Fun fact: this is STILL the most expensive and largest stunt *in cinema history*. It cost $25 million to realise (slightly less than the entire production budget for Speed 1!). It required building the entire town as a set and then mounting a life size metal copy of the ship’s prow on underwater rails powered by four 15,000HP diesel engines and ramming it through the set one bit of destruction at a time. Every shot was the first and final take as it was too expensive to rebuild. I can’t help but feel a little sorry for all the money and human effort that went into such an endeavour only for the film to lose millions of dollars.
It would have been funny if after the scene was over, the cameraman yelled, "Oops. I forgot to put film in the camera." I thought I read that the mall scene from "The Blues Brothers" cost in the millions, even in 1978. Accounting for inflation, the cost of that scene would be up there, too.
@@michaeld6438yeah that's probably true unfortunately, I'm not saying that we shouldn't have good CGI in movies but I think it's becoming used way way too often. Pretty much everything from Disney (for example) is just full of CGI, like hardly having any practical effects just feels like these people don't really care about the movies they make. I mean....you can tell, when a filmmaker puts a hell of a lot of effort into making the scenes of the movie be as real as possible, it shows they really care about it. Like there are countless of really awesome practical effects that exist in some really great films and it just feels better to know that the filmmakers really tried super hard to make it good so they spend like 3 months meticulously putting together a scene that was only 5 minutes long. Like it's crazy, but also you know that they really are passionate about what they do. I think it's better personally but that's just me.
This movie was my childhood I remember watching this over and over and over again. It like it’s predecessor only got better and bigger throughout with the action.
The guy who just came out of 7-Eleven with a slurpee and the dog who survived the anchor drop on the car were my favorite characters. I wish they did more with them.
Fun fact: in the movie, right before impact, it's shown that the ship has a current speed of 7kts. That's just 13km/h or 8mph... So yeah... no chance for anyone to notice a 135m/440ft long ship heading towards the port...
This wonderful 3 bedroom 2 bath apartment will take you away from all busy life, with shopping centers just around the corner, docks less than a mile away and pool and spa, it's a lifetime of luxury. Ship is not included...
*Trivia Fact:* This scene was inspired by a recurring dream director Jan De Bont had that was just like here, and while there were two other script ideas for _Speed 2_ (both by Graham Yost, the first film's writer) - such as one about a Vietnam War era boat filled with explosives that'd ignite if in contact with the water, or one about a plane that couldn't fly above 10,000 feet over the Andes mountains - De Bont had turned them all down in favor of his idea from his recurring dream. So this whole film was written specifically to accommodate around this scene alone.
How exactly did you calculate that? I'm not saying you are right or wrong, but I'm just curious as to your assessment and does it go beyond: "because I said so"
That’s the reason why I feel bad for this movie and it’s productions, the sequel failed but in this scene they actually had work in it, I think the budget for this scene to make was about $25 million, yet the sequel doesn’t succeed, basically all the millions of dollars have been wasted and that’s what I feel sorry about, they used a real ship on real buildings but if this movie was made today, it all be just CGI.

Then I grew up and finally watched Speed 1 and I found it to be such a great action film that was so well done and acted. In comparison, Speed 2 is not the same type of film and I think thats why people didnt like it. The tone of the film is very different from the first one, and the lead actor in Speed 2 didnt put in the effort (he hated the film). On its own I think Speed 2 is a good film but because its a sequel to a great film, it just doesnt measure up

Pretty sure the only thing even close to this record was the prop replicas used in the Titanic movie. Coincidently that was also ship related.
Probably now a days they would just use a computer.

Luckily the dog is save .
I hope Jack has full coverage
He said "my cur" cause he was worried for the dog inside
It would be a good Geico commercial
I can’t be the only one who finds this whole scene hilarious to watch
Totally agree
Same here.
Because it tried to call itself a Speed movie without earning that right?
why ?

Best scene of the movie, I just really love watching a ship crash into a costal town and destroy and a ton of houses.
+TheADMAGIX ummm ok that was random but I have my own movie website that doesn't just have new and popular movies like other websites do.
It is the one very best scene in this entire movie, after an hour of build-up and action on a cruise ship, this scene was worth it all. *;D*
I just bought a condo here man. - Speed 2

If Keanu was in the movie he'd have cared about the dog.
Because you can buy hundreds of dogs in that car's price
It _was_ John Wick's dog...
What do you expect? He was Jack from Billy Madison, after all.
Something so satisfying about seeing this much destruction

Well, it's a disaster movie, and it delivered exactly what it promised. I'm amazed the ship got as far as it did before it came to a halt.
I love the scene how ship comes to halt after hitting the bell. Wonderful direction.

Literally no possible way a ship moving at what, 30 knots, could rip that far into a pier.
