  • With The Boondocks Reboot set to release in Fall of 2020, a conversation that I've often heard and even engaged with is this question of how The Boondocks should be designed.
    I figured instead of pushing my ideas, I'd explore and share all the influences The Boondocks took in its design and how it went on the shape its visual identity.
    Without fail, all my videos are uploaded at borderline 3AM. Nothing is planned. My sleep schedule is awful. Please watch and enjoy.

    Thank you for this treatment of "The Boondocks." I remember reading the comic strip in the newspaper and wondering how long it would last in syndication. Sure enough, in time they moved it from the "funny pages" and put it - in black and white, I believe - elsewhere. It did feature on Sundays in color.
    Then, it disappeared and I lost track of it - even forgot the name of the creator. Didn't become a regular cable subscriber, so I didn't know until this year that Aaron McGruder's world found a new life on pay-TV. It became even edgier, more vulgar and disturbing. I'm glad to have found it.
    I really wanted to express my admiration of the artwork and how the creative team translated the strip to the small screen. I watch excerpts here on UA-cam and often catch myself marveling at the background images: the trees and vegetation, the buildings, the interiors, the lighting. Of course, I'm taken by the artwork of the characters: anime at the highest level. Just so beautifully done that I'm amazed that such quality has been lovingly devoted to a black creation.
    No, it's not perfect. I mentioned "vulgar" in the sense that it features language and topics that I don't feel are appropriate for children although I know that countless children have watched it. That is our world today. I just hope that now or later, the youngsters appreciate the thought that went into the production and the challenges to serious thought that the program makes.
    The criticism McGruder suffered for taking so long to release episodes reminds me of the criticism George R.R. Martin received for taking so long to write his books which became "Game of Thrones." We all want quick gratification - myself included. But we don't realize how demanding, how draining the spirit of creativity is in those who capture our imaginations and draw us into their worlds. Creators - beginning with God Almighty - have the right to run their creations as they choose. The rest of us mere mortals are along for the ride. Thanks.

    I've never read the comics so I hope they add some of those characters back. Seems like a lot were cut when they changed to the show. Huey, Riley, and Grandad need characters in their own lives to just expand on the universe more. Riley has some people like this but a lot of them are older.

    I personally prefer the art from Season 3. I liked the point about keeping designs simplistic because they are easier to animate and can take away from the character. Huey looks over designed. I liked the t-shirt and brown shirt outfit he was wearing. I think some of the new designs look too anime like. I love anime a lot but this isn't right for it. The Boondocks has always been an interesting blend of cartoons and anime.

      @sirmel11 4 роки тому

      People make a distinction between anime and cartoons and they should. The Boondocks was created by an anime so it's a cartoon, the art may be inspired by anime but it's a cartoon. Anime usually has more storytelling too.

  • @ninjawhale03

    Awesome Video, I love it. another good video demonstrating the difference between animation and artwork, showing how simpler line drawings can benefit animation is "Why You Should Watch Mob Psycho 100" by Super EyePatch Wolf. I would love the boondocks to use really inventive animation to enhance it's themes. It's so much more effective than a lot of people realise, not just because it can be exciting to watch but I really do feel it can emotionally enhance a scene which will benefit the topics that the show wants to cover.

    • @TheStorytellerAJ
      @TheStorytellerAJ  4 роки тому +5

      I think it can also just breathe life into animation. Look at the Dragon Ball Super Broly Movie. The series was stagnant, rigid and stale under Yamamuro's supervision, and as soon as they booted him for Shintani and we got the simple designs, it allowed for much more diversity in the animation, style and character animation.

    • @SpiderandMosquito
      @SpiderandMosquito 4 роки тому +2

      While I definitely agree full heartedly that more inventive and experimental animation that doesn't rely entirely on model would benefit the license, I must take a moment to play devil's advocate and explain why I at least appreciate the show's aesthetic choices. And literally all I need to do is point to literally anything else on adult swim.
      Seriously, when I first saw previews to "Mr. Pickles" I said outloud that "this is why we will never get our equivalent to Ghost in the Shell". Adult animation in the west is ugly it is designed to be ugly and unappealing and gross and creepy and shows like The Boondocks say no to that. They are a punch in the nose to the industry standard. The Boondocks proves that you can be lowbrow and irreverent while still looking pretty... and still having something actually worth saying for God's sake! Obviously you don't have to be consistently on model to be pretty, see shows like Avatar or Steven Universe for that, but this shows commitment to high quality visuals is commendable regardless of what opportunities they may miss

