This video took almost a month to edit/script/research haha. Hope you guys enjoy, and please consider subscribing ♥ (also i know fortnite is a third person game ok I FUMBLED AND SAID THE WRONG THING 😭)
honestly i have the feeling that the folks developing hytale are actually trying to counter minecraft in its CURRENT state so they are always behind minecraft in features.
I'm just going to mention that decent games take around 3-5 Years to develop, this is the only game I actually have hope for, compared to the gaming industry now where games are getting pumped out, unfinished, with glitches, errors, missing features, not to mention filled to the brim with tones of paid DLC and essentially loot boxes. In other words, the longer we wait the better. "This game needs to be perfect" is the kind of standard gaming companies need to adopt. Trust the process!
It was announced 5 years ago, and 5 years in we get once a year Dev updates that are filled with mostly fan art - there’s no proof it’s any different from the thousands of other kickstarter game scams
@@SierraMysteria There is a huge difference between a group of random people with no experience jumping in the gaming scene to make a quick scam & the fact this is a team of highly dedicated people who have not only partnered with riot games but have also run one of the most successful Minecraft servers of all time. Edit: Not to mention if it was a "scam" they would have been asking people for money from day one, it's actually kind of crazy you think this is a scam not going to lie, if the project fails that's one thing, but to compare it to a Kickstarter scam is outrageous 😂
Definitely agree with this. Good games take a long time to make, especially given its scope, and with a relatively small teaming working (hopefully) acceptable hours, you can begin to see why its taking so long. Lack of updates =/= lack of progress. We just have to be patient and see what comes of it. (Although I don't agree with the 'gaming industry' part, I think there are very much still great games being made and released, if not even moreso than ever)
The addition of Riot Games will hopefully aid Hytale. With the oversight of experienced developers, Hytale's development could be steered in the right direction if it goes off course. The acquisition by Riot Games means that they can reconsider the scope of the game and have extra to time on parts that they think deserve more attention
I agree with most other comments, I'm a game developer myself and Hytale's story doesn't sound like a scam or lie, but the reality behind making a complex game, it's just very hard. What I suspect might have happened is that before they joined hands with Riot Games, they had a limit to their budget which forced their hands at pushing the game out before that happened, hence the early release date and the big hype generating announcements. However, it likely all changed once the financial pressure was removed, or at least very lightened, with the support of such a massive company. Creative people like making stuff, and so with the time they now had, they saw bigger, they saw the potential with the hype around the initial trailer, and wanted to make their dream without compromising for the sake of getting money earlier. What follows also makes perfect sense, as the roadmap gets longer and more stuff needs to be redone before getting back to being close to a finished game, any studio would naturally dial down the public announcements. One reason is because the design is still evolving, and while sharing the thought process worked for some games, it's usually better to refrain from announcing ideas and concepts that might completely change or even be removed in the coming months. The other reason is that generating hype years before releasing a game is a terrible idea, it's not only difficult to maintain for the developers, but also tiring as a potential player to keep getting teased over such a long period. As you pointed out, they said they realized a releasable version would still take years to make, so naturally they are refraining from hyping people up before they are fairly certain the game is getting ready. If you look at AAA games this becomes even more obvious, such massive games are never announced more than a year before release, before that it's all secretive, but most of the big games nowadays take MANY years of development, when you hear about the latest AAA game, it's actually been designed 10 years before, prototyping had been done 8 years before, and development had been going on for 7 years. All that to say that, yeah, maybe Hytale will never see the storefront, maybe it'll flop as it missed a golden opportunity, but I think this isn't anything out of the ordinary. I believe Hytale still has a good chance of becoming something great. What's for sure is that they're not going to flood the net with news when they don't know when the game will be ready.
Yeah this is exactly what happened. The realized with the amount of attention they got, they could even bigger and flesh it out as much as possible and realize the full dream, and putting it on everything. They even entirely redid the engine and everything we have seen so far has typically been in the old one. They are currently redoing th whole game in the new engine, porting assets, redoing mechanics and big testing. Up until recently they weren't even full In the new engine, they were still doing features in the old one to test things out. Now the games essentially going full steam ahead in the new one
I mean, riot pumped out games within 3-4 year. If hytale, under riots paycheck, cant pump out a game in 8 years, I don't think its happening. Also More games have come out, on top of mincrafts modding scene being so much better, I doubtl hytale if it comes out will promote the same hype
Rewriting the game to C++ makes absolute sense since Riot is on their side and the money is basically not a problem anymore. Think about it, you don't wanna have split communities like with Java and the crossplay potential is absolutely huge. Riot will do absolutely everything to have a Minecraft competitor, even when it takes another 5 years to develop.
Riot having a competitor to Mojang and Microsoft is absolutely a massive thing. They're definitely going to go full tilt into the quality assurance, that's for sure. Mojang and Microsoft has had a lot of controversial stuff going on with their EULA updates and the mob votes. Minecraft is just... a very old game with a lot of stubborn people on all sides of the board. I think Hytale is the best thing to happen for everyone.
@@mdbgamer556 I don't think Hytale will have the same level of modding community to keep the game alive. There's a bit too much polish and style. It's not as much of a blank canvas as Minecraft.
Hytale is a name that I pops back into my mental consciousness every other week. For a game that has largely fallen into radio silence in terms of updates, it’s impressive. When I saw that they’d essentially be recoding their game in order to make it fully cross playable, I understood that this wouldn’t be a minor delay. Any significant updates would be rehashing of previously known content or minor differences here or there.
Yeah the games just now finally picking up again, since they finally are all converted to the new engine. And are essentially finally rebuilding the game. They were still using the old one to try features out.
As someone that's doing some gamedev myself, I think what happened is Riot picked up the Hytale team, and one thing Riot NEVER does is half ass anything on release. Ghostcrawler, the ex creative director on Riot's mmo game project said that riot would basically throw any amount of money and time at the team if it meant they would release a finished game in a good state. This means that Riot basically only releases games when they are content complete and polished to a shine. The problem for a smaller team like Hypixel is that a small team would have a really hard time making a game of this scale, then polishing all their assets and features and reworking things to work with the much bigger budget they now have under Riot.
I sure loved ADC patch. I sure love Phreak still receiving a 2m USD salary for no reason. I love Riot Games being full of incel devs. I love how Riot August boars about Qiyana's feet on his twitter. I love how they used Mob tactics to take down a legal League project from fans for no reason.
You don't switch from Java to C++ just to get the game to "perform slightly better". You do it to get exponentially better performance, more control over every facet of the game and to release it to a bigger amount of platforms.
For real Java sucks ass, people showed already that C++ coded minecraft would be able to handle thousands on modded servers instead of the current servers that struggle with a hundred on vanilla.
@@SleepyStreak Java is hardly to blame for that. Sure C++ could likely make it faster but look at the buggy mess that is bedrock (which is written in C++)... I'm by no means a java simp but calling it bad is far from the truth. At least performance wise.
@@DJTimeLock Are you actually serious? Name a game after 2012 that's been made in Java. It's not used for game development for a reason, it's poorly optimized for it.
@@DJTimeLock Java is legitimately the crutch for Java MC. There is a major reason all other releases are in C++. Desktop Java is just more of a slog for performance.
Hytale is something I want to be released in a relatively good state where I can actually stand on like a mountain, look at my surroundings, and realize I am playing a finished game. Like a breath of fresh air
What would play into their favor, is if the game is in fact fully finished and polished on release. A lot of people are losing faith in big name titles because we've been consistently getting so many buggy, unfinished, undercooked messes lately, so if they manage to actually reach the finish line, Hytale could potentially explode in the market.
Rewriting a game from one programming language to another is no joke in the slightest. I'm willing to wait for this game to come out as this game will have much better modding capabilities to allow for easier code implementation.
@@marcusg6573 The game will literally have live scripting. Minecraft is a mess to mod. It's actually easier to mod using C++ if the game supports the bindings to whateve scripting language they choose, or even better if the live scripting is literally integrated in the game. Hytale will just be better than MC on this regard, by far.
I do think that Hytale will not have to worry about advertising to a new audience, especially with Riot being their parent company. It is just another case of development hell in the industry, one that has a lot of potential and may be the next fortnite for minecraft.
