  • Yamaha AvantGrand N1x Review
The Yamaha AvantGrand N1x is a hybrid piano which has the same keyboard feel as a traditional Grand Piano. Coupled with both the CFX and Bosendofer Imperial concert piano samples, this is a wonderful instrument to play.

The purpose of these sorts of pianos (AvantGrand or Novus) is that you can have a very high quality grand piano action in an environment where any type of acoustic instrument (grand or upright) would be completely impractical i.e. accommodation where access is extremely limited and where the volume of an acoustic instrument would not be acceptable. The upper and lower parts of the piano can be separated meaning the instrument can easily be installed even in a very small flat. Not everybody who wants to spend money on valued posessions lives in a large house.

Sorry but although it sounds nice I’m not too keen on its look. It looks boxy as if it’s trying to look between a grand piano and upright and this was the result. As if it didn’t quite know what to morph into. I know it’s probably just me.

I think the size is related to the space required for the full-sized concert grand piano key bed. I'm sure the designers could have made it larger, but not sure that they could have made it more compact.

I really like the sound of Yamahas digital pianos, but the N1x is only around 600€ less then the Kawai Novus right now, and the Novus has features like the real damper mechanisms, which make a big difference in feel in my opinion. So i don't know if the pricing of Yamaha makes sense here, considering the instrument itself, hasn't changed at all as far as i understood, but only the new samples have been added to it, which of course doesn't justify a price increase of 2000+€ from the N1, even though it just got released and prices will go down eventually.

@@niklasmennel215 I'm planning to update my Clavinova with something more realistic. In fact my flat is not well soundproofed and I'm playing a lot in the evening and in the night, a real acoustic isn't a oppurtunity for me.
So I went to my local piano store to test them all: AvantGrand N1, N2, N3X, Nu1X and the Novus 10. And after I tested them about a few hours I have to say that I was very disappointed by the Novus 10. OK, it has much more possibilities in choosing piano types and other instruments and you can adjust a lot of tuning. But the sound from the speakers was some kind of muffled and not so rich like here on most youtube Videos (which are not filmed with speakers but line in sound) .
The playing of the keyboard - like the other Kawai Digital Pianos - was more shaky than smoothe. And finally the finishing was very poor. On the ends of the black keys you could see the pure wood colour when pushing them down because there was no more black colour on it. That made me feeling very bad to sit and play on this piano. The most fun and enjoyment I definitely had on the AvantGrand N2. So I definitely know that I will save my money for the N2X.
Besides that you can read a lot of threads of NV 10 Issues in the piano world forum. But finally you have to test it on your own! :)

    • @Schmidthorst69
      @Schmidthorst69 3 роки тому +4

@The Sting Hey, Mr. Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner! :)
I'm a very proud and happy owner of the N1x since a few months. I'm so in love with it. First I was about to buy the N2. I have tested all of the Yamaha and Kawai hybrid pianos for a very long time. I found the feel and the sound through the speakers to be the best and most authentic with the N2. But some annoying overtones of the old CF3 sample bothered me so much that I decided on the N1X. The keyboard action is the same but the N2 has in addition the Tactile Response System which simulates the vibration of acoustic pianos.
But the N1X is still a really great instrument. Especially if you can't have an acoustic piano due to the living situation.
I really enjoy playing on it and have almost become addicted to it.
So the Avantgrand models are the digital pianos who come closest to the action, the feel and the sound of an acoustic piano.
So I hope you will make the right decision! But take this advice: test and play as much models as you can!
      Good luck, mate!

And Novus NV10S doesn't behave correctly with sympathetic resonance when you play a key only with damper up without hit the strings (Or half the travel of a key). N1X behave like a real PIANO and have damper duration with aftertouch midi than can be used with advanced options in Pianoteq 7.

Nothing beats the AvantGrand and the Kawai NV serious of Hybrid Pianos. It is really the closest you’ll get to an Acoustic Grand. This gods thing about it is that you can connect a Apple MacBook with PianoTeq 7 Pro or other similar software and have as much pianos and other instruments at your finger tips. It is true in saying that the action of the high-end Clavinova’s or somewhat heavier for some reason.

This N1X owns a nice amplification, but most of the time a digital piano is selected cause of the problems of neighbo(u)rhood. The main attractive thing with this N1X is the
keyboard, not really the sound whis is still digital, especially if you play with headphones.I am afraid that the sound with headphones is strictly the same as on my CLP-675, that means only average. I am going to test this N1X, bringing my headphones, and I'll judge if the keyboard merits that I change my Clavinova for this model.

I traded in my N3 2 years ago for an acoustic. While it had probably the best DP sound and action, like this new new N1x, it was sorely lacking. The sound here cannot in any way compare to any acoustic over 6'. It lacks overtones and complexity in general, along with compatible attack, bloom and decay. This is readily apparent in even demo videos. What finally convinced me to go acoustic was the limit in dynamic range. I reached a wall in playing things like the Goldberg Variations where it is essential to emphasize one note in a 2 note chord. Forget the sound differences (as if sampling any grand's sound scale will make any DP sound like one), you need a real string/hammer interaction to have a decent dynamic range. This N1x's sales pitch which is supposed to make you think you're getting a concert grand's sound is just that.

Both types of instrument have a place - it just depends on a user's individual circumstances.

We’re hearing the sound through a line-out plugged from the piano directly into a computer. It’s actually the best way to hear what the piano actually sounds like, in its purest form, though yes, it bypasses the speakers. However, with headphones, this is what you would hear.
