    Wow, this is such a useful comparison! On vocals, the duo's emulations had a hollowed-out sound, almost as though there was a phase issue or something. Very discouraging to hear an inferior sound coming from the mic that costs 50% more. I don't know that I could use any of those emulations. Meanwhile, the solo had several that sounded great to me.

      That's a great observation. I wonder if the phasing is actually some issue with the stereo correlation using both sides of the microphone. Because it appears that the duo recordings were in stereo.

      @@ErikHawk I did enjoy the comparison, and actually have an Edge Solo now. I was nervous that I'd be "missing features" by going with the Solo, but for my purposes, this video made it clear that, if anything, the Duo sounded worse for my applications, which made the decision easy!

    • @Mark-vv1dy

      @@theblowupdollsmusic They resist calling it a "stereo" mic since the two sources are never panned - the intention is always to sum them to mono through the modeling. But summing a stereo source to mono always risks exposing phase issues, and that's exactly what this sounds like to me. I'm playing the tracks as I type this, and it's glaringly obvious every time it switches to the Duo, because it suddenly goes from a nice-sounding mic job to a "student engineer"-sounding mic placement job. In fact, the back-and-forth was so regular that I had to scroll up when all of a sudden the second recording sounded much better - I thought "Wait, is one of the Duo's models actually good?" But then I scrolled up and discovered it was when they switched from one solo model straight to another solo model. I'd never pick any of those Duo sounds over a competent LDC, even a cheap one.

    I might be asking too much, but it seems to me the initial response of each mic wasn't considered that much. I find no other explanation why the sound changes so much between the two. I have an antelope interface, but I'm still not sure if I'll ever buy any of these...

    • @ErikHawk

      The two mics are a completely different design. One is a single diaphragm fixed cardioid pattern mono condenser, the other is a dual diaphragm stereo multi-pattern condenser. They sound different dry, but when used with the emulations they also sound different because the emulation software is working with a different sound to begin with.

      Yeah, and it's interesting that I had the Duo set sideways in the piano and then facing the capsule head on for the vocals. If anyone is interested in my experience with the Edge mic from before it came out till today, here it is. I bought the Edge mic when it was announced and waited over 6 months to receive it. The software wasn't finished and I couldn't really use it for another few months. Then I was told I couldn't use it at all in my DAW unless I paid more for the AFX2DAW software. I wasn't told I would have to pay extra to use this as the mic as advertised originally. I sent Antelope the adverts that existed when I bought the mic as evidence but they stuck to their guns. Sweetwater (where I bought the interface and mic) stopped selling Antelope Audio products because of bad customer service. Crap, I paid for the AFX2DAW software anyway (on sale) so I could use the mic inside my DAW. The supplied cable broke and I somehow got a replacement from Antelope through Sweetwater even though they had cut all ties. That cable broke as well so I had Gothem audio make me one from real quality cable and connectors. Still working like a champ. So far this sounds like a sob story but there is a reason why I went through all of this. The Edge mic is fucking incredible. This demo doesn't show what it can do because the guy isn't a real engineer and just plays one on TV. I'm not knocking him but it's obvious to anyone who knows. Most don't. I made my living as an studio engineer for many years always having several old and new tube mics to choose from. This mic is the shit. The good. All mics have a sweet spot and what you are trying to record might not live in it or what you are going for might have a cheaper mic work better for that vision. The Edge mic is a lot of mics so it can fit in places you would never expect. But I would be telling you none of this if the mic wasn't seriously good in many situations. It is fucking good and often magic. I mean better than old tube mic magic. With the right vocalist, set up correctly and with the right model, this mic is unbelievably transparent, huge, airy, and three dimensional. It sits in a mix like the mix owes it some money and it came to collect. It floats in it's own space transparent and full sized and without distractions. What you dream a U-47 will give you this blows that away because a U-47 also comes with added baggage that can't be gotten rid of. Distortion and while there is good distortion, there is also bad distortion and you don't know about it until it is gone. So buy this mic, learn how to mic someone and experiment with the models. None of them really sound like the originals (eh, they get close) but that isn't the point of my review. My point is, if you are only interested in magic and not authenticity, this is the mic. The Edge mic can produce magic. I have been told the Edge Duo is the same mic as my Edge mic but with a different look so if true, buy it. The other Antelope mics? No experience but for the price difference between the solo and the duo, just get the duo. Sometime a source sounds best in omni and sometimes figure 8. It's really like having 60 mics instead of 20.

