This is very helpful, and probably very true, but I can't help but recognize that a lot of things that are negatively perceived are common behaviors of neurodivergents, and also allow for the most misunderstanding cross-culturally. Academia probably needs to deal with these implications.
Valid point - there are neurodivergent traits, though, such as intense, focused interest which make individuals in academia phenomenal. It's a reason why, in 18 years in academia myself, I have found the majority of high ranking academics are neurodivergent (including myself!).

This is an outstanding question, Andy - the honest answer is that length does not matter so long as it is well maintained and groomed (ie you look professional and cared for)
