I’ve always appreciated Coltrane… but have noticed many people saying how ‘Love Supreme’ is probably his greatest work and possibly the greatest Jazz album of all time. On more than one occasion people have spoken about this album with Holy regard… In Devine terms, as if it literally helps them understand God. Is there a suggested listening path I should take to properly understand that album? The playing seems extraordinary and sounds great and I definitely appreciate it… but is there here something/s in particular that make that album stand out among his and other great works and possibly the greatest album ever? Is it because of his point in life at that time or his notes to the listener or something sonically that people are really appreciating specific to LS?

A love supreme is like no other coltrane record and its what got me listening to him, and try as i have I've been unable to find another record of his like it. Crescent and Ole are similar but don't have the level of composition or planning. A few years after 1st listening to it I started buying his other records and found that I'm not a huge fan of his records on the Impulse label, that was after a lot of work. You also have his earlier Prestige period, followed by the Atlantic recordings, and of course there are others, most notably Blue Train and all of the records of Miles Davis that he did.
So to sum it up, check out Ole and crescent, maybe africa Brass too, but you must listen to Blue Train, coltranes sound, Giant steps, Lush life and there are loads more. Plus the Miles records, Kinda Blue, relaxing, milestones , Round about midnight. A love Supreme is like no other record By coltrane or anyone else and listening to it can be a life changing spiritual experience.

You can listen and pick your favorite. Listen to it all. Read about the band and the man himself, and you decide. There's a book about the recording of ALS that tells all about it. ALS is a clear full-LP suite which includes a prayer of recommitment to music as service to God and humanity, written by the man himself. The phrasing of these words are played on the saxophone in the final movement, "Psalm." You can read the words and hear the syllables in the phrases he plays. It's an overt statement of love and spirituality and that's why we love it. Personally, my favorite Coltrane album is Crescent.