    • @ErikHawk
      @ErikHawk  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for sharing your input Bobby! The takeaway here is that Edge is a great product and it's going to sound different, better or worse, on different sources and in different positions.

      @@ErikHawk The Edge mic sounds good on more sources than any other mic I ever used and sometimes it even sounds magical. You never know with this mic. Throw all your past experience out the window and try it on things you would never expect it to work on. It might work great.

    • @edgeguy99
      @edgeguy99 3 роки тому +1

      @@ErikHawk The Edge sounds good on more sources than any other mic I've ever used and I've owned and own great mics people lust after. The Edge is like having many mics covering a wide range. With different polar patterns it's like having 60 mics. Having two would be game changing and I don't toss that expression around. If Antelope developed an M-50 model, I would replace my orchestral SDCs and get another Edge. I may do it anyway. I'll probably do it. OK, I'm doing it. I've been thinking about it for weeks. I love my SDCs but they will only be missed under some situations. A stereo pair of Edge mics would be used in most situations and may even work in an orchestral recording. Once again, I don't expect them to work in that role but they will probably surprise me as so often happens.

    The crazy thing about microphones is the diaphragm, being upside gives a totally different capture, the lower part of the diaphragm will capture more low end (you’re neck and body ) so upside down it captures the highs and makes it more boxy sounding, every mic is like that, btw you didint record it in mono? Or did you have a different setting for a pick up pattern other then cardioid ?

    • @ErikHawk
      @ErikHawk  3 роки тому +1

      Solo is recorded in mono and Duo is recorded in stereo. Duo has a stereo output that's then decoded by the mic modeling software to create the mic models and pickup patterns. Wow, I've never heard about an upside down diaphragm producing a different sound. Obviously we do this in the studio all the time, mics might be positioned straight up and down, or upside down with a boom arm. So if this really is the situation, then I guess we should check out our large diaphragm mics in both positions to know what upside down versus right side up sounds like. Thanks for the tip!

    Thanks for the review. Antelope Audio is creating some great gear but their documentation and/or video tutorials are very much lacking. I've been looking at the Townsend Labs Sphere L22 and the Antelope Audio Edge Duo mics. The L22 of course works with any 2 input preamp, but this is the first time I see anywhere that the Edge Duo also does that. I did read the comments below and I get that they are optimized to work with Antelope Audio preamps, but this clarifies that you don't need their preamps for the modeling plugin to work. This is crucial because if I'm recording a project with the Duo and I have an Antelope Audio interface and later give the project to a friend who doesn't have the interface, they are still able to load up the plugin and tweak the mic emulation on their system, with or without Antelope Audio interface.
    I'm also looking at the Edge Go. I wish I could tell if the microphone needs to be plugged in to a computer in order for the plugin to work. (the mic modeling and all the preamp, compressor, etc emulations) I understand the mic has some processing power, so I get that without it being plugged in, the effects (emulations) will not be processed by the mic, but can they still be processed by the CPU (albeit, not exactly realtime?)
    Thanks for the review.

    • @ErikHawk
      @ErikHawk  5 років тому

      You're welcome. Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed the review. Just to be clear, the Edge Duo/Solo Emulations plug-in requires iLok authorization. You receive this authorization when you register your mic. If your friend doesn't have the iLok authorization he/she won't be able to run the plug-in. To my knowledge, the plug-in isn't for sale as a stand alone, since it's clear that Antelope wants you to use it with their audio interfaces. But as you point out, they're also pretty unclear about all this, so maybe their approach will change in the future.

