John Starks had the fighting spirit of a man possessed. As a big bandwagon Jordan fan, I couldn't forget him as a kid. He was relentless. When I found out later he went undrafted, my respect for him grew further. Dude really fought for everything. He was an OG jordan stopper...
I saw it on TV and you kept asking yourself , as he was rushing hell-bent to the basket, where the hell was he going with that ball because there was nothing there for him. And then he makes this fabulous move around and up over Grant and then Jordan , slam dunks the ball and all in one motion spins around and sails up the court. John Starks should never ever have to pay for anything in the city of New York. It is the best dunk, because he was a “little” guy and this was in the heat of the playoffs against the world’s best team.
the way John spins and stumbles just adds to the awesomeness of the move... He wasn't known for dunking in traffic but he did it. This is was HIS "Baseline Move"
One of the greatest dunks of all time. I saw it live on TV. I hated the Nicks but I loved John Starks for his heart and passion on the court. You just had to love him. That dunk is in my top 5 of all time. Mainly because it was super hard to do. Against MJ and Grant in the air. In a conference final. That series was more like war on a battlefield and Starks just pulled that one of. I will never forget that moment. Respect!!!
Starks had so much heart, favorite all time Knick. I'll never forget that moment, come back here once in a while just to see it again. IMO, that was the greatest dunk in a real game situation in NBA history. So many elements at play, importance of time and place, creativity, courage, pure athleticism, using opposite hand, and over Jordan. Epic.
That's my player right there , i never watched the Knicks as religiously after he left that team. So glad that he had HIS moment to shine as bright as any player. I have the poster, i have the t shirt of the dunk i went all out. I think John Starks might have ben the most loved player in the NBA for a short period of time. I used watch games when they played away and you would always see John Starks jersey in the crowd no matter where the knick were.
I watched this on TV "live" lol. All my friends were Bulls fans, and I was the long Knicks fan. We are at a bar, drinking beer watching this game it was so awesome when Starks had this dunk! I went nuts. There are so many great Knicks and Bulls highlights from those years. This brought back so many memories. The Knicks made MJ and the Bulls earn those titles going through them back then.
John, Patrick, Anthony, Allan, Latrell, Larry, Charles and the rest. Thank you for the long night hours I spent in Europe watching NBA. It was a great time.
I was also 15. Never looked at it like that, but you may be right. Old enough to truly know and understand the NBA and still young enough to idolize pro athletes. You go to school the next day and it's all anyone's talking about. That Gatorade ad w/the "be like Mike" jingle that felt like they ran it 50 times a day back then? We were in the caf/gym/hallways singing "I wanna be like John", hitting the high note and everything. Sure that's corny looking back on it, but we really thought the Bulls were done...
I was a die hearted K****s Fan back then. That was the dunk that sink the k****s forever. It was a curse. Ive had High blood Pressure since. That dam GOAT killed us.
Listen, I'm a huge MJ/Chicago Bulls fan, but they wouldn't be as amazing as they are without a villain. and in my childhood, sometimes, the knicks were that villain. I promise I never forgot this dunk. Got under my skin and hit me into my core. But now, 30 years later, that moment was wonderful. Good for you John. The
Those Sunday afternoon games at Madison Square Garden were so powerful and energetic that you could feel it all over New York City. It really did not matter who the Knicks were playing because that energy was so vibrant and inspirational during those Sunday afternoon games and it could be felt all over the streets and avenues of New York. That is how powerful it was in those days!!!
MAN I love watching that play. That was when the Knicks had a team, with a bench. You never knew who would be the one to go off. I appreciate the Knicks of the 90's. There were some great highlights. At times they reminded me of NY street ball. Thanks for the post.
Love these descriptions, especially the word “unexpected.” I was on the other side of the building in the blue seats and will never forget it. All of a sudden you saw the left hand with the ball over everything and everyone headed full-speed for the rim. Then he jammed it with such force. Starks had plenty of hops but his jams were usually on the break, rarely in the half-court and never with the left hand. On top of all that he sealed the game with that play so, yeah, it caused an earthquake.
I was a bulls fan and used mj and the bulls as motivatition but i loved such moments and are still hungry after such intens sportevents like bulls vs knicks. Thx John Starks, you made the game to a Thriller.
John Starks said I've been to the mountaintop And I looked down and seeeeeeen the look on MJ's face when that basketball 🏀 got slammed through the rim on that play 🤣🤣🤣
This is the DUNK that Jordan fans avoid talking about. Not only did Starks stuff Jordan on one of his shots,he POSTERIZED him with that left handed dunk! I'm no knicks fan,but I was happy to see Starks make Jordan look stupid. That's My view & opinion.
Back when my Knicks were scrappy and respectable Thank you Daddy for giving me season tickets Maybe as you old man Johnny boy was always a MSG favorite
When you look at this video all you can do is smile, then think man, that Jordan did it to us again. We were just another victim to the greatest of all time. We can't feel that bad because he did it to everyone and cost so many greats a chip
Yeah you right about that. Doesn't change the fact it didn't stop Starks here! But that's what was great about this era. Jordan was so good you had no choice but to step up your game.
We watched that game on TV ! That made Starks known to everybody , not just NBA fans. Front page on most news papers ! He always was a tough hard nose player !
Watching that game live, when that dunk happened, it was like seeing the knicks win a championship. Sadly, I am still waiting for a knicks trophy, but when it happens, it will be as good as that dunk.
This was a defining moment that made me jump up and say Now What! This was the 90's man!... title or no title Starks made me believe I could conquer anything that night! ALL HEART BABY! And yes Jordan jumped all up in the picture and he got some too... in my opinion....
In this game Starks blocks Jordan straight up in his face AND dunks on him straight up in his face LEFT-HANDED, while Jordan has never blocked OR dunked on Starks, even though Starks was far smaller!!
Always a Laker fan. Hated (on the court) the Bulls. Their battles against the Knicks were classic and I still think the best rivalry in the NBA. Starks was (is) a guy I root for and this play was one of the most memorable I've had the pleasure of watching.
Starks is so underrated. I really loved watching him play. I see these lebron fans give such disrespect to Starks and many of the other knick players. Even Patrick gets disrespected by lebron fans. BRO HE DUNK ON HORACE GRANT FIRST JORDAN AND PIPPEN CAME AFTER A LATE REACTION ONLY THE KNICKS CAPTURE MOMENTS WITHOUT CHAMPIONSHIPS SINCE 1973 A MIRACLE ON 34 STREET MOMENTS 😂😂😂😂😂
Although throughout the numerous Bulls-Knicks playoff series in the 90s there were plenty of memorable plays and great moments, this is the one that stands out forever if you’re a Knicks fan. Starks was never known to be a dunker, yet he pulled off this sensational baseline jam in several guys‘ face. It seems like an indefinable something pushed him up towards MSG’s ceilings, and a right-hander throwing it down with the left is something that comes about very rarely in slam-dunking. The incident wouldn’t be as beautiful if not for the block Ewing sets for Starks, rudely dumping slender B.J. Armstrong out of bounds and clearing the baseline for his shooting guard. This is clearly an offensive foul, however sneaky Patrick Ewing does it in a way there is a chance the ref will overlook the foul, and no ref in the world would’ve called a foul after what they exclusively witnessed 2 seconds later! Starks seems dizzy and unconscious when his buddies acknowledge the miracle move in the following time-out, probably displaying the move before his eyes. I’m sure he himself couldn’t believe what he had just done, i.e. one of the greatest in-game dunks of all time.
How did ESPN the Jump leave this out ? Over MJ & Grant with the Left hand!!!!! Game 6 Eastern conference finals.30 seconds left to seal the W?!?! The TOTAL DISRESPECT!!
If you put a special compilation of every dunks between the Bulls and the Knicks in their rivalry era, you're going to be jumping off your seats. Btw John Starks dunk definitely has to go number 3.
As a Bulls fan, there are only 3 plays that I liked from opponents. This one; the Iverson crossover; and the Miller game winner. Everyone else who tried a Bull can pretty much eat dirt.
Those bulls/knicks games back then were so intense your butt was not leaving the couch unless a commercial came on or a time out was used, because you never knew what kind of crazy nonsense would go down, any bulls and knicks fans from back then know exactly what i'm talking about!
Sorry Pat We, Scottie wasn't on the floor for that play. He had already been ejected from the game on a technical. But one of my favorite Knick moments and Starks was my favorite.
That dunk is timeless.
That dunk is so special it deserves its own statue right in front of madison square garden

