The Fundbüro (lost property office) does regularly auctions on the items they have. It is one way to get a cheap bike.

Totally agree on the language school thing! I spent so much money in France to learn the language, when it would have been way cheaper in Nigeria. Btw girl job well done! LOVE the channel :)

About finding accomodation: it is mostly a big city thing. Urbanisation is still going strong.
Berlin has grown by almost half a million people in the last 25 years. However, construction of new flats has not kept pace. Back in the 90es, there were plenty of cheap flats, so the city government massivly scaled back funding for housing (Berlin was pretty broke by that point).
Nowadays of course, that turned out to be a rather short-sighted course of action and it will take years to get back on track.

Having no shops open on Sunday is better than having no transportation on Christmas day, which is in England.

the goethe-institut is an organisation with the purpose to spread german language and culture. so if they offer to teach you german it is basically subsidized by the german government ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goethe-Institut )
that is probably the main reason why it was cheaper, the other reason is that people employed in germany probably have a higher wage. and using office rooms in germany is more expensive too

I always wonder why people do not get information about a country they plan to move to before they take this step? The German government and other official websites provide a lot of valuable information.
To learn German (for which I applaude you 😊) you do not necessarily need a language school, try a local "Volkshochschule". Outside Corona, they provide an excellent and rather less costly service.

Does german govt. says on website that making friends are Difficult here with locals? Or are you told by visa officer that your bike must be stolen 3 times at least to be called as a real berliner or that Berlin streets will be filled woth lot of dirty stuff around so get a plastic bag to collect the trash??? No offense somethings are learned only by experience!!

95% of Germans have a debit card (ec-Karte) and use it regualy for payments higher then 10?€. Only credit cards like visa is not used because the shops have to pay a high fee so they prefere the german debit card.

  • @thestonegateroadrunner7305

Cash is king because card payments often are asociated with unnecessary hassle. With cash you don't need infrastructure, electricity or intenet. German customers like cash simply for practical reasons, the customer is king hence cash is the predominant payment method.
Of course finding accommodation is a problem if you are looking at hotspots. Try to find a place in Paris and London and then say again that it is difficult in Berlin ;).
In Germany you cannot make friends, you can get aquainted, after a while you might become friends, but there is no such thing as actively MAKING friends in Germany. After you have become friends with someone, however, they are friends for life.

Come to Australia (in particular Melbourne) where you'll see no one pay for drinks at a bar or club with cash. It's just way easier to use card here, everyone accepts the tap card/phone pay.

    • @kylezs
      @kylezs 3 роки тому +1

@@thestonegateroadrunner7305 wish Cash probably. Note my reference to "Melbourne", I didn't say cash was completely useless, I actually dislike the fact that there are now places that only accept card. Sometimes I don't want the bank (and by extension, the government) knowing my every purchase.

I am German and I would like to tell you something. It is also not easy for Germans to make new friends when they move to a new city, for example. What I recommend to you is: Connect with people about your hobbies. It doesn't matter what hobby you have, there are always groups that do it together. Jogging, hiking, motorcycling, mountain biking, needlework, cooking, it doesn't matter. There are always people who do it in groups. So it's relatively easy to find people with the same preferences. Just try it and give people some time.

Argh, the "everything-is-closed-on-sundays"-myth, again. Ok, really ? Today is sunday, and I got my "Brötchen" from the local bakery, which is open from 7am tp 11am on sundays. Sure, not the usual business hours, but at least... Besides, all restaurants, cafes and fast food chains are open on sundays, you won't have to starve ;) Gas stations are open and usually have a small shop with convenience items at least. Train stations are open and - at least in the bigger Cities - usually have grocery shops or small supermarkets at the station. In rural areas, you'll find farmers markets and shops open on sundays. Cinemas, Gyms, Baths and Saunas, Museums, Zoos and other sight seeing facilities are all open on sundays, it's their main business day. What do you mean by saying "everything - I mean everything" is closed on sundays? (O.K., this is a typical german, nitpicking comment ;)
