#3 Volcano Filter Betta Tank (Dante Eats Too Many Shrimps) YES filter, NO CO2, NO Ferts 7.6 Gallon

- Dante is a plakat betta. One day, all of the cherry shrimp were gone from the tank all at once. I couldn’t believe that he would eat nearly 10 shrimp in one day. Turns out, he did eat some, but others were hiding under the volcano filter. He did go after the “clear” or wild shrimp later, but he left the Amano shrimp alone, except the biggest female Amano.
I’m not sure how many shrimp are living underneath the volcano, but they seem to be breeding under there. The shrimp that jumped out were all young or baby shrimp. I think the most shrimp only come out at night when Dante is sleeping b/c during the day, I hardly see any. Only shrimp that are moving about are a few Amano shrimp.
There weren’t any openings at the bottom of the volcano in the beginning. I think the Amanos dug up the gravel, or maybe after I moved, I didn’t seal it well enough during the setup. Now, after cleaning the pump, I intentionally left lots of openings here and there for the shrimp, but not big enough for Dante to squeeze through.
Also, one tetra is MIA.
The shrimp, most likely the Amanos, ate all of the floating plants - the Ricciocarpos natans. They ate the roots first, then later ate the dying leaves. Interestingly, nobody touched the regular duckweed and the giant duckweed.
Hydra is pest. They can sting fish or other critters. I was going to use hydrogen peroxide on it, but they disappeared after a while on their own.
The nerite eggs won't hatch in this tank. They need to be in brackish water to hatch.

@@princesslunakusuma8322 oh come on, they're just shrimp! They don't have brains, just ganglia. They operate purely on instinct and never feel fear or pain. So why shouldn't he let the fish hunt them as if it would in the wild? It great enrichment for fish (which has a brain and is much more complex then shrimp) and it's educational and interesting for us watching the video.
@Abecedarium Animals will always be eating each other and thriving. I'm sorry the shrimps died, it wasn't what the tank maker intended, but it is what nature intended. Dante is less of a bottom-feeder than the shrimps, so he will continue to live his life strong and will create a lot more videos for us to learn from. I hope you can start to see the beauty of the process of life with gentle empathy (for the creatures like the shrimps) but with understanding (for the creatures compelled to eat the others, like Dante) as well

Well, Bettas can get very aggressive with colorful male guppies because they remind betta males of other males of their species. Maybe he just sees the same colour as him and just wants to kill it all.

That one Cherri Shrimp was terrified for its life. Just running and hiding to the most serene music ever.
@Darkness that's a bit exaggerated, many fish exhibit similar behavior, if it'll fit in the fishes mouth they'll eat it. But betta are aggressive in that they're territorial, in larger seasons aquarium's you'll have more success keeping betta with some other fish species, and sometimes shrimp, but in nano aquariums like this its very difficult.

I'm grateful my Betta fish is gentle and sweet. Never harm my cherry shrimps. He was curious at first but he did allow cherry shrimps to live in his kingdom. My heart sank for those little shrimps of yours.

I first found this channel through the first lockdown in 2020 and would stay up until 2, 3 or 4am watching these.
I never subscribed at the time and I’m not sure why.
I just spent an hour looking for this channel after something in my mind sparked a memory of this episode.
I finally found the channel again! I am so happy, like I’ve been smiling for the last fifteen minutes because I’m so pleased, like the comfort of an old friend you haven’t seen in a long time.
Watching these videos again just took me back to the summer of 2020, being so relaxed and unaware I guess? I don’t know if it could be considered sentimentality but I just got the warmest feeling thinking about my time back then and it feels so strange.

These videos are always so relaxing
I don't know how this video was so intensely soothing and terrifying at the same time.
I was so anxious seeing Dante around the “last” red cherry shrimp. Every time he got close I held my breath hoping he wouldn’t finish him off.
Then when you said there were other cherry reds alive my heart swelled, I was so happy that in some way they overcame the adversity and found a way to live.
... then I saw the escapees. My only hope is that a few of them survive still under the volcano and they can somehow rebuild their population. Maybe someday they can make it to the top of the volcano and live there in peace and safety, but that may just be wishful thinking.
I love how your use of cinematography and disarming music makes simple setups of fish in aquariums feel like superbly compelling dramas. You truly are a master at your craft.
as soon as i saw shrimp climbing the volcano and then saw him put the cover on i was like "some shrimp are gonna fall and instead of falling into water they will die" and sure enough it happened.
