I hope they do a Prowl so that the Earthrise 2-pack in general goes significantly down and not just the Ironhide dropping in price to below voyager price (I’ve seen listings with this).
Man, I'm not used to this level of detailed analysis of vehicle modes from a design perspective with a bit of education on automotive history thrown in, and the photoshopped illustrations are very professional. I was very pleased with this version of the figure, and I even got it at under deluxe price point ($22) because Black Friday lol. But my only issue is how much pressure is used to attach the chest piece with the leg plate at the top. And the worst issue is definitely the silver bumper on the bottom, my figure is already scratched. I would give him a solid 6.5/10 because good robot mode and looks nice
This is one of those times where I can appreciate the effort put into making this version of the figure for the people that want that more 'screen/animation accurate' appearance to go with the rest of the Studio Series 86 lineup but I don't need to get it. You can tell SS put more effort on the robot mode. I am fine with the Earthrise version, after going through a pain in the butt effort to get him at a decent price, seperate from Prowl who I didn't care for YET ANOTHER version of the Datsun brother mold (I have Bluestreak and Barricade for the Siege version, Smokescreen and Silverstreak for the Earth mode version). And personally since he is a security officer and bodyguard, I find the riot shield a fitting moderinzation to the character and his toughness.
Great video as usual. I love to see so much thought and constructive scrutiny poured into such a simple, unassuming and easily overlooked figure. “Sleeper bots” have always been some of my favorites. A badass looking racecar or tank transformer is always going to be cool. But when you take an everyday vehicle like a run of the mill SUV or plain old van and give it super awesome robot powers!, now you’ve peaked my interest. Sometimes I feel like a lot of collectors forget the magic in that. And Hasbro forgets it far too often.

For a character that dies early in the movie, they sure did go hard on this one. Course they'd milk it with an eventual Ratchet and a dying edition with, of course, Prowl in Earthrise mold! Simmons, you've done it again!

Excellent review, animations, and custom parts, as always! I'm still sticking with my iGear Weapons Specialist, though. And, at the 17:41 mark: we see why Ironhide was cast as Dr. Livesey in the Iacon Theatre production of "Treasure Island."
The alt mode looks like a fun paint/customization project, specially with that VW front end. The robot mode though is definitely my favorite G1 Ironhide version ever. Definitely gonna be picking this up
I just got this figure yesterday and I honestly love messing around with him. Hope you enjoy doing this and hope to see you in your newest video.
Remember when the Studio Series line was supposed to be the most movie accurate figures when the line started? It didn't take Hasbro long to start cutting corners.
dk-2 guard is a must get with that second ironhide honestly really good fixes every problem he has other than the feet but you already have the fix for that
I never noticed how similar in height Bee-Movie Ironhide is to his SS and WFC counterparts. As such, why is his alt mode so small and adorable?? lol And on top of getting the eventual reprolabels (gotta watch their website eagle-eyed because they WILL sell out in no time flat!), I'm gonna have to get one of your vanette fronts as well. You explain yourself very well in every video, and make me care about stuff in these toys that I’d never even think of. And the stop motion is always a treat to look at. So thanks for these videos :D
Your correction *massively* helps the front end of the van. If Hasbro really did that it would've went a long way towards me getting the 86 instead of sticking with Earthrise.
The fact that there's no excuse for not taking the time... And when I can find amateur young artist who can take model kits or waste plastic and spin out awesome master pieces... On top of the huge Brand attached... I FULLY AGREE WITH YOU - they just didn't really try!
Your videos are the most fun videos to watch about Transformers. You're a super cool guy, and I love you and your work. I can't say enough good things, honestly.
