One of the genius of our time !
Still one of the best-ever documented performances of Don Giovanni.
I saw this production on television 24 years ago... still the best opera performance ever seen!
Have you seen the film version by Joseph Losey?
Thank you, Concertgebouw! This was earth shaking.
This was one of the best deliveries of Don Giovanni I have ever heard. Nothing wrong with it anywhere - the singing, acting music everything was on the ticket.
I'm dying from envy of those people lucky enough to have been in the audience that day. The operas that John Eliot Gardiner headed at the Concertgebouw are so energetic and beautifully performed. And what talent! If you haven't seen the Die Zauberflote he did here, it too is amazing.
It is one of the best performances of Don Giovanni! Amsterdam Concertgebouw is very special and unique. Music, singing and acting is so powerful and real, that intensifies our emotions, while listening and watching.
Don Giovanni is not an opera (only) about men, women and sex....It is about love, passion, honesty, justice, truth, human virtues and weaknesses...
A free spirit? An ad-dick-t.
Mozart's 'Don Giovanni' is a resplendent monumental saga... The theme in this opera is a reflection and psychology of how most men behave in most societies. The music... oh yes, the music... what a beauty! It is such a sublime and complex magical work! The music channels a combination of subtle joy, grace, serenity combined at different intervals with the dynamics, suspense and exuberance of the drama. The emotions remain with all its potency, it is elicited in the theme and the musical melodic rhythms. 'Don Giovanni,' has the myth and religious influence in the story as well.
The work is so charming and dramatic, so sensitive, so truthful and there is the heraldic spirit within everything Mozart composed!
The English Baroque Soloist singers are superb histrionics. The vocal combinations of tenor, soprano, bass, alto and mezzo-soprano pitches vibrate poetic sensitivity. The Monteverdi Choir are spectacular singers. Such gravitas and empathy between the soloists, the choir, the orchestra and Maestro Gardiner are mesmerizing. A fabulous orchestra!
Maestro John Elliot Gardiner is a paragon conductor! An exquisitely refined rendition!
This is the best Don Giovanni I have ever seen, including going to Prague to see it in Mozart's opera house there! The singers, individually and as ensemble, were wonderful, and the orchestra, marvelously led by John Eliot Gardner, the expressive basis of each stage of the drama. Bravo!
Just one word: Fantastic!
Ildebrando D'Arcangelo is so cute as leporello. What a handsome man!
This dramatised concert performance is better than most staged productions which can often detract from the singing.
It's great to have this opportunity to view a really spectacular performance..
Charlotte Margiono in her blooming prime, wouw in the extreme. She's amazing!!!! One couldn't imagine how wonderful her voice later would bloom. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Die allerbeste Don Giovanni-Aufführung, die ich je gehört-gesehen habe! Bin sooo glücklich!
Rod Gilfry is a great talent and a rare force of nature, and this version of Don Giovanni is without equal. Please leave it on UA-cam! And Leporello! D'Arcangelo is Don Giovanni's prefect sidekick with a beautiful, effortless voice with he combines with great acting. The entire cast is superb and John Eliot Gardiner's directing of both the music and theater performances is unique! Thank you all for this gem.
And also the brilliant Luba Orgonasova, surely not a "top model" style like we see in too many productions, but what a voice , what a temperament !
I agree with you. Rod is a good looking guy, great voice and acting skills also. He was also in the Sechseläutenplatz Opernhaus which I regularly visited.
Yeah she's a great artist but she's saving her voice in ensembles you can hardly hear her...@@taf44tt8io
Fantastisch! Geweldig! Bravo! Brava
Many thanks, Hupjeflupje !
I was present during this performance and was blown away by this uncomparable opera in concert performance. The finale is written in rock in my memory. Public crying, shouting encores which is not common in the Netherlands. There was TV broadcast which I recorded on video at the time. Now I finfd it here! A deep thank you for sharing this performans of the 20th Century.
Une si grande puissance dans une telle simplicitée de décor;bravo Gardiner!!!Extaordinaire.
extraordinaire!
Viva la libertà!
This is a typical Gardiner performance, characterized by precision, quick tempos, clean articulation of phrases, and clarity. All of his performances strike me as being scholarly to the point of being indifferent to the spirit of the music. This particular performance leaves me breathless, in need of a little respite now and then from the relentless forward motion of his tempos and drive.
LOL. Now that's cheerful!
I am really enjoying this performance, I tell you. I think Don Giovanni is great here, and the orchestra is superb. Enjoy!
