Stephen King is definitely a hit or miss author, and I always know when I'm not going to like one of his books. Still, he is one of my favorite authors. Rose Madder, Lisey's story and Duma Key are few of my favorites by him. It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. And well... I think it's time to accept that the cat has adopted you. :)

I read War and Peace for a self-guided literature class one year. Wegot to pick books and the teacher gave them each an assigned point value. (I figured if I was going to read war and peace I should get credit for it!) I actually really liked it but it was hard to keep track of all the characters so I made a character list and it helped a lot!

Pet Sematary and The Long Walk are two of my favourite Stephen King novels. If you want one that isn’t too long, Misery is only 300 pages. Maybe you’d enjoy some of his short story collections. Night Shift has some great stories; ‘The Last Rung on the Ladder’ is one of my favourite things he’s ever written.

The thing about Stephen King is that his writing style, focus and execution changes over the decades. I see that you mainly own more early King, when he was angry, high on drugs and alcohol, and his writing reflects this. The more mature 2000s King writes some gorgeous novels, I would recommend 11/22/63 and Joyland- a beautiful coming of age/mystery thriller/horror novel. I love Stephen King and I think that because he has such a large body of work, that there is something there for everyone.

Stephen King can be really hit or miss. Especially when he was on drugs and after he was in that car accident. But you picked a lot of clunkers. Really enjoyable reads by Stephen King are "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" that you will find in "Different Seasons." "The Body" is also in that book. And it's a great read. "The Shining." That is such a good book with a good ending. It's very different than the film. "Salem's Lot" is very scary and well-written, but it's a lot of work. I like a lot of his short stories in "Night Shift." Especially "One for the Road" and "Children of the Corn." Books to stay away from "The Tommy Knockers," "Needful Things" and "Dreamcatcher." I'm not saying those are bad books. But based on the books you didn't like, don't read those.

The way I think of it is, if you’re going on a journey to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow with a troop of amazing people who give you the best adventure and help you find the meaning of life, only to find no gold at the end of the rainbow. It’s about the journey not the ending. Though the ending of many are fantastic…Pet, 11/22/63, Revival etc. The Dark Tower II and III are like an acid trip.

But, I did read Cell by him and enjoyed it, though the ending is controversial (which is pretty common with King). For me, King is a hit or miss author, and it leads me to not pick up books from him, because there's no guarantee I'll like it. However, I'm enjoying the vlogs and appearances from the kitty!

I've never actually read Stephen King, but a couple of weeks ago we streamed a movie from one of his books. It turned out to be about a mother and son who sometimes turn into cats. Real cats seemed to have a real problem with them, though, and would attack them. They had a weird sort of incestuous relationship going on, and after it was over we looked at each other and said uuummmmm, what was that?!? It was all very strange. War and Peace is actually a really good book. But it jumps around between scenes of, well, war and peace. If you don't like reading about battles and battle strategy, some of it may get tedious.

I used to be a huge Stephen King fan. The Dark Tower was actually my favorite set, but I kinda drifted away from him once he finished it. Now, I pick up something every now and again. I've heard a similar reaction as yours to beginning of the Dark Tower, (I actually liked what he was trying with The Gunslinger) but the rest is told in a very different style. I also think some of my favorites - Insomnia, Bag of Bones, The Dark Half, aren't generally as liked. Whereas, the popular ones like Carrie and It didn't do it for me.
I see a lot of people recommending Dolores Claiborne. Both it and Gerald's Game are about sex abuse. The movies are well done. DC particularly. Good luck.

Christine was pretty good. Don’t remember too clearly as I read it almost 40 years ago when I was a teen 😂

I used to read Stephen King in the past but I always preferred his novels that he originally wrote under Richard Bachman, like The Long Walk, The Running Man and Thinner.

Just to let you know there was a TV series based on Dead Zone. It started in 2002. It is on several streaming channels in the states but I'm not sure which ones it might be on in Canada.

I haven’t read King since high school (when I was obsessed.) Since then my tastes tend to be more litfic, and his books are obviously more focused on plot than beautiful, nuanced writing, but I think I’d still love The Stand and The Shining. His later books were DNF’s for me so I’ve given up on him, but if you’re going to read more King I think you’d like those two, especially The Stand.

I'm curious if he has the same types of comments in his newer books. He's very hit or miss for me and because of that it's been hard for me to pick them up and give them a chance but I have a whole collection cause of second hand shops. (Plus the more I read the more I find horror authors I like more)

About "the comments" yes they are still in there, there are fewer of them and they are a little bit less gross.
Can I ask what other horror authors you have discovered?

If you want to read a Stephen King book that’s genuinely good, try Danse Macabre. It’s a non-fiction book about the horror genre. It’s great, though he disses William Peter Blatty, author of The Exorcist, and manages to sound petulant and jealous while doing it. As far as King’s fiction goes, I did like The Dead Zone, Pet Semetery, and ‘Salem’s Lot. The Shining, not so much. I love how he criticizes fans of the Stanley Kubrick film for liking it “just because it’s scary” and criticizes the movie in general for being misogynistic. Sorry, WHO’S misogynistic?! LOL. Despite mostly liking the three novels I mentioned, I’ve pretty much given up. Like you said, it’s not worth wading through a thousand pages of hot mess that is frequently offensive just to get to a crappy ending that screams “I’m out of ideas”. I don’t think he’s a great writer. If anything, the extreme lack of editing almost gives off self-published vibes.

I read „Carrie“ by him, loved it, then proceeded to read „Dead Zone“ and „the Shining“ and hated both🫠 I did start „IT“ as a kind of last chance to Stephen King, because I had already bought it, BUT I absolutely adored it (except for THAT scene of course). Now I want to read more of him😂

Dead Zone is the most readable King book, I read it in 24 hours in HS. Yes, his endings are often weak, but the writing is so great. KEEP Wizard and the Glass it is a flashback book and amazing. Maybe you'll "get" what the Dark Tower is about with Roland's backstory. Good ending "bad" book (for me) Revival, Duma Key better book, the ending also gives the creeps.