They will no doubt ramp up advertising closer to release. But if they start while they're unsure about release or far out, then it's bound to get people mad, just like it did the first time
@@Sedero The thing is the game would probably have been out by now if Riot dodn't aquire the studio/supported the project (don't remember which is true). Riot saw potential in the game and wanted to make it BIG. That is why it takes a long time, riot isn't afraid of taking time to make something that will last for a decade. Just look at the Riot MMO in the works.
As much as I'm frustrated with their lack of communication, I'm honestly happy that they're taking their time with this. Usually when you hear about these kinds of delays, it's bad, but that's due to it being in development hell. From what we've heard, it appears to just be genuine development taking longer than what inexperienced developers expected.
Plus adding to the hype train generally never goes well for indie development - just look at No Mans Sky for where a game increased expectations massively and under-delivered on release
Yep, like a wise man said, "A delayed game is eventually good, a rushed game is forever bad" and you can look at two of the most hyped releases of the last decade as an example, No man's sky & Cyberpunk 2077; they both released in a pretty bad state, and even if today they are really good games, you still have people who don't want to touch them because of their state of release.
@@webaazul2500 Dude, Cyberpunk was delayed like 12 times. It was in development for 9 years. They delayed it so many times that the higher ups were sick of it, and wanted the game to be released.
I'm a developer and games do take a huge amount of time, especially this big. It does seem a bit suspicious that there isn't a lot of visible development, but can't be sure to say anything yet. Minecraft itself was built upon years and years of content that kept getting added over time tho. Due to this cycle allowing them to have more updates frequently and not just do everything in one go, they are a very successful game that doesn't go out of time. Hytale on the other hand, if they want to be a "better Minecraft", they need to take ALL of Minecrafts content into consideration and do something with it before releasing the game in its entirety. That is about 12-14 years worth of development that they're trying to improve. And for every year Minecraft releases new content, it sets them forward by 1 more year in development. I could see the want to make a second Minecraft, but while Mojang keeps updating theirs, this is going to be a near impossible task
@@nardalis4832 Agreed. I personally don't think Hytale should be trying to achieve being a "better minecraft", though I feel like with the direction Mojang is currently going, I'll probably be jumping ship to Hytale when/if it releases, even if it doesn't feel too similar. I genuinely think Hytale should just try to be its own game. They seem to be doing pretty good at that to be honest, considering the NPCs and story they seem to be adding.
You are not clickbaited check the last post in their blog , the game you saw in the trailer does not exist , it became a low poly shitty furry game that is owned by Riot games , a company that picks a popular game and re-releases a version made for npc people , fucking soulless company
Yeah this video kinda sucks ass honestly. 0 new info in here, and heavily downplaying how hard it is to make a good game. "My friends who I was gonna play Hytale with grew up and got jobs"... Like, ok? Weird complaint honestly. Good games take a long ass time to make, especially if it's a new team and they wanna do it right. I'm not saying the game's gonna be good, for all we know it won't ever come out that's true, but I'd rather they take their time than just release a quick cash grab. The fact that they DIDNT do that, bodes well I'd say.
Agreed, frustrated by the thumbnail. They didn't lie, they delayed. At the moment the newest info is that it's still being worked on, so what.. They "lied" about the release date? I thought this video was them announcing they stopped development, or lied about progress, or ANY NUMBER of the many interpretations. Not that they missed projected deadlines which everyone already knows.
The way people talk about this game is really obnoxious and entitled. It's always the same rhetoric about how they 'announced it too early' and then they turn and say that they should keep releasing content and not let the hype die. Why should they be holding a consistent level of hype when its clearly still deep in production? People seem to think that they owe it to the Minecraft community or something. It's not a Minecraft update. People act like they have a stake in its production, like they backed a Kickstarter or something. It's unfinished. You can't just rush it. I can't imagine how annoying it is for developers to see the discourse surrounding it online.
@@flow185 Yeah, maybe leading up to release. People who were excited when the first trailer came out will be excited again when a release date is put on the game. Until the game is ready to be shown, I dont see why we should expect anything major out of them
@@BitzelBlockington "Yeah, maybe leading up to release. People who were excited when the first trailer came out will be excited again when a release date is put on the game." Will they? i didn't know you could predict the future or something, because i was excited back then and i definetly will not care once it finally releases.
@@gabrielfmm It's not an unreasonable assumption. I agree, I don't speak for everyone. Neither do you. But you're here, seemingly at least a little bothered by the fact that you can't play it yet. But what do I know? Bottom line is the game looks fucking awesome, and it will look even more fucking awesome when they decide it's ready. People will respond to that. New audiences and those who were waiting since day one. Until then, what is your actionable solution for their marketing strategy? Besides "they should have done ___," or "I want it now!"
My own interpretation of what happened was, a small independent team set out to make a better version of a game they love. They released a trailer to hopefully get a small following of support and the plan was to release a game for that small audience but build the project and make it better overtime with the incrementally increasing level of polish attracting more players and growing the fanbase. Their first trailer got way more attention and feedback than they thought and since they didn't want to risk releasing a subpar product that would improve overtime destroying their reputation right out the gate, they delayed the game. It's very common for small studios to cut back features that just aren't attainable within a reasonable timeline and setting more realistic goals but after getting bought out by Riot, those limitations are no longer there. So now they get to make the exact game that they want, they need to make sure its not lacking anywhere, and that takes time. Riot also has a policy of "throw money at it till its good" since they also have a reputation to uphold. I have complete faith in the game and am very willing to wait for it to be "perfect".
The problem is basically the massive expectations. I know Half Life 3 is more of a meme than anything, but if it ever comes out, it will be vastly below expectations. Simply because the expectations are so incredibly high at this point. It would've been better if they kept Hytale a secret until they have something to show. With every year that passes expectations will grow. Because every year, every month that passes is time they can use to make the game better. I know that development cycles for games are multiple years, but usually you see the first trailer, the first preview somewhat close to release. At this point it's basically like any kickstarter project, just without relying on crowdfunding. We have a very early draft of what the game is supposed to be, but we don't know how much of that exists so far. I'm not trying to bash the project, but just try to be realistic. And turning what is basically a mod server into it's own standalone game, just look at GMod Tower and Tower Unite. I can already tell that by the time it releases, Hytale won't be "the perfect game", it surely will be good, but not as good as people hoped. There is just too much time between the reveal and release. People will make up features that "surely are included", only to be disappointed if they aren't.
Far from a "small independent team". The studio is/was run by hypixel which is the biggest minecraft server that easily makes millions every year, so I have to say your hypothesis is far from real.
@@HappyBeezerStudios to be fair they made half life alyx which was very well received so i dont think people have unrealistic expectations of what hl3 would be
@@haruhirogrimgar6047 yeah but valve only releases games when they are done, it wouldnt make sense for them to not release hl3 with the same or even better quality, they proved they can do it with alyx also the fact that half life alyx remains the best even after years says a lot about the other developers at this point rather than valve
You just unlocked a deep memory in me…. I completely forgot about this game. I know for sure riot wants to take its time as it does with everything else.
considering their track record, i have faith in riot to make a good and long-lasting game. they are already forcing valve to make csgo better so hopefully the same will happen with minecraft once hytale is out.
A ton of people played Hytale, back in Minecon 2016 the dev team brought early copies and showed them to multiple content creators, ElRichMC, a spanish content creator, mentioned playing it in like Noxy's hotel room. The most basic explanation of what happened to it is that they were planning to release an indie game in early access, and now they plan on releasing a full almost AAA game, that's where the timespan comes in
a fully polished game doesn't have much staying power with the wider public. it always relegates itself to a niche community. A game that constantly gains updates grows.
@@TheJaguarthChannel what? I never said there would be no updates i just said the game wouldnt play like an early access indie title on release lol, of course there will be free updates the game will die instantly if it doesnt
@@TheJaguarthChannelA non-polished game on release has even less staying power. It will gain quick traction and then die off due to the lack of polish and content. A game can be fully polished and continue to introduce contents as time goes on. It isn't mutually exclusive and especially for an open world, there is so much more to add later on.
