- How do you make OSB, Oriented Strand Board, Smooth?
Well I had a wall of it in the house that I'm renovating and I thought rather than replace it I might first see how hard it is to make it smooth enough to paint.
You'll see in the video how I did this, and the end result, although hard to tell exact flatness of it in a video, ended up being a surface that I can paint and will finish nicely.
Thanks for watching.

Given the amount of square footage needed, the difficulty sanding the wood, the low profile of its surface imperfections, and the fact that it's being painted, I'd treat it just like any other drywall skim coating project. Large spreader and some mud, some light sanding later of any ridges accidentally left, and paint.
Aha! I knew there had to be an easier way. I have a table with this material on top that I use as a plant holder. But I hated the surface. Im going to do that this weekend. Thank you!
Thanks for the video, answered my question! 👍🏻
And on a side note, I think it really speaks volumes for those who simply comment with something condescending and yet offer no constructive alternatives. Lol
Thank you so much
Thanks man!!!
What grit sand paper were you using each time you sanded?
I used 120 and then 180. If you have the patience a second coat of filler would give it make sure you didn't miss any spots. But having said that it turned out really well on the test patches without a second coat. With a good undercoat layer or two it's going to look great I think.
I bought a house with a cottage on it that has the entire inside covered with osb. I'm 67. If I did what you are doing I would be 80 by the time i finished.
What grit sandpaper was used?
Why not wall paper with 1000 guage lining paper then paint that?
I have a 20'x10' mancave covered in osb how long did it take you to do that small patch?
Prob a month lmao
Rumor has it that he's still doing it to this day! Lol
Now you can go to Lowes or home Depot and get some sheetrock mud, they have several varieties, get the kind that makes less dust and covers deeper
Grab a 12" drywall spreader, slap it on, sand it off.
Great job! Can you tell me what you are using to take the dust away please 🙏
Blow really hard. Or use a vac
Thanks for this video. What kind of filler did you use?
I was wondering the same thing as well. So I did a search & found this, www.bunnings.com.au/parfix-1kg-ready-to-use-multipurpose-filler_p1210322 it's the same one he's using in the video (I just paused it on the can he was holding & did an image search for multipurpose filler). I tried looking locally like Home Depot, Lowes & even on Amazon but couldn't find it. I guess an equivalent to this product could be used that is sold in local stores. Hope this helps you out .
Sublime
Do you have a smaller knife you can use for filling? LOL
Hi there. What brand of filler is that

Um. No. Five years later you finally have the square foot done.
Una de las personas más torpes que he visto. Masillar y lijar, ese es el consejo? Un genio.
1/4 in luan panelling would've looked a lot smoother ( if installed correctly) and eliminated painting.
Could you use stain instead of paint?
No/yes You can use gel stain which isn't really a stain. Typically, resin filler is used on osb and resin is technically a plastic. Plastics will not absorb the color of traditional stains.
Channel name checks out. 🤦♂️
Would've probably been easier to paint with a filler primer and sand afterwards
I'm wondering the same. I'll be trying the primer first. Plus, if you are going to do a mud skim coat, it's probably quicker (and definitely better!) to us a 10-12" spreader, instead of spotting it hear and there.
Nice but i wish your video had some more info dude
Don't know wether I want to do all that work
Watch this video at 2x speed. You're welcome.
Very helpful video. Only critic is to work on your video editing. Nobody wants to watch the entire sanding process. Keep it to how you do it and shorten your process clips down. Thank you for the video and info though.
Smaller, We Need a smaller knife for filling!!! SMALLERRRR!!!
You are making this so difficult. Just get spackling / joint compound and a wide trowel and screed a thin coat on the entire surface. in about four hours or the next day, sand the surface with 120 grit paper. Repeat these steps until the desired smoothness is obtained. lastly, coat the new surface with a wall primer paint. You can the touch up any imperfections with the spackling after it is primered.
true but depending on how old the osb is, sanding it will mean less sanding after the fill. older osb once you start sanding .. forget it, like pealing an onion, use your method
Really??????
That's some toxic air you got it there. Don't try this at home without a real respirator and correct cartridges and have pros come clean up the mess after
The amount of time, effort and cost in filler, sanding discs etc, you may as well just buy plywood.
They make smooth OSB - It's called plywood. What a waste of time.
Waste of good wood
