    🍀Citric acid information:
When citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap.
A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water.
These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap.
A chelator binds to these metals so that they can’t bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won’t react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases.
Citric acid does not lower the pH of soap. Instead it consumes some of the lye and increases the superfat. Add 6 g extra lye for every 10 g of citric acid added to a soap recipe if you want to keep the superfat % at the same level.
How much citric acid should be added to soap?
Usage rate in bar soap is 1-2% of the oil weight.
    How to use citric acid
Add citric acid to the distilled water and dissolve completely before adding the lye, or make a separate solution of citric acid and distilled water and add to the oils.

I figured out it's a lot easier to deal with aloe if you freeze it first. The cells separate and break apart like ice cubes completely leaving the skin behind. I process 3 huge leaves within 5 minutes doing that.

Will you please explain how you process it? Do you freeze it, thaw it and then cut it up, or do you cut it when frozen and then thaw it to separate it? Thanks

I'm curious why the citric acid was added so late in this recipe compared to how you usually do it, and why the essential oils so early? Usually you add the citric acid to the liquid before the lye and usually you add the essential oils after you emulsify.
Also, did much of the sage scent come through in the soap?

I'm new to soap-making. I'm in my 3rd week of my soap-making class. We started making soap using used cooking oil (strained), no additives, just lye+used oil. The soap came up fine, no 'fried' or burning smell during curing. It smells like soap.
But the soap will only be used to wash dishes & clothes & other general cleaning, not for bathing. I guess there's no problem if you want to use it for bathing though, as it's not oily or smelly anymore. Don't think it has the many nourishing, moisturising properties as soaps made with mixed oils and/or butter.

Just use your aloe juice (after strained) as a full water replacement ... I make backyard aloe soap all the time. The reason you freeze aloe into cubes it because the reaction with lye could create a volcano effect if not. If the meat is left intact (not strained), then it will not fully saponify and could go rancid inside the soap.
