Today's video is all about country music songs that deserved to do better -- according to all of us armchair experts. Some of these were tracks that got lost in the shuffle of radio, and some of them just get sidelined by other singles, but in any case, they are songs we liked, but the public kinda rejected.
00:00 - Midland - Sunrise Tells the Story & Keeps
02:38 - Dierks Bentley - Bourbon in Kentucky
03:42 - Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton - You Can't Make Old Friends
    05:08 - Garth Brooks - Tacoma
07:28 - Cody Johnson - Nothin' On You
08:30 - Runaway June - We Were Rich
10:20 - Maddie & Tae - Shut Up and Fish
    12:06 - Random other songs

Bro Midland is soooo underrated and taken for granted how good and original their sound is. By far my favorite country band to date!

“Sound of a Million Dreams” is up there for David Nail’s best song. Honestly he had a lot of songs I thought could be singles (aside from the obvious radio ready songs like “Nights On Fire” and “Whatever She’s Got”) on the last couple major label albums.

I agree with the Alan, Gary, Chris Stapleton and Kacey song choices. As a matter of fact, Alan has compared "So You Don't Have to Love Me Anymore" to "He Stopped Loving Her Today". It should've done better than #25 at radio.

Midland has easily become one of my favorite bands of the last decade. Hard to pick considering I don’t think they’ve put out a song I don’t like but “Nothin’ New Under the Neon”, “Fourteen Gears”, and “Runnin’ Wild” all deserve major success.
Triston Marez is another phenomenal artist that gets slept on a lot.
“Where Rivers Are Red and Cowboys Are Blue” in particular.

Ingrid Andress’ singles (aside from “More Hearts Than Mine” & “Wishful Drinking”) deserved so much better. “The Stranger” & “Lady Like” are masterpieces and I still don’t know why Warner never even attempted to push “Waste Of Lime” (that was a guaranteed smash IMO).

I'm going to go a little old school and say anything Patty Loveless released between 1997-2005. Such great country tunes, but radio left her behind after "She Drew a Broken Heart" in 1996. I know she went bluegrass in 2001 and 2009, I'm not considering those for this comment, but still some great music there too.

That is such a beautiful and straight-up country song. Probably the best song of Clay’s career. I thought I was the only one who knew and loved that song. I’m surprised that even back in 2001, it charted so low.
Biscuits and Shut Up and Fish were also awesome songs, albeit both a little late for their time. These songs sound straight out of the early 2000s. I think the biggest mistakes for both Biscuits and Shut Up and Fish is that they were released in the bro-and-R&B-“country” phase. But they were both AWESOME.

I'll give you a deep, deep cut. About a decade ago, there was a coed trio that included an African American male called "The Farm" or maybe "THE FARM" and they had a debut single called Home Sweet Home. To you it probably was too pop-country. But to me, that should've been a big enough radio hit to at least give them a little traction in Nashville. The music video for the song even got a fair bit of early play on either CMT or GAC. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be and they faded back into the country music ether. This would've been just a few years after Lady A broke out, and Gloriana also had a little bit of success w/ coed vocals. I just wonder, if THE FARM would have tried to break out now in 2022 (after the success of Jimmie Allen & Breland) if maybe it would've been a different story..

I think I’d have to say “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do” by Brantley Gilbert. Not sure how successful it is, but I think it deserves more notice

oh sure, except that was a #1 hit. Maybe if Gilbert hadn't made his whole career up on putrid songs like "Bottoms Up" or "The Weeknd" or "Small Town Throwdown", his good songs might have been more "popular" and noticed if that's what you mean.

Agreed on so many of these songs! Wanted to share a story about Garth Brooks and "Tacoma" - as part of the launch for Man Against Machine in 2014, Garth joined Twitter and did a secret listening party for the album at The Independent (a club size venue in San Francisco). When he introduced "Tacoma" he made this beautiful speech about how the last song on each of his albums is reserved for a special song/his favorite. He mentioned it was written by a very talented songwriter named Caitlyn Smith and you could tell he absolutely adored that song. In that listening session, "Tacoma" was far and away the stand out. I was bummed about his resistance to streaming mostly because I wanted to hear that song again. When I stumbled upon Caitlyn's 2016 EP, I had forgotten her name but recognized "Tacoma" immediately. Honestly, I think her version is so much better - it's more powerful and shows off her voice incredibly.

In the past several years, a lot of the independent and small label artists have released songs to radio, but did not get the traction they deserved. Music Row had a couple of Cody Jinks songs that reached top 20 on their radio charts. Ain't A Train is a good one. It did not made it to Mediabase and Billboard large market charts, but made it to the small market mainstream charts. Ain't A Train by Cody Jinks hit the top 25 for Billboard Country Radio Indicator charts. Tiffany Woys Loved By You, James Robert Webb Stealing Home and many others that had good runs on different country charts, but not the major ones. Carolina Jones Come In (But Don't Make Yourself Comfortable) is off an Independent Label that is outside the system is the latest one that gain a lot of traction but got stalled at number 40.

In the Music Or Lose It Top 20 Songs last year, I picked a number of country songs that never seemed to become hits: Yola - Stand For Myself; Grace Potter - Release; Seaforth - Breakups. The country music entertainer who deserved better by country music of all time is Kim Richey (Those Words We Said, I Know). Her songs just weren't the same sound as the 90s/00s of that era so she wasn't embraced well by CMT and country radio in CA back then.
