Totally agree on the 2024 Goldwing seat. My 2012 was so comfortable and I had concerns with the new seat, not any more. The 2024 is just as comfortable to me as the 2012, I have done 11 hours in the saddle with no issues. Love the 2024 manual transmission Wing, amazing ride. I’m getting 42 mpg consistently at 75 mph, Arkansas mountains last weekend. 52 mpg. Good enough for me, approximately 6 mpg better than the 2012 Wing. Best Bike I have ever been on period.

My only concern is that keeps the hydraulic hoses under pressure, perhaps causing them to stretch or weaken over time. I am looking into this for a possible future solution.

If I use the Velcro strap, it would only be for a few minutes just to take pictures along the way and not an extended time. But it's better than the bike rolling off the kickstand or sliding backward. 👍

@@cruisemansgarage - I’ve just bought a front brake lock. This was after parking in town in Ireland on a steep incline and talking about malicious release of the parking brake, and the potential damage to callipers from disk locks-and rolling forward “unsupervised.” Do you believe the constant pressure on brake hoses is a significant concern with brake lever locks?

A couple of years ago, a friend & I rode to Cripple Creek, Colorado, during which I got 57 mpg on 2 tankfuls & 58 on a 3rd. Now we were riding fairly conservatively, but a year later, I got about the same results on the same 2018 Goldwing DCT, to Loveland. I was amazed, but can't explain why it occurred, as i generally don't get the same mileage in California. Maybe I misbehave more here. In Colorado, I realized I forgot to adjust the parking brake prior to leaving, with it not holding as per your experience, but I broke out the tools, adjusted it, & it worked fine for the rest on the trip, even on some steep inclines. I've since had knee replacement surgery, so no riding updates.

    Hey Cruiseman!
Congratulations on a spectacular road trip, it sounds like you and Robert had big fun! I took a trip across country to Atlanta, GA from San Diego, CA and back through Arizona/Grand Canyon, in June! I didn't keep any milage records, but did check milage periodically and I got 52/53 mpg and I used 87octane all the way there and back. My Goldwing is a 2023 DCT. I'm glad you and Robert had mostly a trouble free trip as I did with the exception of the park brake issue/low tire pressure.

I have a 2018 Gold Wing DCT and it's parking brake performed similarly. It is a cable linkage and if you worked with brakes in the 1960s they are the same design and very easy to adjust. A one time adjustment at the rear hub and the brake has worked flawlessly for the past 5 years.

If your handbrake doesn't work, your rear wheel is poorly balanced. You can find out by starting the motorcycle on the main stand, shifting into gear and adding gas. If the motorcycle shakes, the brake disc will also shake, which will wear down the brake pads.

Great video Cruiseman! When I bought my Sena Impulse helmet it came with a dongle that plugs into a USB-C cable on one end, and the proprietary Sena Impulse connector on the other end. I put a USB A and C charging line (from the battery) in my Goldwing trunk. Whenever I stop for more than 10 minutes, be it to stretch, get a cup of coffee, have some lunch, or whatever, I plug in my helmet. The helmet has yet to run out on me on any given day as a result. And the charging amperage is low enough that I am not worried about it killing my bikes battery.

My 2024 spends most of its time as a commuter in town. My in town milage is averaging 32 MPG. When I am out on the highway, I get in the mid 40's. I haven't had much of a chance to get it out on the road and just let it run. Compared to my 2015 Goldwing, the in town was 26 MPG and the highway was 37 MPG so to me this is a significant improvement in milage and performance.

I just got home from a 5,000 mile road trip on my white 2018 DCT Tour with 45k miles on the clock. FWIW, I’ll briefly share my report, much of it similar to yours:
Motorcycle: The bike of course performed flawlessly, except my brakes got mushy, and there was a howling sound when I applied the front brakes at highway speeds. My parking brake was also useless, but I did forget to release it a couple of times before.
Petformance and MPG: The BT Moto tune really lights up the bike, but I also experienced slow speed lurching in Tour mode, to the point where I had to ride around small towns and parking lots in Rain mode. At highway speeds, I still need to drop it a gear to quickly pass traffic. I probably ride a little more aggressively than you do, and MPG averaged 45. It dropped to 34 MPG riding 80 MPH through headwinds on I80 from CA to UT. Playing Valentino Rossi in Sport mode in the twisties also saw an MPG drop
Ergos: The combination of Corbin seat, highway pegs and Klock Werks recurve windshield worked great for my6’5” self. The seat sits me 2” further back and puts my in a sport touring lean, which is what I’m used to and great on my back and neck. I don’t have my backrest on because it interferes with my airbag vest, so I leaned against my backpack strapped to the rear seat (Roc Straps are awesome!). Only problem was a stinging feeling in my butt after a few hours. I have tried several ways to eliminate it, but nothing has worked so far.
Visibility: my first trip with my Clearwater Erica auxillary lights, I normally keep them near the lowest setting, and man I was seen! I could tell it from the behavior of traffic around me. The highest setting will pierce your eyeballs, but I had them on when I was riding a mountain road at night, and it was like riding in daylight. I spotted critters way before having to react. Other lighting like Pathfinder LED cowl lights, bright fog lights, lower rear side case lights, modular brake lights, etc. all were great.
Gadgets: Problems with CarPlay, Sena 20S, iPhone 13 and Carlinkit staying connected. Initial connection was good after following your settings advice, but spontaneous disconnects and reconnects still occurred. I suspect the Sena is the culprit since it also happens when I connect directly to CarPlay. Overall, it’s a fussy process to use all this stuff. Made me long for the days with my simple Triumph Trophy where all I had to do was keep it running, keep the oil and gas leaks to a minimum and cast a spell on the Lucas electrics so they would actually do something.
Climate: Temp ranges were from 40-104F, and a day of rain. My riding gear adapted well once I anticipated better what layers to use. We take this for granted, but the lack of heat from the engine cooking my legs is a godsend!
Storage: I learned how to pack light over my LD trips, so there was adequate space for everything, including a cooler for food I pack (I avoid taking it in the shorts with high gas statin roadkill and fast food joint prices). Nothing to store my helmet in is the drawback, a problem I didn’t have with my old Roadglide
I can add more if anybody wants