The vehicle mode is a primary reason I stuck to the ER mold for Ironhide (twice, via Guard) and the SG Ratchet you've likely seen my custom paint job on in the Discord. Even with your custom bumper, and glad we both like the VW square light front...something about the shape and angles of the van bother me, and honestly, I personally find the mismatched reds WORSE on SS86 because of the clear plastic. The red painted on that draws your attention to the clear plastic flashier than a neon sign. And no matter how much people convince me that post-Kingdom clear plastic is sturdier, such as with Guard, it's still clear plastic. While I'm of the minority that still prefers the robot look of Earthrise, especially the more cohesive leg thickness, and definitely the head, there is definitely no argument on the engineering and much of the sculpt. Like, WOW, I am impressed! I'm so glad that Ironhide got such a super redemption, same as Arcee (well, compared to Earthrise, anyway. YMMV on if that's true for T30/LG). And I now lament that Starscream missed his chance for an SS86 redemption, so we'll be waiting another half decade for another go at the G1 design. Finances prevent me from getting this when I'm already satisfied enough with the Earthrise molds, especially since I also spent to upgrade them, but I wouldn't be against getting one if the chance for a really cheap one presents itself, same as Blitzwing. Won't be getting Ratchet, though, coz I'd otherwise be invalidating the hard work on my very first full custom that turned out so beautifully.
all I care about: is Transformation fun? Does robot look G1 accurate? if both are yes, then it quickly becomes one of my favorite. THIS HITS ALL THE MARKS.
THANK YOU!! Seriously, I've been seeing people praise this thing in both robot mode AND vehicle mode, left and right, and while I can appreciate the toon accurate bot, every time they get to the van and just heap praises on it, I keep finding myself screaming at my computer screen like "ARE YOU PEOPLE BLIND?!" And I mean, yeah, I GET IT. People were REALLY ANNOYED by the ER IH design. But I still felt that, aside from the exclusivity - the fact that you JUST COULD NOT GET HIM for a reasonable price - all of the problems with ER IH were EASILY SOLVED . . . and yet, SS86 IH just . . . DIDN'T: - ER IH was three-four different shades of red. They DIDN'T FIX THIS for this new figure! WTF HasTak?? - ER IH had a giant hinge on the rear exterior of van mode. HasTak ADDED TWO MORE GIANT HINGES to each side!! - ER IH had robot feet that were just hanging off the back of the van. MULTIPLE 3rd party creators have made really good mods to fix this. Hasbro could have retooled the figure to do the same, for a FRACTION of what it cost to make a new figure. - ER IH's paint apps were lacking, particularly the windows. So just . . . paint him better. Make the windows black. Yes, this would mean he's got painted windows on his legs, but again, minor retool alters which side of his leg faces front, or a fold-over panel to cover the windows, this would be solved, and again, cheaper than making a whole new figure. Meanwhile, S86 IH's back windows are STILL unpainted, poorly sized and located, AND he's missing his yellow stripe. - ER IH's shoulder sticking out of the side. Smooth the visible part, remove the mechanical detail greebles, and trim the shoulder at an angle so it appears like a window. This would not harm the appearance of the robot mode IN THE SLIGHTEST. - ER IH's design tolerances left gaps in places (particularly where his shield/sled connected to the top and became his roof). Minor retools could address this problem. And yeah, should have been addressed DURING PROTOTYPING, but whatever, they could fix it now. SS86 IH still has REALLY glaring panel lines, some of them diagonally cutting through windows like Classics Ironhide, a figure everyone seems to hate. And of course, LEFT AND RIGHT PANEL STAMPS IN THE WINDOWS!! All of these mods can easily be done by just a fan customizer with limited technical skill (and HAS BEEN, I've done most of it myself), so HasTak could have done it too. It would have shaved down the budget TREMENDOUSLY, allowed him to maintain a Deluxe price, and avoided the new issues like the extra hinges, no battle sled, knees sticking out at the bottom, and large sections of clear plastic. I was kinda bummed when I heard there was going to be an improved SS86 IH, 'cuz I'd put in the time and money to track ER IH down and mod him to be a better van, and he was supposedly going to be obsolete. Now? I'm glad. This new guy just DOES NOT work for me. With the Nonnef feet and wheels and battle sled mods and extra weapons, and with black windows and yellow stripes all the way around the back . . . I actually think the ER IH is a great figure!
