Those of you who are saying she doesn't have any emotion... it's supposed to be that way. She is supposed to look numb. The guy is supposed to look mean, forceful. It was a beautiful dance.
For everyone who is commenting saying they have no passion, look more closely to the WAY they move and their facial expressions!!! It's portraying an abusive relationship! If you are so blind as not to see the amazing work they're doing then you don't know the art of dance really well.
Wow that song was freaking gorgeous. An some dancers are slim that way. I danced with a lot of females that ate a lot but were super slim like that. 16 years of ballet, lyrical, modern, contemporary, and hip hop.
I have loved this dance since the first time I saw it back in 2010 and I always come back and watch it because it is so hauntingly beautiful. But it always disheartens me to read comments on this video about how they're "destined" for each other and how this is so "romantic". This is an abusive relationship and there is nothing romantic about it. It's not the abused party's fault they they are in love with someone who hurts them, but no one is "meant to be" with somebody who abuses them, it is a tragedy that many times, they cannot get away, and that many times, don't realize that they can or should. And the fact that she "ends up with him" at the end of the dance is heartbreaking, not romantic.
This is a beyond beautiful and accurate depiction of a relationship where he is manipulative, hurtful, and sucks every ounce of energy our of her.. but she allows this to happen because no matter the pain she endures for him she cannot help but fall back into the comfortable and usual rhythms with him. She cannot help but love him, and you can tell that she might not want to.. but she is helpless. She is helplessly in love, and he takes full advantage. Beautiful dance.
I have had a high metabolism for the longest time and know what your going through. But let me tell you that this was so beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous! It made me cry.
First time through I thought wow contemporary dance usually portrays more passion or emotion, I thought she looked disconnected and numb, that her facial expressions lacked feeling and that she was just performing the movements and moving through a memorized routine with no heart and I realized by the end and watching it again that's what it's portraying that being bounded to a relationship that isn't healthy can emotionally harden your heart cause you to feel unlike yourself and you can feel shackled to repetitive movements in a continuous cycle and that what you think is love might not be and you can't help but keep falling into the comfortable routine or security of someone you thought you loved that leaving would hurt more than staying. And so at first glance you think this routine isnt capturing anything when really it is done beautifully and very in tune with the message and story, such captivating movements that's beautifully tragic :) great legs and feet arches.
I love how you expect that phrase to mean "you're so special that I can't help but falling in love with you", but they changed it so it will mean a guy is almost forcing her to fall in love with him and there's nothing she can do... At least that's what I understood. Also great technique, they're both very talented
Dang... this dance just ruined this song for me. I never thought of it as an anything but a happy, loving song. AMAZING work by the dancers and the choreographer(s)
This was choreographed beautifully. The entire dance I was enamored with their relationship and how he was pulling her or lifting her. The amazing part to me is that they did such lifts with her looking so limp in his arms. Most if the time in lifts you have to have all your muscles tightened for the lifter(s) to hold you for very long. Don't even get me started on her acting skills, most people underestimate the active skills needed for a convincing dance and she went over and above what my expectations would have been. His transition for the beginning to the end was nothing to ignore either. He started out very simple with everything he was doing. He seemed almost innocent, but as the dance went on he started to show calm anger which, I don't know about you, is scarier than expressive anger. All in all this is one of the best performances up have seen in a long while.
People are being so critical about the technique. Dancing isn't all about technique!! It's about PASSION. They are obviously passionate about what they are doing!! This dance is beautiful is so many ways... It's strong and painful and vulnerable and beautiful and understandable. They aren't even adults and the feeling they put into it is amazing. It truly took my breath away.
For the non-dancers out there, this is contempary dance, which is usually based around a story or a theme, this theme is obviously about an abusive realtionship, very well done, amazing dancers and they chose the right song
If you've ever been in an abusive/toxic relationship, this strikes home. It shows all the emotion and the song choice was perfect, deeply haunting. Its been years but I keep coming back to this video. This is brilliantly performed, the choreography, I think could be better constructed and more fluid but I think it's allowed to be a little sloppy cuz that's what those relationships are, a hot effing mess and anyone who's been there knows exactly what I'm talking about.
Stunning take on the meaning of this song. I take it to be an abusive or toxic relationship, and it's clear that he's abusing her but when he tries to leave, she's so afraid to be without him, that she begs him to stay. Brings me to tears. Absolutely stellar.
You get the unexpected morphed meaning. He drags her down, and lifts her up. It's clearly a toxic (abusive) relationship, she doesn't want to love him? Or maybe she is trying to love him. Or even used to love him. She goes through the motions a few times with him. The way I interpret it. She loves him, but she hates it. He tries to hold her, she stays for a minute. She's just numb.