@@ultratronger well, I didn't claim that you did say that, it was a remark, not an accusation.... Why are people online so touchy and defensive acting like everything is a personal attack?
Assuming that the devs got a massive funding boost when Riot bought them and maybe even additional input and ressources, it's realistic that they decided to take a few steps back and went for a more ambitious approach. I agree that they need to communicate more and show us what acutal progress is being made, but I don't think this game is dead at cancelled at all. With the amount of games releasing in a briken, unfinished state, I'm fine with big projects taking the time they need.
They wont. Not with how Riot handles their IP's. Riot always keeps their projects in near complete silence outside of letting people on the odd occassion that something is in the works. This allows them to take their time with developing their games to the quality they want them to have and when they do drop them out of the blue, the hype generated is not only massive but rides for a long time because people arent in a limbo waiting room.
@@sloth3948 My brother in Christ, the phrase is “Now more than ever.” They wrote the phrase wrong. This has nothing to do with Minecraft. My life doesn’t revolve around that game like yours does.
Let them take their time, riots influence, a incredibly dedicated team that definitely loves the game they are making. They are what we need to have faith in especially in the modern gaming economy
they had enough time to wake up, they are not gonna get better, they tried to migrate into different games, dungeons etc and thos games died in like 2 days of coming out, they are on life line right now, i can see them filing a lawsuit at hytale for stealing the concept of the game, 13 year old modders are singlehandedly creating 10 times the content in 1 week, once they lose all the modders migrating to hytale for better mod support they are done@@BuzzingMeat
I think for sandbox games its not as important to be polished and fully finished because its content can be split apart between updates like early access approach. You don't need to release full story line or finished open world because its procedurally generated
I really hope that the same situation that happened to BATDR will happen to Hytale. The game was announced a while ago and really hyped but after that the development team went silent for quite a long time. At the end, the game suddenly got released and turned out to be very good
When Riot Games bought the studio they started rewriting the code from 0 using C++ instead of C# for the game and Java for server stuff Soo we should get better performance and better game overall
While I do understand your point, I have to also raise the existence of Hollow knight (Silksong is an even greater example, but the original delay of Hollowknight and it being released works better). Games don't need to be advertised much before they're released- that's how you get things like Fallout 76 and Cyberpunk 2077. The more they tell people about the process the more energy they put into that instead of fixing and refining features they planned. Compared to the 'transparency' of Mojang in recent years and the debacle that is today's Mob vote I don't think them telling players about scrapped ideas is a good idea- just look at the issues of 'Marble Machine X' from Wintergatan, where millions of people flipped out when the machine couldn't be finished practically and he moved onto a new machine entirely. Trying to clickbait people with a title like yours is a massive issue- the video itself was good though. But a large portion of people will note the title but not watch the video, or not watch the entire thing and come away with the initial message. Please don't make people pressure Hytale's team to reveal more about the things they are working on by making them afraid that Hytale won't be released. Instead, push for raising people's curiosity with a title like 'What happened to Hytale?'. I don't think you did this on purpose (maybe just the clickbaiting, not the fearmongering), but please don't end up making another tragedy from making people scared of a possibility. As a side note, just because people get older doesn't mean the game won't have an audience. There are people who still play on the Hypixel server (about 60,000 per day, source is this website: hypixel.krashnz.com/), and as your (and my own) generation age out of these games and into adulthood there are younger children being exposed to the world of Minecraft and Hypixel. Hytale and Minecraft might have similar audiences, but Hytale would probably be catered toward a slightly older and adventurous audience. Think Terraria compared to Minecraft- both good games with surface level similarities, but with vastly different playstyles. Hopefully the wall of text didn't scare you off, but I don't want your effort in this video to be wasted! The editing was great and you seem to have done a ton of research, I just think you missed to mark on the Title/thumbnail. Have a good one, and I'm looking forward to your future content!
Yeah let's not pressure game devs into releasing games early because the game could be completely broken in the current state it is in and if released cause a horrible launch and basically cause immense damage to both the companies reputation and the game won't have as big of a playerbase as it did on launch
you are fundamentally misunderstanding the problem with the launch of Fallout 76 and Cyberpunk 2077 it literally have nothing to do with advertisment for the game. its literally just extended development cycle => impatient shareholder pressure the release to protect their investment. the longer the development cycle, the more money the investors have to pump into the project, and the more risky it become. and what do corporate suits hate the most ? risk, thats all there is. just look at Overwatch 2 PvE, spent 6 years making the PvE only to cancel it last minute, because Microsoft bought them whole and there will be a restructure, which mean chacnes are the current shareholders and boardmembers arent gonna be the one to reap the payout from the OW2 PvE, thats why they stop funding it and eventually it get canceled.
@@mop-kun2381 That’s where I have to disagree. The goal of pushing out updates and promoting their products forced the companies to stick with a hard and fast deadline that they put out too early in development, eventually leading to horrible crunch time for their employees and an unfinished product on launch. It’s all to do with advertisement, and little to do with risk- especially with smaller teams like the one working in Hytale or Silksong. Small teams means an infinitely smaller budget than those of AAA games, and when it comes down to it they can afford to spend years refining a game into a passion project instead of a stock-booster. Hopefully that makes sense, and though I do have to agree that large companies (like with Overwatch 2) have their own issues, I just had to clarify that small teams don’t struggle with the same issues they would
I also think a reason for needing the game to be perfect is, judging from how you described the game at the start, it seems to be a direct Minecraft competitor. That might've been a semi-reasonable goal if Minecraft was failing, like it was in 2018, but as Minecraft made it's comeback, Hytale needed to massively up it's game if it wished to be the more relevant of the two. it is not a sleeping giant Hytale needs to defeat, it's an awake and aware giant
This is the problem people expect it to slay Minecraft if that’s what people expect then get ready for a Starbound situation. Starbound was literally advertised as the better bigger Terraria then it fumbled hard cuz it couldn’t keep up with the already existing and established elements terraria had over it. They eventually tried to make it more story driven then that failed too because the creator gave up on the game and quit. I hope hytale doesn’t go this route it always ends this way other examples being cube world, smash bros clones, and the many fortnite clones.
Mojang are really like a half-awake giant who wants to sleep all day haha I guess they are going to wake up when they see that a game that they didn't know about anymore and just came out, is taking away their relevance and Microsoft asks about the drop in revenue.
I remember when the trailer actually came out and it was exactly that: Minecraft was failing. Big servers closed, even Hypixel didnt hit its caps anymore. Everyone wanted a Hytale to bring a huge expansion to the Block Building-Genre. Of course they couldnt release in 2019 yet, and 2020 came the pandemic with an insane increase in Minecraft playercounts. Mojang is actually dropping decently sized expansions nowadays. Its gonna be hard for Hytale to live up to its promises
This is missing the community inside perspective. Noxy and the team are actually kind of active in the community, such as participating in the fan Christmas events and donating thousands to the fundraisers, to sending custom postcards to creators and even some physical goodies. They tease massive amounts of game from the postcards alone. I’d watch some Kweebec Corner for more info if I were you, as he’s been very vigilant with documenting everything. They even hang up all of the fanart in their office, and joked about running out of wall space. It’s not a massive outreach, it’s a heartfelt genuine outreach to those that stuck around. This video would be greatly enriched by added perspective.
Exactly right. They may be transitioning to an AAA videogame model (in terms of development and marketing via Riot's backing), but they're not forgetting their roots and are sincerely considerate of the fans that initially elevated them.
I know what development hell looks like, I've been there with a lot of passion projects myself. I think it's important to be patient with these types of games. I keep seeing so many hot takes of people claiming a game is dead because it isn't finished within 6 months or a year which is baffling. This stuff takes time, and I can't imagine the pressure the devs have on the expectations they've created from that trailer. they're might not be a lot of people looking at the game now, but when or if the game releases, it will have an audience that will critique with either flowers or pitchforks and fire.
I mean, I could understand a 1 year delay, maybe even a 2 year delay. But over 3 years? Come on, how could they not see it wouldn't be ready back then?