      @@zanza_the_rewolverine Yeah, driver issues are a huge concern. As I always say, if an audio interface doesn't have solid and up to date drivers it's useless. Well, as I point out in the review, the mics and the mic modelling software will work with any audio interface. You could try the Antelope interface and return it if it doesn't work with your system. RME interfaces definitely have a great reputation.

      @ErikHawk  4 роки тому

      @@gaganbakana Great question! Yeah Edge Solo is about $500 and ML-1 is about $800. I haven't personally tried the ML-1 but Slate makes some great products. I would read the reviews online from end users. It looks like the ML-1 might be a better build, and this is what you get for the added dollars. If price is a concern, remember that you don't have to get a modelling mic. A trusty AT2020 for $99 with a good pop filter and reflection baffle (around $50) can get the job done. With a clean signal recorded then do a great mix. Half of this is about the technique, the technology helps but without good technique it doesn't much matter what gear you buy. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AT2020--audio-technica-at2020-cardioid-condenser-microphone

    Hey Erik thanks for such great review, but after listening to this review in my opinion the edge Solo sounds better the only reason I would try the Duo is for the different patterns, but the Solo is Very full and in your face presence have more Body to it clean and warm sounds much better, on the other hand the Duo Sounds Tin like it's inside of a whole with a very weak presense and sounds a bit fake, when I listen to this I'm in love with the Edge Solo on vocals it's superb, wondering if I'm the only one hearing that.

    • @ErikHawk
      @ErikHawk  3 роки тому

      You're welcome, thanks for watching and commenting. The Solo is excellent bang for the buck. As a mic all by itself it sounds better than the Duo by itself. Though I do think that the Duo with its software emulation sounds better, and of course the pickup patterns are great. But for simply a single diaphragm vocal mic, yeah the Solo is a good choice, with or without its software emulation.

  • @PavolBrezina

    Comentary that this mics works with most standard audio interfaces is not correct. If you want to use it for modeling, you need Antelope device, no matter if you want to change mic in realtime or in postroduction with plugin. With different audio card you receive different color of Edge or Solo. For modeling you need Antelope preamps

    • @ErikHawk
      @ErikHawk  5 років тому

      Really good point. I have no doubt that the mics and software models will sound best with the Antelope Audio interfaces. This is the ideal situation. But that said, they do function fine with any standard audio interface that has a mic input with phantom power. I think this is really important for everybody to understand. However, as you said, the resulting color is going to be different. I'd be very curious to hear how much of a difference using a third party audio interface affects the sound of the mic models. Is it tiny, like the difference between two vintage mics of the same model, or is it a huge difference that renders the software models useless? What do you think?

    • @mozhigh
      @mozhigh 5 років тому +1

      @@ErikHawk depending on the preamp, it could go either way. the stronger character, the worse modeling results. but actually discrete and other antelope interface preamps sound different too, tbh. i think the ideal situation would be with the discrete interface, because they have interface bundled with mics as best bargain for modeling.

    ONE THING I FOUND FLAWED IN YOUR VIDEO....YOU RECORDED THE DUO IN STEREO WITHOUT CHANGING THE POLAR PATTERN TO THE FIGURE EIGHT EMULATION.

    • @ErikHawk
      @ErikHawk  Рік тому

      Unless I missed something... there are no pick up patterns on the mic itself. Rather, you just record its stereo outputs and then apply the emulation plug-in to these outputs. The plug-in handles all the emulation processing based on the Duo's dual output signals. This from the manual, Pg. 9, "Recording and monitoring Edge Duo as a dual-membrane condenser mic. In this case, you will record and monitor two concurrent mono inputs, one coming from each membrane. They will sound slightly different in tone and volume, due to the physical distance between the membranes and the performer. You may have to compensate with individual gain adjustments for each membrane." That's pretty much it, apply the plug-in emulation to the stereo recording and Voila!

I do the very best that I can to make sure all my audio is clear and pristine. Nothing less will do.
