I thought my 2004 Odyssey gave up the ghost yesterday with the terrible screeching.
We were ready to junk it but then then I started thinking about the 'starter' and found this excellent how-to. It gave me the confidence to do the job in a parking lot where they car was stranded.
The only problem was when I reused the electrical connector nut. The original has different threading from the Autozone replacement starter.
Tightening the nut sheared the copper threads off.
Oops! Fortunately, I exchanged it in an hour and quickly had the starter swapped out.
It starts and drive fine now.
With this excellent video the job takes less than an hour and likely 30 minutes if you don't goof like I did.

This was extremely helpful to me. My 2001 Honda Odyssey was intermittently not cranking for months, then one day it stopped altogether. After some troubleshooting I narrowed it done to the starter / starter solenoid assembly.
The battery mount was quite difficult to get out. I had to buy a 12 mm ratchet wrench and access the lower rear bolt from the wheel well just as you showed in the video. The bolt is fairly close to the wheel well, up in the front corner. I was able to find it by feel. I also had a very difficult time removing the cable clips on the back side of the battery mount. They did not come off easily. I finally had to pry on the latch with a small screwdriver.
A breaker bar was necessary to get the starter bolts loosened.
Helped me understand what steps are needed and that this is a project most people with tools can easily do, its now done. Thanks Bro!

A great diy opportunity to save yourself ton of cash. In northern New Jersey a starter replacement is $1200 - at a Honda dealer. But all it takes is time, effort, couple of simple tools and of course this video. I still have my original starter in my 2004 odyssey. Thanks, nicely photographed.
Thats one expensive replacement...but if u can save all the labor cost on that..its definitely worth doing..hope u wont have to replace it for a while...but if u ever have to..i hope my video can be helpful..thank you🙂

I’m working through this on my 2004 Odyssey. There are a few differences:
1. There are two small fuse boxes to remove from the left side bracket on my battery.
2. There is an additional wire guide (green colored) to unclip on the back side of my battery.
3. There are two cables attached to zip tie mount points underneath the battery plate that must be removed.
4. The cable clips around my battery did NOT slide off the metal brackets as easily as the ones in this video. The rear green one (which isn’t in this video) and the second one on the back side left of the battery were VERY difficult to remove. Definitely did not just slide off after lifting up on the clip. Lots of elbow grease and leverage required! Eventually I did get them off without breaking things but it was a challenge.
These are just a warning for other folks whose situation may not be as straightforward as the one in the video. Overall the video is very helpful!
I had the same issue with the cable clips on the metal brackets. VERY difficult like you said and took me quite a while. What finally worked was inserting a small screwdriver into the release and prying on it like crazy.
Just looking at my son's car, I was not sure I wanted to do this. But, after watching just about half of your video I thought "piece of cake". And it was - Thanks a ton.

Thanks. Took me about 2.5 hours to install O'Reilly's $200 top line starter. Two hours to wrestle everything free and about half hour to get back together. Probably saved about $500-$600 in labor in my market.

Thanks! Very helpful video. Same issue with my 2004 Odyssey. If you're nimble and want some back pain later, try to NOT remove the battery platform/retainer because the bolts are stripped.....THEN...commence to use an 8" extension to get the 12" bolt out from underneath the starter while working from the top of the engine compartment. I'm gonna be sore tomorrow 🤣

I am having intermittent starting problem. Tested it at Honda dealer service center. The battery is good. It doesn’t start every couple days- then I jumpstart it and it immediately starts. When I turn the ignition the dash lights up makes no sound, no click but does not start. Should I get a new starter installed? Or could the problem be something else?

Was harder than it looked, 2003 was a little different. That lower battery tray bolt was a real bitch. Had to use a cheater bar to get the starter bolts loose. It went back together fairly smoothly. Thanks a bunch could not have done it without your video.

@@backyardchevy328 thank you. Just an update, I got my starter and because of your video, it went wonderful.
I will just add one bit of info I wished you would have added, or will add in the description below, and that's the fact that your van in your video doesn't have this black hard plastic underneath the starter. Mine still had it and it made it a whole lot harder because I wasn't able to get to two of the bolts underneath. One for the battery holder, and the one on the bottom of the starter.
But again, thanks for the informative video without all the chatter for 30 minutes like most do.

Tip: lower rear side battery tray bolt is HARD TO GET AT, BUT you DON'T have to remove it completely, as holes in side of battery tray are SLOTS, so you can lift tray up after JUST LOOSENING the 2 side bolts!

