George, your PSE videos are outstanding. I'm on a MacBook Pro using the touch pad. No mouse. Selecting subjects via the use of the regular lasso is a bit of a problem. An actual mouse would enable me to keep the pressure on the selection path when doing something like moving the image. But using the touch pad for the lasso causes problems if you need to let go - then the path is terminated. I've found that using the magnetic lasso allows me to release the touch pad and still maintain the lasso's position along the selection path, returning to the touch pad starts just where I left off and can and continue around the selection. I've been able to control the mag lasso so that there is a bit of space between the selection line and the subject allowing for fine tuning in "refine selection." You may want to consider incorporating the mag lasso for folks working on laptops or using touchpads without a dedicated mouse. Just a thought.
Great Tip! I will be doing more remove person videos and I usually will vary the technique I use for each video. Haven't made that many Affinity Photos yet but more are coming. I mostly focus on Adobe products.
George, for Photoshop Elements users, you might consider doing a video on the strong points of Elements and Affinity - how they can be used together. For example I remember one of your videos where you showed how the selection of a hairy subject is best done in Affinity. I would consider adding Affinity if it significantly filled gaps in Photoshop Elements. Lifetime updates would be a strong advantage for Affinity.
Hi George, thank you again for the "fine tips" to make the magic happen! Got subscribed to your new channel and hope it grows for you quickly!!! I would think this could open the door for you also with sponsorship if you ever wanted that option. Best of luck on the projects at hand. I am in the middle of updating hardware so this has been quite an adventure, I had gotten caught a bit behind on newer tech so had to relearn some stuff. All for the better in speed and performance. Have a great day and thank you again for all you do!!! Rich
Thanks Rich, unfortunately this split will basically kill any chance of getting sponsorships. I need at least 50,000 subs before anyone even considers offering a sponsoreship deal. Doubt that I will ever get that again with the Photoshop Elements stuff, it is basically a dying market. I originally added the Minecraft videos to save the main channel which worked great, because those videos brought in the views. That is still the case, I just don't get that many views or subs for the photo stuff. So not looking for getting any new sponsors for the Photo stuff and the Minecraft videos aren't right for sponsorships unless I had over 1 mill subs which will never happen there. What I am doing though is setting up 2 new channels specifically for getting views and sponsors that are apart from the Minecraft and Photo stuff and those will be far more successful. They are both business and online sales oriented which is what I do most of each day anyway, although not as interesting for me as the Photo and gaming stuff. Thanks for sticking with me for so many years, always enjoy these short chats.
This will work with almost any background, depends on your skill level. I show things that beginners can do. Random backgrounds are easier, but not the only way it will work. I have done removals with very detailed backgrounds, just takes more time. What is even easier is to just remove the whole background and replace with an entirely new background.
Was this challenging photo to edit? Yes it was. Was it still a slopy job? Yes, kind of. I don't see point to using selection refinement when you already did selection by hand anyway. Maybe use pen tool, and you can do it in one go with then very minor adjustments, in this video you had to do selection basically 3 times over. Background look too sharp, use some, have completely different bokeh quality, but given how much background you had to begin with it doesn't look bad, maybe use some blur here and there mostly to soften hard bokeh edges so it looks better. It's sad Affinity don't have automatic subject selection still.
Was this a callenging photo to edit? No, it was easy. Was it still a sloppy job? Yes, I do fast and dirty in my UA-cam videos because I am showing a technique, not the best way to get a finished result. If this were a paying job I would have spent 2 hours on it and it would have been perfect. That isn't what I was trying to do in the video. The refine selection is an excellent technique to get a better selection around areas like hair and the hat, things you can't do by hand, no matter what tool you use. If I had done this with the pen tool I would still have refined the edge around the hair and hat because it would still have needed it. I left the background as is because this is not a video about replacing the background, it is a video about removing a person. There is no such thing as hard bokeh edges, bokeh is a specific blur technique invented in Japan which refers to blurring light sources in night time photos so that they appear as round spots. No bokeh in this image. Here is a video of mine that shows bokeh ua-cam.com/video/OarMeHA9xvs/v-deo.html.
@@HTGPhoto Ye, sorry it wasn't hard, gota admit that. Also just watched yours background replacement vid, and it's much better imo, when it comes to making selection. For just removal of person from photo also you just need to mask out what you don't want to remove, so maybe that got me wrong impression. Anyway it's cool you keep looking at older vids, appreciate you taking your time to reply
@@Deruzejaku Thanks! I keep tabs on all my videos, on both channels, and I try as much as possible to respond to all comments. Someday I may get too big on UA-cam to allow me to do that but right now even my big channel is still under 100,000 subs so I am able to stay close with my viewers. So, I am always here for questions, comments, whatever. Right now my Affinity videos are a little out of date since I am putting most of my time into getting another channel going, but once that is over 1000 subs I will start doing videos for the new version of Affinity Photo and may be some for Affinity Designer as well.

Wonderful..! This is just I need! Thank’s so much!
You're so welcome!
Thank you George, you are a great teacher, and your video pace is perfect for us to follow what you are doing. I am now a subscriber!
Thanks for the sub!
Best tutorial!
Wow, thanks!

Good job!

Affinity looks a lot like Photoshop.
Do you have a link to Affinity? Did you have to pay for it or was it free?
Affinity Photo costs around $55 but they occasionally run 50% off sales. Here is the page affinity.serif.com/en-us/photo/
This technique can only work if the rest of the image has plenty of undetailed features so that you can clone stamp
