Follow the steps below to get Xbox audio through headset only and not TV:
1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the menu. In the menu scroll right and select System.
2. Once in System, select Settings
3. In the Settings under the General section, select Volume & audio output.
4. Under the Speaker Audio, ensure sure you have the correct audio output options select for your setup.
- TV connected to Xbox One via HDMI without optical audio cable: Under HDMI audio select Off
- TV connected to Xbox One via HDMI with optical audio cable: Under Optical audio select Off.
5. Under the Headset Audio, ensure sure you have an option selected so that audio plays through your headset.
5. Close the Xbox One, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S settings and then see if this has fixed your audio issues.

For people still having trouble turning off the audio, read and do this
In Volume & Audio output, you need to go to Additional Options and tick the box that say ''Mute Speaker Audio When Headset Attached''

So i have to change that manually every time that i want to play with a headset? That’s ridiculous! As someone who has just switched from a ps4 this is so disappointing. The i plug the headset off it should automatically switch to tv and when the headset is on it should automatically switch to headset, thats not difficult!
Just mute your TV, way easier.

Just a heads up for anyone, like me, who was still struggling to fix it. I got a Series S and got it working.
In Volume & Audio output, you need to go to Additional Options and tick the box that say ''Mute Speaker Audio When Headset Attached''

Cannot turn the Speaker HDMI option off... With jack plugges in it's greyed out.. with jack removed I get a Check your Audio receiver message!!! WHY is this so frikkin complicated? (Micro$oft obviously!)
I have an Xbox Series S. Just got it. If you go into settings, volume/audio output, and then additional options there's a box you can check to mute your speaker (TV) when your headset is plugged in. Check that and it will mute your TV when you plug in your headset. I assume it's the same for the X as well.
God only knows why it has to be that complicated but I figured it out.

This doesn't work anymore, as of last firmware update. Now, the nearest you can get is by muting your TV. All audio still goes through the headset, so it's the same effect, it just sucks if you have a TV that shows an obtrusive muted icon onscreen.

Yeah that’s true it’s so annoying I just experienced this yesterday it was so annoying. I sat there trying to figure out why it was doing that for like 3 hours. The sounds kept coming out of the TV at the same time it was coming out of the headset. It kept giving me an error everytime I tried to turn off the HDMI Tv speakers.
So is there a way to fix it? Because i literally can't get it through my headset

I would submit feedback until it's fixed. I just did. I don't use the tv until everyone is in bed and I don't check the volume especially when I throw on ps4 for apex because there is no profile sync for it and the headset is automatically on while audio for the tv is off. Play a few and the kick on the xbsx and a loud ass humming sound for the console just blows up the speakers and about wakes everyone up. So dumb. How is it that a ps4 can do that but a new one just can't. I think like a petition we should submit until it's fixed. That will be our signs, as we surround our circle chanting, "we will make the switch, until their is a fix!"
It's much easier now but took a min to find, hit the Xbox button and on the sidebar go down to the speaker on the bottom right (audio & music) and go down to headset chat mixer & balance your game sound vs your voice chat on the slider

You can't turn off HDMI audio now. Not on the Series X anyway. So this doesn't work. Looks like we're stuck having to have audio both through the TV and headset and turn the volume down on the TV.

Is there a way to have both like PlayStation where it’s smart enough to recognize when your headset is on and it stops the tv speakers and pushes to headset... I don’t wanna have to do this every time I wanna switch...

Dude for real. The Xbox is such a rad machine but this seems like an oversight. Their entire audio set up seems years behind the rest of the console.
@@SpaghettiBurritos indeed. And another overnight is the no copy paste button on the keyboard. But that aside Sony has the whole console as an oversight. The Bluetooth options are close to useless the no browser on ps5 the dumb microphone on the controller always on the terrible video folder on PS4 that requires you to be connected to psn otherwise it's useless to watch yt and Netflix if they hack the network. Not letting u organize your video apps because they wanna get paid for ads in said folder, the shit design that if ur CMOS battery dies you can't even play CD games. It's lots and lots of things to say bad about Sony. Things they get right they mess up with updates later on like the parties.

On serious x and s all you do is go to general> volume audio outputting >additional options and click mute speaker audio when headset attached

This didn’t work for me. When I try to turn off all of the speaker audio, I get an error saying “church your audio receiver: there was a problem using this setting. Make sure your audio receiver supports it. Also, make sure to choose at least one audio setting”
Bruh when you got to tv sound just turn off 1 setting leave open optical sounds

For some mysterious reason Xbox behaves differently than literally any other device on Earth. "Oh, you connected headset? Let me play TV sound for you". Weird design. I wrote support to add auto-mute feature and I recommend you to do the same. The more votes the bettet chance they will add it.

I had to turn on "Optical audio" to Stereo Uncompressed, even though I don't have an Optical cable connected, in order to be able to turn "HDMI audio" to Off. Which prevented any noise coming from the TV speakers and only the actual Headset to make any noise.

I don't know if this is going to help anybody but I did everything he said in the video and I still wasn't getting no audio through my headset until I just did my headset chat mixer. I had mine set to where I can only hear chat that's why I couldn't hear any gameplay audio I own an Xbox One S and this works!

I have an issue. I did exactly what you said and it worked perfectly for the first few days. However, now I'm getting the dreaded "Check your audio receiver" error code: 0x80b0009. I've done nothing different, so I don't understand how it worked one day and not the next. The only thing I can think of is that my Xbox Series X did an update last night. Could the update have just screwed the entire audio system up?

Whenever I click my headset on it doesn't let you select anything on the speaker audio section... Its a dark and greyed out and doesn't let me do it through the headset
You need to change headset audio to Stereo uncompressed first, then it will allow to to change speaker audio

I don’t even have that option in the middle. It’s grade out. Incredible to me how difficult this is compared to PlayStation. This is my first Xbox since the 360. On ps5 and 4 it takes 5 seconds to do and isn’t hard at all. I had to google how to do it in the Xbox and I still can’t get it working :/
Hey Im on the serious s and it doesn't have a option to turn speaker off I'm having issue will all my headsets I have a Bluetooth one and a cable on and one just plays my audio but can talk to another my Bluetooth it's letting me talk but no Audio so if I wire it it lets me hear audio but no talk

I have Sennheiser PC38x wired headset and as soon as I plug them in I'm getting minimal sound through the headset and some through my TV. Also the middle menu for "Speaker Audio" is grayed out with Headset Format already selected

I have both PS5 and Xbox x an low key the Xbox is kinda shitty , the interface is all over the place audio still plays on tv when plugging in headphones so you gotta do these extra steps . PS5 is so clean an simplified I mean you plug head set in an the audio plays where it should everything is easy to find with a button away … idk

My fix was changing the Hadset Chat Mixer option, you have to do this from chat party Options.
For me when nothing was working, I just had to plug and unplug my headset. I was getting audio coming in through it and the speaker and it was because it was connected but the Xbox didn't realize it was connected