They changed their entire plan when they realized that they could actually do the big things they’d been hoping to do, which is why it went from being set to release in 2019 to an indefinite future release date
Look I’m not gonna defend Minecraft’s laziness but no way do you think any game will top Minecraft 😂 Minecraft has left a cultural legacy that will ensure it doesn’t fizzle out 10-20 years top Do not overhype Hytale. Rate it as it is upon release and make sure the developers get the proper support they get without the shadow of Minecraft constantly looming over them
I mean Vintage Story is great (and has been out for years and under constant development), Minetest has a small but growing community, and @finalforeach is making an entire Minecraft remake. There are definitely options, you just have to be open minded and look beyond the hype of Hytale.
Was thinking the exact same thing. Those clips of Hytale PvP looks so insanely cool meanwhile in Minecraft we're just gonna get some half baked PvE "challenge" that will probably take people all of 5 minutes to figure out how to cheese. How about reworking the horrible combat system that you needlessly implemented 7 years ago? If at some point you truly want full parity between Java and Bedrock, that includes combat mechanics too yknow 🤦♂
As an indie developer, it bugs me to no end when people refer to games that take a longer time than expected to release as a "lie." If you've never tried to make a game yourself, you need to understand that it takes a ridiculous amount of effort and time. You say that people expected it a short time after the trailer, but from what I can tell, **absolutely nowhere** was that ever promised, or even hinted at - it was a blind, baseless assumption by the community, and anyone believing it has only themselves to blame for their frustration about it being untrue. It's possible they dropped their trailer a bit earlier than they should have, but it appears they've also simply been on a bit of a roundabout journey with this due to the Riot acquisition, which adds more time to an already lengthy process. I hope we one day manage to eliminate the kind of ignorance among customers that leads to these kinds of attitudes.
This is a tears of the kingdom situation, Nintendo, one of the biggest game companies out there, required a 5-year delay before the game was released, so it is very unrealistic that the hypixel guys would be able to make such a perfect game in only a few years after it's announcement.
A more extreme example is pikmin 4, it was announced that it was almost done in 2015 but released in 2023, a 10 year difference from another mainline game
I worked at Hytale on entity AI 5-6 years ago now (2017-2018), and at the time the game was in a great state. I left the company after about a year, and how the game hasn’t been released since then still baffles me to this day. At this point I’m worried they missed their mark and when it releases it won’t have nearly as much hype as it would have years ago. It’s a shame. The developers I worked with when I was there were some of the smartest people I worked with to this day. I can only imagine they’re just as frustrated in the lack of release. The game truly was as well-developed and creative as advertised.
I'm glad you're no longer on the team, you would've brought down the team morale with the garbage you spew out your mouth. I find it crazy that you never actually took the time to see what is actually going on in development but decided to type something that is 5 years out of date. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I don't mind Hytale being released in 2026 or even 2027 if it's necessary, now that Riot has put hands into it I completely trust it can be a perfect and succesful games, I've always trusted Hypixel teams, but Rito teams are even greater than theirs.

