Don't remember exactly when I started. But in my 20s, I used to walk and pray in Mt Hope Cemetery in Rochester NY. It's a historic Cemetery, with the burial plots of Susan B Anthony, Frederick Douglas, Buffalo Bill Cody's son.
Steve, It was great to watch you meet with Kurt. The passion for graves that you two share is an inspiration for others who might be interested in pursuing the hobby.
Our mother liked to spend hours with our grandmother at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach, Ca. So we played there a lot. Recently revisited after more than 50 years. I remembered it was near the fence by the train tracks. Now the singer Jenni Rivera is interred there. She grew up in Long Beach.
I came from a very large Family and experienced a lot of death:quite early on. My fascination with cemeteries came from starting out seeking the resting places of those relatives lost. From there, just realized how much I loved wandering around cemeteries 👌
Hooray for the Scholastic Book Club. My lifelong admiration of Harriet Tubman is due to a book I ordered in third grade, "Runaway Slave." Great video, Steve. Thanks!
I know I was young (8 or 9), but we would go with Mom and Step Dad to visit my Grandparent's graves. One time while wandering about while the parents tended to the graves I came across one that said "Brat" and then listed the person's name. I was so upset that they would put that on their grave that he was a brat so I ran to tell my Mom. She told me that meant "Brother" in Polish, both Mom and Step Dad had a good laugh on that one.
I like how Kurt discussed that he likes to visit the graves of "the good the bad and the ugly". they may have passed on, but it's the closest you can get to someone you may have never met but may know a lot about their career or personal life, whether said deceased person likes it or not!
👍Great interview Steve!👍 Kurt is a very interesting young man and so well versed in his knowledge of presidential history. It's so cool that he "inspired" you to visit the presidential gravesites while you were on this massive roadtrip!!! So glad you were able to connect with each other and hope to see more interviews like this!! It's fun to watch when you can collab with other "gravehunters" out there! Looking forward to more content from this "trip of a lifetime"!!!
Wow! Nice to meet new people around the US! The cemeteries back East are so old! I lived in South Carolina & you could read a lot of history there. I started my interest in cemeteries as a teen.- loved history. Hello to Jim! Thanks Steve! 👍
Excellent video Steve! It's great seeing the younger generation interested in the Presidents who have passed on and visiting their grave sites and keeping their memories alive just as you are Steve.
Ty Steve..nice video with Kurt. My Family always did cemetery's walk just cause. We were board and just went for a walk and all older ones around us. My Grandma would tell stories of course
I was 7-8 years old when I visited my first cemetery. My father was a monument designer and I used to go with him and help him with his work. I would help him take graphite pencil rubbing of the stones he designed and help him put gold leaf in the letters. I learned to appreciate the art of grave designs and the history of the graves we visited. I enjoy visiting the famous graves online. It reminds me of exploring cemeteries with my dad and I appreciate the lives and histories of those who have passed on.
Wow! Imagine a young man is at first interested in the Presidents of our country and it's history but for him to be a expert! This is so cool, I wish more people would take interest in our presidents and history.
Kurt is absolutely a fascinating man to talk to and learn about. His story is not too different than a lot of ours in terms of visiting grave sites, but the way he’s able to tell these stories, and his absolute passion and love for this hobby, and US Presidents brings hope into people like us to continue this hobby. I started visiting grave sites at age 11, in 2009, with the Lincoln Family in Springfield, Illinois, at Oak Ridge Cemetery. For Presidents it was of course Abraham Lincoln was the first, and after visiting Washington DC in 2010, and visiting the grave sites of Washington, Kennedy, Taft and Wilson, and like with Kurt, I asked my Dad if we could also try to visit every Presidential grave site, and in 2015 with the graves of Reagan and Nixon, and then with the grave of Bush Sr. in 2019, I had done it. I’m so glad you got to meet Kurt personally, and someday I will. Awesome video, Steve. I am so glad you’ve joined our ranks in this quest, and I have to thank Kurt for introducing me to your channel!
