights to talk to a Japanese Chef who has been mastering the craft of the Onigirazu. Back in the kitchen studio, I’ve teamed up with GT’s to give you a quick beginners guide to drinking kombucha as well as show you how to make some Japanese style pickles by taking advantage of the acidic qualities and health benefits of kombucha. Then I’ll show you a great way to create vegan style “crispy nuggets” to create the perfect filling for my homemade Onigirazu. @GTskombucha
Special thanks to Oda at 369 NYC Coffee and my Cousin Bari for providing me manga and anime knowledge.

japanese dude was so humble love it.
when he said “show me please” a tear almost went down my face 😭❤️ so beautiful
Cat ikr he’s so cute 😭😭😂😂
I dont understand. Why he said that
@@0707565 may be for pic
@@0707565 He meant it as "Can I take a look at the video you just shot?" I'm sure having someone come in to document his creation was incredible for him.
@@0707565 It's a joke he act as if he thought he was talking about another sandwich.
Its extremely heartwarming to see you give Oda the recognition he deserves. He seems like such a humble and passionate guy. Much respect to both of you.
When he said "show me please" I just smiled what a wonderful person 😊
This sandwich really is so ingenious. You are basically putting almost a whole bento in a sandwich. I love all the fresh elements with a little protein.
Rice ball? I think you're mistaken. That's clearly a Jelly donut ;)
Nothing beats a jelly filled donut!
It actually is, the "the jelly Donut was actually a rice ball"-myth was debunked on the youtube channel binging with babish.
ahhhh pokemon
Also reminds me of a Spam Misubi ...they’re delicious.

"Show me please" so cute
He really showed his passion with that question huh
Oda is a legend! One of our favorite people in this city
Yea my favorite too coz he wrote One Piece.

Thanks to Oda, I hope this video will make his restaurant more famous. I surely would go eat there.
And Brothers Green, thank you for your amazing content. I always enjoy watching your videos, especially the sandwich series.
The ring mold is a great idea... I've been making them by just stacking the ingredients which can get kind of cumbersome and messy. A good tip I've found is to lay a stick of cucumber or carrot (or anything really) on the outside after it's packaged in the direction of the sliced vegetables on the inside so that when you cut it, you can cut against them to get that really nice cross section
Oh my god - 969 NYC Coffee was my study spot the summer I was taking my boards! That Japanese man is so pure and precious he is amazing!! And I love that you were in my neighborhood and got to meet and learn from him. You're awesome man. Just discovered your channel and I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed by your commitment to authenticity, manageability, creativity, thoroughness in process. Much love from your fellow New Yorker!
Love that you mentioned Cooking Papa. It’s an underrated gem.
I been to 969 cafe many times , Oda is the most friendly guy around and his food is really really really good!

"I like work"
This is a very Japanese thing say and it's so nice to see people like what they do
Mike: rice sandwich
Me: THICC SUSHI
We stan Oda.
In all seriousness, though, I'd genuinely love to see him make his own cooking channel, or something. I'd watch tf out of that.
Beautiful as a Japanese garden. Thanks for the sandwich journey.
The owner is so cute "show me please"
I love that this is a two part episode, and this could have been a two episode series almost, but it was so touching the respect and time you gave to Mr. Oda. It warmed my heart
I'm already sad...this is the finale!? 😭 LOVED this series. 😍
He said season 1 in the video, didn't he?
Im. Hoping for a Reuben since it is such a great sandwich
@@chaosnightravngaming88 a Ruben would be great!!! But he already did pastrami so idk....
I recently discovered onigirazu and it has been an amazing replacement for my children's lunch at school. They are more open-minded about variety even if in reality is still just a sandwich but it's with rice and seaweed.
I love that you research the culture well! There is actually a traditional freez-dried tofu called Koya-dofu or Kori-dofu in Japan. I love them. Thanks for showing our food :)
I have to say that every single video without fail has inspired me to get up and cook good food. Even during my dark days. I look forward to watching, so afterwards I can make dank food! Thank you. Keep on keeping on my dude.
Was so excited to catch this episode - Oda gave me a heads up about you guys. Great job!
So u've been sneaking around behind aih 😁
The Japanese guy was really cute when he said "show me"!😄
Both of you guys passion for food makes me appreciate all food
Man this episode was awesome! Very well done, I love how you included the history of the "sandwich"
What a great series, Mike. You really took the quality to another level. Sad it's over but excited to see what you do next!
Love it! Keep doing what you do. I always loved to cook but your channel has made me take it to the next level. You guys are a real inspiration. Thank you so very, very much.
My inner otaku was so happy when a UA-cam chef admits defeat to a seasoned Japanese chef. Honest and humble. Love it!
Hello! Thanks so much for this series! I'm a chef and I'm also vegan but I've really appreciated seeing all the different techniques and history behind all these sandwiches, and although I don't eat meat, it's still so helpful to learn about all these different ways of cooking and apply them to other things I'm making, especially if I'm trying to replicate a meat flavour or texture. I've loved the effort you put into these videos and how they've evolved over time, it really shows your passion for food and cooking and your serious next-levels of cooking intuition and skill. It was awesome for me to see the series end on a vegan sandwich because it really reflects the increasing popularity of veganism and shows you're in touch with your viewers. Can't wait to see what you do next!
Also, having read some of the comments, you using the Premiere feature didn't bother me in slightest, in fact, it did get me excited that this video was coming out soon since I've loved this series. I didn't watch the video 'live' since it was at 2am UK time, but it was literally no inconvenience to me.