    Personally, I’ve always been open to any art style that the Boondocks chooses to portray; as long as the story and characters are presented well. For all I care, it could have a more western style of design since it wouldn’t really change the characters as they were intended to be portrayed. Also, while the Boondocks is based on Aaron McGruder’s vision and not the fans vision, I’ve always thought that the Boondocks should primarily focus on the kid characters and their interactions with one another based on their individual character traits and their surrounding environment while working in having them grow and develop as characters. Perhaps in the same vein as Class 1-A from My Hero Academia. Heck, I’ve read Boondocks fanfics, in which despite the varied quality of the fics themselves, do a great job in actually utilizing and developing the kid characters, including Cindy, Caesar, and Hiro in addition to Huey, Riley, and Jazmine, instead of letting them go to waste like what McGruder seems to do on a continuous basis. Overall, I believe that the kid characters are the true heart and soul of the Boondocks franchise instead of on parody characters based on rap artists, politicians, and sociopaths.

    • @TheStorytellerAJ
      @TheStorytellerAJ  4 роки тому +7

      I sympathise with the point you're making, in the sense that I do think The Boondocks could and should focus more on its younger characters, as they're the heart and soul of this franchise.
      That said, I think it's equally as important to not neglect the other things that form The Boondocks' identity. And, that naturally IS politics, hip-hop and so-on so-forth. And, neglecting that element would be to neglect an element of The Boondocks' identity. An apolitical Boondocks with no basis in Hip-Hop, to be blunt, isn't The Boondocks.

    • @johnnyd3158
      @johnnyd3158 4 роки тому +2

      TheStoryteller Oh don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to say that the Boondocks needs to abandon its political agenda, as I agree that without it, the Boondocks wouldn’t be what it is, I just think there needs to be a balance of incorporating that agenda with the factors I had mentioned in my previous comment.
      It’s probably one of the reason why I don’t gravitate that much towards the later seasons of the original boondocks series following season 1 since I thought that the first season did a decent job in presenting social satire in relation to black and U.S. culture while still providing deep character moments with Huey, Riley, Grandad, and Jazmine. I’m not saying that that the later seasons are bad, with the exception of season 4, it’s just I felt that they focused way to much on the satire and less on the given characters to the point that all the characters, including Huey, were pretty much flanderized.

    • @sirmel11
      @sirmel11 4 роки тому

      I personally wouldn't be interested if it had more of a western art style. That really depends on what you mean by western. If we're talking more cartoony, that's fine but if you're talking about a comic book sort of style, I might be less interested. I don't think Aaron's style translates to an animated series well and choosing an anime style is more inviting at least for me. I didn't get into the show for the deeper meanings, I got into it because of how anime like one of the episodes was.

    • @johnnyd3158
      @johnnyd3158 4 роки тому

      Sirmel11 From my own experience, I didn’t know what to expect from the Boondocks when I had first watched the original series a couple of years ago. It was then that I was immediately invested in the overall character dynamics, themes, tone, humor, and satire that has been presented in the first season. For me personally, the anime style of design was just a bonus since other cartoon had already utilized the same tactic; such as Teen Titans, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Totally Spies. Given the general design that had been presented in the unaired pilot and both the original pre-syndicated and syndicated comic strips, they seem to be using a design that was minimally inspired by Japanese anime/manga in which they have more of a western design to them in comparison to the more heavily inspired anime design of the original series.

      Wind and fire productions Technically, Jazmine is a level headed character as well. Perhaps not in the same way as Huey and Caesar, but in the original series, she was shown to be more mature than characters like Riley and was probably the only other sane character in the entire original series next to Huey. In fact, I would actually like to see a best friend trio dynamic between Huey, Jazmine, and Caesar, in the reboot series which is something I think was sorely missing in the original comic strip. In a way, Caesar is kinda like a fusion of Huey and Jazmine in which he has Huey’s insight and Jazmine’s optimism. I think that Caesar could act as a mediator between Huey and Jazmine’s viewpoints and with all three of them together, they would probably be the only sane characters in the entire reboot series, lol.

    Anime is a contraction for japanime, which again is a contraction for Japanese animation.
    A cartoon made in Japan, however many younger ppl don't know or understand this concept and started using hyponomy without any understanding of hyponomy.
    If it didn't come from Japan it ain't anime, infact it's very common for many shows themed with cliche anime styles to not even be made here.

