Babangida is another name on the long list of Nigeria's woeful ex leaders.
First republic politicians had no clue about how to build a viable nation. With no ideas about what to do, they simply used the country's wealth to give themselves luxurious life, leaving the country to drift.
Successive Administration, like Babangida's, followed the same pattern, and the country has been drifting since independence.
Oil wealth gave citizens a false sense security, even though there has never been strategic thinking and plans for the future. Spiraling oil price has unraveled our lack of sustainable economic strategy. Till now, there is still no structure in place to diversify the economy, create opportunities, and arrest further descent into insecurity and chaos. Nigeria is already a failed State because of the cluelessness of leaders like Babangida.
The saddest situation about Nigeria is that we have a population of which over 70% are under age 40 years yet have placed their fortunes and life in the hands of old men who lack the energy to drive progress in the country. I mean look at this Tinubu-IBB meeting, should it not be a meeting between pensioners? Yet it is a meeting to contemplate the future of Nigeria, a future in which these 2 technically have no meaningful stake.

N:B "Trial" in this aspect does not mean "convict" rather to render account of their leadership. If not impunity will continue to thrive. In Brazil Lula was jailed, in Perú, Fuji mori is still in jail, past two presidents of Perú are still in jail, namely Humala Ollanta and his wife, Pedro castillo. The irony is that they performed extremely better than their Nigerian counterparts. In Ecuador, the ex- vice president Jorge Glas seved jail term and he's still being hounded for more charges. He's a very brilliant professor. Nigeria is celebrating failed presidents and failed head of states as elder statesmen and elites. What an irony. Where are you guys heading to. Even as you honor Babangida, don't dishonor Obasanjo due to his political convictions. Obasanjo is a brave man who handed over power from Military to democratic rule.
