Had all the fun watching you shoot. Back in 1975 when I turned 20 I picked up a 336c gold trigger from Kmart (which I could barely afford!). Then I bought another one. Cost plus tax... $106. I knew it would never get any better than that. Today, about 500 million years later I still shoot the one and still hold onto the other. Never had a deer go more than 20 yards after treating with a Federal 150. Woof!

The first rifle I ever bought was a 336! That was October of 1969 and I put a lot of rounds through it. When I gave up hunting, I gave it to my step son and he is still hunting with it! At one time I did have Marlin 336, 35 Remington, and the Marlin 444...... The 444 was quite the brush gun and seemed to tunnel trough most anything that got in its way LOL Thanks for the video... brought back a lot of memories for this old man!

Where I grew up, in Rural America east of the Mississippi river, the .30-30 was THE go to cartridge! Deer, black bear, cougar, bob cat, all kritters in that size range were commonly taken with the family. 30-30. Short barrel carbines with iron sights were limited to about 100 yards. But rifles with 24 or 26 inch barrels and good scopes all easily put down big deer with one shot out to 150, even 175 yards!
It all really depended on the hunter and where he could place the shot. Still an excellent cartridge.

The 336 (in 32 Win Spcl) was my first hunting rifle, a gift from my grandfather, and brings back many pleasant memories. It's a hero. I looked at one, in 30-30, at a gun show, this past Saturday. The only thing that gives it away, as a Ruger, is the little white circle, on the underside of the butt-stock has a red center, instead of a black center. The Ruger name is nowhere on the rifle. Kudos for Ruger for doing that. The wood to metal fit was excellent with no gaps. I think that is called the wood is "proud" to the metal. There is checkering on the wooden fore-arm, and also on the grip as well. This one is a hero, thanks to Ruger doing it right, and also their quality control folks. Well done Ruger!!! I have a "JM" 336 in 30-30 and love it. Bought in 1975 it was my first deer rifle and served me well until a Remington 742 in 30/06 took it's place. That 742 is gone but the 336 remains, the game changer was Federal's 125gr Power-Shok loading, it's now my truck gum during deer season JIC. I did my own loads with 125gr. Sierra's and recently with 130gr Mk 319 130gr bullets at over 2600fps. I handled a new Ruger 336 and found it very worthy and I liked it very much. I gave the owner 25 of my 130gr handloads and we found it to be very accurate at just over 1.5" groups at 100 yards, a very nice rifle IMHO and after a few hundred rounds I believe it will smooth up even more and shoot even tighter.

    Looks gorgeous. Beautifully made rifle.
I’m the proud owner of a 1974 JM 336 which was a bit butchered by a previous owner. They tried to put aftermarket sights on, ruined both dovetails, then hand drilled and tapped the receiver (very wonky non-alignment). I have built a pic-rail to line up with the awful job they did, and have a Romeo 7 on her. I felt it unnecessarily cruel to attempt to put proper irons as the dovetails are filed way too huge.
I’ve put a slew of Ranger Point Precision upgrades (loading gate, lever and quick removal screw, trigger kit) and carved new wood. The original wood furniture is bubble wrapped in my cupboard. She was absolutely pristine, apart from the butchered sights, so my thinking is she was modified as a newly bought rifle, which failed, and then became a safe-queen.
I use her for fallow deer here in Tasmania.

In my neck of the woods a 44 magnum will reach almost all deer opportunities, especially if I load them warm. I don’t know enough of the new cartridge to make any real opinions. But if Ruger makes the rifles barrel a sloppy .431 or greater I’ll have to pass on it. I had a JM in stainless 44 magnum that was very sloppy from the factory and would group 4 to 8 inches at 100 yards.

I also had a couple of 1894 Marlins, JM models, that had those big bores. And they suffered from terrible accuracy as well. Both are gone and now I am waiting with bated breath for the Ruger made version. I sure hope it doesn't disappoint as well😉

    • @davidedward13
      @davidedward13 Рік тому

I love the 44 magnum cartridge. I’ve reloaded for it off and on for over thirty years. I felt I was pretty good with my 9.5” Super Redhawk with 2x scope. 100 yards wasn’t a problem. Now the JM Marlin, to group, I had to go with .429 185 jfp at max loads to get any “accuracy”. Explosion on impact with deer inside of 60yds.
Then I went to .433 cast with a gas check If I remember correctly. Sizing problems and crushing cases. Not much improvement on groups.
I bought a cheap CVA break action and have great groups with different loads. I can use 300 gr projectiles with the 1/20” twist barrel. I hope Ruger goes this direction.

