It's really not important for black Carribean culture or British culture. I'm both Caribbean & British and no one in my family like it because it's a trashy representation of Carribean culture. People from the outside looking in think all we do is dance half naked, grind half naked with random people we've never met, cook jerk chicken, smoke weed, and have really loud obnoxious music. I remember being in Madeville Jamaica with my grandparents and seeing people dressed like people are dressed at carnival and people would look at them like they're prostitutes because they probably were. Most Carribean people I've spoken to who actually went back home to live but were here find carnival distasteful. Yes it started out as a response to racism. Great, but what is it now? The UK is by far one of the least racist countries in the world even my grandparents that came here say the racism they face today in this country is by foreigners that are here temporarily or on holiday like arabs so isn't even from the white natives anymore. I'm not saying that don't exist but getting chased down and having the shit kicked out of your because your black isn't a daily occurrence in this country. Again it happens but the exception isn't the rule/normality. Comparing it to festivals like Reading and Glastonbury is insane just due to the difference in numbers but if we look at a crimes committed compared to those attended the event then Nottinghill Carnival is far worse. Not only that but the type of crimes are so much more severe. There are thefts and drug offences at Reading and Glastonbury. There are stabbings at Nottinhgill every year on both family and non family days as well as thefts and drug offences lots of assaults on attendees and on people working the Carnival plus sexual assaults!? 🤨 The difference between those festivals and Carnival is that they happen else where. This happens in the heart of our city and goes through residential areas where people live and leaves it a complete mess. It's ridiculous to think that people wouldn't like that it happens every year. Lastly if this is all that you can think of as representing our Carribean culture then it's sad.
@@jollyscarecrow Exactly! The common denominator with violence from Glasgow to Brazil is poverty, not race or where your from. But suddenly when it comes to carnival it becomes a race issue? It’s an insane double standard. And people who commit crimes at carni don’t get away with idk what makes you think they don’t.
I think its the stabbings and the stresses expressed from policing it that have caused the issues recently. I've generally found the older caribbean community (first generation born in UK from the late 50s and onwards) to be really nice, very friendly and respectful people. I think the gang based stabbings and the aggravation is horrible and a black mark against the spirit of the carnival. I've been to Notting Hill and had a great time but there needs to be an acknowledgement that as knife crime in London has risen it has risen at the carnival too and that's very sad.
Exactly this - 5 people stabbed at the event this year. There's a qualitative difference between arrests for drug possession at a festival and arrests for attempted murder.
@@robbieshand6139 was going to say this too the argument for crimes per 1000 at an event 7-8x bigger is a terrible comparison. I went the first carnival after COVID and I saw crimes that would've got you arrested at any of the other festival (SA, assault, intimidation, public disorder, drug use)but was not the polices concern because of much more severe crime happening at carnival like robberies and stabbings. Do agree with him on a lot of stuff but that argument was not good.
I went to Crop-over in Barbados, it wasn't trashy and dangerous, it was a great time. Notting Hill Carnival is full of stabbings, sexual assaults and knife crime. Cancel it or have it in a park with security to keep out the trashy trouble makers out of the carnival. It's not about hating Black people, having a safe event should be more important. In total at Carnival this year there were eight stabbings. On Sunday, three people were stabbed. Two sustained non-life threatening injuries and one, a 32-year-old woman, remains in a critical condition.

The moment an violence outbreak like this happens the police are suddenly short on resources.