Ironhide is a pretty dull robot design and I have no attachment to the character because I find the first two seasons of the cartoon largely unwatchable. But I did pick up the figure on sale, and after I got him out of the box....He poses really well! Like effortlessly. The only parts that move are the ones you want to and he looks good in almost any pose. I will be doing some paint modifications to the van mode, but quite happy with my purchase. Merry Christmas, btw!
Great review! I agree. Robot mode is stellar! Alt mode, not so much. Still, I picked this up. I have both 86 and Earthrise and I will keep both of them as I like aspects from each one. Van mode is better on ER with wheel and feet upgrades. Toyhax would make it even better.
Holy crow, was on the fence about getting him, but that upgraded grill reminds me of my late granddad's old vanette. Not only that, but that is some spectacular robot articulation.
not sure if anyone has brought it up yet, but i just picked up the ss86 ironhide and prowl twopack, and swapping the head and windshield assembly between the two ironhides really makes the vehicle mode heaps better! you do have contend with pin removal on clear plastic, but i got lucky with a $16usd automatic pin puncher
@@TheLazyEyebrow easy enough, but not as easy as the bumper pin. on my copy of the clear windshield and associated pieces, i didnt even get stress marks, but that was more because i was trying to avoid getting them.
Nice to see you back in action Eyebrow. Wanted to ask, what are your thoughts on the recent HasLab Star Saber, and if you're interested on reviewing it?
@@TheLazyEyebrow well then only prowl is not confirmed ,but if would put it past them. By the way the perfect way ro end studio 86 if they made all characters form the Film. Would be movie accurate optimus prime and megatron, if only megatrons gun Mode wasnt illegal in the US
12:51 It's probably for Ratchet. Since Transformers molds have the same-colored-pieces as part of the same mold for efficiency and cost-effect. So when they remold it into ratchet, those parts will need to be in white. (This is all based on passing knowledge and educated assumptions.)
Okay, your complaints are valid, but I found this thing at Target for 30% off, so I basically payed deluxe price for this Voyager figure. As such it is one of my favorite figures.
That walking animation is *crisp*. Almost shelled out before on a scalped er one just to get a somewhat accurate looking earth ironhide, i know the van on this isnt great but i’d still take ss over er for that great robot mode.
I totally understand your gripes with the van mode! When it comes to real world or even stylized or clean toon accuracy, the van is more of a messy, mostly ok to hodgepodge first-attempt-at-building-your-own-kit-car-van-thing toon look. I think the lack of a yellow stripe is to aid in animation accuracy, which I think was the main goal of this figure. I don’t mind the vehicle mode honestly, (the clean red kinda gives me Radio Flyer vibes and I mean that in a personal good way.) but I can also see all the issues with the alt mode, and I admit…the part numbers on the front windows are…not good to say the least…(I personally would see if the clear plastic was just a bit thicker, and/or have a blurry frosted look. I like the shade of blue of the windows and I would like to see it stay that plastic but with thicker, and blurry, maybe even separate plastic shapes that are placed in inset plastic window shapes molded into the main body?) but yeah. With the issues like the window numbers, and the pronounced hinges aside, I don’t mind the vehicle mode all that much! I really like the animation accurate look they’re going for, which might be a reason for a lot of paintless areas. Not that making the alt mode a bit more cohesive, and adding a bit more detail like an actual rear window and painted taillights wouldn’t help it greatly though! The transformation and robot mode…THAT IS JUST AMAZING!!! And the articulation and little touches just make it seem that, despite the van being…fine at best (thanks so much for making alternate front ends for us to buy if we want!❤) there was someone at Hasbro who wanted to make a genuinely good robot mode that was almost PURPOSE BUILT FOR STOP MOTION ANIMATION!!! LIKE WOW THAT WALK CYCLE WAS SO GOOD!!! I hope somewhere down the line we might get a Studio Series 2.0 line with rereleases and updated transformers designs from all the movies and that fix a lot of, if not ALL THE ISSUES with all current figures that need a redo…*cough, cough* VW Bumblebee *cough, cough* and if there are figures that are already perfect enough, then maybe reissue them with a few new upgrades if necessary, like more vibrant or accurate paint, like the premium finish line, or retooled engineering for certain parts, like making all hinges solid plastic, instead of some being clear, or making the paint match better or have hinges more flushed. Sorry for this little rant thing, I just wanted to add my two cents! Love your vids, can’t wait to see more!❤👍
Honestly, I personally much prefer the ER version for both vehicle and robot mode. I didn't own any Ironhide before this figure was leaked and then after we got in-hand images of it, I went out and bought an ER Ironhide off of eBay (with a Prowl included).
