Who's still watching in 2018? I am, so I'd like to share some facts I learned from Jim Henson's biography... 1. An addition to your first fact: Before they considered singers, they also considered actors like Simon MacCorkindale and Kevin Kline. When they did consider singers, it was Jim Henson who really wanted Sting, but - lucky for us - his 2 sons, Brian and John, protested in favour of Bowie, and voila! (Bowie had also been requested as a special guest on the Muppet Show by some of the Muppet performers, but had never made it, so it's nice that he was the one chosen for Labyrinth all those years later!) 2. Speaking of considering live actors, a lot of actresses auditioned for the role of Sarah, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Laura Dern, Mia Sara, Mary Stuart Masterson, Ally Sheedy, Jane Krakowski, and even a then 17-year-old Helena Bonham Carter. It took almost 10 months, and when Connelly auditioned in early 1985, she was pronounced "just right" almost the moment she walked in. 3. An addition to your facts about Hoggle: When Bowie first started learning how to interact with the puppets, he and an especially hard time with Hoggle. However, he laughed it off later, saying, "Once I'd overcome the disorientation, we all got along great!" 4. Speaking of learning to interact with puppets, Connelly also had trouble at first interacting naturally with them; she recalled it being hard in the beginning, because "it's strange thinking you're talking to a puppet." However, when the illusion became real to her, she explained, "The puppeteers make them so lifelike...and you can learn to really relate to each one of them." 5. The fierys were originally going to be called "wild things", but it was decided that that sounded too much like the story "Where the Wild Things Are". 6. Bowie winkingly describes Jareth as a "spoiled child, vain and temperamental, kind of like a rock 'n' roll star", although Jim Henson found Bowie to be nothing like that, and even described him as a "normal, well-grounded, straightforward person". Similarly, Connelly described Bowie some 30 years later as a "lovely, sweet guy". 7. On the first day of filming, since George Lucas was the executive producer, he surprised everyone y arranging for Darth Vader to stroll onto the set and present Jim Henson with a good-luck card. 8. Jim Henson seemed to be impressed with both of his human stars. Of Connelly, he explained, "I found I could talk very straight to her; I didn't have to tiptoe around her feelings or anything like that"; she didn't crave the constant reassurance many around Jim seemed to need. He also wrote privately that Bowie "had been wonderful to work with, and had added a truly magical spark as Jareth", and gave Bowie a free hand with the songs. And vice versa, Bowie admiringly described Jim as he most "unflappable guy he'd ever encountered in any profession", that he "couldn't believe Jim's capacity for work", and that his calm spirit made the whole film "a pleasure to work on for the entire cast and crew". 9. And now, a funny behind-the-scenes story: One day, Jim Henson's son, John, visited the set with a friend, and was starstruck when Bowie greeted him in one of the costumes as Jareth. At the end of the day, when finally out of costume and makeup, Bowie sought John out (apparently wearing a bright red jacket at the time), and John was so awed by the sight of the celebrity that he and his friend ducked out of the studio, unnoticed. "Supposedly, David Bowie went around looking for us for about an hour afterward," John sheepishly recalled later on, "But we were gone!" And that's the extent of my knowledge! (I hope I didn't sound like a know-it-all? This was all stuff I learned from reading a biography of Jim Henson.)
Wow, thanks for all of that! Realy cool! I love the one with Darth Vader visiting the set and giving Henson a good luck card. And the last one was so sweet and cute! Those lucky boys! I would've killed to meet David Bowie in his Jareth costume. I love stories of fans meeting celebrities.
This was one of the most influential movies of my childhood. Henson and Froud were a magical pairing and adding Bowie into the mix made this beautifully brilliant. We all NEED a bit of magic in our lives and this is a timeless provider of that! And lets not forget "The Dark Crystal" too! Oh And "Legend" (Tim Curry is such an amazing actor) And the cartoon "The Last Unicorn"! lol I was so lucky to be literally shaped into who I am today thanks to all these gems!
Lol those sacred tight pants helped usher in my awareness of sexuality in the most perfect balance of subtlety and in-your-face-ness imaginable! (Just an 80's baby reality);-)
I love this movie. I have the DVD , so I've lost count how many times I have watched it. I can't imagine anyone but David Bowie for this movie. He was and remains, one of the greats.