A "vacsorameghívás"...Irtóztató jelenet.
És csodálatos zene!
The last 5 bars of this performance is really perfect. Bravo timpani
Превосходное исполнение. Просто наслаждение для слуха.
Best production ever!! More exciting than any other full staged versions. Love Rodney Gilfry!!
Thanks for posting. The more Mozart on UA-cam, the better.
OMG it’s a already quarter of a century since I’d seen this production for the first time. It hasn’t aged at all, marvelous as always! Gardiner and Gilfry are fantastic! Love Leporello and Zerlina duet here, wonderfully preformed!
Och wat een goede herinneringen. Ik bezocht deze voorstelling en was maandenlang totaal van de kaart van Gilfry. Ik was dan ook pas zestien... Bedankt voor het uploaden, leuk om weer te zien!
the tenor is very good. and i love the fast tempos.
Prégardien !!! Have you listen him singing BACH ? or Lieder ?
Don Giovanni is one of my favorite operas by Mozart.
Rebecca Mackey 、
D'Arcangelo. Awesome Leporello!
Please Archiv, DG, Dutch Television please clean up and release this as a DVD with multisubs! Its hands down the best Don I've ever enjoyed and with some good English subs I could create a new pack of opera fans if I could only buy it.
Wow! Astonishing! Such a performance
One of the best performance of Don Giovanni, ever,
FANTASTIC!!! What an original production. Thank you for sharing
Saw this one on TV, but was there when they gave 'Idomeneo' Which was also a stunning performance....Don Giovanni, what else? It is not an opera buffa but a drama giocosa...drama and fun.
I was in the audience then. A truly unforgettable experience. Top cast and conductor. Thank you for posting this
wonderful!
csodálatos!
I don't understand why this wonderful recording ist not available on DVD? It is so much better than anythyng that's available although (or because) it is not really an stage production. I absolutely love this performance.
This is the best expression of this opera, no doubt about it. Really a wonderful performance!!
Have you seen the Joseph Losey Film version?
Maravilloso!
This is a very fine performance of Don Giovanni. The whole cast seems to be inspired and thus sing with the greatest enthusiasm. It is a rendition in which one is indeed stimulated to be a part of it all. Thanks for posting.
Ildebrando is amazing !!
MOZART too amazing!
I don't understand why this recording isn't available on DVD. It's best that i know.
Thanks God I'm Italian so I don't need subtitles...it would have been very difficult :/ still in this way it is difficult to understand every single word obviously because of the singing. Great performance! After "Le nozze di Figaro" another great job done by Gardiner and Gilfry proves himself a fantastic Don Giovanni after his Count of Almaviva.
потрясающе!!!!
Oh my God! This was fabulous and with an absolutely terrifying conclusion! Mozart's genius was truly staggering. Thank you for uploading.
@Psalm 27 Mozart didn't write the ending. Tirso de Molina did.
@@peace-now Tirso was a Spanish writer, not a musician, more than a century previous Mozart, so he couldn't write the end of the opera. The text of the ending was written by the librettist Da Ponte. and the music, of course, by Mozart.
GARDINER, one of the best conductor ever ! ! ! ! !
Great job!
my favorite opera :D
i have watched this literally 10000 times when i was a kid, i love it so much! huge part of my childhood
Valery C It must have been. That's about 3,5 years of watching this video.
omg you are hilarious Darth Tesla
hoi Valery
Hey Aron!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Aron Bakker
Oh this is amazing, you must have a great childhood, all we need to do, is show this and other Mozart works to our Childs, is powerful to our minds.
très magnifique!!!
Orgonasova's Mi Tradi is a model of perfection. The thunderous applause is a testament of her examplary technique. Why she is not a bigger star I simply can't comprehend!
Desmond P T Mi Tradi is Elvira's aria. Charlotte Margiono is Elvira, not Luba Orgonasova.
@@jasonhurd4379 Apologies, I meant Non mi dir.
Bravi 🎼🌷🌷🌷🌷🎼
An original and lively production.
Браво! Браво! Великолепно!
Very clean and beautiful performance.
la mejor versión! el mejor elenco!
Thanks so much for posting this!I will never ever get enough of Mozart's music and DG is my absolute favorite. I have 3 recordings with different casts and I love the subtle differences in each one.
A few years ago I saw Mozart's singspiel "Zaide" during the Mostly Mozart Festival in NYC , it was set in the present and it was AWESOME! Why not play around with his operas , apparently he didn't have strict notations ,leaving interpretations open .