This figure isn't definitely in the same line as SS86 Hot Rod, Scourge, Grimlock or even Gnaw. The designer of this figure just wanted his pay check. BTW, your 3D printed front end replacements are awesome, specially the VW one!
the battle damaged one from the two pack looks better because no clear plastic also because it was shell shaded. but the broken window doesn't look that good
I guess that would make ER Iron Hide Studio86's Vehicle mode stunt double for filming the car action scenes, with 86 robot mode being the face we see for shoot outs and walking exposition scenes. Kinda like the differences in kingdom and netflix version Cheetors. Have a good day.
I wasn’t too interested in this guy but that upgrade looks so nice. Now I’ve just got to decide wether or not I’m willing to pay around $50 for the best Ironhide available.

Your correction *massively* helps the front end of the van. If Hasbro really did that it would've went a long way towards me getting the 86 instead of sticking with Earthrise.
THANK YOU!!!! The yellow stripe makes such a huge difference. Well said.
your wealthy with money to waste 🤦♂️
The fact that there's no excuse for not taking the time... And when I can find amateur young artist who can take model kits or waste plastic and spin out awesome master pieces... On top of the huge Brand attached... I FULLY AGREE WITH YOU - they just didn't really try!
A friend of mine said that the front of the van mode looks like a beard, and now I can't unsee it 😂
Dude whenever I watch your videos my cat snuggles with me. I don’t get it but you’re my favorite channel now
Ahh, Studio Series Ironhide.
When every panel is a different shade of red!!
Walking animation, amazing. With your front end and a little customization, this figure gets an A+ 👍👍
Lol I love how the sponsorship segment is called bill paying time
Your videos are the most fun videos to watch about Transformers.
Won't be getting Ratchet, though, coz I'd otherwise be invalidating the hard work on my very first full custom that turned out so beautifully.
customizing figures is the whole point of mainline figures lol, love to see your work on them !
all I care about:
is Transformation fun?
Does robot look G1 accurate?
if both are yes, then it quickly becomes one of my favorite.
THIS HITS ALL THE MARKS.
Haha well I'm glad you like it. The transformation is impressive and the robot is incredible
THANK YOU!!
Seriously, I've been seeing people praise this thing in both robot mode AND vehicle mode, left and right, and while I can appreciate the toon accurate bot, every time they get to the van and just heap praises on it, I keep finding myself screaming at my computer screen like "ARE YOU PEOPLE BLIND?!"
And I mean, yeah, I GET IT. People were REALLY ANNOYED by the ER IH design. But I still felt that, aside from the exclusivity - the fact that you JUST COULD NOT GET HIM for a reasonable price - all of the problems with ER IH were EASILY SOLVED . . . and yet, SS86 IH just . . . DIDN'T:
- ER IH was three-four different shades of red.
I don't think it's a fantastic figure and would choose this any day, but yeah, the new van is just....ehh
Simmons has done it again! Haha great- I forgot about that guy
Did the pin come out easy?
@@TheLazyEyebrow easy enough, but not as easy as the bumper pin. on my copy of the clear windshield and associated pieces, i didnt even get stress marks, but that was more because i was trying to avoid getting them.
