Ok, so this was an emotional roller coaster for me. When I first saw the thumbnail, I figured you were going to goof on it. Then once I realized you weren’t, I was all excited thinking of the great albums ahead. But then I realized it’s a one off so I kinda got depressed again. Great video though!!
Finally!!! This band deserves the same kind of treatment you have given The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. 'This Was' is a decent album but then you have 'Stand Up' and 'Benefit' and 'Aqualung'... which are GREAT!!! By the way, I saw Jethro Tull in 1972 at the Philadelphia Spectrum where they performed 'Thick As A Brick'.
From the time that my friends and I stole it in '68 (the three of us would grab the records and then after listening which one get it and I got This Was), I've loved this album. How many rock albums had a Roland Kirk tune? I don't think there's a bum track on the album. Another incredibly well done deep dive!
This was awesome Jeff! "THIS WAS" is a great debut for JT. Very bluesy & jazzy compared to their later albums. Had no idea Tony Iommi was in the band in the beginning! Look forward to seeing the next ones. 😀👍
Thanks Cristian! I love that early blues ones too. Thank God Iommi didn’t stick around in Jethro Tull. Imagine how different things would have turned out.
Hi Jeff!!! Cool episode and nice to see one album you don't see very often when you talk about Jethro Tull...... i only know "A Song for Jeffrey" and yes it's different to the rest of their catalogue and sound. Nice footage too and seeing Iommi playing with them.... cheers and be well
Tony Iommi was in this band for 5 min. Ian seems to respect him a ton. It’s just that his severed fingers couldn’t handle the complex chords JT usually plays especially on their mellower pieces
@@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati4486 Agree. Worked both ways Tony learned form Ian that it required discipline to be in a band. Ian did say if he had stayed, JT would’ve made albums full of Aqualungs. Would’ve been heavier for sure.
This may sound stupid, but, even though I was a casual Tull fan as a teen (owned 3 or 4 of their albums), I was never interested in listening to this album because . . . I hated the cover. I was like, wth is this, that has got to be the most uncool look for a "rock" band, looking like a bunch of dirty, smelly old men. 😄 It totally prejudiced me against the album, but I am digging what I'm hearing in your review!
Still my favorite Tull album. Love the raw bluesyness of it
Great DD I have never listened to JT sp great to learn about them
And incredible deep dive, Jeff, into one of my favorite bands. You always do a fantastic job bringing these to life.
Thank you!

Thanks Gary! This will definitely be a series. I love Jethro Tull (What I’ve heard) so I would never goof on them. 🤣🤪
The flute 🪈 is a heavy metal instrument.
Agreed. I believe the record company used that slogan in an add after Tull won the Grammy award over Metallica?
@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati4486 Yes they did ! & it was funny.

Thanks! That has to have been an incredible show!

Thank you! Such an impressive debut album. They were such a multifaceted band.

@@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati4486 Right. And Black Sabbath may not have existed either. 😳

Thanks Cristian! To be honest I had this album but never got around to spinning it. I’m glad I rediscovered what a great collection it is. Cheers!
Awesome bro
Thanks bro!

Yes and I think THANK GOD or we would have never had Black Sabbath.

Thanks! That cover is atrocious. It initially put me off the album as well. 👍