Hi Joe, I agree about Kurt and the same goes for you. You both have such amazing memories for facts and interesting history trivia. I hope viewers will also visit your UA-cam channel and watch the interview you did with Kurt. Thanks for the kind words and for sharing with us!
Nice story hi Kurt. Kurt meeting Steve would be a thrill. He's the gold standard of grave hunters and You tube vloggers. Nice to hear you two visit I enjoyed it.
My parents brought me to the funerals of friends and family as a very young boy, which included the trip to the cemetery for burials. After that, I would visit old colonial graveyards, looking for the oldest burials. We then moved next to a Victorian Garden cemetery with lavish monuments and tombs and by age 10 was considered morbidly weird. I still am weird with a preference for over the top memorialization.
It will be cool if a video of just the presidential graves is made after you have aired them all. Thanks for recording your journey, Steve! Best wishes to you and yours!
Hi Steve ! Very interesting vlog. Nice to meet people who have the same interests . Kurt is certainly an accomplished speaker on historical president's graves .! Thanks for all your hard work and dedication ! Take care! Deborah.. Canada.
My sister was killed in a car crash when I was almost four years old. I remember some of the funeral but definitely remember the graveside part. My mother took me to visit her grave and to walk around the cemetery quite often. She also took me to other relatives graves. She wanted me to know where they were buried so they would not be forgotten. A few years back, I googled famous Hollywood graves. I found Jordan the Lion first then your channel.
Steve youll remember me from mentioning my name in the Emil sitka grave visit thank you for that.I was in 3rd grade 1979 i was so interested in president my 3rd grade teacher and seen all president libraries except clinton Bush im still loving the history of president
I would a lot of times make my mom stop at cemeteries when I was a kid. The older the better. One of my best memories was when I was cleaning the cut grass off of the tombstones. A sweet little old lady called me over to her tugboat of a car and said thank you. I was cleaning off military tombstones and her Dad was in the military
I have only visited one President's grave, JFK's. Been in Ford's Theater and across the road were President Lincoln died. As a history buff without a degree, I have just 61 years of life learnings to fall back on, it does me simply fine. I came late to loving graveyards, around 22 or 23 years of age I would think, will never stop loving them till my body is itself laid to rest at some point in time, have a great week!
I'm almost done reading Kurt's book and highly recommend it to anyone on this site. It's an adventure to read and I've been cheering him on with each chapter toward the finish line. We both became fascinated with presidential tidbits and trivia in Elementary school, so this book caught my interest right away. Presidential history, family adventure, and cemetery sleuthing - Great combo! Side note: Even though he's in Rhode Island and I'm in California, both Kurt and I visited the Adams graves early in life because they were short jaunts from trips to see his uncle/my aunt. Once I read that, I was hooked on the rest of his journey!
Hi Steve. So happy you made it to my home state of Rhode Island ❤️🇺🇸. I have always loved cemeteries. I find them so peaceful and there is so much history in each and every cemetery. My paternal grandparents, Aunts, Cousin and many many friends are buried at St Ann’s In Cranston, RI. Love your videos ❤️❤️❤️
Happy Father's Day Steve this was a really interesting video today and I hope you have a very good day and a nice week be safe stay healthy take care of
At the age of six I visited the cemetery on the other side of the rail road tracks of my youth not knowing anybody buried there I would visit those on the day of their burial this continue to the age of 11
This was a wonderful video Steve you meet some amazing people on this channel. I thank you for everything that you do for your channels and i hope you keep doing for as long as you can because i really your channels.
My Father being the Patriarch of the Family did a lot Eulogies for Family members and Friends. So he did a lot of graveside eulogies. We have an old cemetery in Fort Collins, Colorado that dates back to the 1700s. We used to walk around looking at the graves. So we started doing that when I was around 5 or 6 years old. We also have a really interesting cemetery in Loveland, Colorado, where I live. This cemetery has a main road going through the middle of the cemetery, so there cemetery is on both sides of the road. There are also a lot of really old gravesites as well. Y’all are just amazing, visiting graves as you do. Thank You for another great video, Steve. Happy Father’s Day Steve. Blessings to You and Jim.