"Is this the ironhide of Ironhide!"
The Lazy Eyebrow-2022
Ironhide and Ratchet were 2 of my favorite transformers because there is no such thing as a mediocre van
“The feet rock forwards…” (moves foot backwards)
“…and backwards” (moves foot forward)
Thanks you !!!!! I did the custom in one minute, so simple, so cool and now his perfect thanks
I Luv ❤️🔥 the square light vw front end you made!!!!! For Ironhide
Nice to see you back in action Eyebrow. Wanted to ask, what are your thoughts on the recent HasLab Star Saber, and if you're interested on reviewing it?
interested, but never backed it
The 86 battle damaged prowl and battle damaged ironhide version of this figure adds the stripe
now these vids hit different ever since his departure
Ironhide always remind me of the shuttle I drive for Bike trails with me mates lol
16:11 interestingly, some leaks say all 3 other bots in this shot will have studio series Version of them coming
I believe those rumors. Ratchet and Brawn are already confirmed. Prowl I hear is legacy pt2, and not sure how that's going to look
I sort of had that idea as well, as I assume grey is easier to paint than trying to colour match white to plastic
16:38 when fruity pebbles rock your whole mouth
Great review, and I’ll definitely be working to get that pin out on the sides of the legs in robot mode.
If Hasbro could do a red version of this guy, with non Translucent plastic and NO battle damage, I’d pick him up.
You neglected to mention that those horrid tabs on the top of the van are so the guns can be plugged in there
Your videos blow me away every time. Just.....
Love your vids, can’t wait to see more!❤👍
I see that you have seen quite a few so far haha. Welcome to the channel!
You should print your own, you have a good eye for design
They need to get rid of the toon accuracy astheic, as far as colorway is concerned. It hurts vehicle mode. That hip skirt mod is sweet btw…
Honestly, I personally much prefer the ER version for both vehicle and robot mode. I didn't own any Ironhide before this figure was leaked and then after we got in-hand images of it, I went out and bought an ER Ironhide off of eBay (with a Prowl included).
Dumb crossover idea: Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine transforming van would be a great use of this mold.
It's almost like i made and sell a piece for that haha
I decided that this would be the ironhide for my collection over the earthrise as I have the dk guard for this mold.
Opaque windows are the devil. A window is a translucent material entity and that's the end of that arguement
This Ironhide is ready to blow some Decepto-creeps!
All about the bot, great review Lazy. Amazing modifications too, I really like the idea of a VW Ironhide.
shocking, i think the robot mode is horrendous while the van looks decent enough
This guy’s thumbnail showed 50 Shades of Red in half a second
This figure isn't definitely in the same line as SS86 Hot Rod, Scourge, Grimlock or even Gnaw. The designer of this figure just wanted his pay check. BTW, your 3D printed front end replacements are awesome, specially the VW one!
Looks better than g1 ironhides vehicle mode...but still coulda put windows in the back lll
and he looks so happy
the battle damaged one from the two pack looks better because no clear plastic also because it was shell shaded. but the broken window doesn't look that good
I wish they included a alternate head sculpt thats smoke coming out of his mouth from the movie
AYO YOU MAKING A KNIGHT RIDER CUSTOM NOW IM HYPED I CAN NOT WAIT TO SEE IT
I guess that would make ER Iron Hide Studio86's Vehicle mode stunt double for filming the car action scenes, with 86 robot mode being the face we see for shoot outs and walking exposition scenes. Kinda like the differences in kingdom and netflix version Cheetors. Have a good day.
The idea that Ironhide is a Vulfpeck fan
I wasn’t too interested in this guy but that upgrade looks so nice. Now I’ve just got to decide wether or not I’m willing to pay around $50 for the best Ironhide available.
I love this figure! Best G1 Iron Hide! Aside from the MP!
Hope they make a ratchet with this mold.
Edit: They will, FINALLY!!!
The VW grill looks great.