This was absolutely moving and beautiful. Now, will both of those people go to Burger King? I recommend a bacon double cheeseburger with xtra large fries and a large chocolate shake.
At first when I read your comment I was like "How can anyone not realize what this dance is expressing?" But then I read more of the comments, and you're right. It surprised me
I commented on this a long time ago, making fun of the way both of these people looked, and I just wanted to say that I was wrong to do that. This had me in tears, both then and now, and I can't believe I was able to focus on anything other than the passion and quality that I just rewatched. This is unbelievably amazing, and to the two people in this video, you executed this perfectly, and I'm sorry for what I said. P.S. I left the comment there, because I think that hiding your mistakes is stupid and childish, and also not the point of this comment, which is why this is a "p.s."
i don't think that anyone is really grasping the fact that this routine is expressing an abusive relationship. pay very close attention to the way he handles her, how drained she looks, how even when she breaks away from him, she falls right back into the motions of being with him. he grasps her hard and forcefully because this is an abusive relationship expose of sorts. it's a beautiful take on an ugly relationship.
hahaha me too!! I was thinking "wow her legs are so skinny,I think she's the first dancer I see with skinny legs" but they do it great! really beautiful!
very very very different approach to the boy/girl contemporary duets. and i never thought of the song this way. definitely talented but i agree the boy could have more emotion and connection
The first time I saw this a few years ago, I didn't quite understand this dance. Now every time I watch it I love it more and find new reasons to appreciate. Absolutely beautiful and powerful beyond words.
This is beautiful and I really like it, especially the dark take on what seems to be such a pretty song, but I coun't get over haw thin that girl is! I'm in a professional dance company and not even our prima ballerinas look like that. She looks like she barely has any muscle on her! Obviously she is a gorgeous dancer, but I have to wonder, how much is strength and how much is flexibility?
It's a depiction of an abusive relationship. His domination, her resistance but ultimate resignation to her situation. You can see her helplessness, her feeling that she needs him but also the knowledge that it's not healthy but her inability to leave, it's a very powerful piece especially for anyone who's ever been through that.
I love the dance and movement all very beautiful but I think with the emotion you guys portrayed a different song choice would be better... But still it was a very beautiful light dance
@dancr4life394 I'm talking about the girls who starve themselves for their art. I've been in the dance community for over 40 years... both as a dancer and as a program coordinator. I've personally known dancers who've made themselves very ill due to the pressures of this industry. Our dance organization does not allow or promote starvation... and our dancers are amazing.
... maybe isn't an abusive relationship ... maybe the life abused them .. before they met ...looks to me .. like he try to make her .. stand up over and over again ... mostly ... we see what we experienced
With the way that he yanks her into the next dance moves it looks more to be like he is forcing her into things and she is just going along with it. Within the first minutes he kind of caresses her head like he's praising her and making her feel good and then he yanks on her hair, it was a good theory, but I think it's more of an abusive relationship.
Yes, and that was mine. I didn't say anything that would imply otherwise, so I don't understand what your comment entails... Besides, you just gave your own opinion.
alyxskyler LOL I know you commented six years ago but nobody replied and I’m doing nothing so I’ll tell you. ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ by Ingrid Michaelson
The message was performed beautifully! I love this dance, though the choreography could use some improvement. Emotion is all there, but some steps could have been changed to make the movements as chilling as the emotion. Overall, this is a great piece.
I'm a dancer too, and this is just beautiful. I loved the relationship you two showed and the emotion throughout the whole dance. Just wonderful work. (:
Amazing... This dance has almost brought me to tears. The emotions in this piece are phenomenal. Incredible how such an ugly concept can bring such a beautiful dance, great job
Agreed. The feel of this dance almost makes you feel uncomfortable to watch it; like you're watching someone being abused without being able to do anything about it. I love that the choreographer used this extremely powerful version of the song. Absolutely beautiful.
COMPLETELY different then what I thought it was gonna be. totally amazing and wonderful and sad and such a cool twist and beautiful dancers and actors.
I watch this video ever time i come on here i just get goosebumps every time every time I'm in love with this and i don't know why lol even though they are so thin and skinny i really think it sits well with them both because of the movements they do in this piece. BRAVO
This wasn't my favourite dance but when you're saying there's no emotion or passion, that's a lie because it's all there. I just think the choreography could've been improved. Also I think they should've used a different song because it doesn't look like a romantic relationship but an abusive one. i really dont mean to be rude or mean or anything and no, i cant do half of her routine but....she isnt very graceful with her movements....but other than that, this so very beautiful. :)