    I think if Huey was a real person he'd be really into Warcore and Techwear which is kinda what the concept art is poorly going for. The way that the concept art is messing it up is that they're too colorful. Techwear and Warcore are pretty strictly monochromatic and when they are too colorful they start too look more like Streetwear outfits. His shoes are cool but they're also the wrong direction for Techwear Nike has gone in a more street/fashion direction while Adidas would fit better since they are more cutting edge and performance first designs, Techwear has a strong focus on being waterproof and Adidas is big into Waterproof designs right now. I think Adidas runners and hiking boots and shoes would fit Huey's character better especially if they based it off of sleeker designs. The Nike's he's wearing would fit better on Riley. I feel like Huey and Riley are easy to design clothes for since they are pretty different character wise the only problem is that they are designing them to have a cohesive design which makes it tough because they are trying to keep the colors equal, but what they should be doing is giving Huey monochromatic colors and Riley should be the one with the bombastic colors.

    Anime and cartoon should be different because the stories are told differently. Anime tend to have plot lines that last long while cartoons can change things from episode to episode. I think country of origin is important too. The Boondocks may look like an anime but it's created by an American. Same with Avatar.

    So like one of the first comments you're going to read here is the opposite of what I am about to propose but you know what I think it could work; CGI.
    We're getting a lot of cool artwork here but we have no idea what this could possibly look like in animation and while the aesthetic certainly does look more like Mega Man than Cowboy Bebop, there is still the risk of the final version inevitably looking too similar to the predecessor, especially if they commit to staying on model. Changing to 3D would *certainly* be an easy solution to this. I saw a comment on Berserk 2016, which (with respect to the commentor, I'm calling you out) feels most disingenuous to me; like, why assume the worst and dirtiest scenario. It's not like most CGI shows look like Berserk did.
    CGI has many advantages to it and while I don't want to spread the myth that it's inherently cheaper than 2D because it's not, yes it is a little less expensive for CGI but that's because of the nature of the technique. Good animation will always cost money no matter what you're using.
    Among the benefits to CGI are cinematic immersion with like moving cameras and kinetic energy. Another thing is that once again assuming that this show continues the tradition of looking pretty and staying on model CGI is pretty much a shoo-in for that because and I'm talking about TV CGI it's especially hard to go off model. It's harder to do squash and stretch in computer animation because once again you're using a 3D model with a skeleton and rigging that controls what moves and what doesn't the more joints you give your model the more expensive the animation will be once again proving that CGI is not inherently cheaper than 2D. Also because you're not constantly redrawing the caregivers and instead of operating a puppet it allows opportunities for extra details. It's still best to try to make the designs mostly simplistic for the sake of visual appeal, but that heavy detail clothing Storyteller was concerned over could be more feasible.
    May I bring up Nickelodeon's Ninja Turtles as a comparison?
    That show was very photogenically pleasing, with dynamic camerawork and very few recycled models. Each character was unique and well designed to fit their personality; the turtles themselves all had a slightly different shade of green, and had a slightly different build. Donatello had a distinguishing feature in a space, Michelangelo had freckles, and Raphael had a cracked shell. And that's to say nothing of the rogues gallery of brilliantly designed villains. The show was so visually complex and well designed and not inspite of the 3D. and do I even need to bring up the Star Wars cartoons clone wars and Rebels? That s*** was beautiful! I think they could do the same with Boondocks. And it would be a nice change of pace not just for the franchise but for TV in general. Primetime adult animation almost never is done in 3D and I honestly don't know why; the few examples I can think of is the MTV Spider-Man, tripping the rift, a really bizarre Stoner flick on Adult Swim whose title I don't know, and.... shoot, I know I had another, I'll edit it when it returns to me - that's about it! everything else on adult television is 2D.... very, very, fucking ugly 2D. I hate that this is the standard! Proof in God's existence is the Boondocks saying *NO!* to such foolishness! Regardless of what they do I trust that they will do the best they got!
    *Edit*
    *Father of the Pride!* the old DreamWorks series! That was the one. :)

      I alluded in an older video that I think this reboot is gonna be CGI. The detail in these models kind of just don't allow for very fluid movement. Looking at the success of movies like Into the Spiderverse, it wouldn't surprise me. Plus, it helps differentiate the reboot from the original.