Hytale fans: oh boy can't wait for this game to release in the next ten years! Me and my boys chilling in the Ark from SA2, overlooking Bowsers Castle: Are you sure about that?
It’s kinda simple what happened, they were using an engine that interfaces with the graphics pipeline in C# and probably hit a wall in terms of optimization and render capabilities since voxels require a unique render pipeline to look good and perform well. As a result Riot wanted to start from scratch in c++ for multiplatform capability, ownership of their own libraries and data structures, and most importantly optimization. The problem was they made this decision WAY TOO late. I believe the game will probably come out in a good state but much later because of this massive switch since the original team were probably all C# developers and finding new talent for such a massive project in a short period is insanely difficult.
I agree with your points, only one errata and that is that they didn’t use Unity; they used a custom built engine, and IIRC for the current engine in C++ they’ve taken help from The Forge.
Keep in mind, they didn't know they'd be funded by Riot then. lol. The scope was much smaller back then. Once they get the funds and devs, it's not that big a deal.
I have hopes that this game will make it and have it’s own number of communities that will sustain the game. Just like Minecraft. Even if takes a decade to make.
this was genuinly the biggest disappointment I've ever experience with game announcements. I firmly believe what we all watched in 2018 was not a prototype for a game, but a cleverly edited animation of a game concept. Only good thing that came of this is Minecraft got so much better in the years since this trailer dropped. I have no doubt this game's announcement set a fire under mojang. it would have blown minecraft in 2018 outta the water. Minecraft has come so far since then, that there is no way this game can compete as easily at they could have in 2018.
Minecraft and Hytale aren't comparable. It wasn't meant to be a Minecraft 2.0 you don't seems to have follow Hytale and it's devlopment. And what is the disappointment??? It is just not finish yet