Omg, i totally see it. I am so glad I am not the only one who sees it.
Agreed! They did so well I hate him cause he's so convincing and she oh boy her faces I choke up every time!
I can totally see that look at the way he grabs her
Exactly. They were just great.
Such a powerful dance with such a strong meaning
This is probably the most heartbreaking-ly beautiful dance I have ever seen.
So.. beautiful. Almost made me cry. And I never cry.
Wow that song was freaking gorgeous. An some dancers are slim that way. I danced with a lot of females that ate a lot but were super slim like that. 16 years of ballet, lyrical, modern, contemporary, and hip hop.
THIS WAS AMAZING LITTERALY THE BEST DANCE I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!!
this is beautiful....crying like a baby right now
Absolutely beautiful. If only all dancers could tell the story as well as you
I have loved this dance since the first time I saw it back in 2010 and I always come back and watch it because it is so hauntingly beautiful. Good God, this is beautiful. No wonder you won first place. Props to you and props to your choreographer.

Heather Smith the dance is meant to show that he is forcing her to love him and she cant do nothing about it thags why she loom so numb
the choreographer did an amazing job
this dance was amazing. made my cry. the end.
so beautiful..and come one now im not a dancer but i got the story line. they're both amazing dancers.
OH MY GOD THIS IS SO WONDERFUL
I love this song and the dance was beautiful
Wow, this gives me chills. Amazingly, portrays how an abusive relationship works.
I love how you expect that phrase to mean "you're so special that I can't help but falling in love with you", but they changed it so it will mean a guy is almost forcing her to fall in love with him and there's nothing she can do... At least that's what I understood. Also great technique, they're both very talented
I got that this dance represents an abusive relationship
Glamorous G exactly what I was thinking
Giannie Ruth exactly
nah. its more like the girl KNOWS the relationship is bad, but she "cant help ailing in love" with him..
Sisi Sb or its like hes forcing her to love him and then she actually ends up truly falling in love with him.
that was quite beautiful ..
wow that WAS mazing!
I got chills!
absolutely stunning!
I love this so much
Dang... this dance just ruined this song for me. I never thought of it as an anything but a happy, loving song. AMAZING work by the dancers and the choreographer(s)

I could see this choreography being on SYTYCD. Very pretty.
Puppetry dance in a way right? About the girl who seems to get hurt alot and controlled, but still loves him. Sad but beautiful dance. Love it.
Stunning take on the meaning of this song. I take it to be an abusive or toxic relationship, and it's clear that he's abusing her but when he tries to leave, she's so afraid to be without him, that she begs him to stay. Brings me to tears. Absolutely stellar.

