It's easy to understand why there weren't more like him. Understanding what it is in a person that let's them break free of fear is a much more complicated thing. It's easy to stand back and pass judgement on people for not taking more action, but when you know your action might save a life of one of the oppressed at the expense of the lives of your entire family the decision becomes hard.

Beate Wagner: you got it wrong cause most Germans back then were pure evil. Oskar was German but he sure was a minority there. Why? The vast majority of Germans knew what was happening and did nothing. As a matter of fact they saw their Jewish neighbors disappearing still voted and supported Hitler and his minions. The crimes committed by Germans committed were just too horrendous as they not only massacred Jews but handicapped children too. PS: I do feel that the new generation of Germans are kinder and definitely not like the old Germans.

Years ago I remember reading that it was said a man once boasted that he would go to Heaven because he was a regular churchgoer. And Jesus Christ responded
"What matters isn't how often you go to church, but how you treat others."
You don't have to be religious, you don't have to be perfect. All you need is to have to be compassionate.

I don't think people really grasp what that man did and risked. A man that had no ties or owed anything to those people. He risk his fortune, his life and most important his family for a stranger. Then you look at New York when a woman is getting robbed or worse people act like their blind, sad. One man can go against a nation but yet most people wouldn't help thier neighbor but uet we call are self civil. Gandhi, MLK, Schindler and many more are excellent role models but Hitler and the SS is googled more and researched more then all three of those men combined. It crazy that crazy fascinates most people. Differently a F.U.W

This is a man, who not only sold what he got to bear the cross but also ready to step up to.
    May God bless Herr Schindler.
I feel so tiny to this great man.

    • @janesgems7

That's how I like to see Germany, my friend. The stark fact is, ANY country could have ended up with Nazis in power, all it took was a series of events....Germany was destroyed after WW1, along came a charismatic man who offered to make their country great again, they backed him....then when they finally realised what he was, it was too late.
Hatred and fear are universal ....look at Putin and what he's doing, look at the slave trade - slavery still exists, to this day. I remember this quote from the Odessa File...'there are no evil people, just individuals.'

Viktor E. Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning" informs us that if we lost everything in our life.. the only thing left is.. our freedom to choose.
Oskar, defined himself by his freedom to choose, even with all the other choices and luxuries he had. Sure, he was a deeply flawed man. Yet, his actions redeemed him.. and showed a flawed yet heroic man, being a human being.. recognising the plight of his fellow humans.. beyond ethnicity and religion.
Heroism takes many forms. It is.. easy to commit heroism when the conditions are right. It is impossible and difficult to commit heroism in near impossible circumstances. And yet, he did what he did as his choice of consciousness. Truly, a stalwart hero of his time.

It's not, maybe one in a million would do something like this. Most people are easily controlled by fear as our current political and societal situation proves.

"For this reason, We decreed for the children of Isrā’īl that whoever kills a person not in retaliation for a person killed, nor (as a punishment) for spreading disorder on the earth, is as if he has killed the whole of humankind, and whoever saves the life of a person is as if he has saved the life of the whole of humankind. Certainly, Our messengers have come to them with clear signs. Then, after all that, many of them are there to commit excesses on the earth".