Another fact - there were (obviously) multiple Hoggles made for the film, but what a lot of people don't know is that one of the puppets never made it to the set. He was lost during travel and was found in the Alabama airports baggage claim some years later completely decayed. He was repaired (very badly - like seriously he's scary looking) and put on display. I thought the repaired Hoggle was scary, but the pictures of him when he was found give me nightmares.
I'm 31 and my family drove my dad crazy with this movie when we were kids..also I overplayed the animated Jungle book vhs..my dad brought it home with a few other gifts after we all gave him our contest entries of colored in posters for the walk for hunger in Massachusetts. .he said we all won even though we really all lost but we beleaved him for a long ass time until we got older and had that wait a second moment where we relized he was just being a nice dad ..so he gave us each a different gift and mine was the jungle book and one of my brothers got labrynth and then the vhs marathon began lol
Me too. I remember watching it shortly after its release and being sooo in love with Jennifer. She was my first crush when I was knee high to a grasshopper lol.
If you look up the official behind the scenes (full version on youtube) that's where all of these facts came from. Seriously, some of this video takes direct quotes to the point where its feels like plagiarism. I recommend watching as the making of the puppets is seriously interesting, and you get those awesome quotes directly from David Bowie.
Labyrinth is one of the greatest fantasy films of all the 80’s Here’s my list of my favourite films from the 80’s 1. Labyrinth 2. Never Ending Story 3. Dark Crystal 4. The Goonies 5. Back to the Future And Plus David Bowie was iconic as Jareth Labyrinth (that’s his last name)
Wow, all this time I honestly thought that Bowie did his own hand tricks with the crystal balls... I even remember hearing that he had at some point, so I was absolutely convinced until they actually showed the angle that revealed Motion... Guess you learn something new every day
I have shown a few people of recent times this movie for the first time, all hate it. But as for me and my sister, mom, and aunts, it will always be a tear jerking masterpiece
Alicia Madden Played this movie for my 12 year old daughter a few weeks ago...she left the room after a few minutes refusing to watch.....so disappointed in her 😔😔
When I first showed it to one of my friends we got to just before the Fiery bit and she told me she was bored and didn't want to watch it anymore. She made me turn it off. Now it's one of her favorite movies and we're constantly throwing lines at each other. To be fair, Sarah is not the most redeemable character in the beginning of the film. I didn't really care for it much when I first watched because I thought she was so overdramatic (and this could in part be because the movie didn't really highlight any of Sarah's backstory save for subtle stuff in the background - stuff I didn't catch until the 2nd and 3rd time around) and kind of spoiled.
Maybe it has to do with when they watch it? My friend recently watched "Jaws" and "A Christmas Story" and he was just like "Meh". I wonder if they'd liked these classics if they'd seen them when they were younger.
My then-young daughter introduced me to "Labyrinth" and the music of David Bowie. It has become one of my favorite movies and David Bowie's music has been added to a long list of favorite artists.
I just saw it for the third time, saw it in the theater at 16 and again in a theater at 51. It's annoying and creepy enough to be iconic. Why does the Goblin King wear thin sweat pants without underwear? There are too many screeching characters that are supposed to be amusing. My ear plugs had to get involved.
This is another hands down must see for every generation. It is a must!!! I had all my foster kids watch this and when my daughter finally arrived she watched it with mama too. And now it is one of all of my kids favorites
Thanks so much! I have been having a David Bowie You Tube Fest tonight. Damn, it's so sad that he is gone. I had forgotten for a decade or so how amazing he was (not on purpose!)
I fucking love this movie. Regardless of the movie mistakes there may be, it's amazing. My one flaw is that Sarah had the chance to be with Jareth forever and she didn't take it. Like, what was the point in making him in love with you if you don't even want him!? He's JARETH.
Fairly good but you missed: 1. This was a concept Terry Jones and Brian Froud had for a sequel to Time Bandits which then morphed into 'Labyrinth'2. John Lasseter directed the CGI owl sequence.3. There's Darth Vader, a stormtrooper and a gamorrean guard reflected in the armour of the goblins.
Well done! I did NOT know until today that Hoggle was a combination of person and puppet. :D And kudos for not being crude when referencing balls. The innuendos, double entendres and tongue-in-cheek comments were great.