Quite an enjoyable video Steve, thank you for sharing with us. Just goes to show you meet the most interesting people in sometimes the most strangest of place. Great series by the way Stave. Be safe, be well and of course be careful....
Hi Steve! Jason here! I was 10 yo. When me and my family would go to Covington Ga.to visit my granny and there was a large cemetery around the corner from her house ...me and my siblings would go to and check out the old graves. many unknown civil war soldiers there... and I've been hooked ever since..🪦⚰️
My dad's family is/was from Massachusetts, and I've been to Rhode Island once while visiting out there. It was a family history quest in 1999 around Warren RI where numerous relatives once lived and are buried, particularly St Marys Cemetery. Highlight of my trip!
Steve it is wounderful that you are doing a road trip and i heard you say in your video that it was your 5th Anniversary doing youtube so I wanted to say Happy 5th Anniversary and that I have learned so much about this video always looking forward to seeing new content
I first began an interest in gravesites when I was 9. Had never been to a cemetary until 1966 when my great grandfather, a WW1 vet passed away. Been fascinated ever since. Great video guys! Rainy day here in Appleton, WI so binge watching you today Steve!!!
We use to go stone rubbing in Girl Scouts. I was always amazed at the age and most of the gravesites were in Morgan’s Point near San Jacinto battlefield in La Porte Texas. This young man is motivated. That’s nice.👍😻
Steve, was wondering if when you get time would you visit (if you haven’t yet) Totie Feilds resting place…I remember her being a very funny comedian…love your channel, commentary, and your all around great personality….
i used to jogging i the cemetery every morning, when i worked for the summer on the east coast. it was comforting in some strange way. i was 17 just remembered that. This channel gives us a look into the past in the best way.
The first funeral I attended was in 1961 when I was 6 years old & it was for my paternal grandfather, William Allen Hutson. He lived in Atlanta, Ga & he lay in state at his home. The funeral was at the church, White Plains Baptist Church on Hwy 124 West between Braselton & Jefferson, GA, where he attended when younger & my extended family continue to worship there. The cemetery is the final resting place of numerous family members. Back then it was a regular thing to attend family funerals & also of friends, but today's generation has gotten away from all of that & that is sad, as they have lost that connection to family history. My Mother, Johnnie Phillips Hutson, passed away on May 16, 2022 & was 97 years old & not all of her great grandchildren or nieces & nephews attended, even those who lived close by.
My first experience with Cemeteries and Mortuaries was 49 years ago when I was 11 years old and I was allowed to go along with my father to make funeral arrangements for my Grandfather including picking out caskets and grave sight. I really found it quite fascinating and have done it many times since..... I have felt it was "my Purpose in life" to help family members move on to the Next experience....
My cousin and me went to Johnny Cash's and June Carter's grave but the one I'm looking forward to going to see the most is Elvis Presley going to Graceland and visiting his grave that's the day I'm looking for I'm a big fan of his soul to pay my respects to the man that I think it was the greatest entertainer of all times means everything to me you take care Steve and God bless
With Curt, I love how he was able to turn his obsession into a profession. Hopefully, his sister took notice. As for me, I'm not sure I was all that interested in cemeteries per se, but for some reason Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis grabbed a lot of my attention. One President and three vice presidents are buried there, and I can't imagine any other cemetery where there are that many presidents and vice presidents combined are buried. In addition, though I didn't see the grave John Dillinger for those people who think politicians keep company with that sort of human being. But, there was one well known poet buried on a hill side, and a well known author who is President Harrison's neighbor, as well as Eli Lilly as I recall. I was there when the Eli Lilly Company ran into controversy. By the way, Steve, my math tells me that you averaged one presidential site per day across the whole USA. I still find that amazing. One last thing, from a different type of celebrity. My grandparents and aunt are laid to rest in the same section as Green Bay Packers founder and head coach Curly Lambeau, for those who want to know how the football stadium got its name. Also interred in the mausoleum are my parents. One word of warning on the use of landmarks. We could always figure out where my grandparent's grave was because of where it was with respect to the chapel they had there. After many years with a chapel in the mausoleum they tore down the chapel, and finding my grandparent's graves became much more difficult. It was almost easier to find Lambeau's grave and work my way from there. Trees get chopped down, buildings get removed, and if we use those as landmarks to find graves, it might not always work.
