Thanks Brian. Great video. Had a P0401 for about 2 years. Started happening daily, so I finally got around to fixing it. Pulled the intake manifold and found the port was totally blocked, as well as the one inside the manifold. Reamed it out with some aircraft cable on a drill. Worked like a charm. Replaced the EGR valve as well, as it looked pretty bad. Great video, thanks for your help. Wasn't that tough after all.
Exactly what I was thinking the big Port usually don't fill up, it's the small port in the head that's usually the culprit. I've had to clean mine out twice in the last 5 years. It fills up with carbon.
@@hhosin 100% correct. my lower (exact part hes cleaning here) allowed carb spray to go all the way through on the 1st spray! my UPPER port on the intake manifold itself was the only part that was clogged! a bit of a misleading or only half of the process video.
Thank you for the awesome information. My 2004 Odyssey is dealing with this issue and I replaced the EGR valve but didn’t realize it should clean the lines out.
Video is great; Tips from my experience: the throttle body was stuck to the plenum. Now you'd think, just pry it away with a screw driver, but there are two gaskets there, with a sandwiched layer about 1/2 inch thick. That mid-layer is screwed to the throttle body inside the assembly (and not the plenum of course), and so you may think you need to leave that one in place when you try to pry the throttle body away - wrong!. Both the mid-layer and throttle body have to be pried away, together. Something I did not see on a couple of videos.
So is that cable suppose to come out of either hole...i tried putting a wire in that hole and it only went in about 4 inches so is there something in my hole...
video helped me a lot! egr was plugged solid the whole tube, anyone out here know if a clogged egr could cause engine ticking and knockin? i cleaned out egr after engine light p0401 slight knock still present
sorry you didn't get a reply in 3yrs. sounds like the timing belt tensioner needed replacement. you probably needed the whole timing belt kit replacement: timing belt, tensioner, water pump and pulleys.
Hey great video u just helped me diagnose why my EGR VALVE code came back on. Didn't know about the solution underneath the intake manifold and tk clean it. Sweet!!
If my 01 odyssey's egr valve is bad would 5hat keep it from cranking when i turn the key to start it.has brand new battery but only clicks as if the starter was bad but i never had any type lf trouble starting it before
Should have cleaned the corresponding intake plenum port too; that one gets clogged. there is a TSB for inserting a sleeve in there but still does not prevent it from clogging.
I cleaned that part twice and it worked for tens of thousands of miles but eventually, I had to do eqvt of roto-rooter on mine to get get the code go away. I did not have the correct cable handy. I fabricated EGR blocking plate and fed 3M induction cleaner through the hole in the plate while the engine was running. I was able to remove the clog and fix the P0401 code.
I got the inspiration from BG Products EGR Cleaning kit. I had particle board which I cut to match the gasket and drilled the hole. Here are the pictures. Hopefully you can get the idea. i.imgur.com/RnpYrLI.jpg i.imgur.com/MOkAgcq.jpg i.imgur.com/s9rMWGs.jpg
Hello could you help me with my ody 2001 im having a weird situation every morning my van keep stalling on stop 🛑 or traffic light 🚦 just when the engine is cold only on 2 stops or 3 then when it get warm nothing happen runs pretty good
fredy Calderon you most likely have a bad idle air control motor. Sometimes you can clean it out with carburetor cleaner. Spry the cleaning in the throttle body.there is a small hole that you need to focus to clean On. You can also like the throttlebody down with a rag and cleaner. You may have a little trouble starting it after performing this just hold the throttle wide open and crank the engine at the same time. Once engine starts release throttle and let idle.
How to Automotive thanks but its weird i’ve replace the air control valve clean the tb but the hole you said i haven’t clean it also my idle its so bad like it’s between 700 rpm something like that if i rev thw engine and let off the gas it stall sometimes also is running rich fuel trim way negative when i coming to stop before the rpm drops but now the rpm stays and i hear tue engine like grinding and gotta keep the foot on the gas n brake for preventing to stall
fredy Calderon it is possible the EGR valve is sticking open. That will cause a rich running condition and make Engine stall. You can also pull the EGR valve off and clean the The Pintel on the valve itself.
How to Automotive t be honest i cleaned as well but i kinda notice something like the pin was inside and the other day i clean it as well and the pin was a little bit out and it looks like its stuck also driving on highway hi speed the rpm are on 3,500 if i let go the gas pedal they fall to 1,500 or 1,000 i think the egr valve its going bad
Our 04 is all clogged. Dealer wont even replace the spark plugs. Engine all clogged runs shitty. Stupid design just stupid. No mechanic will touch it. We gutted the 3 catalytics. New spark plugs. Sold it. Bought a 05 caravan 155k miles. No catalytic issues. No timing belt. Runs great. No trans fail Honda = stupid.
Why the Honda hate here? This past month I installed a used motor for my 2000 odyssey( I bought the used motor 9 yrs ago) and cleaned out the egr ports today. Not a difficult cleaning , considering I removed and installed the motor from above with the transmission left in place . ( it CAN be done!) .

Be sure to clean the passage in the upper intake that he took off. My experience is that this is where the worst of the blockage is located.

On a vehicle this old it’s not just the EGR port that needs to be cleaned it’s the intake manifold & gaskets. Do it right & wont have to do it again.
Brilliant. Good video. Honda offers a kit with instructions on how to enlarge the the intake manifold port. It includes a new EGR valve.

Can you recommend another tool to clean that EGR port? I don’t have an old speedo cable.
An old bicycle brake cable is pretty much the same thing. Or an actual plumbing snake. You might have to cut the spiral end off though.
I went to Hardware store and got two feet of cable for .79 cents per foot.
Should have cleaned the corresponding intake plenum port too; that one gets clogged. there is a TSB for inserting a sleeve in there but still does not prevent it from clogging.
Thank you for tip I did not know about the TSB. I did check my car and it was clear. Just forgot to mention it. Hopefully people will see your tip.

Can I substitute brake cleaner for carb cleaner? I have 2 cans of brake cleaner in my garage.
Roland Soe I don’t think it will work. Break clean when I bring the carbon down and clean it up so it be a waste.
How often does the EGR port need to be cleaned?
Every 3 months
I have the same can the mechanic didn't clean my mainfold😤. Great video
Kingzcrown18 that sucks!
How to Automotive I could have replaced the EGR myself, but I didn't know it connects to the manifold.
what is the size of the speedometer cable?
So this only need to be done when I get a code?
Same vanhard Start, and stalls when giving gas. If it cuts off it won't start for another 10mins or worse