I figured out an incredibly easy option for the bottom bolt. Remove the driver side tire. Peel back the plastic in the wheel well. Connect two extensions together and you can reach straight to the bolt!

I have an '04 Odyssey that needs a new starter. I'm good with tools but I'm not a mechanic. From this video it appears safe to tackle as a DIY project. Is there any trick to engaging the starter with its engine mount or does it just slide in and bolt on?
yea this starters not too bad to swap out, once u get the bolts off it just slides out and the other can slide in fairly easy, there are other honda vehicles like the civic that are much harder to do.

It is helpful. But I cannot really see how you accessed the bolt under the battery plate. Will I need to raise the front end to get under there? Would it be better to remove that tire?
Frustrating Honda designed it this way. Everything else in your video, I understand.

I did it by feeling my way in there..but yes if u raise the drivers side and remove the wheel it makes it easier to access that bolt or u can also rotate steering to the left and get slightly under its also pretty accessible that way.

I've removed the mounting bolts and all associated hardware, but the motor is stuck and will not come out. Pounded with a mallet and sprayed penetrating oil on the mating surfaces. I can see some separation, but it's uneven and don't want to ruin the block by continuing to pound. Can anyone offer solutions?
As long as u got the bolts off, If u got some separation go around it slowly as far around as u can get with some prybar or screwdriver and just lightly pry against it... if its uneven thats probably why it wont come out..u want it to come out as even as possible
@@backyardchevy328 It is uneven from the pounding, was thinking of threading in the top bolt again to realign the starter and hope it comes out now the penetrating oil has had some time to work. Thanks for the original instruction BTW.

Could you please describe the symptoms your Ody starter had?
After sitting for hours(like in the morning) it would crank slow..then suddenly when u turn the key it would make no noise..and after a while it would start again or if i tapped starter it would start

@@backyardchevy328 Interesting, my car will make a low clicking sound as if the batter is dead then after various tries and/or letting it sit for hours it cranks right up
@@CRAPO2011 does it only do that when its been running for a while, then u shut it off and try to restart?
@@CRAPO2011 but yea thats usually what happens when the starter begins to go out, all the worn components begin to stick and thats why tapping starter works...other times when the starter solenoid goes out it'll just quit and not start anymore

I left the battery in place, just unhooked negative terminal. 17mm 3/8" socket on 3 in extension got the top bolt with my snap on 80 tooth flex handle ratchet. 6" extension for the bottom bolt. 12mm 1/4" drive got the big wire off. I was probably there for 20 minutes total.
God help the world....please train ALL utubes how to make videos informative like,,,not bad hollywood like all others,,,,save us please!!!

Follow-up to my previous comment. Today I finished removing the old starter and had a few more observations/tips:
1. I had to use a 1/2" breaker bar to break the 17mm starter bolts free. Not easy to get it positioned as breaker bars are non-ratcheting and there's not a lot of leeway to get leverage inside the compartment with the limited starting positions of the breaker bar.
2. The bracket on my starter had TWO things attached to it, where the bracket in this video appeared to have none. There was a plastic hose clamp holding one of the transmission fluid hoses which was mounted with a plastic clip that was anchored through a hole in the bracket, and there was another one of those plastic mounts with the lift tab that was slid onto a metal tab on the bracket, holding on a cable. I couldn't manage to get either of them off of the bracket in order to pull the starter out, so I removed the bolt holding the bracket onto the starter and just took the bracket off and left it attached to the cable and hose in the compartment.
3. Due to all of the extra hoses/wires that were mounted to the starter bracket, it made it more difficult than in the video to access the bottom bolt for the starter.
4. A tip to be careful of - the starter is mounted very close to hoses for the transmission and coolant systems, so take care when removing/installing it that you don't puncture any of those lines! Then you'll have a whole other job on your hands.
I think there may be several reasons for the differences in my experience versus the one in the video:
1. Previous mechanics may not have reattached all clips/mounts with the vehicle in the video, so there was less for him disconnect. Lots of cables and stuff connected on my vehicle, so a significant amount of extra work and things in the way.
2. Different model year with different evolution of connections/clips (mine is 2004, one in video is ??).
3. Different driving climates/conditions (our van has been driven mostly in colder Northeast climates with more corrosion, the vehicle in the video looks like it has a lot less corrosion, so may be in a warmer/drier climate).
4. Different weather conditions while working (looks pretty warm where the video was recorded, I'm doing the work in 20 degree F winter weather where plastic is less pliable and things don't come apart as easily).
