I thought the opposite about the training montage. I really like it. It showed how the before and after and what the character went through to get there.
Chapter 21...man such a dark read. I had to stop, put the book aside for a couple minutes and breathe. I ended up googling the words " poppy wars chapter 21" after I was done with the chapter and came across the an interview with the author. Not only were tears all up in my eyes while I read the chapter but more came when I learned it was history shared. Evil is real and inside men. Fantastic book. Not sure I would reread chapter 21 though. Images are like stuck in my head. I have a vivid imagination. But if it wasnt for that chapter I would never come across a fact on history.
"Once an empire has become convinced of its worldview, anything that evidences the contrary must be erased." This book was brutal, but I think it did a great job of exploring how we as humans tend to justify our actions and decisions because someone is 'other' from us.
I have very similar feelings about this book! I thought the 2nd half lagged behind the first, but I am always going to be bit biased towards any part of a story that is set in a magic/training school.
i just finished this book! it was very good and some parts very dark. i loved the character development of Rin from her transition of being a peasant and her drive to escape that life to becoming a solider and witnessing the horrors of war. im interested in the 2nd book to see how far she grows in that!!
I Ioved how you explained the book in this review! 👍🏻 (also your hair looks amazing in this video!) I just posted a brief review of The Poppy War on my channel, and I would love to hear your opinion on my video.

Yes! This was definitely one of the more brutal books I've read, but I agree that there is a good message in here.

Haha...right? But the verrryyy end with Altan really dragged on. That's where I was like, "okay we can end this at any time now."

Yes, I'm hoping to read The Dragon Republic soon. I wonder how dark that one will be!
This was one of my favorite reads this year.
This was definitely something else! Unlike anything I've read this year so far!
I agree. I am looking forward to the next book.