I read a theory about Labyrinth. Jared was obviously so very in love with Sarah that he stole her brother just so she would go find him and hopefully fall in love with him. Well, this theory said that the original Sarah didn't fall in love with Jarad so every year (or whatever) there would be a new Sarah, a Sarah who would say the words that would make the Goblin King take her brother away and threaten to turn him into a goblin if she didn't solve the labyrinth... Each time a Sarah did this she would lose her battle to save her brother and he would become a goblin, hence all of the goblins. They are all actually little brothers of previous Sarah's who failed to solve the labyrinth. This also gives reason for why Hoggle says "oh its you" in such a way that he's quite frankly so damn fed up of seeing Sarah arrive at the gates of the labyrinth... He's seen her so many times before... He's over it!... I can't explain this theory very well but it's a very good one 😊
It would have been different. The confused sexual dynamic on Jennifer Connely's part would have been repulsion rather than attraction. It might have been about as good a movie (technically) but it would have creeped out its target audience. They'd have had to go for a PG-13 and market it as horror, I think.
I mean he did play as villain from another fantasy movie that came out a year before labyrinth with darkness from the movie legend so I guess it probably would have been similar to that
The original Hoggle puppet somehow ended up at the Unclaimed Baggage Museum in Scotsboro, AL. Eventually the Hensen company found out that it had ended up there and allowed the museum to keep it. The museum itself is one smallish room of display cases within the Unclaimed Baggage store. I assume it is still there, I saw it about ten years ago and still think about this often.
bless you for this video. my heart broke when I heard the news. but luckily, when I'm laying in bed, all I have to do is turn to the left and see his face, for i have one of the original 1986 movie posters on my wall. he was my first celebrity crush and pretty much set me on the path of loving fantasy guys.
+Deena Dunderdale it hit me hard. I actually cried. it's like the loss of a distant family member. I've got two magazines dedicated to him, and a friend sent me a little doll dress made with Labyrinth screen printed material since his passing.
In October I met Wendy who is the mother of Toby and helped Jim Henson with the making of the movie and created the designs of the goblins, and she signed my Labyrinth picture and we got a picture together. She's friends with my art teacher so she came to school for a day to talk about the set and how she makes the goblins and what it was like working with David ❤
Some other things people might not know. 1. Brian Henson, Jim Henson’s son, voiced the role of Hoggle and you can see him also operating the character t 7:31. 2. Although it is now considered a cult classic, it was actually a failure at the box office taking less than half it's production cost at the box office. Legend, another fantasy movie from the year before also only took half its production cost at the box office. 3. It was the last movie Jim Henson directed, probably because it was a flop. His previous movie The Dark Crystal was a hit. 4. The Wiseman puppeteer is Frank Oz who also did the voice of that other wise man, YODA in Star Wars. 5. The weird upside down room which is shown in the this video is taken from the most famous work of the artist M. C. Escher entitled Relativity. She has a print of it on her wall in the opening of the film.
I so wish Jim Henson got to see that it became a well-loved film before he died. From what I recall, it's because it did poorly that it was his last film. Not that he knew he decided it would be his last but that he took a break from movies because it wasn't a hit.
Even if it is 2 years late, im glad to have seen this video, thanks for giving the Starman such a "tight" tribute on the only movie i can call my first favourite.

(Bowie had also been requested as a special guest on the Muppet Show by some of the Muppet performers, but had never made it, so it's nice that he was the one chosen for Labyrinth all those years later!)
However, he laughed it off later, saying, "Once I'd overcome the disorientation, we all got along great!"
4. Speaking of learning to interact with puppets, Connelly also had trouble at first interacting naturally with them; she recalled it being hard in the beginning, because "it's strange thinking you're talking to a puppet." However, when the illusion became real to her, she explained, "The puppeteers make them so lifelike...and you can learn to really relate to each one of them."
"Supposedly, David Bowie went around looking for us for about an hour afterward," John sheepishly recalled later on, "But we were gone!"
And that's the extent of my knowledge!
What about Secret of NIMH, Neverending Story, Willow and Princess Bride?
+Johnlindsey289 omg yes!!! Especially The Princess Bride ❤
Lil'Bull Manders
The 80's was a golden age of fantasy eh?
i miss when i could just go with my mom to blockbuster and rent the last unicorn... it was my favorite movie, as i was so scared of the fireys!
