Interesting fact about the French EEZ is that it shows the international diplomatic influence of France. A number of the islands that give it EEZ (Clipperton island somewhat near Mexico and quite a few islands in the Southern Indian Ocean as well as near Madagascar) actually shouldn't : they don't have a permanent population, and normally the Montego Bay convention regulating maritime borders and stuff (which France did sign) says that islands that don't have permanent population give you territorial waters, but not EEZ. International waters has 2 meanings: A: waters that can be claimed by no one. B: waters that are claimed and shared by 2 or more countries but exclude all others. Example: the great lakes, shared by Canada and USA only.
Hey General :) Amazing video and topic! It's true that Portugal has one of the largest EEZs in the world, but I wonder: which country has the biggest EEZ in the Mediterranean? Considering how many countries have access to the Mediterranean, it's really a close call between Italy, Greece, Turkey, Spain and Libya... Also, Kiribati is a very interesting country, consisting of 4 archipelagos that are spread through 3 time zones. Barbs (Geography Now) had made a very good video on them. Chile has such EEZ because of the Easter Island being so far away from mainland S.America, I never knew that France has the biggest EEZ as I always thought either Denmark, the UK or the US has the largest EEZs in the world. Oceania is one of the most fascinating regions on the planet - it's such a cultural mix and they really care about every inch of island they have being in the middle of nowhere with respect to the continental mass, closest one being Australia - so every island and every inch of the ocean they can conquer is a huge deal to them. Unfortunately, The Black Sea and the Azov Sea are also subject to ongoing tensions and disputes, mostly having to do with Russia's interference and annexation of Crimea which makes the entire Azov Sea disputed between Russia and Ukraine, as well as coastal cities like Odessa and Sevastopol are subject to disputes... We (Bulgaria) and Romania don't have an official agreement to the EEZ that we can use in the Black Sea, but we don't have disputes either. It is estimated that in the future we may reach such an agreement that would help and/or prolong maritime trade.
Turkey had a small EEZ because they dont have many islands and don’t have acces to an ocean but a sea. And they have to share it with many other countries. Also Greece has many islands. And even the small ones get huge EEZ. That’s why Greece dominates the waters west of Turkey. My country India has small Islands called ‘Andaman and Nicobar’ it’s the size of Crete, small. But the surrounding waters add a huge part of our EEZ, despite being a small island more than 2500km of the mainland. So yea, Turkey is unlucky.
Just an fyi for the creator, at :15, the pie graph showing the ratio of land to water surface coverage does not match with what they said. Only meant to help:)
The sea around Island of Trindade, at Atlantic, was coloured as brown, but it is Brazilian territory, therefore should be coloured as green. Aldo id lacking the islets of São Pedro and São Paulo, which added another 200 mile radius spot at Atlantic to Brazil
Canada's EEZ almost reaches the Titanic all thanks to Newfoundland as the EEZ stops very closely to where the Titanic sank, now the real question arises whether the Newfoundland Seamounts are part of Canada's EEZ or not because if so the Titanic will be encompassed in the EEZ of Canada.
Small islands they are the biggest beneficiary of this outcome. As humans we only think about land but we never think about the water lol thanks for sharing this with us.
Despite being within the definition of territorial waters, the USA claims that the Northwest Passage, though Canada Arctic Islands is International Waters. Although not acknowledge as Canadian waters, the USA has agreed to ask for permission before passage. There is also a dispute between Canada and Denmark over Hans Island. It sits between Greenland and Baffin Island within the territorial waters of both Canada and Denmark. It is large enough for a flag pole. The flag gets changed by whomever's navy is last to visit. The Canadian flag is removed and the bottle of Canadian whisky taken by the Danes, the Danish flag hoisted and a bottle of schnapps is left at the base of the flag. The Danish flag is removed by the Canadians, the Canadian flag is hoisted the bottle of schnapps is taken and a bottle of Canadian whisky is left.
The recent discovery of two shipwrecks in the Northwest Passage - the HMS Terror and HMS Erebus; two ships that were lost during Sir John Franklin's ill-fated expedition to find the Northwest Passage - strengthens Canada's claim to the North, because the originally-British EEZ of the area was ceded to Canada.

America to the Brits in the 1760s, they kept two small islands off the coast of Newfoundland, St Pierre & Miquelon, which meant they were trying to have a claim to a big part of what used to be one of the best fishing grounds in the world.
That's why St. Pierre and Miquelon's EEZ looks so awkward on the map; largely a straight line extending over 200 km south of the islands.

In 2022, this type of situation should not be happening. Decolonialization should be number one on UN to-do list !

Hey General :)
Amazing video and topic!
Greece has twice the EEZ of Turkey...and most of turkey's eez is in the black sea
I think Italy has the largest
Turkey had a small EEZ because they dont have many islands and don’t have acces to an ocean but a sea. And they have to share it with many other countries. Also Greece has many islands. And even the small ones get huge EEZ. That’s why Greece dominates the waters west of Turkey. My country India has small Islands called ‘Andaman and Nicobar’ it’s the size of Crete, small. But the surrounding waters add a huge part of our EEZ, despite being a small island more than 2500km of the mainland. So yea, Turkey is unlucky.

😂
The recent discovery of two shipwrecks in the Northwest Passage - the HMS Terror and HMS Erebus; two ships that were lost during Sir John Franklin's ill-fated expedition to find the Northwest Passage - strengthens Canada's claim to the North, because the originally-British EEZ of the area was ceded to Canada.
