    I tried your rosemary flax gel soap (I was 5g short of cocoa butter so I substituted 5g of beeswax from my hives) and it worked really well! And then I tried the same base recipe but without the rosemary infusion, flax gel or essential oils (I used the soapcalc to estimate how much water to replace the gel with) and it came out looking like a block of butter! Works well though and will be nice for people with scent issues, though I think if I do that again without the flax gel I will decrease the water just a bit as it took a while to solidify and it cracked a bit on the top. Today I'm planning to try an olive oil soap with 5% beeswax and some honey, and if I have time maybe a pure coconut oil soap with peppermint essential oil.
    Thanks so much for all your wonderful videos, they give me such fun ideas. My mom has a bay laurel tree and I'm definitely planning to try the bay laurel olive oil soap when she prunes it, though I think I may try it as a cold process instead of hot process, I feel like cold process makes prettier soaps. Eventually I'll get an idea of what I want to gel and what I don't and how I need to control temperatures to that effect, so far the only thing I think I need to do is mix things just a little bit warmer when working with beeswax as while cutting the loaf into bars I've found little bits of what I think might be beeswax that congealed before the rest of the oil it was in did. Which is weird, because it has never done that when I've combined it with olive or mineral oil before...
    I'm still using some lip balm I made from the two tablespoons of spare rosemary-infused olive oil and some beeswax, I need to do some experiments to see exactly how much beeswax I want when I make stuff like that.
    I have found that using my rice cooker with 2 servings-worth of water in the lliner and a pyrex bowl on top works really well, its keep warm setting is perfect for infusing oils overnight and its high setting is great for melting the solid oils. I just need to remember to bring a pair of oven mitts up to the room where I do my soapmaking! (t's a spare washroom with a big countertop, and the shower's right beside me if anything exciting happens with the lye).
    I'm having so much fun with soapmaking!

      @@tellervo. Well, I overheated one last night so I'll probably try again, I think 5% beeswax and a tablespoon of honey was a bit ambitious as it was starting to solidify as I was waiting for the lye to cool, and once it started reaching trace, it got thick really quickly so I need to figure out how to give myself a little more working time if I want to pour it into a mold where voids really matter. I was surprised when I did the 100% coconut one with peppermint oil how much working time I had, that one took a very long time to trace but once it did sollidify it went fast and I probably should have cut the loaf last night as it was a bit brittle this morning. I'm suspecting something about water amounts might have to do with working time, I have run some of your recipes thorugh soapcalc and you use significantly less water in some of your recipes than their default settings recommend so I guess that's my next experiment, try two batches identical except for water percentage and maybe essential oil composition. FOR SCIENCE!!!

    Another beautiful soap!!! I do have a question: When measuring the lye, I usually have bits of lye stuck to bottom of container. I tried paper cup, plastic container, glass, but lye particles remain stuck. It's a bit annoying actually. What container have you found doesn't do that? Or is there a method to the madness that I haven't learned about yet?

    • @lalithanagarajan1055
      @lalithanagarajan1055 2 місяці тому

      I'm not an expert in soap making. But I have struggled a lot with this problem. And finally found a solution.
      First, caustic soda should be of a good quality.
      Second it should be preserved airtight. When weighing it, the container we use to weigh , the spoon used to take the soda out, all of them should be definitely dry without any moisture.
      Third, when adding caustic soda to the pre-weighed water or liquid, add little by little and stir continuously to avoid clumping.
      I follow these methods and there is no problem of undissolved lye. I don't even filter it.
      Good luck.

      @lalithanagarajan1055
      Let me clarify. I'm not experiencing undisolved lye. When measuring out the lye into a container, I have used paper cups, glass and plastic. As I pour the lye into water, some lye particles remain in cup. Sort of reminds me of static cling. Anyone using a container where all the lye pours out into water?

    • @tellervo.
      @tellervo.  2 місяці тому

      Thank you so much! I think plastic is definitely worst, paper cups have worked pretty well for me, now I use a stainless steel cup and there's usually nothing stuck there😊

    How do you determine how much cornstarch to add? Is it 1/2 tsp to 10ml of fragrance? or something like that? How well does this work to preserve the scent? I've been searching for something like this! Thank you so much for this video!

    • @tellervo.
      @tellervo.  15 днів тому +1

      I've just used half a tsp for this size batch, i usually use 3-5% essential oils☺️ I think it works pretty well, but it's not perfect, I think we just have to accept that essential oils don't have the same staying power as fragrance oils🌷

    • @brigidlaffey7343

      Brigitte, You can simply place a piece of cardboard on top to protect the top, then wrap it in a Throw - which is a small blanket or knee rug - , an old blanket, or towels, or place it - wrapped preferably- into a chilly bin. Even newspapers would insulate well.
      Personally, I preheat my oven to its lowest setting then pop the soap in with the oven switched off, and leave it overnight, undisturbed. But 2-3 hours should do the trick 😊. Some people use their oven light but we don’t have that setting on our ovens in NZ

    Hi Sarah, Please could you help me? I was binge watching all your videos and decided to finally dive in and make a shampoo bar, mainly because my friend gave me garden-fresh rosemary bunches and I didnt know what else to do with them. So I plunged into making a rosemary shampoo bar. But when I poured the lye mix into the oils, I discovered that quite a lot of the lye had solidified at the bottom of my container, probably because I didnt stir the lye into the water well enough. So now I have a very wet mixture, probably not enough lye to create a chemical reaction with my oils and take me to trace. I've been stick blending on and off for over 4 hours now, but while the mixture that is caked on the blender seems to have thickened slightly, the batter in the bowl is totally liquid. How can I rescue this? I thought about adding some more lye water but I'd have no clue how much now, as there's no way to tell how much lye got wasted. I also put my bowl on a double boiler to heat the oils in the hope that that would help them thicken, but that didnt work either. Please help! I dont want to throw such expensive and precious ingredients away (I wouldnt even know how to safely dispose of them!).

    • @tellervo.
      @tellervo.  Місяць тому +1

      Hi, I'm so sorry you're having trouble! If the batter on the blender is thickening there is a chance all of it can thicken but it will probably take a very long time. It's difficult to help when there is no way to know how much lye was left in the container. One thing that you could try is to make a small batch of a 50% lye solution and add a very small amount, like a spoonful, to the soap batter and blend for a long time, see what happens, add another spoonful, blend and keep going until you reach trace. It's not the best, since you won't know how much lye you need and there is a risk of adding too much. If you'd get the soap to trace this way you'd need to be extra cautious with it and test the pH to make sure it isn't lye heavy. Better luck next time!😊