Lol those sacred tight pants helped usher in my awareness of sexuality in the most perfect balance of subtlety and in-your-face-ness imaginable! (Just an 80's baby reality);-)
RIP David Bowie. Labyrinth is a masterpiece. Nobody else could have done better.
I love this movie. I have the DVD , so I've lost count how many times I have watched it. I can't imagine anyone but David Bowie for this movie. He was and remains, one of the greats.
Really gives you more of an appreciation for this movie seeing how much hard work it took to make.
David Bowie and Jim Henson Both Was Legends R.I.P
loved this man so much so sad he's gone, he'll never be forgotten RIP x o x
This movie, CGI owl and all, was freaking AWESOME! It was a trailblazer! And David Bowie's soundtrack is still one of the best!
I'm 36 years old and I still love this movie!
I'm 40 and still love it too :).
45 and I think it's the best.
Me too. I remember watching it shortly after its release and being sooo in love with Jennifer. She was my first crush when I was knee high to a grasshopper lol.
Bowie bulge would not be the same without Bowie.
+DEFxRECON i love your account picture X'D haha
There is an awesome video by Flight of the Concords, called Bowies in space. If you've never seen it, you should.
That puppet isn't Merlin, it's Ambrosius.
NotMostGirls indeed!
But... wasn't Ambrosius "Inspired" by Merlin? Like everything else... something from her "Real" or "Home" life made it into the Labyrinth?
My Uncle did the barking voice of Ambrosius, : My claim to fame :)
Jenny Milne is your uncle a dog
AxellPhotography Yeah like how Dorothy’s real life reflects when she’s in Oz.
RIP Bowie... Super kickass movie!
okay the comment about MJ wearing those tight pants made me spit my drink. You need to warn the people.
I brought a friend to the movie today ( AMC played it) and told him at the start to look at Bowie's pants. 😂 He couldn't not see it .
This is movie awesome when I'm both sober, high & drink
Labyrinth is one of the greatest fantasy films of all the 80’s
Here’s my list of my favourite films from the 80’s
1. Labyrinth
2. Never Ending Story
3. Dark Crystal
4. The Goonies
5. Back to the Future
And Plus David Bowie was iconic as Jareth Labyrinth (that’s his last name)
I'm still obsessed with this film I love it ngl I watch is over 100 a year I'm not joking (probably more) it's an obsession
People who hate this movie don't have the soul or heart for its genius
So far everyone I've shown this movie to don't like it. And then they see it again and they always tell me they've changed their minds.
This movie stills rocks just as much as it did when I was a child
I just saw it for the third time, saw it in the theater at 16 and again in a theater at 51. It's annoying and creepy enough to be iconic. Why does the Goblin King wear thin sweat pants without underwear? There are too many screeching characters that are supposed to be amusing. My ear plugs had to get involved.
We miss you, and we still love you, David Bowie!
"Cos David Bowie was the freaking best." PREACH!
This is another hands down must see for every generation. It is a must!!! I had all my foster kids watch this and when my daughter finally arrived she watched it with mama too. And now it is one of all of my kids favorites
You remind me of the Babe
+TheFewzz what babe?
+FanfareT.Loudest The babe with the power.
+PheydraSunstar what power?
+AichiKitsune The power of voodoo.
who do
I cackled so hard when you made the joke about Bowie's pants. You get us!
This is just 'the making of the labyrinth 'word for word
Thanks so much! I have been having a David Bowie You Tube Fest tonight. Damn, it's so sad that he is gone. I had forgotten for a decade or so how amazing he was (not on purpose!)
David bowie was perfect for his part he's got the style and he's got that attitude
One of my all time favourite movies. Thanks for making me appreciate it even more.
I fucking love this movie. Regardless of the movie mistakes there may be, it's amazing. My one flaw is that Sarah had the chance to be with Jareth forever and she didn't take it. Like, what was the point in making him in love with you if you don't even want him!? He's JARETH.
She was also just 14...no 14 year old knows WHAT they want.
She was 16
That’s not the point of the movie... if she just went with him there would be no story
To save her brother!!
Oh man, I watched this movie so many times. These background secrets just made it all the better
Fairly good but you missed:
One of my favourite films of my childhood and I still love it to this day great film no one could of pulled this off except david bowie
"one of the most batshit parts in a fully batshit movie" lol I have to agree. I love Labyrinth but it's totally insane.
