He's explained this on his twitch channel. It's not so much he dislikes the song, he just doesn't think it fits with the setting. He also says he much prefers to listen to remixes of the song rather than the original.
@@Critoxyn I mean it's understandable why; Aquatic Ambiance is a very calming, relaxing song; kinda makes you want to close your eyes and relax a bit.
When you compare that to Lockjaw's Saga, it has a sense of Claustrophobia; with the song taking place in the ship's hold, which is rapidly filling with water. It sounds more unnerving, but also more adventurous, to help you want to push onwards and succeed. There was also originally a track planned for serene water levels; but DKC2 didn't have anything similar to that, as a result, the music was repurposed and retooled for a different level design. Which means; Aquatic Ambiance essentially led to the creation of "Stickerbrush Symphony." So, it has that going for it.

I've been playing this game for decades now and I've never even heard about that warp between level one and two. That seriously takes you through like half the game.
Yeah, apparently it's because that screen is the only part of the map where the paths aren't all straight lines. The corners act as level slots. Apparently it was fixed in later revisions, or at least made much harder to pull off.
The only time I saw warps was in DKC2 and DKC3. I never knew it was in the very first DKC game. That blows my mind!

The one that keeps going up in pitch? Same! I just played the game about two weeks ago, and just wanted it to keep increasing.
God I love those making of tapes. The hosts were all 90s hype and wacky, using all the energy they could muster, and the guys at rare were so deadpan by comparison I found very amusing.

I actually know about that speed running trick. When I was a kid we had this game in my day care and there was this girl who was able to do it flawlessly. The rest of us tried, but somehow she was the only one able to do it. That takes me back.

16:00 Might be my favorite level. I remember always looking forward to it, when I was a kid, because of its atmosphere. The music, the design, the way it starts off clear and the weather gets worse as you get further in, etc. It's a pretty basic level, otherwise, but it has a great feel to it.
Person: "Hey Jon, what do you want on your pizza?"
Jon: "DID I MENTION HOW INFERIOR DONKEY KONG IS IN THIS GAME!?"
Since Jon does not explain this, what he did was a wrong warp. When a single character is moving on the map, you can trick the game into making you enter a stage by pressing A, B, X, Y or Start on the moment to enter that corner. It only works for world 1 and it skips the first, second, and most of the third world. Its a very common speedruning tactic, but the fact jon effectively skirts the issue about it(He calls it the actual second level.) is kind of the main issue. I figured he do it just for a gag, but he just skipped two entire worlds and acted like nothing happened.
I imagine he'll mention it or roll things back next episode, but I'll admit that was a little off-putting; I'm familiar with the speedrun of the game, but there's a fair few people even in the comments who have never seen the game before. I can't say an off season April fools style gag is the best way to introduce it to them, especially from a channel that so thoroughly shows off everything about a game. Thanks for putting the info out there, glad someone in the comments had the confused newbies backs!
When I was just a toddler trying to play this, I thought that walking into the empty Banana Hoard made you lose a life. Because what else would incredibly disheartening music and DK's expression of utter lament mean?

This game has no right looking as gorgeous as it does. It’s so uncommon for that era to have a game that feels so unbound by the technical limitations of the time, but this is a complete vision

Oh man, I had no supplementary material for this game, so I had to figure out everything on my own, including where the bonus stages were, that you could Start Select out of a completed stage (found it on accident somehow), and what the heck those exclamation points meant! I also had absolutely no idea you didn't have to complete the bonus stages, so I always finished every single one unless I got a save barrel after one earlier in the stage, and always finished all bonus games in the entire stage before finishing it! I also did a fair amount of the companion bonus stages until I realized they weren't linked to the actual stages so they wouldn't count for that stage's secrets. To think that I grew up in what is most likely the last generation to ever have to deal with a problem like that!
A lot of games when they were put on Virtual Console were subject to the updated laws regarding flashing effects and such that could cause epilepsy, as such they had to be changed. This is why some games took quite a while to put on the service back in the day.
This game needed an updated LP. Thank you Jon.
It's so weird that even though he's the main character that Donkey Kong is the worst character of the game and isn't even playable in the majority of the Donkey Kong Country trilogy.
At least Retrostudios didn't do him dirty.
Another weird trend is that any DK game with Dixie Kong as a main character ends up being excellent. DKC2, DKC3, and Tropical Freeze are arguably the best games in the series and are also are the only ones to feature Dixie.
@@Alex_Off-Beat Well from what I've seen DKC3 is kind of considered to black sheep of the trilogy. Don't have many major problems with it, but that's what i usually see when it comes to that game.