I never really thought about it but I find it fascinating that there is whole separate world involving the presidents from activities to different famous sites I think it would be great if you could do that because I enjoy your channel and the work that you do so I encourage you to visit the Presidents for us! 💐
Hello I love what you do going on road trips all over the states wow go for it and enjoy it. Did you visit a cemetery in Cleveland Ohio? that cemetery I remember watching on video it was a hard place to get into because of weird visiting hours of the U.S. President who is buried there. A very elaborate grave site. I forgot the president who is buried in there?
Well I started when I was 15 believe it or not that's why I learned how to drive my father told me that there was no way I could kill anybody there. He said to me do you know how many people are dead in here. And I replied no Dad how many and he said all of them. But yes and from then on I would take my dogs walking into cemeteries and they all enjoyed it very much. I find it to be very peaceful even now I go up the road and I go to the cemetery and take long walks. It's a pretty safe place you know.
Very awesome video Steve ! Im getting caught up on my videols and its taking over two hours to get caught up from over night into morning ! After this video will get on Twitter watch some of my DVR and then lie down for awhile ! Going out for mexican on Tuesday and thrift stores two of them I think ! Depends on how much time Linda has since shes quit her job shes been busy with family grandkids gardening canning and taking her husband to the doctors I guess !
Wow, I didn't realize you were going all the way to the East Coast... I'm in Massachusetts. There is a lot to see here, and in the New England area. Mt Auburn Cemetery is a place I'm sure you would enjoy. People from all around the world come to visit the Cemetery. I hope you have a wonderful trip, Steve!
Never been to any presidential graves but I spend alot of time in our local cemetery. I go every holiday, the birthdays, and the day my parents died and put flowers on their graves. While I'm there I put flowers on my grandmothers, grandfathers, and one of my great grandmother's graves.
Steve l love that story Steve you are role model l am proud of you you passed on many things to many people you should go to original grave of President Lincoln he was moved because someone try to get his body god blessing upon both of you this is historical
I started visiting graves with my mother when Iwas six. We would take red poppies and have a picnic at my great grandfather's grave in Eugene. This continued every year.
Hi Steve I'm glad your doing amazing I still watch every video you make and still very much enjoy it. Been going through so major depression to the point I was thinking about ending my own life husband had me admitted for 4 days at the hospital
My first time was a visit to Yosemite Valley cemetery around 10 yrs of age (1960), because of the many floods and harsh weather it needed restoration work, you should put this on you list of places to visit
My future goals are to visit all the President's final resting places. I've only been to Arlington and visited Presidents Taft and Kennedy. For me, I believe Presidents Reagan and Lincoln will probably be my favorites. But actually, after seeing them in person, like you have, I might change my mind about who is my favorite.
Oh you were in Albany New York to see Chester Arthur at Albany Rural? My neck of the woods, my grandparents are buried there. It's a beautiful place. This was so interesting!
I have not, but I would like to! I met Doris Kearns Goodwin in 2016, Eric Foner in 2019, and Candice Millard in 2022. I also attended a talk by David McCullough in 2008 but did not get to meet him.
My grandmother took me to cemeteries when I was 10.We lived in Greenville Kentucky. She Would take us on weekends to different ones visit and explore. It was a history lesson for us sometimes. My stepdad continued doing it when we moved to Southern Indiana. He loved older cemeteries we did our share of walking .I still like them today .I live in northern Indiana and tere is a big cemetery not too far from where we live that is one of the largest in our state. In our town we have ghost stories on Halloween and once a year tere is a tour of who's who that died in the cemetery. Like the big shots of the past.