Aww this is sad ): yet so good! lol
So romantic
didnt love it but liked it...liked him more than her. favorite part was the ending. keep it up
All I can focus on is how skinny her legs are😂😂
I thought I was the only one.... Lol xD
Yaaaas, me too!!!
hahaha me too!! I was thinking "wow her legs are so skinny,I think she's the first dancer I see with skinny legs"
but they do it great! really beautiful!
Haha I thought the same and was thinking she was gonna snap a bone or something😂
You must be a fatty
The emotions, the dance...I Balled like a baby!!
It was Absolutely Flawless!
very very very different approach to the boy/girl contemporary duets. and i never thought of the song this way. definitely talented but i agree the boy could have more emotion and connection
I think it's more emotional then 'a husband who hits' I looked at it like love hurts but she sticks around cause it's worth it
What song is this? and whos it by? i love itttttt

Such a dark interpretation of the song; it's brilliant. I loved every moment of it and I'm just stunned at the story told through this dance.

she's tired of him. She wants out. but she's his rag doll. She can't leave, he's always there
this is probably my favorite dance. it leaves me speachless every time i watch it. strong message, strong dancers, perfect song.

don't know what people are talking about I definitely feel the emotion
I'm a dancer too, and this is just beautiful. I loved the relationship you two showed and the emotion throughout the whole dance. Just wonderful work. (:
what kind of dance is this?
anyone know WHO this cover is by???
My cousin dances at this studio:) you should see their more recent dances they are amazing!
she has amazing legs
this is by far the most amazing dance i have ever seen, you can not only see the emotions but also you can feel it.
The second I saw it, I knew it was about abusive relationships. The way he grabbed her... his hands in her hair.
Lauren McFarland I had to stop about four times midway . At one point I felt sick about it. Every time he grabbed her I flinched
I never thought to take the song as if it was an abusive relationship.... but its very interesting...
a real woman is beautiful either way skinny, curvy, or "thick" its not disgusting at all.
I feel like this was about her being in love with a guy who abuses her.
Anyone know what version of this song this is?
Taylor Nevinski It's Ingrid Michaelson's version recorded live at Daytrotter
COMPLETELY different then what I thought it was gonna be. totally amazing and wonderful and sad and such a cool twist and beautiful dancers and actors.
who is singing?
Ingrid Michaelson :)
Thanks
legs for days!
I watch this video ever time i come on here i just get goosebumps every time every time I'm in love with this and i don't know why lol even though they are so thin and skinny i really think it sits well with them both because of the movements they do in this piece. BRAVO
@AGM1026 being fragile is part of the point
This wasn't my favourite dance but when you're saying there's no emotion or passion, that's a lie because it's all there. I just think the choreography could've been improved. Also I think they should've used a different song because it doesn't look like a romantic relationship but an abusive one. Renisha Rodriques its supposed to be an abusive relationship.
It wasn't ever supposed to be an actual romantic relationship, it was supposed to be a new take on it where there are many different theories in place such as she is being forced to love him, or she had loved him for so long that she just goes through the motions with him, or even that he is an abusive partner, but she loves him any and she knows it's wrong.
THAT WAS THE BEST DUET EVER IM NOT EVEN JOKING OMG
its like he is making her love him which is so not cool. but it was great
i really dont mean to be rude or mean or anything and no, i cant do half of her routine but....she isnt very graceful with her movements....but other than that, this so very beautiful. :)
i liked it but it was kinda creepy like it looked to me like the dancers were trying to portrait an abusive raltionship but idk prbs not just my interpretation
ive competed against her shes 17 or 18 now. shes just naturally thin and a dancer
I kinda wish that the guy did more in the beginning... he kinda just walked around, lifted, and did 2 turns
i think this choreogrphy can be missunderstood because the song talk about being in love, but the dance is about a toxic relationship, they are normalisating the violence between the couple (dont think i dont like how they dance, i mean, they are alsome, but the way the coreography is made isn´t the best) (sorry if there´s some mistake in what i said, i´m argentinian so english is not my mother lenguage)
whoever choreograph that should be fired.... I just watch a dance about an abusive relationship to my favorite song... how horrible.... not what I was expecting to watch