This was my favorite series this channel has produced yet 😍 excited to see what you do in the future. I really enjoy your attention to detail and making beautiful content as well as beautiful food ☺️
Thanks for the shout out to Mary. Seriously she's amazing.
Awe, Oda was adorable & this video was so well done! Looks so good 🤤
This series has been dope. I never saw this channel until you started this.
I'm vegan but I love watching your videos, especially the sandwich series, because I can always learn something new. I used that simmering broth with the 20 chinese spices to cook some home made seitan in and it turned out soooo delicious!
I really love your kitchen, its so comfie yet simple and stylish
Thoroughly enjoyed this episode and I learned a couple of new techniques. I must try the miso pickles and the tofu. I really hope there is another season, Mike.
Awesome video I have never heard of this. I loved this series a bunch. There's so much you can do with the premise its genius. Thanks for the vids
My favorite series on this channel. ❤️
Agree with the shiso in place of lettuce. Also, maybe soften the nori before trying to fold it? All in all a fantastic sandwich. I love the sandwich series. More please!!!
Discovered your channel recently and started of with mistakes people make with cooking and then your program on tips for cooking. Nowadays I'm hooked. I'm a beginner cook and love cooking for my friends. It's an amazing feeling to see people enjoy a meals I you cooked for them.
I love that you also give the vegan cuisine a chance :) more of it pleeeaseee!!!

I had to laugh, I did not expect Citrus to be there.
I can’t express my appreciation enough! This series is incredible. Your instructionals are so rewarding to watch. You are definitely one of the best food shows I’ve seen in my life.
four years later ... i must say i´m glad to find your chanel!!! From argentina thanking you sou much!
This looks so good and relatively simple. I have quite a few vegan friends and I feel like I've maxed out all my vegan recipes with them. I'll definitely be giving this a shot the next time they're over.
the better way to make the freezing tofu work even better is to open it, drain, freeze, unfreeze, drain (you can repeat that once again), pull into chunks AND THEN marinate it in veggie broth! He didn't do that but it makes the tofu soo much better. Then you can bread and fry :)
That looks amazing! I was impressed by those tofu nuggets too, I might have to actually attempt that. Thanks for another great video!
Thank you! This was very enjoyable to watch!
Loved this :) just catching the series now & this makes something from a restaurant seem actually attainable to make from home!
i really liked this episode. learned something new especially about the miso pickles
"A lot of ladies like it" hahaa! The chef is so humble!!!
Thank you!!! Thank you for introducing Onigirazu to world!
Thanks for sharing this video, great Japanese food inspiration here!
What a lovely and educational video this is. Thanks Mike!
Can't wait man. This is gonna be epic.
Shiso leaves instead of lettuce/or siding with the lettuce would've added an amazing flavor!
Please try it yourself with shiso leaves, or try ume onigiri with shiso leaves, truly a heavenly experience for the palate :)
Thank you! This is definitely first on my list for when my shiso comes up in the spring!
I have been binge watching Korean/Japanese/Vietnamese cooking videos for the past 6months I've watched every type of video you can imagine and I still to this day need more information and am just obsessed !! One too I saw this older woman doing is putting her pickled veggies in glass air tight mason jars and seeing them upside-down in the fridge or in a dark room.. I tried the fridge method and I can't lie I love it I live for anything pickled !
Hey Man ! I tried cooking this at Home and it was really Amazing. I had another ingrediens but i stayed on a vegan onigirazu. I also cooked tofu nuggets but not the same way and i wanted to share it because it was really Delicious !
So I had in mind those Japaneses marinate chicken nuggets that calls kara-age and I wanted to do the same with tofu. So broke my tofu in nuggets and put them in a bowl. Added some soy sauce, rice vinegar, some mirin , sesame oil, garlic and ginger. Let marinated that during few hours. Then I took the tofu out ouf the marinade added flour to the marinade . Pour the paste on the tofu pieces, add some extra flour and fried it !
You all really need to try this it was absolutely delicious !
I loved this series! Plus Oda really made me smile!
just bought square molds on amazon so I can load them easier and fold the seaweed better. excited to try and make!
The ingredients is easy to find, i'll try it
It looks so good! This series has been a lot of fun. I must remember to eat before watching though...
Japanese food is art, the flavor and taste is a bonus! I hope Oniguri become a health craze! Thank You for sharing this vlog!
Would love to see Pita Gyro in a future episode! Big fan of this series.
Think I'm gonna make this tomorrow. Looks good af

I've enjoyed this series so much! Was also really glad to see a vegan addition, I love how you guys show that its still possible to be a foodie whilst cooking with just plants. Cheers Mike!
Your show has gotten super good. Good info and execution. Keep em coming.

He seems so sweet aw bless him
great series, cant wait for 2nd!
I love this owner dude. His energy is beautiful
Looks delicious can’t wait to try it
Use apple cider vinegar when seasoning your sushi rice. It gives it a sweet, apple aroma along with a unique taste that just can't be compared to.
James White ooo great idea