You made my day. First time viewer since your channel popped up when I opened up to work on taxes today. The 336 coming back is the best news I have heard in weeks. Like a lot of folks, a 336 was my first deer rifle in .35 Remington 40+ years ago. Solid, reliable, fills the off hand well with the slight forearm swell and easy to carry. I own 2 and added one for my teenage son. Marlin is up the road a few minutes in Madison, NC. I have clients that work for them who speak highly of their employer and with pride about the quality work they get to do. When I ask what is next , they give me a smile and say just wait. So happy to see an American company with American workers bringing back American classics. The fit and finish look great and, while I do not own anything in .30-30, this video has got me primed to go find one to buy just as soon as tax season ends. Great video. Thanks

I shot one from a bench to learn how to use it since I had not handled a lever gun since I was a teenager. I hit an 8 inch plate at 135 yards over the iron sights while doing that.

Yes! Most shooters, probably without much .30-30 experience, don't recognize that. I load and shoot from 110 gr. to 170 gr. All jacketed bullets. I haven't tried any cast or plated bullets yet. 110 gr. are doing better than 2800 fps. That's in the category of the 250 Savage with 100 gr. bullets. 125gr. Sierras knock deer down right now. 170gr. with Hodgdon LVR (actually, LVR in everything from 140gr up) has changed the game for effective range. The point is, I get good performance from almost any 30 cal. bullet weight. I know some folks load even heavier bullets in .30-30. So far, I don't need to. I have not tried any reduced loads. That may be my next experiment with 110gr. or maybe some plated Berrys.

I really appreciate the camera work on the latest Marlin 336. The choice and finish of the walnut stock by Ruger has brought the quality of the stock back to what was the standard of the original Marlins. The Remlins never came close and the finish was often open pored and cheap looking. Fit and finish also look great. I'll be looking out for one of these when they are released down here in Oz. The .30 wcf, or 30-30, was first introduced in the Winchester model 1894, but it was not the first cartridge to come out for the Winchester '94. The first cartridge, introduced in the model 1894 Winchester, was actually the .38-55, in 1894, and then in 1895, Winchester introduced the .30 wcf, or the .30-30. It was never a black powder cartridge, as was the .38-55, but was introduced with smokeless powder. Lots of folks do not care for it, but it is still very popular, and does great in the woods, or within limits in a more open setting. Like as not, more deer have been taken with a .30-30, since 1895, than probably any other cartridge. One of my favorite calibers, and I ain't alone in that boat.

When I was a young man, I used to have a 30-30 and always regretted selling it. I have requested my gun shop to order me two of these, one for my grandson, and one for me:-)... My 270 likes the Hornady ammo as do I and intend on running the Hornady leverevolution 30-30 ammo in this rifle when I finally get one. I purchased a 336w 30-30 with scope combo from rural king in 2019 brand new in the box for less than $500, it was a "remlin" what we called the remington made marlins down here in the south. but it still shot well. i gave it to my son as his first deer rifle.. and later I came across a 1979 336 JM stamped Marlin in 30-30 at mom and pops gun store for $600 so i snatched it up last year since 35 Rem ammo went from 20$ a box to 60$ then it became non existant. now i have three JM levers, 45-70,, a 35 Rem and the 30-30. the prices and the market have really exploded recently with the gun grabbers in office sending people in a frantic run to the store to buy up everything and forcing up the prices.. but ammo production is ramping back up and the once barren shelves are starting to fill up so eventually the crazy prices will have to fall do to the reversal of supply vs demand. so i see ruger having some sales and price cuts in the future. because really its going to be hard to convence someone who already owns the old tried and true marlins to actually run out and buy a new version of something they already own especially for 2, 3 and even 4 times what they paid for the ones they already own. the reason remlins did so well was the price point. For the majority of the buyers it was a necessity. they are not out for a pretty rifle to hang on the wall, or one to sports shoot and dump brass on the ground. they need it to put food on the table. so price does matter.. and for those of you who know what squirrel, rabbit, possum, quail, pheasant, duck, turkey, as well as deer, all taste like especially when you killed and cleaned it and not some butcher up the road. Then you understand.. not everyone has big pockets...

Henry has done the transfer bar. I had one and really didn't like it. For those of us who grew up with a lever gun we just really want to feel that half cock safety. But I'll be the first to admit that in today's litigenous culture, just a half cock safety is probably not enough for most American companies. So the crossbolt, especially the way Marlin and now Ruger have implemented it is a good compromise. Of course, that's just my two cents😉

that ruger made looks more like my '59 Marlin, darker, checkered, and I love the Marlin pistol gripped stocks with the curved levers as well. May have to have a new one, lol..

Looks to me like Ruger did a really nice job on this one. I've been waiting for this one. Thank you for the video.

This rifle and the Remington 742,7400 are still extremely popular with hunters in New York for Big Game hunting. Sadly Remington discontinued the 742 and 7400. Those rifles are handed down to the next generation of hunters. Nothing beats the beautiful wood and deep blued finish on the Remington BDL Deluxe!

My 7400is a 270 and it’s ironic. I’ve never needed a “fast follow up” shot from this very capable very accurate semi. She’s a once and done meat getter.

Some things were meant to be together... like the Marlin and the Mule. :))
Thanks, George for sharing the awesome news and bringing the Mule out again.