The music transcends anything!!!!
Just finished listening to the 1st act - this is a truly amazing performance !!!!
Brendan Lawlor - if you like DonGiovanni you absolutely have to check this out...
I absolutely love Don Giovanni. I have never seen a performance live. It's on my bucket list.
A lot of thanks !
I know this is old, but I haven't come across Rodney Gilfry in a long time. I love him.
Het concert was in Amsterdam en daar spreekt men N e d e r l a n d s , 23 miljoen Europeanen spreken Nederlands als moedertaal.
i'd like to thank you, uploeder(Hupjeflupje). This full clip is the opera i'm very looking forward to watch for. Gardiner, Rodney.... Thanks.
Indeed, I don;t think there is a video or DVD recording available. Only this version I've taped from TV....
SOLID performance!
Maravillosa! Fantástica! Excelente! Lástima que no quieras compartir tu comentario.
Why do some people feel that 18th Century opera needs to be "updated" with modern costumes and settings? A rogue like Don Giovanni would have been tolerated in 1787, but much less so today. Mozart's opera does not need any "help" from those who want to bring it into the 21st Century.
This is one of few thoroughly convincing and conceptually truthful versions of Don Giovanni, unfortunately it did not get the proper appreciation of musicologists, though the music part recreated beautifully by maestro Gardiner allows us to feel Mozartean atmosphere more than many elaborate productions. On CD it is also good though there is some problem with volume of soloists, chorus and orchestra. But it should take an important place in the history of DJ productions, as it deserves.
Great version outside decorated stage....
Revisiting this 09 Oct '16.
Revisiting this 01 Sep. 2021.
The aria starting around 28:00 is excellently and delightfully performed by Rodney Gilfry.
Sorry...Correction. This is the Vienna version which Mozart wrote after the original which was premiered in Prague. He tried to please the viennese audience and the new cast he had that's why he rearranged many scenes. Of course, the viennese audience was not impressed like in Le nozze di Figaro...
First time i've listened Mozart's "Don Giovanni", and that's shameful...
The singer in the title-role has given a memorable performance in regard with both singing and acting.
He gives him a decent smack at 21:25 ha! This is a great performance throughout! Wish I could've been there.
MOZART? The only SUNSHINE! BRAVISSIMO!
Verzeihung, ich habe die Daten doch gefunden! Sory for the "verdammt!"
@2:37:56 Amazing!
Oh, so this is one of the songs where Dimanda Hagan gets her title card intros. Neat!
Best
2:10, starts Overture
Deze Don Giovanni lijkt wel een broer van Hans Teeuwen.
Haha ja hopelijk niet qua karakter anders komt hij nog in de problemen...
The cast is exactly the same as the CD set!
The best, however, is the version of Harnoncourt from From the Opernhaus Zürich, 2001.
Pregardien is awesome!
champagne aria, hilarious! 1:04:37 altogether, so enjoyable!
2:37:54 Best part.
32:23 - priceless!
Magistrale uitvoering! Is ie ook op DVD?
But there is a CD, and it is quite adequate leaving scope for imagination and emphasizing the beauty of some pieces in the interpretation of Maestro Gardiner.
Wow, Brad Pitt is versatile! I'm just kidding, that was great. Thank you for the whole performance!
In der Liga von Klemperer und Furtwängler. Aber warum, verdammt, gibt es wieder keine Daten über die Sänger??
I can´t thank you in your language because I´m portuguese and I don´t understand dutch or even germain.I try english. I have the CD of this version and I looked for the video everywhere but i di´n´t find it.
Maybe the Concertgebouw has the best acoustics but it very definitely is not a particularly comfortable place to hear music - at least in the summer. No air conditioning.
WOW! AMazing performance
This is so much better than a full dressed stage performance. The Zerlina rape attempt scene is fun!
Nee, helaas niet.
Maar met deze bezetting is er (van een andere uitvoering) wél een CD opname beschikbaar.
Ik kan geen link plaatsen meer even Googlen op Gardiner & Giovanni en je vind hem bij o.a. Amazon..
Charlotte Margiono is like a giantess next to the other singers. She towers over them!
Slow ending to Act I?? What are you talking about. He kicked the piu stretto into gear! If you mean the final two bars, a touch of ritardando into the double bar certainly kept it from being too abrupt.
around 2:00:00 that scene is one I haven't seen in other versions...