I think if does come out it’ll be a success as long as the project isn’t in development purgatory and is actually making progress. It’s seems like a passion project from a smaller developer which is a trend recently and I could easily imagine it’s release being similar to palworld
Great video! As somebody who is a part of the community and knows some of the devs I think I can add a little more context here The original Hytale team was about 40 people back in 2018 when the game was announced and as we speak there are more than 130 devs working on the game. Many of these devs were top devs at Riot, Epic, ETC. The current game director used to work for Mojang! The team is actually pretty active with the active community on Twitter and Discord which after the delay got pretty small, it's actually pretty cool this many people remember the game 😃. The game director announced a new blogpost would be coming with some pretty substantial developments as the hytale team just had to recode the engine to make sure the tech wasn't super outdated and there wouldn't have to multiple games for different platforms. This used to be an indie game. With riot in the picture. No longer. Riot is actually very involved and supportive of the Hypixel team as they continue to fund. This game is probably now over 100mil in the making. Because of this Riot wants the game to be polished and ready before they give the green light to launch! Just some extra info that might be helpful!
I remember the trailer coming out in 2018. I was super excited. “The successor to Minecraft” I shouted, the video released an hour ago. So what’s happened. I think about every few days. That’s feeling. Was amazing
Guys chill out, "I used to be very excited for this huge indie project that is meant to compete with literally the beat selling game ever, but when I learned it was going to take time that killed the hype for me" What is wrong with you people
@@Delfi1 Even if it did come out in 2027, if there were no other real Minecraft competitors to come out before then, better late than never. The current modding community for Minecraft is so amazing and you can do so many things, and Minecraft isn't even built for modding. Imagine a Minecraft built from the ground up with modding in mind right out the gate, filled with content, backed by the most popular Minecraft server ever, again, I don't care if it comes out in 2027. With how slowly updates have been coming out for Minecraft, Minecraft won't even look that different in 2027 anyway, aside from a few new useless mobs, a few surface level updates to biomes, a few useless structures, who cares.
Kinda reminds me of what happened with Star Citizen, where you also have a really passionate team with a great idea that becomes massively popular, resulting in the dev team having to meet really high expectations and getting way more money for the project than they ever expected to get. And as a result they keep adding new features and ideas to their game and reworking things so that they can make the biggest, most complex and most flawless game ever. But really the result is just that the game has been delayed indefinitely* and is stuck in development hell because they just keep working and working on it until it is 'perfect'. *Well, there is a buggy alpha release out for the game that you can play right now, but it is pretty far from the finished game still.
Regarding news about hytale, it's actually been looking really good recently with frequent tweets from the developers about the game. The reason that hypixel hasn't advertised much over the last few years is because they have no reason to until they ultimately have a plan on actually releasing it.
They should have just released it after the first trailer, and done what mojang did- release monthly updates or yearly updates. Everybody has already forgot about the game, they missed their chance
Well if they did what you wanted they would have released garbage, they’re taking their time, something many devs don’t do plus with the engine rewrite, they’re basically restarting
When it does release it will probably have more hype than when it was announced. Hypixel has riot games behind them, they know what they are doing. Also riot has actual geniuses behind their marketing team, and your point of people forgetting about the game, every blog post has people remembering it, and if people forgot about it and never heard abt it again well, a new trailer will probably surpass the hype of the first one.
@@the_otamatone Half baked minecraft clones get a hundred million downloads on the Android Playstore just because they're free. Hytale will be free, but will also have free mods, maps, texture packs, shaderpacks, and most importantly won't have the bedrock marketplace. So by default it will beat minecraft on playstore by virtue of being free, just like the minecraft clones. The same case will happen for console, free maps free everything, it will be an instant success just because bedrock edition has everything locked behind a virtual paywall. This is likely why Hytale started developing for all platforms and not just PC since late 2021. Because when faced against bedrock, forget about storyline, exploration, graphics, or sideways slabs. All you need to compete against bedrock is to not have the marketplace paywall. Well they went even further and just made a better game, then they made it free, so in my opinion it would be quite the challenge to not overtake at least Minecraft Bedrock.
@@the_otamatone The only reason why they have to do an engine rewrite is because they didn't release the game back when they should have. Now it would have already amassed a loyal community and the overhaul cost would not be justifiable.
I remember the hytale hype. I wish they released it when expected but I am kinda glad they're perfecting everything, though, haha. I was shocked when i logged into hypixel the other day and the hytale trailer thing was still in the lobby, haha.
Yeah we all want the game we are hyped for to come out as soon as possible. But it is best we let it cook and come out polished rather than buggy and unfinished.
A much, much better, more transparent, less clickbaity name for this video would've been "why hytale isn't out." as it is now, the title is insincere at best. Hytale does exist, it's actively being worked on, it just isn't out.
I had no idea they were purchased by Riot. Hope restored. Riot may have some questionable practices within their games but they are obsessed with making sure every game under their name is as perfect and polished as they can be, with money being no issue to them. Hypixel caught a massive break catching Riot's interest.
Yea I don't think anyone who played league of legends will agree that riot is obsessed with making sure every game under their name is as perfect and polished as they can be
@@arqiu7632 Riot needs to keep the game alive. They keep adding and changing stuff to keep people engaged, and since the game is already live they can't postpone updates as they would the release of a game in development. But overall if you look at the state of league now compared with what the balance was when it was released it is a world of difference. Nowadays sth is considered turbo broken with a 55% winrate, and useless at 45. There were times when skarner had a 70% winrate and Syndra 25% lmao. I just want a competitor to Minecraft so Mojang steps on the gas pedal for once. I personally believe that once Hytale becomes popular, we are going to experience the best Minecraft updates ever.
A friend and I were introduced to this game in high school. Since then we have grown up. I told my friend that Hytale still hasn't released yet, and his response was "wow, I completely forgot that game existed!" Although adulting is more involved than being a high school kid, I am almost certain me and my friend could very well find a few moments to play it.
Honestly they can take their time, it's hard to make a masterpiece but it seems they want to make something super close to a masterpiece, and I congratulate them
Let's hope they deliver. Because a hyped game with a big premise that turns out to be a disappointment wouldn't be the first time. They have a reputation to hold up to, so lets hope they get out a game that turns out great.
This whole video reminds of a quote I once heard, appiicable to any form of art but especially to video games : a game is never finished, it is released.
It shows that they truly care and want to make a great product not make a great profit. I don't want another rushed game like Overwatch 2, I think its great they are taking their time as long as it lives up to the expectations.
I forgot about Hytale because I suspected they wouldn't release any time soon. The reason I liked the idea of hytale was because of it's open-community nature (closed-source client, open-source server), and I'll wait however long for that. However, the acquisition by Riot games has worried me a little that the client may contain poorly implemented anti-cheat mechanisms, contain spyware, and not be supported on Linux. Since then, I've found Vintage Story as a nice in-between game with a similar mentality, though it doesn't have nearly the community backing Minecraft does, and it's simply too slow of a game to appeal to most people wanting to hop on for an hour or so (something I want to fix with a mod I want to make when 1.19 comes out).
8:28 Hytale hasnt done much advertising recently, _and thats a good thing._ At this point, Hytale is likely still _years_ away from actually releasing, even if they where to rush it. Games take a lot of time to make, especially ones as big as hytale. Right now would probably be the worst possible time to advertise the game. They _could_ spend a bunch of money advertising it but, why? So that the interest dies down again in about 2 months, wasting their money? So that they build even more hype and create even bigger unrealistic expectations for the game? None of that would benefit them. Right now its simply better to focus on just making the game. Once they're far enough in development to actually be able to set a concrete release date is when it would make sense to launch an advertising campaign or focus more on pr. Having them rush the game or spend a bunch of money on advertising just to build hype for a product still _years_ away from even having a release date is a bad idea. I'd rather have an elden ring than a duke nukem forever.
Rockstar is a massive titan in the industry with cash for days, the devs behind Hytale are a small studio aiming to make something awesome and were fishing for investors. This trailer was not meant for you it was meant for publishing companies (and they ended up getting that investment from Riot and Tencent ^^ who gave them money and hands off dev time) Be patient and dont mix apples with oranges. When its ready it will be advertised in a form that is aimed for consumers!@@G.A.C_Preserve
Funny thing is how Java was labeled as programming language for portability back in the days, but nowdays everything Java have to migrate to other languages in the name of portability. Especially in the case of C language that have platform dependent compilation and optimization quirks.
Everyone that buys Hytale is going to have Minecraft to play with friends, but not everyone's friends are going to get Hytale when they already have Minecraft. I think that's going to be the hardest part for Hytale. Getting people's friends over to a game that's similar to something people already have.
i mean tbf hytale promises to offer soo much more than minecraft i don't think that will make a difference . people will get it because Minecraft is getting stale.
I've been interested and excited for Hytale since mid-2020, and I think that one thing we should bear in mind is that the 2018 game already looked like a fairly finished version, now take that with the fact that they have been working and adding and polishing stuff in Hytale for 5 YEARS after that. I think we're forgetting how potentially grand the game will end up being, especially considering the resources they have from Riot. It's actually a bit tiresome seeing people constantly be like: "Hytale is dead", "Hytale will suck" or "Hytale will never come out". When in reality the devs have still made it clear that they're working hard on the game and care about the product. Lack of updates doesn't really mean a lack of development. They'll still almost certainly provide substantial info this year. Their tweets practically confirm it. So in the meantime, just let them cook. When it's closer to release, we'll know.
i just worry man. Riot games only cares about money. league of legends could be so so much more then it is but they have abandoned the game in favor of making movies and other games for more money. why doesn't LOL have, Map skins? Announcers? More Game modes? they have an awesome 2v2v2v2 mode then got rid of it for no reason and replaced it with nothing and said. ya we gana balance it a little and give it back in 5 months.... what. im scared Riot is going to say. "where is our money?" at some point and Hytale is going to add dumb shit to get it. We both know Riot did buy this game out of the goodness of their hearts.
A tip about attracting investors I heard, is showing a really polished trailer which contains all the necessary hooks for the game, and once you get a deal with a publisher or investor, you expand your work to the rest of the game. Maybe that is what Hytale have done by releasing that trailer. Maybe they did not have a fully finished and functional game, but instead only a trailer which they posted in order to get a company like Riot to invest in them.
7:55 After this is your second most watched video within just a week, there is still enough hype to be left when it releases. The hype will only die if they do No Mans Sky or exaggerate with the monetization.
Saying that changing from Java to C++ is only a slight performance increase is only something someone who has absolutely no clue about either language would say lol
dude, hytale got bought by RIOT GAME, if this is not serious x) so riot game demanded the game to not being coded in Java and use an other code language, that's probably one of the reason why the game take a lot of time to get out and riot game demanded the team to not share too much information about the developement
I would say extremely misleading title. It basically implies that the whole thing is a scam and the game is never coming out, which is literally the opposite of what he talks about
That’s why comments are the best indicator for the content of a video. You can’t trust thumbnails and titles. I tend to sometimes just not watch the video since I can get all the info from the comments instead. Misleading titles/thumbnails just makes me less likely to watch the vid now. Not just cuz they’re lies, it sort of just kills interest if you’re not getting what the you came for. That said, I get why some would like it since it’ll attract ppl who want their opinion validated, and then get to learn why they’re wrong. That and inflammatory clickbait gets the clicks. I clicked on the vid too after all, and are engaging with it.
I haven't thought of Hytale recently - and it's definitely news to me that they got bought by Riot, I thought maybe they had ceased production - but I certainly haven't forgotten the name brand. You had Hytale in this video title and I knew exactly what you were talking about.
I was wondering when you were going to get to this point @07:09 I'm glad I kept myself from rushing down into the comment section to point it out! As a programmer this is nearly the entire answer to me as for why it's taking so long. They didn't just re-write the entire game + engine to a lower level programming language (the lower you go the more time it takes to make the same thing), they were also making in-game development tools like animation editors and something that sounds like a live scripting VE/IDE. And they weren't done making the game to begin with!
The video is poorly researched and has a lot of "bad gaming takes™" or flat out fake info, like saying the switch to C++ is only to increase performance a little. The fact that you said that they don't advertise a game while also listing their advertising is also something worth noting. The game has no specific release date, so they'll obviously not go crazy on advertising. Still, saying "they don't really advertise their game besides (list of when they advertise their game)" is crazy. Don't worry though, I'm not one to just criticize without pointing out the good stuff. The editing is a bit overwhelming but shows a lot of care and effort, so that's great! Keep it up, the only real criticism I have is with the video being clickbaity to the point of being misinformation.
I am one of the few people I know who have kept track of this game's development and is definitely has been a long wait but I also came to the conclusion that for this game to be able to compete with minecraft, it needs to be an order of magnitude better in terms of quality and content. Otherwise, it will be left forgotten by the wayside like many other minecraft clones.
I still can’t wait for this game to come out. I’ve been excited for the game since it was announced, and when we do eventually start getting more actual my excitement will be rekindled. It’s unfortunate how long it’s been but this game will truly be perfect
7:14 As a programmer, I think you guys have not the slightest idea what kind of performance boost C++ has over Java. Its bonkers. If done correctly it requires about 5 to 10 times less RAM, and although highly dependent on the task, C++ can also easily be 10 times faster than Java. Instead of requiring a virtual machine (basically a small simulated computer on your computer) C++ compiles directly to machine code and does some strong optimizations along the way. That doesnt mean Java is bad tho, its still one of the fastest languages out there, and it has the great advantage of being way easier to develop, and is way more forgiving than C++. In Java you have tons of ready to use data structures and memory is handled automatically, whereas in C++... youre basically on your own. In general switching programming languages is a very bad Idea. You need different, competent people, especially for C++, and youll need big changes to benefit from the new language at all. However considering how much time they have spent by now im hopeful. Even though time apparently ment nothing for KSP2.
Honestly, with the amount of events that's happened for the Hytale team, I can understand why it's taken so long to come out. It seems like their original plan was to release the game in a series of beta patches and update it over time since they originally had no funding, but when riot stepped in and gave them the resources to go all out, that's exactly what they decided to do. They took a few paces back, started cleaning up and expanding their original horizons because they could. They've also have to uproot their engine and redo it in C++ so that performance will be much better and cleaner, but also it gives them the option for cross platforming! No more 'bedrock and java' editions. Not to mention they're making it available for people to put in their own code and custom models into their servers and versions of the game, and that's no easy feat either.
It doesn‘t matter if the hype isn‘t there. They are owned by Riot Games. They will do events in their other games on launch, hytale themed skins in valorant for example. Every social media personality that wants the views will also want to play it and it will spread like a wild fire on social media again. The only thing we have to do is wait until we can play it.
This video took almost a month to edit/script/research haha.