3 is only "one of the best" because it still manages to be a little more matured and polished than 1. I'd put 3 way below Returns.
There's also a lot of people who think DKC3 is extremely underrated. I think most of the dislike comes from the poor sales of the game due to it being released at the very end of the SNES's life (after the N64 had come out), the really bad GBA port, and a few frustrating levels.
The amount of variety in the game is insane, every stage introduces a new gameplay element. Sure a couple of them were executed poorly but the majority of the game is great.

No it's not been retconned. Cranky is still treated as OG Donkey Kong. Sometimes when speaking in real-world terms that gets ignored, because the Donkey Kong name and character idea is distinct. But in-universe it's still true.

I'm 30 and I've never played Donkey Kong Country, so seeing Jon break this game and jump through so many hoops and levels felt confusing to follow.

I have a lot of sentiment with this game. It was my first Nintendo game that I got for my 7th birthday along with a GBA. I never played a sidescroller at that point in time, having only played arcade style games on the PS1, but once I learned how to play, I was hooked.
Well then. A ProtonJon LP of Donkey Kong Country.
I watched your friend MasaeAnela play it a little while back. I thought that I would check yours out now.
I see you took advantage of a trick to skip to Orang-Utan Gang. That...is actually my favorite level in DKC. It's not due to the asinine amount of secrets to find, but rather the sunset aesthetic and jungly environment. It's so nice to just simply romp through!
With that in mind, I should let you know that the original DKC is actually my favorite sidescroller game in the Donkey Kong series. Heck, it's my number three DK game in general, following DK64 and Donkey Kong Barrel Blast! I love the sense of immersion with DKC1, and the fact that DK himself is playable is nice, regardless of his weaknesses. I just love this game...
Even so, I am amused by your skill, Jon. I'll watch the rest of this LP.
I remember hugging every walls with barrels and jumping in every suspicious holes, fun times. What I don't remember is this stage order... Might be confusing it with 2.
Its kind of like doing Star Road in SMW, and then going back to do the rest you missed.
Oh yeah, Thanks. I was not sure since he went with it and did not go back in this episode. I'm most familiar with the early game since, beside 20-25 years ago, I don't think I completely finished the game again, only replayed the early stuff. I was also not aware of this trick so it's much confusing for my brain.

I distinctly remember smooshing my body against every wall in the many hours spent with this game on the GBA. This game is so formative for me but in retrospect the secrets are so laughably abysmal. Still, with no other responsibilities I knew this game's secrets inside and out as a child.
Man og DKC is so good. Has a lot of quirks but established the groundwork of the later DKC games, and I have a personal soft spot for it as it's a game I started out really bad at, originally playing on virtual console and using save states a lot, yet now I can go ahead and beat it in a sitting or two easily. This is gonna be a fun lp to watch Jon play through I can tell already.
When I feel like I need more control of my jumps I like to play as Donkey.
Hey Jon, did you know that there is a 3-up balloon at the end of Jungle Hijinxs? Get on the top point of the exit mountain with Rambi, jump as high as you can, and then dismount him at the apex of the jump.

When youve played these games for so long, and as many times as we have, you just know the location of the secrets. This may have been the very first video game I ever played with my uncle back in the nineties and early 2000s. So our goal was just beating levels. I learned some of the secrets from him, others you literally find by accident as you’re walking around with a barrel lol

A wee bit late, but it's so cool to see an LPer I've watched for so long play one of my favorite games. Love the DKC titles. And each one has its charms for me.
Regarding the question about Torchlight Trouble, I checked and versions like the SNES Classic and on NSO the all-white flash frame is straight up gone in those versions so it's only on the original carts.
Jon puts his personal spin on this game and I honestly can't tell if I should be surprised or that I should've saw this coming.
The Donkey Kong Country series is god-tier. I honestly love all 5 games in the series thus far.

Dkc 2 really got the team up balance perfect. In dkc1 Donkey’s upsides are niche while Diddy’s are incredibly universal. But 2 made dixie and Diddy’s strengths a lot more debatable on who’s better. While the average beginner might think Dixie is objectively better because her hover in a platformer makes her op, Diddy’s speed while doing just about everything makes everything but jumping easier. They even kept the idea of both kings holding the barrels opposite ways to complement this even further so you never really wanna just play one kong all the time. It really makes me get why Jirard the completionist is saving this for his final game. They really went out of their way to fine tune every little nitpick you could have about Dkc1.

All those Donkey Kong Country races are coming back to Jon but this time it'll be a slow and steady play thought.
