You also can create a new, empty layer above the background, set the source to "Current layer and below". Now the inpainting draws on the new layer and the whole process is non destructive. The original background stays untouched.
Indeed Current layer and below option is a great way to keep all editing on a separate layer excellent tip! (I may borrow it for Tips and Tricks from viewers vol2 ^_^)

It just doesn't work the way you show it. For example, I make a freehand selection, hit delete, and all I see is a scrren of pixels????
Do change your mic and your followers will multiply.

With all my respect, all these tools perform very badly. They are imprecise, they leave spots, the image is blurred. Up close it must look even worse. It's all very unprofessional and low quality.