We use to go stone rubbing in Girl Scouts. I was always amazed at the age and most of the gravesites were in Morgan’s Point near San Jacinto battlefield in La Porte Texas. This young man is motivated. That’s nice.👍😻
@Dale Drake this was 1972, don’t think they knew much. The port of Houston moved the cemetery years later.
Thank you!
I usually just visit graves of country music artists unless I’m on a ghost tour.
Very interesting it’s amazing how people have the love of cemeteries and history very cool Steve
another great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Steve, was wondering if when you get time would you visit (if you haven’t yet) Totie Feilds resting place…I remember her being a very funny comedian…love your channel, commentary, and your all around great personality….
Like Kurt I started at 7. Visiting presidential homes and graves
Neat. Quite a few early starters!
I have been to 2 presidential grave sites Zachary Taylor and John F. Kennedy
Happy Father's Day, Steve
Thanks Sandy!
i used to jogging i the cemetery every morning, when i worked for the summer on the east coast. it was comforting in some strange way. i was 17 just remembered that. This channel gives us a look into the past in the best way.
jog not jogging
I was late boomer, 30's?!?! It's history! It's like any other historical building or battle fields!
So sorry for your loss Dan. Thanks for sharing these memories with us.
Fun Fact the Adams was the first presidential family to move in the White House
Hi Steve congrats on your 5 years on UA-cam keep up with the good work, like joining you on your travels ! ❤️🙏
Thanks so much Mary!
My 8th grade trip to Washington DC we went to the Arlington cemetery to find our Military relatives.
Yes, Johnny, June and Elvis are all very moving to visit. Enjoy your trip to Graceland!
I started visiting cemetaries like both of you around 7 or 8 when we were living in Europe at the time. Very interesting gravesites i saw.
Cool. Maybe we aren't as unusual as I was thinking we were. :-)
@@TheGraveyardChannel No not at all . I think we are quite normal .
i was 7 when me and my dad staret visting graveyards and looking at all the old dates
Thank goodness for dads like yours and Kurt's!
That is James Garfield at Lake View Cemetery.

Thanks Darrell. I wish I had had more time to see all of the graves I wanted to see back there!
Never been to any presidential graves but I spend alot of time in our local cemetery. I go every holiday, the birthdays, and the day my parents died and put flowers on their graves. While I'm there I put flowers on my grandmothers, grandfathers, and one of my great grandmother's graves.
Steve l love that story Steve you are role model l am proud of you you passed on many things to many people you should go to original grave of President Lincoln he was moved because someone try to get his body

Thanks Donald!
Steve we love you take care
Thanks Richard!
My first time was a visit to Yosemite Valley cemetery around 10 yrs of age (1960), because of the many floods and harsh weather it needed restoration work, you should put this on you list of places to visit
Oh yes I got interested in Cemeteries from a young age. Probably about 10 at least. Always find your videos very interesting.
Welcome to the early bird club Rory! :-)
Another great video!!

I've thought about visiting my own grave site before I die and don't know exactly how to do it since I want to be cremated.
Hi Elizabeth. I hope you are able to visit them. They are all so interesting and you'll probably be surprised like I was.
I've only been to a few cemeteries but there can be some interesting and/or historic things to be found in them. Punch Bowl is a beautiful cemetery.
Wow soo young .that's the young man doesn't he know a lot of stuff for his age
Thank you!
WOW very interesting super kool ,1st class great info.,, AAAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++ again great video I liked it a lot ,keep up the great work.
Oh you were in Albany New York to see Chester Arthur at Albany Rural? My neck of the woods, my grandparents are buried there. It's a beautiful place. This was so interesting!
Wow!!!
Have either of you ever met Michael Beschloss the presidential historian?
I have not, but I would like to! I met Doris Kearns Goodwin in 2016, Eric Foner in 2019, and Candice Millard in 2022. I also attended a talk by David McCullough in 2008 but did not get to meet him.
Since this comment, I have also met historians Timothy Naftali and Douglas Brinkley. I still have not yet Michael Beschloss, though.
This is what I love doing this the most

I became a genealogy nut in high school and😮 visited every graveyard in Tompkins Co NY looking for my family.