Chris, great vlog. Regarding fuel economy I would suggest it was a wind drag issue in conjunction with lower Ron ( value fuel ) - the Honda’s are well renowned for slow recalibration when it comes to higher / lower Ron rated fuels especially in high elevations ( it has something too do with anti knock protection system) - they also recalibrated the volumetric injector pulse to assist in higher temp / catalytic efficiency too meet the increasing higher emissions requirements. I am eagerly waiting on the release of the 50th Anniversary Edition. Stay safe/ Stay upright my friend 👍👍- as far as the handbrake - I just don’t understand why they don’t use a E brake or a small hydraulic actuator purely for safety reasons ( just a thought )

Cruiseman - I have a 2021 bagger model GW DCT with 28,000 miles on it. The best gas mileage I have ever had was 52 mpg on a recent trip on the twisty mountain roads of eastern Tennessee. Highway mileage is always less, usually around 42-45 mpg. I always use 87 octane. I see no reason for Premium, since Honda does not recommend it. My longest days have been just over 600 miles. The stock seat works well for me. No problem doing 10-12 hours. I have adjusted the parking brake at the back wheel when needed, and I agree this is not a good design for an otherwise great bike. I would also like to see more powerful stereo speakers installed on the next model. I have ridden with several clubs, and have never seen anyone else with a brake-free helmet light. I am surprised that they have not sold more in the Mid-Atlantic areas where I ride. My new Sena Impulse helmet worked well when communicating with a BMW riding partner. Good clear connection until we became completely separated.

I can't speak from personal experience since I have been riding my '82 GL1100 Interstate for the past 32 years, but you might look at what could cause your lower gas mileage.
Wind resistance - probably not because you have the same windshield and deflectors as on your 2018. The increase in trunk size shouldn't make a difference and wouldn't explain the difference between your bike and Don's.
Drag somewhere in the drivetrain. Also, are your brakes dragging slightly.
A difference in tune on your individual bike that could cause it to run a little bit richer.
You might benefit from having DFW Honda take a look at it.
I've been subscribed for years and always watch your videos. They let me ride a newer bike vicariously through you.

I wonder if the DFW Honda service manager (Jacob) would have any thoughts on your mileage difference with Robert? On a trip I took to the Smokies, my 2021 DCT averaged 47-48 on regular unleaded. In that arena, I was handily outperforming all my buddies who were riding with me (two Harleys, one ~2006 Goldwing). I don't have a custom windshield or any air deflectors. Thanks for your trip recap - as always, it was very helpful and informative!

I'm having the same gas mileage experience. I could easily get 50 mpg on my 2018 DCT if I was running less than 75 mph. My 2023 6 speed manual (9,000 miles) is averaging 45 mpg. Lowest I've gotten has been 36 running 80 mph with slight head wind in South Dakota and my best has been 52 with a tank of non-ethanol premium riding 65 mph in South Dakota. My friend has a 2018 manual tranny and on a recent trip he was getting 4 to 5 more mpg than me. My 2023 also feels like it has less power than my 2018 did.

I loved my 19 goldwing but its tune Honda updates the tech with radar cruise control as well as adding extra power to the engine. I totaled mine unfortunately and bought a K1600 GTl. Took some work but I have it almost as comfortable as my goldwing. I do miss the dct and parking mode but the power on the bmw is so intoxicating compared to the Honda . Not to mention the 7 gallon gas tank allows quite a bit of extra mileage between stops. Both are excellent bikes!

  • @robertwisness978

My 2021 DCT is my eighth Gold Wing. By far, all-day comfort is my biggest requirement in a touring bike and that is where the Gen 6 falls short of the other generations. I was not surprised that I had to buy a better saddle, windscreen and air deflectors to improve the comfort but you should not have to do that on a $30,000 motorcycle. It would not cost Honda any more to just build it right in the factory.

  • @ericd701

I agree with you on the parking brake, Honda should have done better. What I do is I keep a Velcro strap in my center storage box just in case the parking brake doesn't want to hold I can use it to hold the front brake lever on.
For gas mileage on my 22 I'm getting 49 to 54 miles per gallon and i drive slightly aggressive. My buddy and I did a road trip slightly of 3000 miles and I was getting better mpg. We both have 2022 models. I was using a gallon less it seemed at each gas stop. Don't know if its related but his is one of the motors that has the tick when first started cold.

I just completed a 10,000+ mile trip on my 2018 DCT Airbag Tour. It was an 8 week trip broken up for two months following an accident in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. My rear tire slid right out from under me at a circle intersection. I cannot explain it. I suffered a fractured rib and scapula. The bike and I we’re both ready two months later. My bike now has over 102,000 miles. I love the bike. I am thinking about triking it. Do you have any recommendations??

Robert essentially has the same windscreen. And, it is the same windscreen I had on my 2018, which got better mileage.

    • @cruisemansgarage
      @cruisemansgarage  3 місяці тому

We were both topping off our tanks as full as we could get them. It is possible that one of us filled more than the other, but I doubt by more than a cup or two of fuel. Not enough to make for a consistent 4-5 mpg discrepency.