I'm gonna be honest, I completely forgot this game existed. This video reminded me that it existed just now.
In fairness, it doesn't exist.

@@SierraMysteria there is a difference, riot bought hyale. i think it might be a case of "trust the process"
What's for sure is that they're not going to flood the net with news when they don't know when the game will be ready.
thank you for so eloquently conveying the situation, it's exactly what I've been thinking to myself and mentioning to others.
I called that it was a scam 5 years ago, and everyone mocked me.
I mean, riot pumped out games within 3-4 year. If hytale, under riots paycheck, cant pump out a game in 8 years, I don't think its happening. Also More games have come out, on top of mincrafts modding scene being so much better, I doubtl hytale if it comes out will promote the same hype
Most AAAs seems to be done in 1 year because they are a buggy empty mess with no art direction.
I was hyped for Hytale, but I can't bring myself to believe that it'll be released any time soon.
i know bro, its rough
Looks like it'll be around 2025-2026
yeah making game takes time stupid
It's just as likely to come out as the Portal, half-life, and Team Fortress 3
Well, I got things to do, so I can wait all time necessary
Rewriting the game to C++ makes absolute sense since Riot is on their side and the money is basically not a problem anymore. Think about it, you don't wanna have split communities like with Java and the crossplay potential is absolutely huge.