Billy Idol is the only substitute I’d (maybe) be willing accept for David Bowie as the character Jareth.
I can imagine Michael as the Goblin King😍But at the same time, David rocks the hair
Wow! That’s very interesting!
This is...
Actually a really good theory...
Maxien, that's a great plot for a story. You should write it as a fanfic.
Entertaining voice over! Still one of my all-time fave movies out there
Part of me wondered what it would have been like if Tim Curry played the villain instead.
It would have been different. The confused sexual dynamic on Jennifer Connely's part would have been repulsion rather than attraction. It might have been about as good a movie (technically) but it would have creeped out its target audience.
They'd have had to go for a PG-13 and market it as horror, I think.
I personally would have loved this had Bowie not played the part
@@zimriel Um... It was PG, because of Hoggle relieving himself in the pond.
Instead of a Goblin King, we would've had a sweet transvestite
I mean he did play as villain from another fantasy movie that came out a year before labyrinth with darkness from the movie legend so I guess it probably would have been similar to that
One of my favorite movies growing up I love David Bowie in it he was a very talented man
I love the little worm!!! "Come inside meet the Misses!"
Ok i lied i love the whole movie and YES David Bowie Is the freaking BEST!!!!!!!!
Here's another one: This movie's screenplay was written by Terry Jones from Monty Python.
I still love this movie. Bless David Bowie
time for a "Dark Chrystal" episode !!!!!
I showed my daughter this thinking she would say its too old. Shes watched it 10 times since. :)
Classic movie
A good movie never grows old.
Oh god...I knew _all_ of these. I never know all of these. I'm in too deep, man. I'm in this fandom _too goddamn deep_ .
join the club...i watched it for the first time two weeks ago and im freaking hooked
A year later and you're still missed, Mr. Bowie.
bless you for this video.
my heart broke when I heard the news. but luckily, when I'm laying in bed, all I have to do is turn to the left and see his face, for i have one of the original 1986 movie posters on my wall.
he was my first celebrity crush and pretty much set me on the path of loving fantasy guys.
I have a David Bowie tribute on my wall it's cool to look at I think it has about 15 different pictures
I actually have a 12 inch tall figure of him that says a few lines from the movie. It's perfect sized to pair up with a Barbie.
+Carrie Wright that I cool how is his death affecting you?
I meant that is cool
+Deena Dunderdale
it hit me hard. I actually cried.
it's like the loss of a distant family member.
I've got two magazines dedicated to him, and a friend sent me a little doll dress made with Labyrinth screen printed material since his passing.
I used to have a major crush on Jareth the Goblin King when i first saw the movie.. and I’m now realizing i might still have
Brian Froud is one of my favorite artists
In October I met Wendy who is the mother of Toby and helped Jim Henson with the making of the movie and created the designs of the goblins, and she signed my Labyrinth picture and we got a picture together. She's friends with my art teacher so she came to school for a day to talk about the set and how she makes the goblins and what it was like working with David ❤
Rest in paradise David Bowie
One of my favorite childhood movies. Thanks for doing a video on it.
"A fully batshit movie." Wonderfully succinct and accurate description :)
This was such an amazing tribute. Thank you! You had me rolling with the comment on the rock star with the ridiculous pants...😹😹
Who else but Bowie? His looks like an elf for crist sakes! He was perfect!
This was legit one of my two favorite movies growing up.
R.I.P David Bowie gone but never forgotten
just bought the Blu-ray version of this movie! one of my all-time favorite!
Love the soundtrack to this day lol !!
RIP David Bowie and your magik balls ..........
Lol man...the commentary is informative and hysterical. Top marks for a great video.
I watched legend and labyrinth over and over when I was a kid. Tom cruise and David Bowie :). Man I'm old!!!! Lol
+Heather Taylor Im 31 and i did the same it's the equivalent to kids watching frozen repeatedly now
I so wish Jim Henson got to see that it became a well-loved film before he died. From what I recall, it's because it did poorly that it was his last film. Not that he knew he decided it would be his last but that he took a break from movies because it wasn't a hit.
OH SO THAT'S WHAT THE PAINTING IS CALLED! i knew who made it, but i had no idea that it was named Relativity!!
Even if it is 2 years late, im glad to have seen this video, thanks for giving the Starman such a "tight" tribute on the only movie i can call my first favourite.