Hell yeah
It’s a horrible overrated stupid dunk how in the world is that dunking over Jordan 😂Knicks fans just hype up anything
Damn right! Exactly! 👍🏻👍🏻👌🏻👌🏻😀
Dunk wasn't on MJ though lmao
John Starks always had tremendous heart. This is one moment where he would not be denied and it was AWESOME!
I will never ever forget Starks, he made me understand the soul of basketball.
as a new york kid from the 80s/90s this was the best moment of my childhood!
Yesssssss
Where did you see it?😮
Man there is nothing like MSG when the Knicks are relevant in all of sports. This play was incredible
I was a bulls fan and hated Starks.
Looking back, I’m a Starks fan; great player with a TON of heart.
Oh how convenient you realize your a fan of Starks!

Im a long time Knicks fan, and I always loved him for his heart.

My favorite Knick! Fearless, full of heart and passion. Love that dude!
I remember it like it was yesterday. I jumped off the couch and almost hit my head on the ceiling. Highest I've ever jumped

I loved the Bulls as a kid but that dunk was pretty special!
John Starks was a BEAST offensively and defensively
2021 and : "... We are still talking about it..." : Thanks J. S. forever !!!
Grant and Jordan got posterized by Starks. 💯
Tony Cash sorry but it was Grant and Jordan came into the play later!!!!!
@@dwightlove3704. Aight Aight lol.

@@dwightlove3704. True indeed bro. I'm a die hard Knick fan from New York.

more than a basketball - magic!

They almost won a championship.

And also the richest basketball team, go figure
They almost won a championship.
Those Knicks intros were the best in the 90s

6'2" and left handed
But lots of hater comments

At guard 6’2” from Oklahoma state doesn’t have the same ring to it; he’s definitely 6’2-6’3” at best especially Houston towers him at 6’6”
He is 6'5"

who won the series?

Super. Super. Weird.
Every barber shop in the Bronx had that poster on their wall a week later.
Starks was one of those players who didn't have the most skill, but definitely played the hardest...and at times that made him an Allstar!
Come on Knicks!!! Give us a title !!!
The Dunk Poster!
Happy Birthday John Starks!
John Starks is work ethic and fearless .
U watch Lebron, Durant no work Ethic no fearlessness
The tactical explanation shows the players back then were very inteligent..nowadays, not much tactics were needed..u just need to be a good shooter
this man deserve to be inducted in hall of fame

Hated the Knicks at that time but that is the most memorable dunk EVER.

I remember watching this as a 13yr old kid,
Great dunk and ironically the high point in the series for the Knicks.
Bruh the NBA today with 7 footers shooting three pointers. ANY playoff team from the 90’s would be MBA Champs in today’s league!
THAT team should have won the title that year.
Very hot moment in NY
Yo vi ese partido, y aun lo recuerdo como el día que starks se vengo de Jordan.
I love the Knicks defense, you weren't getting no easy layups or dunks against them. Too bad the NBA change the rules against them.
Starks is the best example of tenacity