You don't switch from Java to C++ just to get the game to "perform slightly better".
You do it to get exponentially better performance, more control over every facet of the game and to release it to a bigger amount of platforms.

Assuming that the devs got a massive funding boost when Riot bought them and maybe even additional input and ressources, it's realistic that they decided to take a few steps back and went for a more ambitious approach.

When Riot Games bought the studio they started rewriting the code from 0 using C++ instead of C# for the game and Java for server stuff
Soo we should get better performance and better game overall

My thoughts exactly
you are fundamentally misunderstanding the problem with the launch of Fallout 76 and Cyberpunk 2077
it literally have nothing to do with advertisment for the game.
its literally just extended development cycle => impatient shareholder pressure the release to protect their investment.
the longer the development cycle, the more money the investors have to pump into the project, and the more risky it become. and what do corporate suits hate the most ? risk, thats all there is.
just look at Overwatch 2 PvE, spent 6 years making the PvE only to cancel it last minute, because Microsoft bought them whole and there will be a restructure, which mean chacnes are the current shareholders and boardmembers arent gonna be the one to reap the payout from the OW2 PvE, thats why they stop funding it and eventually it get canceled.
Hopefully that makes sense, and though I do have to agree that large companies (like with Overwatch 2) have their own issues, I just had to clarify that small teams don’t struggle with the same issues they would
I actually got to meet one of the guys who works at Hypixel. The first thing I asked was about Hytale. Apparently they're still working on the game..
Yeah of course but that's what you asked him? That's stuff you can find with 5 mins of google
Mojang are really like a half-awake giant who wants to sleep all day haha
I guess they are going to wake up when they see that a game that they didn't know about anymore and just came out, is taking away their relevance and Microsoft asks about the drop in revenue.
the sideways slabs would've been enough to kill Minecraft
I remember when the trailer actually came out and it was exactly that: Minecraft was failing. Big servers closed, even Hypixel didnt hit its caps anymore. Everyone wanted a Hytale to bring a huge expansion to the Block Building-Genre.

Great video! As somebody who is a part of the community and knows some of the devs I think I can add a little more context here
The original Hytale team was about 40 people back in 2018 when the game was announced and as we speak there are more than 130 devs working on the game.

What do you mean?

8:28 Hytale hasnt done much advertising recently, _and thats a good thing._
At this point, Hytale is likely still _years_ away from actually releasing, even if they where to rush it.
This but shorter(cause i cant write) was exactly what i was thinking. Why advertise a unfinished game if your not planing on rleasing it soon
My guy, making games takes time :D They will advertise it - when its ready to ship
Then don't make the trailer until it was really ready like Rockstar for example
Rockstar is a massive titan in the industry with cash for days, the devs behind Hytale are a small studio aiming to make something awesome and were fishing for investors. This trailer was not meant for you it was meant for publishing companies (and they ended up getting that investment from Riot and Tencent ^^ who gave them money and hands off dev time)

Everyone that buys Hytale is going to have Minecraft to play with friends, but not everyone's friends are going to get Hytale when they already have Minecraft.
I think that's going to be the hardest part for Hytale.
Getting people's friends over to a game that's similar to something people already have.
I agree. Riot generally makes their games free to play, so they might influence them
i mean tbf hytale promises to offer soo much more than minecraft i don't think that will make a difference . people will get it because Minecraft is getting stale.

Slightly misleading title, but the editing and information are top-notch! Now I'm up to date on the Hytale news, and even more excited than ever!

@@bogdan7266 yeah, i went into the video expecting it to turn out a scam only to get good news hahah, the thumbnail is rather harshly phrased too
That’s why comments are the best indicator for the content of a video.
If it means the game will be good, I'm willing to wait for several more years, though they should really keep us in touch, maybe a QnA video?

Every sentence ends with an extra long syllable and it makes me a bit nutty
Yeah, thats why they made bedrock on minecraft because was created on C++ but people hate the bedrock and still wants tue java version
