Distemper can absolutely cause loss of fear of humans and seeking them out. visual signs of distemper versus rabies in raccoons is that a raccoon afflicted with rabies may actually act more aggressive, while a raccoon afflicted with distemper may appear aggressive but actually be more disoriented and less afraid of humans.

That’s what I need! I noticed his eyes are unconscious, meaning the rabies already took over the entire brain. The raccoon doesn’t know what happened or doesn’t have nocturnal time clock inside his brain. In third stage, which is early for that raccoon in this video, it is most likely going to charge as a zombie, so as his unconscious eyes, the raccoon is most likely to chase and bite, thinking you are his/her food. That’s why this raccoon is like this. Zombie raccoon is no longer eat foods and drink liquids, therefore, it just being unconscious into death.

If you see the raccoon during broad daylight, that’s rabies. Rabid animals loses the ability to do nocturnal, therefore it is easy to spot rabies. You better look closely on his eyes. Distemper is very difficult to diagnose on wild animals and it requires multiple blood tests to make an determination of the condition of the wild animals. It also requires neurological exam to rule out other ailments before determining the diagnosis. This one is not distemper, from what I know from the veterinarian, it’s definitely rabies.

I've been a wildlife rehabber for quite a few years I've raised close to 500 raccoons throughout the years so I have an incredible amount of experience, knowledge, and education. I am very familiar with distemper and all of its symptoms I couldn't tell you how many times I've gotten calls people claiming there's a raccoon in their yard that has rabies never once in all the years I've been dealing with wildlife have I ever encountered rabies in a raccoon it is extremely rare. I posted some statistic in one of the comments I've made here but I'll repeat them again for you in my state the last documented case of rabies in a raccoon or any other type of animal was in 1960. In the United States since 1990 there have only been 31 that's caused by rabies. 8 of those cases were caused from a dog bite. And the other 22 cases were caused from being bitten by a bat. Part of my education and training getting my wildlife rehabbers license is knowing all the signs and symptoms how to treat and how to contain distemper. As I stated earlier in this comment I encourage you to fact check everything I've relayed to you. A big part of being a wildlife rehabber is educating people about all different types of wildlife, and making sure that any information I provide is factual and documented.

Rabies is so weird (and horrible). One second they're fitting/seizing, the next walking in circles and biting the air. Then falling over like they're drunk and don't know where they are and then in an instant they will snap out of it and seem to get angry and walk after you. I wonder if anyone can tell me if it affects humans in the same way.
Iirc, rabid humans thrash, sieze, hallucinate, and go into delirium, but the source I read (Rabid, by Bill Wasik and Monica Murphy) claimed that rabid humans are generally not aggressive.
This is distemper, the type dogs can contract. All of the racoons in our region had it rage thru the population. The game wardens came out and said "if you see one, kill it immediately". So 2 years ago, it was awful 😭

This raccoon has rabies. The showing of the teeth shows he's foaming at the mouth. Their throat goes into spasms and they can't swallow their own saliva or it causes terrible spasm and pain. He wasn't lying down he was having convulsions and short-circuiting in the brain because of the viral infection. It would have been more merciful to have just killed it quickly, plus it would protect other animals like neighborhood dogs and also neighborhood children from getting near it and getting bit.
I agree, Rabies is such a terrible infection. It would have been better to mercy kill the raccoon then to let them live in any more in pain and suffering. And to further spread illness. It’s sad how wildlife contract rabies and have to just deal with it until it eventually kills them. But I guess that’s life.
Please ppl don't mess with animals that act aggressive or strange or that look sick. Rabies is not something to fool around with. I live in the country and we just shoot them but clubbing them with a bat could cause infected bodily fluids to come in contact with you.

First clue... it's daytime. Racoons are mainly nocturnal, so if they are up and active during the day their is usually something wrong.

Rabies is so weird (and horrible). One second they're fitting/seizing, the next walking in circles and biting the air. Then falling over like they're drunk and don't know where they are and then in an instant they will snap out of it and seem to get angry and walk after you. I wonder if anyone can tell me if it affects humans in the same way.
Iirc, rabid humans thrash, sieze, hallucinate, and go into delirium, but the source I read (Rabid, by Bill Wasik and Monica Murphy) claimed that rabid humans are generally not aggressive.
This is distemper, the type dogs can contract. All of the racoons in our region had it rage thru the population. The game wardens came out and said "if you see one, kill it immediately". So 2 years ago, it was awful 😭

Imagine what his reaction if the raccoon charges at him in full speed just for a bite.
This raccoon has rabies. The showing of the teeth shows he's foaming at the mouth. Their throat goes into spasms and they can't swallow their own saliva or it causes terrible spasm and pain. He wasn't lying down he was having convulsions and short-circuiting in the brain because of the viral infection. It would have been more merciful to have just killed it quickly, plus it would protect other animals like neighborhood dogs and also neighborhood children from getting near it and getting bit.
I agree, Rabies is such a terrible infection. It would have been better to mercy kill the raccoon then to let them live in any more in pain and suffering. And to further spread illness. It’s sad how wildlife contract rabies and have to just deal with it until it eventually kills them. But I guess that’s life.

Please ppl don't mess with animals that act aggressive or strange or that look sick. Rabies is not something to fool around with. I live in the country and we just shoot them but clubbing them with a bat could cause infected bodily fluids to come in contact with you.
