Coming from a digital art background, “relinquishing control” as you put it, is why I find such delight in playing on a physical piece of paper. Thank you so much for reminding me of the fun that can be had touching pen and paint to paper.
Thanks for sharing your fab first page sketch. Not sure my day was demanding as yours sounds Toby, but sadly we didn’t visit firstborn in Leeds this weekend, due to Storm Bert. Instead I sketched a couple of tree trunks as prep for my Drawing & Watercolour class on Thursday & watched “The Theory of Everything” on TV.
I do like that you mentioned the squinting bit. It's something everyone says to do to remove detail and see the values and shapes. But it does hurts to do it a lot and I find I end up doing something poorly because the pain makes me start to rush and also to stop looking at the reference. I don't know the cure, but at least now I just stop when I notice it, and just pause with my eyes closed for a minute.
